Scania portal timber carrier

Portal timber carriers, which have automatic loading and unloading of timber and assortments, also have increased maneuverability.

Portal timber carriers are specially designed for transporting long loads. Such timber trucks are intended for transporting lumber along roads with fairly hard surfaces.

To increase the amount of cargo transported by a timber truck, various spreader trailers are used.

Frame design

Scania truck frames are traditionally characterized by the highest strength and durability with the lowest weight in their class. Scania timber trucks use target-designed chassis , in particular:

  • designed for extra-heavy operating conditions (indicated by the index “E”),
  • with high ground clearance (indicated by the index “H”).

Scania timber chassis have double frames. Thus, the thickness of the main frame member of Scania timber chassis is 9.5 mm. Additional channels, so-called reinforcing liners, 8 mm thick are installed inside the main side members along the entire length of the frame to increase the strength and durability of Scania timber trucks. The distance between the horizontal flanges of the main frame channel is 270 mm and is the optimal indicator for achieving maximum frame strength with the lowest overall chassis height.

Chassis and superstructures

As standard, complete Scania timber trucks, manufactured on the basis of timber chassis, are equipped with hydraulic manipulators from various manufacturers, installed on a retractable hydraulic console. This type of installation is more convenient compared to installing a hydraulic manipulator on a fixed rear frame console/rear overhang. During operation, the manipulator column is moved by a hydraulic cylinder in the direction of the trailer drawbar by approximately 1 m.

In addition, the timber body superstructures of Scania timber trucks include a lot of additional equipment, for example: working lights for illuminating the cargo compartment, slings with tension devices for securing bundles of timber on the vehicle, and others.

Advantages of installing a hydraulic manipulator on a retractable hydraulic console:

  • Convenience of loading a timber chassis: when loading a timber truck, the manipulator column is located at a distance from the end part, which is loaded onto the chassis of a bundle of timber;
  • Convenience of loading a timber trailer: the reach of the hydraulic manipulator boom increases towards the trailer when the console is extended, which allows the use of lighter models of hydraulic manipulators when loading and unloading timber trailers that are part of Scania timber hauling road trains;
  • Ease of dismantling the CMU. With this installation method, the CMU can be disconnected from the timber truck and then easily installed back without additional equipment, if this is necessary, for example, for moving a road train in a submerged state without a manipulator (if there are quick-release hydraulic connections for high-pressure hoses).

Global update 2022 - new SCANIA SUPER solutions

“Scania continues to offer customers a variety of environmentally friendly solutions,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing at Scania. – In the coming years, the share of technology using renewable fuels and electric vehicles will increase significantly, but for now the world still depends on internal combustion engines. This is why Scania’s new engine is so important, as it will help reduce carbon emissions between now and the end of this decade.”

In addition, Scania is switching to a new modular adaptive chassis scheme MACH (Modular Architecture Chassis), which will be available for order in Russia from December 2022. The main feature of the updated chassis is the change in the rules for the location of holes for mounting parts on the frame. This significantly increases flexibility in the development of truck designs, placement of body superstructures and allows customers to choose individual solutions for any task. A new range of D-shaped fuel tanks from 165 to 700 liters has also been developed to optimize fuel consumption.

There are other design changes to the premium trucks, most notably the new Side View Camera (SMVC) system, which includes optional digital rearview mirrors for improved visibility, reduced blind spots and increased safety on the road. The camera system can be configured to suit any combination of vehicles.

As part of the update, Scania ProCare, a premium service based on a flexible maintenance program, will also be launched in the European market, which will ensure 100% trouble-free operation of equipment. The essence of the service is that trucks regularly send reports to Scania about their technical condition, and the company provides preventive maintenance and necessary updates. This will not only prevent inevitable breakdowns, but also process signals about emerging problems. After all, a serious engine breakdown can require up to 40 hours of repair, but fixing a potential problem at an early stage will only take a few hours. Scania ProCare has been successfully trialled in Sweden and Poland and is available for all trucks from model year 2019 onwards.

The comprehensive update, based on the launch of a new range of engines, is an important step towards reducing hydrocarbon emissions. In 2022, Scania presented its science-based targets to meet the terms of the Paris Climate Agreement, becoming the first major heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer to embark on this path. In recent years, the company has reduced CO2 emissions from its own production, transportation and logistics. We are also working tirelessly to reduce fuel consumption during truck operation.

“The overall trend is clear,” summarizes Stefan Dorski, Senior Vice President and Head of Trucks at Scania. “We believe that by 2030, half of our sales in Europe will be electric trucks. But we need to run an environmentally friendly and profitable business today. Achieving our goals ensures Scania that our investments are transformative for the future.”
