CAT C9 ACERT industrial engine manufactured by Caterpillar (USA) - 6-cylinder, in-line, 4-stroke, direct fuel injection, turbocharged with free air charge cooling system, electronic control unit (ADEM™ A4), HEUI™ fuel system, high efficiency of oil filters, lighter cylinder block design, split connecting rods.


Caterpillar C9 engine power - 278-381 hp. at a crankshaft speed of 1800-2200 rpm. The engine meets Tier 3 (US EPA) and Stage IIIA (European Union) emissions standards thanks to the use of ACERT (Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology). It covers 4 systems to reduce exhaust emissions and affects:

  • fuel system;
  • fuel combustion process;
  • system for supplying clean air to the engine;
  • implementation of an electronic control and management system.

IND mode - A (continuous operation) - a mode of continuous operation of the engine in difficult conditions, when the engine is operated at maximum power and maximum speed up to 100% of the operating time, without breaks or periodic load reduction.

IND mode - B - engine operating mode in which power and (or) rotation speed are periodically reduced compared to the maximum value (operation duration at full load does not exceed 80% of the total operating time)

IND mode - C (intermittent mode) - engine operation with a periodic increase in power and (or) rotation speed to maximum values ​​(operation duration at full load does not exceed 50% of the total operating time)

IND mode - D - engine operating mode in which periodic power increases to the maximum value are allowed (operation time at full load does not exceed 10% of the total operating time)

IND - E mode is a mode in which maximum power is required for a short period of time for starting or during sudden overload. For emergency operation, in which the normal power level is not enough (the operating time at full load does not exceed 5% of the total operating time).

Engine operation: The power of this engine is achieved due to volume, and not by strong boost, which as a result significantly reduces the load on engine parts and has a positive effect on fuel consumption. The modernized fuel system increased fuel economy by 4% compared to the previous modification. The use of a variable speed supercharger allows for maximum torque from 1800 rpm. The compression brake allows you to extend the life of the pads due to the engine braking force of 381 hp. High quality manufacturing improves engine reliability.

Scope of application

The Caterpillar D9R bulldozer found its main area of ​​application in the mining industry and in the field of mineral extraction. This special vehicle is also ideal for performing large volumes of excavation work in quarries, during the construction of roads and large-scale objects, for clearing and leveling the territories of large-scale construction sites; for demolition of old buildings and structures, clearing forests and extinguishing forest fires.

When working with soils of various categories, preliminary loosening is required only for the fourth category of soil. In the beginning, this heavy bulldozer was not intended for wetlands or soils with high moisture levels. However, with the development and use of special wide tracks, this became possible.

The CAT D9R bulldozer has found specific application in the Israeli army. Since the 60s of the twentieth century, its armored version (initially it was the D9, later the D9R) was widely used to make passages in barriers and destroy fortified enemy positions; clearing the occupied territory from ruins and debris and demining it.

During times of active hostilities with militant Islamist groups, armored bulldozers evacuated damaged vehicles, armored personnel carriers and tanks from the front lines under direct enemy fire; improvised explosive devices and land mines were cleared.

Heavy armor made the military version of the CAT D9R invulnerable to explosive devices with a capacity of up to five hundred kilograms of TNT. And to protect the bulldozer from anti-tank grenade launchers, the Sulamot anti-cumulative screen was developed.

Heavy special vehicles were repeatedly used for direct passage through houses occupied by terrorists, with the complete destruction of these buildings, the elimination of enemies and zero losses among their personnel. Hamaz and Hezbollah militants have learned from personal experience that no portable weapon, including an RPG, can stop this bulldozer. The armored version of the D9/D9R weighs from 65 to 71.5 tons (the weight of a conventional CAT D9R bulldozer is 49 tons).

The Caterpillar D9R is a special-purpose vehicle of impressive size, and the model developers took advantage of the opportunity to install a spacious and fairly comfortable cabin. The standard assembly includes safety systems, including FOPS and ROPS, high-quality damping vibration and noise insulation. The dashboard has soft covering. The front panel has a 24/12 Volt connector and voltage converter, fastenings and special places for containers and cups; antenna and speakers. There is a standard first aid kit in the cabin.

The controls for turning on/off the windshield wiper and door lock are located on the steering wheel. The operator's seat is quite comfortable, especially for such special equipment, which has a set of adjustments. Simplicity of control is characterized by the possibility of carrying out working manipulations with one hand. To make a turn, you can use manual controls (levers and steering wheel), or a braking system for the left and right tracks.

The hood of the CAT D9R is tapered, the fuel tank has a recess, and the ripper frame is narrow. All this provides the operator with an unobstructed view of both the front and rear working areas. The rear window is low, allowing the operator to monitor the work of the ripper tooth or teeth. Large glazed doors allow you to clearly see all areas adjacent to the special vehicle without bending over.

An automated control system continuously monitors the condition of equipment, ensuring timely detection of problems and their elimination in a short time. In particular, this system processes signals from temperature sensors, pressure indicators; data on the state of the electrical network and the degree of filter contamination, fuel level and temperature of the engine coolant, hydraulic oil and power transmission oil; engine oil pressure, coolant flow.

The design of the special vehicle and its power elements

The CAT D9R bulldozer is based on a reliable load-bearing frame that does not transfer dynamic or other loads to the operator’s cabin. To enhance strength, cast steel elements are provided, as well as spars made by rolling.

The main crankcase, balance bar seat and front cross member are reinforced cast steel parts that are built into the most stressed areas of the main frame. This design distributes loads well and provides increased strength. The use of box section ensures rigid alignment of components. Top and bottom beams are continuously rolled to ensure exceptional strength of the main frame.

The final drives are installed at a considerable height, thanks to the special design of the main crankcase. This arrangement reduces their contamination, corrosion and all kinds of mechanical damage, protects them from impact loads, abrasive wear and dirt. To manufacture the frame, a closed profile of rectangular cross-section was used.

The D9R main frame is designed to withstand the severe shock loads and torsional forces that inevitably occur when using a dozer blade and soil ripper in harsh operating conditions.

A swing axis and a hinge-type balance bar are provided to optimize the position of the supporting structure in space, as well as to ensure smooth movement. For correct operation of mechanisms, their timely lubrication is necessary. It is produced through a single lubrication point, the connector of which is located to the left of the engine compartment. This service removes the lubrication of pins, end joints, bearings and balancers.

The stability of the equipment is ensured by the impressive weight of the Caterpillar D9R bulldozer. The blade stabilizer also plays an important role here, increasing maneuverability and digging effort, as well as ensuring the balance of the bulldozer on any ground. Thanks to the stabilizer, the need to install diagonal struts is eliminated. This is due to the transfer of lateral forces directly to the supporting structure, but not to moving parts and mechanisms.

A special “Tag-Link” blade stabilizer mount moves the dozer blade closer to the tractor, which ensures exceptional maneuverability, balance of the special vehicle and high penetration ability of the blade. This design also eliminates the need for diagonal braces because it transfers side loads to the main frame rather than to the dozer blade's push bars.

CAT D9R Bulldozer Attachments

CAT D9R is a universal special vehicle with a large list of additional equipment, the replacement of which does not require a significant amount of time. First of all, these are, naturally, frontal working bodies - bulldozer blades. They are rigid, with a box-shaped profile in the structural frame, made of high-strength steel. These working elements are always ready for use under any working conditions.

  • The spherical blade has a very large capacity. It is used to transport bulky goods over long distances.
  • The hemispherical blade is useful when working with very dense materials, when digging force alone may not be enough, and the characteristics of cutting into the ground are decisive.
  • There are also special-purpose bulldozer blades that are used to perform various types of narrow-profile work of increased complexity.
  • The blade tilt system (additional double skew system) forms the desired tilt angle of the front working body. To solve very complex problems, it is possible to use additional cutting edges and corner cutters. The cutting edges are made of high-strength steel DН2. In order to extend the service life when working with particularly compacted and hard materials, angle cutters are made from DNZ steel.
  • CAT's range of attachments includes specialty blades including coal yard blades, dozer buffer blades, reclamation blades and wood chip blades.

The second important working part of the special vehicle, installed at the rear, is the ripper.

  • Single-shank ripper – designed for difficult conditions and large ripening depths. The operator can change the installation depth of the rack directly from the cab, using the single-shank ripper pin puller (optional). A large one-piece tine is included in the deep ripping kit.
  • Multi-shank ripper – used for lighter conditions and less challenging materials, providing fast work and high levels of productivity. One, two or three teeth are used, depending on the type of soil being developed.

Manufacturers pay attention to a special system for shock-free installation of the ripper tooth, with a device for holding the protective elements of the rack. The tip and post guards are installed easily and simply by rotating the 3/4" ratchet 180 degrees. Replacement does not take much time, no hammer is required, and the level of safety is high. Easy to install, no need to use a hammer and high level of safety. As well as high replacement speed and reduced downtime.

To ensure the necessary weight distribution of the bulldozer for bulldozing work with maximum productivity, a third type of attachment is used - rear counterweights. They can be used for a bulldozer that is not equipped with other rear attachments (ripper).

Hydraulic system

The high performance of the CAT D9R bulldozer is achieved, among other things, by installing a high-quality, productive and reliable hydraulic system. It can be automatically adjusted depending on the degree of workload of the working parts. The hydraulic system includes a return hydraulic circuit from the main equipment to the hydraulic pump. This contributes to the rational distribution of power, depending on the working element involved. The capacity of the hydraulic system is 77 liters of fluid.

This heavy bulldozer is very expensive. However, its popularity throughout the world is determined by such advantages of the special vehicle as the highest reliability, strength and durability in operation.
