    Appearance at the turn of the 1940s–1950s. nuclear weapons and aircraft for their delivery, as well as the rapid improvement of missile technology that occurred in the next decade, produced a genuine revolution in military affairs. And few people know what role the GAZ-66 truck, popularly nicknamed “shishiga,” played in these changes.

    By the early 1960s, views on the use of the Ground Forces, Air Force and other branches and branches of the Armed Forces had changed significantly. During this period, the basic principles of the combat use of airborne troops (Airborne Forces) were also revised. The main content of airborne operations was now considered to be the consolidation and development of the results of nuclear strikes delivered in the operational depths of the enemy’s defense. In connection with the new doctrine, the requirements for the mobility of airborne formations sharply increased. In order to meet these requirements and provide the army with the ability to conduct modern maneuverable combat operations, a powerful rearmament of almost all branches of the military was necessary. Among other things, the Airborne Forces required a light, universal, cross-country cargo vehicle, adapted for parachute landing and capable of serving as a base for various weapons and equipment, both already in service and future ones. Since 1964, the GAZ-66 multi-purpose army vehicle with a load capacity of 2 tons and excellent cross-country ability has been in production. According to its basic tactical and technical data, the vehicle, in principle, suited the Airborne Forces, but in order to fully meet the requirements, the vehicle needed to be improved. The modification project was carried out by specialists from Experimental Plant No. 38 of the USSR Ministry of Defense in Bronnitsy.

    As the basis for creating an amphibious assault vehicle, designated GAZ-66B, the GAZ-66-05 modification, equipped with variable pressure tires, a self-extracting winch and shielded electrical equipment, was chosen.

    The presence of shielded electrical equipment that does not interfere with the operation of radio-electronic devices made it possible to use the vehicle as a base for various radio communications. The project included converting the all-metal cabin into a folding one with a canvas top, installing a removable windshield frame, split doors with removable sides and a split steering column.

    The use of a folding cabin was dictated by the fact that in the early 1960s the main aircraft of military transport aviation (MTA) was the An-12B, which was put into service in 1959 even before the appearance of the GAZ-66. This aircraft had a cargo compartment with a height of 2.4 m (under the center section) to 2.6 m. The An-8 aircraft, which entered service in 1958, but was less widespread in transport aviation, had similar cargo compartment dimensions. The overall height of the standard GAZ-66 with an all-metal cabin was 2.49 m, and the car, being installed on a parachute platform, no longer fit on the plane. Therefore, for the landing it was necessary to develop a vehicle with a soft top cabin. Since such a machine can be operated with both an open and closed cabin, rear-view mirrors were mounted in addition to the standard ones on the doors of the car or on the cabin near the doors.

    During 1965, prototypes of the GAZ-66B passed the entire necessary range of special and military tests, including piledrivers on a ground stand and parachute landing. The test results were satisfactory and on March 2, 1966, by order of the USSR Minister of Defense No. 38, the GAZ-66B landing vehicle was adopted by the Soviet Army. Serial production of these vehicles using finished GAZ-66-05 vehicles (and in some cases GAZ-66-04) was organized at one of the automobile repair enterprises of the USSR Ministry of Defense.

    The operational documentation for the landing vehicle was published as an appendix to the “Operating Manual for the GAZ-66 Truck”, which itself, naturally, did not contain any mention of the GAZ-66B, since GAZ was neither involved in the development nor in the production of the landing vehicle had no relation.

    GAZ 66 with a drilling rig is in the service of surveyors when taking and studying soil samples from depth. It is designed for vibration drilling of vertical wells of relatively small depth (up to 40 meters) on soils of I – IV severity categories. However, when using the percussion-rope drilling method, heavier rocks (frozen and rocky) are also subject to it.

    3. Dismantling equipment DPO-01 removes supports and piles from wells. The traction effect is provided by a hydraulic cylinder operating from the standard hydraulic system of the unit.
    4. The Gesan GS 210 DCH petrol generator ensures manual arc welding. It can be used as a backup source of power supply.

    Application of drilling and crane machines

    Recently, drilling and crane machines with crane-manipulator installations have become in great demand; the versatility of such machines makes it possible to perform a complex of works on laying power lines using one piece of equipment. Using its own crane, the machine loads and delivers the future network supports to the work site, drills a hole in the required location, lifts and installs a pole in the hole, and then lifts workers in a cradle to pull wires and perform installation work.
