Scania G440 6x6 dump truck with rock body

Scania G-Series are large-capacity trucks designed to perform a wide range of different tasks. The versatility of this family is due to the presence of many configurations.

Trucks are capable of carrying out any mainline and distribution operations, as well as the most difficult types of work in harsh climatic and road conditions, with maximum efficiency.

The Scania G-Series family was first introduced to the general public in 2007. Serial production of trucks is also carried out at the present time, but with a large number of improvements and changes. The models are indeed in great demand in many world markets, including Russian.

Modifications

Among the main advantages of this family, a diverse line of modified versions should be noted, which allows the consumer to choose the most suitable option for performing a certain range of tasks. The manufacturer offers:

  • Several cabin variations: shortened, day and extended with a sleeping bag;
  • Several chassis options: standard, low, very low, semi-high, and high;
  • Many options for wheel formulas: 4x2; 4x4; 6x2; 6x4; 6x6; 8x2; 8x6; 8x4; 10x4; 10x6;
  • Two power units with a displacement of 9 or 13 liters, which can use diesel and biodiesel fuel, gas, and ethanol for operation;
  • Several transmission options include eight- and twelve-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

In addition to all this, the manufacturer presented four separate modifications designed to perform specific tasks. Each of them has its own factory index. This list includes:

Scania G400 main tractor

This model is a two-axle truck with a 4x2 wheel arrangement. The Scania G400 is designed for cargo transportation as part of a road train on public roads. The frame is equipped with a fifth wheel hitch, allowing the truck to work with a wide range of semi-trailers.

The long-haul tractor has a raised, modern G-class cab. It has a comfortable two-seater salon. The standard version of the cabin is equipped with one sleeping bunk, the width of which is 700 millimeters. The “Highline” version is also available to consumers, in which the manufacturer has placed an additional second shelf with a width of 600 millimeters.

The curb weight of the tractor is 8190 kilograms. The maximum permitted weight can reach 19,000 kilograms. Of these, the front axle accounts for 7,500, and the rear axle, 11,500. The maximum weight of a truck as part of a road train can be 40,000 kilograms.

Under the cab there is a six-cylinder in-line diesel power plant of the DC13 103 brand, having a displacement of 13 liters. Among the equipment of this engine, it is worth noting a direct fuel injection system and a turbocharging system with intercooling of charge air. All this allows it to develop a maximum output of 400 horsepower and a torque of 2100 Newton meters.

Complete with the engine, the truck is equipped with a twelve-speed manual transmission of the GRS905 brand. It has a divider, a multiplier, two reduction gears and two reverse gears. In addition, this gearbox has a mechanical single-disc clutch with wear protection. A lockable cross-axle differential was used on the rear axle, which had a positive effect on the tractor's cross-country ability.

All-terrain dump truck Scania G440

This modification is an all-wheel drive large-capacity dump truck with a 6x6 wheel arrangement. The truck is focused on transporting any bulk and lumpy cargo on roads of all categories, including even off-road. The equipment is very popular in many fields of activity, including agriculture and utilities, industry, construction, road repair services and many others.

The model has an all-metal cabin with a modern appearance and a comfortable interior that can comfortably accommodate two people.

When equipped, the dump truck weighs 16,000 kilograms. At the same time, it has a maximum carrying capacity of 25,000 kilograms, which is a very good indicator. The maximum permissible weight of the truck can reach 41,000 kilograms. Of these, 9,000 are assigned to the front axle and 32,000 to the rear bogie.

Already in the standard version, the Scania G440 is equipped with a reinforced dump body, in the manufacture of which high-strength steel grades were used. The volume of such a body is 16 cubic meters. A special hydraulic lifting mechanism is responsible for unloading the body, providing a lift of 58 degrees. For operation in conditions of low negative temperatures, an underbody heating system was introduced, implemented by venting exhaust gases under the body. Thanks to this, the load does not stick or freeze to the platform.

As the engine for this modification, the manufacturer chose a six-cylinder in-line diesel power unit of the DC13 102 brand, which has a total displacement of 13 liters and a maximum output power of 440 horsepower. This engine has a turbocharging system with intercooling of charge air and a direct fuel injection system into the combustion chambers. As for the torque, at its peak it reaches 2300 Newton meters.

The dump truck's transmission includes an eight-speed manual gearbox with a range, one reduction gear and one reverse gear. This gearbox operates with the engine through a mechanical single-plate clutch. It is also worth noting that the truck has all-wheel drive and lockable cross-axle and center differentials.

Scania G440 mining dump truck

It is also a large-capacity dump truck, but with an 8x4 wheel arrangement. This truck is mainly designed for transporting large volumes of bulk and lumpy cargo, both on public roads and off-road. This model is in greatest demand in the mining industry. A distinctive feature of the modification is its increased resistance to severe operating conditions, due to which it can be used in almost all regions of Russia.

The mining dump truck still has the same G-class cabin, which has a high level of comfort and a fairly modern appearance. There are two comfortable seats inside, but there is no sleeping space.

The maximum load capacity of the truck is 32,000 kilograms, which is quite impressive. The maximum permissible weight reaches 50,000 kilograms, of which 18,000 rest on the front axles and 32,000 on the rear axles.

Behind the cab there is a welded box-section dump body. It is made using high strength steel. Depending on the version of the truck, body volume can vary from 20 to 32.5 cubic meters. But all versions have the same lifting mechanism, consisting of a hydraulic telescopic cylinder. In addition, a bottom heating system is also implemented here to prevent freezing and sticking of cargo to the platform.

The six-cylinder in-line diesel power unit of the DC13 102 brand was chosen as the power plant for this modification. With a working volume of 13 liters, this engine develops a maximum output power of 440 horsepower, and the highest torque is 2300 Newton meters. The engine has direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system with intercooling of the charge air.

The standard solution for the installed engine was a twelve-speed manual transmission with two reduction gears. In addition, there is an automatic gear change, a mechanical single-disc clutch, as well as lockable cross-wheel and center differentials.

Timber truck Scania G480

It is a cross-country timber transport truck. This truck has a 6x6 wheel arrangement, which allows it to move not only on public roads, but even off-road. Its main purpose is to transport logs, lumber, poles, pipes and other similar cargo.

Regardless of the configuration, the timber truck uses a spacious and very modern cabin, which is also found on other modifications of the G-Series family. There are two comfortable seats inside, and the driver's seat has many settings for adjusting the position. Behind the seats there is a sleeping shelf, the width of which is 700 millimeters.

The curb weight of the log carrier reaches 16,500 kilograms. It has a maximum load capacity of 18,000 kilograms. Thus, the total weight of the car can reach up to 34,500, of which 8,500 rests on the front axle and 26,000 on the rear axles.

The heart of this truck is a six-cylinder in-line power unit of the DC13 101 brand, running on diesel fuel. This engine is equipped with a direct fuel injection system and a turbocharging system with intercooling of the charge air. With a displacement of 13 liters, this engine is capable of developing a maximum output power of 480 horsepower. As for the maximum torque, it is 2400 Newton meters.

Paired with the proposed engine is a twelve-speed manual gearbox, which has a range, a divider, two reduction gears and two reverse gears, as well as a mechanical single-plate clutch. It is worth noting that the entire transmission of the truck is all-wheel drive. In order to increase cross-country ability, the manufacturer installed inter-wheel and inter-axle locking differentials.

Add-on options

The Scania G-Series family of trucks can be customized to suit a wide range of applications. In addition to ready-made modifications offered by the manufacturer, various add-on options can be installed on the vehicle chassis, including:

  1. Onboard cargo platform;
  2. Manufactured goods van;
  3. Isothermal van;
  4. Refrigerator booth;
  5. Crane-manipulator installation;
  6. Car tank;
  7. Garbage truck;
  8. Municipal equipment.

The P series includes distribution trucks designed for everyday work in the trade. Well-thought-out features of the interior and exterior help to individually select a verified package in accordance with the needs of each specific business.

Their diesel engines have been specially developed and adapted for urban use: in delivery trucks, straddle loaders and airfield service vehicles.

The P series machines are characterized by excellent visibility and handling, a high level of safety and a sense of control, convenient access to the cabin, and the ability to easily and quickly get in and out. This is facilitated by large, ergonomically inclined steps, large comfortable handrails, and a low floor level.

The cabins are compact, double. In addition to a day cab with additional space behind the seats, a short cab is also available to reduce the overall length of the vehicle. As an option, you can order the installation of undivided seats in the cabin for two passengers, thereby turning it into a three-seater. There is also a cab option with a berth.

Cabin height: 2920 mm without air deflector - in a simple short cabin; 2920 or 3260 mm without air deflector - in the day cabin with additional space behind the seats; 2920, 3260 mm or 3520 mm without air deflector - in a long cabin with a berth (it can be 80 cm or 1 meter wide)

Air suspension improves the efficiency of cargo transportation, helping to carry out loading and unloading operations faster. The chassis height is easily adjustable for convenient loading and unloading.

The P series offers vehicles with different wheelbases, as well as the ability to select the optimal axle arrangement for bodies of a certain length. As a result, optimal weight distribution and an extremely tight turning radius in tight urban spaces are guaranteed.

Cabin

For Scania G-Series trucks, the manufacturer has provided several different cab options, differing mainly in their overall dimensions and volume of internal space. Dump trucks and trucks for day use often have a CG14 cab, which does not have a sleeper bunk.

Long-haul tractors, not counting car transporters, can be equipped with the two most spacious types of cabins, known under the symbols CG19N and CG19H. The numbers in the indices indicate the internal length of the cabin in decimeters, which in this case is 190 centimeters.

The cab with the CG19N index is most often found on the Scania G400 truck tractor. It is the basic option and has an average height from floor to roof. Regardless of the cab variations, it has an air suspension that connects to the frame at four points. The cabin also has a special stabilizer with a normal degree of rigidity.

The Scania G400 Highline Streamline version has almost the same cabin design, but its height has been increased. As a result, this option was assigned the index CG19H. Here the height from carpets to ceiling is 1910 millimeters, which is identical to similar cabins of the Scania R-Series family. However, they differ only in the height of the central tunnel, which covers the power unit. In the G-Series it is 160 millimeters higher.

The interior of all cabins turned out to be neat, rational, and, of course, comfortable. The truck tractor is equipped with a premium driver's seat, which has a comfortable anatomical shape, air suspension that perfectly absorbs road irregularities, and electric heating, which makes work in harsh climatic conditions more comfortable. High-quality wear-resistant fabric is used as seat upholstery.

There is no suspension on the passenger seat; it is rigidly fixed to the floor. But it has a special mechanism that allows you to recline the back and thereby make a compact dining table.

The dashboard has a design traditional for Scania trucks. It is long and turns slightly towards the driver for greater convenience. The steering wheel has leather trim, usually black. As with many other trucks, if we consider the sleeper versions, the gear lever can be folded if necessary.

To store any things and documents in the cabin, there are a lot of niches and compartments. One of them is located almost opposite the passenger seat. This small compartment has a lockable lid. Other compartments come in the form of pockets in the door panels.

The largest cabin has two comfortable sleeping berths behind the seatbacks. The lower one has a width of 700 millimeters, while the upper one is 600. The space under the lower shelf is occupied by a spacious glove box.

The basic configuration has a fairly diverse set of equipment. The truck is equipped with a central locking system that is remote controlled. In addition, the cabin has an autonomous dry heating system with a capacity of 2 kilowatts, a good radio, an electronic tachograph, and an FMS telematics system with a “Monitoring” package.

Along the plain with stops

The M1 federal highway, popularly known as the Minsk Highway, is characterized by a smooth, good surface, markings, lighting in difficult areas and other benefits. The intensity of traffic here is high in the near Moscow region, gradually decreasing as they move away from Moscow, and drivers pass through the Smolensk region at a good traveling pace. There are two lanes in each direction almost along the entire route, but there are also traffic lights, both at rare intersections and pedestrian ones. The rolling stock of Muscovites, local residents and citizens of the union state, of whom there are many on this road, varies greatly. This leads to the fact that, even when driving a truck, you often have to overtake, but without entering the lane of oncoming traffic. And in the areas of Vyazma and Gagarin there are a couple of good slopes, and at the top of one of them there is a traffic light. Why am I talking about this? It was on this route that I decided to test the dark red “Griffin”, since I picked it up from a parking lot in the Golitsyno area, and the set of properties of this section of the road is quite suitable to simulate the most typical situations and modes of an average intercity flight.

Folding table, under it is a fuse box. It is very important that no tools are required to access fuses and relays!

Fuel consumption

Scania G-Series trucks consume an average of 30 to 35 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers, which is quite an excellent figure for this truck segment.

Engine service life

According to the manufacturer, the installed power plants are designed for a fairly impressive range of about two million kilometers.

SCANIA OPTICRUISE

Scania Opticruise is an intelligent gearshift system.
The switching algorithm adapts to driving style, load and road profile, allowing you to increase the average speed without increasing fuel consumption. With Scania Opticruise, gear changes are faster and smoother, resulting in greater comfort and reduced fuel consumption. And when switching to maneuvering mode, the system guarantees the movement of the road train with increased precision. Introduced in 1996, Scania Opticruise technology was one of the first automated gear shift systems. It has been continuously improved since then, and the current version was introduced in 2009 with completely updated software and optimized functionality, including an integrated maneuver mode and automatic rocking mode, as well as high power and downshift modes. According to your preferences, you can choose a fully automatic version or a version with a clutch pedal.

The system includes several modes:

  • “A” – automatic, “M” – manual, “AP/MP” – high power mode, “AO/MO” – off-road mode (automatic/manual), “N” – neutral gear, “R” – reverse.

checkpoint

Standard on many Scania G-Series trucks is the GRS905 twelve-speed manual transmission, equipped with two crawler gears and two reverse gears. In addition, this gearbox has a range and divider.

The transmission operates with the power unit through a dry-type mechanical single-plate clutch. To increase its service life, the manufacturer applied wear protection.

The modification of the all-wheel drive dump truck is equipped with an eight-speed manual transmission, which has one reduction gear and one reverse gear. The clutch in this version remains unchanged.

Regardless of the model, all trucks have lockable cross-wheel and center differentials, which significantly increases cross-country ability, especially in the case of all-wheel drive versions.

The Scania R420 received positive reviews after successful tests. The equipment was tested on different road surfaces. For example, when traveling along a highway for a distance of 377 kilometers, the average fuel consumption was just over 32 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers of road, and when moving a truck on a flat section, the fuel consumption for a section length of up to 35 kilometers was 22 liters, at the speed of the vehicle 83 kilometers per hour. Also, the new freight vehicles were tested on local roads, where on a road section of up to 70 kilometers, at a speed of 63 kilometers per hour, the vehicle processes within 38 liters of fuel fluid per hundred kilometers. When driving a vehicle on terrain with a steep relief, the optimal speed limit will be 43 kilometers per hour, while the consumption of flammable substances will be 144 liters per hundred kilometers of terrain. All tests of the massive car were carried out at temperatures ranging from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius.

Chassis

The front axle of all modifications of the truck is equipped with a dependent suspension, represented by longitudinally located parabolic springs, a transverse stabilizer and hydraulic bi-directional telescopic shock absorbers.

The rear part of the truck, depending on the modification, may have a different design. If we consider a truck tractor, then it uses pneumatic cushions made of rubber. For dump trucks, including quarry ones, multi-leaf springs and a stabilizer bar are used.

Cabins on Scania dump trucks are used in the P and G series, low, in short or extended versions. We offer a wide selection of dump bodies, including special ones: for transporting rocks and for transporting coal. A series of heavy four-axle Scania dump trucks are named after the heroes of the ancient Scandinavian epics - Odin and Hagen. Scania’s particularly durable heavy trucks are called the “XT series”.

Peculiarities

Most reviews of Scania trucks are quite positive. As drivers note, these trucks have high build quality, reliability, and durability of all components and assemblies.

One of the main qualities is excellent maneuverability and excellent visibility from the driver's seat, not only forward, but in all directions, including rear view.

The G-series cabin has a very nice appearance. But besides this, it has very comfortable working conditions for the driver. In some modifications there is a comfortable sleeping place that allows you to stretch out to your full height. The driver's seat is equipped with air suspension and many adjustments, which, together with an adjustable steering column, allows you to choose the most comfortable position depending on your body type and height.

The manufacturer also paid considerable attention to ergonomics. In the cabin, almost every element is thought out to the smallest detail.

As befits European trucks, Scania has excellent sound insulation. Thanks to the use of high-quality materials, it was possible to achieve silence in the cabin when the engine is running, and this has a positive effect on driver comfort.

A lot of flattering reviews are addressed to the installed engines. They have excellent traction. It is worth noting that even with the maximum permitted weight, the truck is able to overcome long climbs without much difficulty. The service life of the motors is a very impressive two million kilometers. As for the fuel system, it is not picky about the quality of diesel fuel, but it is still not recommended to fill the tank with dubious diesel fuel.

Compared to other European trucks, the G-series has a low cost of spare parts, consumables and components. Due to this, servicing the truck is cheaper than other models.

All these qualities have made this family the most widespread on the Russian market among European-made trucks. Although their cost is significantly higher than that of MAZ and KamAZ trucks, they have a truly very high level of comfort and reliability.

The project continues

Is this “Griffin” worth the money? I think yes. The main advantages are a powerful engine and a smart, convenient transmission, an optimized package of options, which moves this truck tractor further and further away from the budget range, but also does not allow its price to skyrocket. Reliability, brand. If we are talking about Scania, then there is no doubt about it. But still I found several assembly flaws. I didn’t like the vibration at idle; it seemed to me that it “leaks” into the cabin through the air suspension cushions. The steering wheel spoke is slightly turned to the right when driving straight ahead. The mechanics told me that this is the case with all new cars. Apparently, the adjustment of the angles of the front wheels is carried out on the front axle and frame. We measured it and checked it several times: all the angles are normal, it doesn’t “chew” the rubber. But still, it’s somehow ugly or something.

Now I propose to return a little to the origins of the Scania Griffin project, in 2001. There were complaints about the cars of the first series, despite satisfaction with the project as a whole. At the beginning of the new millennium, Scania Griffin drivers often complained about the insufficient capacity of the fuel tank, one berth, and there were not enough powerful enough engines in the offered range to work with heavy loads. The accumulated experience and timely breakthrough to the market with the concept of a budget but full-fledged tractor have today made it possible to create an optimal package and a special package of options at a tolerable price. A curious example against this background is the brake system with drum mechanisms - conservative, but more stable in bad road conditions.

A good long-haul tractor for two pennies is impossible in principle, and there is no need to try to build an effective inter-regional transportation business when there is a shortage of investment. What goes around comes around. But paying for something that is obviously inoperative in our conditions or that you will never use is also irrational. The Griffin project has been improving for the second decade, subtly capturing the spirit of the times, and therefore approaching that very golden mean...
