MTZ thermostat - device, replacement and malfunctions

The thermostat for MTZ regulates the temperature of the cooling fluid by disconnecting and connecting the tractor radiator. After the installation is started, warm-up speeds up.

Most vehicle models are equipped with solid-fill thermostats. The unit works as follows:

  • A small cylinder is filled with wax.
  • At eighty-two degrees the substance melts. The pin is connected to the valves only when pressed into the wax.
  • The pin is squeezed out of the cylinder, since when melting the substance begins to expand.
  • The valve in the thermostat for MTZ opens. Thanks to this, coolant passes through the body of the part.
  • The reliable valve closes completely only when the engine is switched off.

A little history

The MTZ series of universal tractors began to be created in the 1970s after a special resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers. The government decided to introduce a powerful row-crop tractor (up to 80 hp) into the agricultural industry. The development was based on a modernized version of the MTZ-50 tractor. Many changes were made to the design of the vehicle; the casing and cabin were modernized.

The MTZ tractor series began to be created in the 1970s

A new engine with increased power was installed on the tractor. In 1972, the first tests of the MTZ-82 were very successful. Based on the test results, a list of aggregated equipment was created; in total, over 230 devices were developed for different types of work. Increasing the tractor speed to 30 km per hour made it possible to use it for transport work.

The first tractor rolled off the assembly line of the Minsk plant in 1974. The first reviews of MTZ 82 were positive. And Belarusian tractor manufacturers began to increase their production volumes. For almost four decades, the equipment of the Minsk plant has cultivated fields on almost all continents of the world. They are especially popular in developing countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Guys. Tell me which thermostat is better to install on MTZ82.1?

Why does the MTZ82.1 start poorly on a warm engine, but turn over and start well on a cold one? What could be the reason?

Hello guys, please tell me, MTZ82.1 does not start well on a warm engine, but turns over and starts well on a cold engine. What could be the reason?

Basic device malfunctions

The main signs that the unit has failed are the following:

  • Diesel takes a long time to heat up to the optimal temperature, and its overheating occurs very quickly;
  • The temperature indicators of the power plant fall while driving, and rise when stopping;
  • When the engine warms up, the lower pipe remains warm for several minutes;
  • The engine is very hot, and the lower pipe is consistently cold, even when the diesel engine is warm.

When to change the thermostat?

It is necessary to replace the thermostat on MTZ 82 if:

  • The motor takes a long time to heat up;
  • Diesel overheating accelerated;
  • When stopping, the temperature of the installation rises; when moving, on the contrary, it drops sharply;
  • Even when the diesel engine is warm, the engine is hot, the lower pipe is cold.

The MTZ thermostat cannot be repaired. If a spare part breaks down, we recommend replacing the unit.

In our catalog you will find everything you need for your tractor engine.

If you installed the thermostat correctly on the MTZ 82, the part will last a long time. However, most experts advise periodically checking the part as follows:

  • The MTZ thermostat is closed.
  • Start the engine, after a couple of minutes check the pipe that is connected to the radiator.
  • The pipe must be cold. When the pipe is warm, there is a loose closure in the system.
  • Therefore, it takes more time to warm up the engine. Fuel consumption also increases;
  • When heated to 90 degrees, the thermostat should become hot. If the temperature of the part does not increase, it means that the MTZ thermostat is jammed.

How to check the thermostat

To test the device in the field, just do the following:

  • We start the engine, making sure that the thermostat is closed and after a couple of minutes we check the pipe going to the radiator - it should be cold. If it is warm, it means that there is a leaky closure, which increases the engine warm-up time and increases fuel consumption;
  • As soon as the coolant warms up to 85-90 degrees, the pipe should become hot. If this does not happen, then the thermostat is jammed.

I installed it on MTZ 82, a new type thermostat, an engine with a starter. Why doesn’t the engine heat up at all, it stays at 60 degrees in the summer and 80 in the winter?

Good day ! I installed it on MTZ 82, a new type thermostat, the engine with a starter, the engine does not heat up at all, in the summer when it’s hot it stays at 60, in the winter under load the spruce reaches 80 degrees, I checked the thermostats in boiling water, it works! I heard somewhere that the body of the new thermostat is not suitable for working with the starter, but I connected it to the starter anyway and connected the cooling system, maybe circulation comes from there? I'll try to turn off the tube to the launcher now, has anyone encountered such a problem?

Engine water pump D 240

The water pump of the MTZ 82 tractor, a centrifugal type, is designed to create intensive circulation of liquid in the cooling system and, with this, more efficiently remove heat from heated engine components. The water pump impeller is mounted on a shaft and secured against rotation using a flat. The impeller is secured to the shaft with an end bolt. Two ball bearings allow the roller to rotate together with the impeller. The volume in the housing between the bearings is filled with lubricant using a grease gun. The oil and water cavities of the pump are separated from each other by an additional mechanical seal located in the impeller. The seal is a textolite washer that contacts the well-machined end of the thrust bushing, pressed into the pump body, as well as a rubber cuff surrounding the roller and pressing the springs.

The impeller is located in the profiled cavity of the water pump housing. During rotation of the impeller, a vacuum is formed at the entrance to this cavity, which is transmitted to the receiving chamber, connected by a pipe to the lower radiator tank. Using a vacuum, the liquid is supplied to the impeller blades and, under pressure, is fed into a spiral channel, called a volute, surrounding the impeller in the pump housing. Next, the liquid is pumped into the longitudinal channel of the engine cooling system.

The diesel water pump D 240 and the fan rotate from the engine crankshaft pulley using a V-belt, which also rotates the generator rotor. At rated engine speed (2200 rpm), the fan and pump develop 2600 rpm.

Important elements of the system

KamAZ vehicles have a cooling system reminiscent of classic versions. Moreover, each unit is important, because it is responsible for the functionality of the system and the correct movement of coolant.

Note! It should be noted that there are two thermostats. They are required for the full operation of the installed engines. Also, special blinds are installed on the radiator, and in the cold season they are closed to speed up the heating of the power unit.

Flushing and refilling the cooling system

To refill the cooling complex, it is recommended to use antifreeze - it does not contain any active or harmful substances that can harm the system or damage it. In rare, rather extreme, cases, you can also add water - melt, rain or regular well water, but with the addition of soda ash (about 1-1.2 g per 1 liter of water).

As for the filling volumes, for the upper glove compartment the liquid level should not reach the level of the filler neck by about 5-6 cm. If more fluid is poured, the excess will flow out through the control drain outlet located on the radiator. Not adding enough fluid will negatively affect its circulation and cause rapid overheating of the engine.

To extend the life of the cooling system, it should be flushed approximately every 2000 hours of operation. For this, a special mixture is used, prepared from a soda solution and kerosene (about 2 liters). With such flushing, the engine must run for at least 12 hours in a row, and at the end of it, the radiator is additionally washed with clean water.

It is also possible that cleaning is carried out with compressed air under high pressure - this method is also quite effective, although it requires special equipment.

Varieties

Manufacturers equip cars with different types of temperature controllers.

This is due to engine power, the internal pressure of the cooling system, and the volume of liquid. The main types include:

  1. A simple one-valve option. Is the most common. One valve regulates the temperature of the antifreeze until the power unit is completely warmed up, subsequently opening full circulation within the system.

  2. Two-stage. The operating principle is similar to a single-valve thermostat. The only difference is that the valve consists of 2 plates: small and large. Temperature adjustment occurs as the small diameter plate is opened. After reaching a certain degree, a large diameter plate opens. Such thermostats are often installed on cars with high pressure inside the cooling system.
  3. Two-valve. Thermal elements of this type were installed on Soviet cars. The principle of their operation is based on the operation of the main and bypass valves installed on the same stem. As it heats up, a small valve opens. At the same time, the large valve remains closed. After the antifreeze was completely heated, the bypass valve closed, opening the main and full circulation within the system.
  4. Electronic. New, modern type of thermostats. The system with the valve inside remained the same, a heating element was added to it and adjustment was made using the on-board computer.

The design of the thermostat has not changed for many years, proving its efficiency for cooling engines of any power.

Operating principle

The operating principle of this device is based on a small cylinder mounted on the side facing the engine. Inside it is completely filled with artificial wax, which begins to melt when it reaches 82 degrees Celsius. Wax was chosen as a working material due to its unique property of expanding with increasing temperature and transitioning to a liquid state from a solid.

The control pin is pressed into the wax on one side and connected to the valve on the other. As the wax melts, it expands, forcing the pin out of the cylinder and opening the valve, allowing coolant to pass through the thermostat.
