Do-it-yourself repair of the Mole cultivator: size for belt and spare parts for motor cultivator
A cultivator is a technical tool that performs the following functions:
- weed control;
- plowing the soil;
- loosening;
- applying various fertilizers to the soil.
During intensive use, some components and parts of the unit may become damaged . Therefore, you should purchase the necessary spare parts in advance (perhaps on the day of purchase of the cultivator itself). This will allow it to return to functionality immediately after a breakdown.
About the device and manufacturer
The main elements of the cultivator are a gearbox, levers, a fuel tank, a frame, a motor, a support, a wheel, and a blade of the working element. Torque transmission is ensured by a gearbox that is built into the engine.
The knives of the machine are designed to cut layers of soil, easily mix and chop them. Operating the device is effortless.
The Mole cultivator has gained popularity among gardeners and gardeners due to the fact that it carefully removes weeds and mixes various fertilizers with the soil.
Prominent representatives of the same reliable and high-quality equipment are the cultivators Tarpan, Patriot, Champion, Swift, Texas and Viking. For more information about the work of the Mole cultivator, watch the video:
All this contributes to intensive plant growth and large yields.
The Mole is a model of a Soviet and Russian cultivator, which began production back in 1983. Its production was established by the Moscow Machine-Building Enterprise named after. Chernysheva.
It is a leading company in the defense-industrial complex, employing the best specialists in the country. Now the production of the Mole cultivator has been established in the city of Omsk.
Today the complex includes several production facilities:
- foundry;
- galvanic;
- blacksmithing;
- mechanical assembly;
- welding
The quality control system used in the company has a Certificate of Conformity “NO “SOYUZSERT”.
The main features of the Mole motor-cultivator have always been increased engine life and operational reliability .
Description of the design of the Mole walk-behind tractor
The frame, consisting of two half-frames, is bolted to the gearbox. Tubular cultivator control handles and a bracket for installing additional attachments are located at the rear of the walk-behind tractor. The handles contain controls for engine speed and clutch (on the Krot-2 modification, reverse gear is also engaged).
The output shafts of the Krot gearbox are equipped with soil cutters with a diameter of 320 mm for plowing the soil, weeding or wheels (for working with a hiller (or plow, as well as for operating a cultivator with a trolley). An internal combustion engine is attached to the frame, connected by a V-belt transmission to the input shaft of the gearbox.
The fuel tank is located on top. Lifting wheels are used to roll the cultivator, but during operation they must be raised or removed.
Spare parts
If any parts fail, they must be replaced with new ones. The most popular spare parts for walk-behind tractors are housings, spare blades, motors, and gearboxes. The engine on the Mole is installed with a power of 4.5 hp.
If the gearbox is built into a sealed housing, when repairing the device, you will have to change the engine, including. Modern walk-behind tractor models are equipped with both gasoline and diesel engines .
Old style
Older devices need repairs much more often than newer models.
This explains the demand for old-style parts. For example, if a device needs a gas cap , a spark plug cap, or a starter dog, it will take time to find the right part.
For such purposes, online store catalogs have been opened.
Belt
From time to time, when operating the Mole walk-behind tractor, you may notice the belt slipping. This problem can be avoided by installing 2 belts. Proper installation requires an oversized idler pulley with driven pulley.
The roller is placed on bearings. To improve the cultivator, you only need to remove the old one and install a new roller.
The unit uses an A-750 drive belt. It is 750mm long, 8mm high and 13mm wide.
- cord;
- wrapping layer;
- technical volcanic rubber.
The main task of the belt is to transmit torque from the motor to various components of the device. The belt is marked according to size (mm). Can be used at temperatures from +30 to +60 degrees.
Used in traditional drives, used in agricultural units. The belt is one of the most important elements of the cultivator. In order for the device to work at full power, original belts are required.
The belt for the mole 710 cultivator is installed on units with a Russian engine. The profile of the product is 13 mm.
Price of the Mole walk-behind tractor, new and used
The cost of the new Krot-2 walk-behind tractor is currently about 20,000 rubles. On electronic bulletin boards in many regions of the former Union there are many offers for the sale of used motoblocks “MK-1 Krot” and “Krot-2”. They ask for from 7,000 to 12,000 rubles (depending on the technical condition). There are also a lot of offers for the sale of various spare parts and components for “Mole” of all modifications.
This small (both in size and power) agricultural technology is used primarily for loosening, leveling, and harrowing land on small (up to 0.1 hectares) plots of land. The instructions for the Mole walk-behind tractor indicate that it is intended for shallow (up to 25 centimeters) tillage (milling without turning the layer) of soil; its loosening, harrowing, leveling, weeding between rows and other similar work “on personal plots, vegetable gardens and garden plots with a cultivated area of 0.04 to 0.1 hectares).”
Providing the Mole walk-behind tractor with a reverse gear improved its performance in shallow areas, as well as when operating the MK with additional attachments: a trolley, a mower, etc. And the new engine contributed to an increase in productivity, while simultaneously reducing operating fuel consumption, reducing noise levels, and increasing working life. Some manufacturing options are possible, slightly differing in the shape or design of the air cleaner, carburetor, fuel valve, gas tank and other parts.
Repair
After turning on the cultivator for the first time, the load on the engine is not full . The break-in period is indicated in the unit instructions. Each part needs to be ground in. Otherwise, serious repairs will soon have to be made.
If the device is old and is not covered by the warranty, you can make minor repairs not only to the Mole cultivator, but also to a cultivator for the garden, a manual cultivator for the dacha, an electric cultivator for the dacha, and a do-it-yourself garden cultivator. It's a simple process. The main thing is to carefully familiarize yourself with the unit.
The design of the cultivator has always been so simple that a person with basic technical knowledge can independently repair and modernize it (see the article homemade with an engine from a walk-behind tractor)
What kind of oil is being used?
To lubricate the parts of the walk-behind tractor, M-8B oil is poured into it. Developed during the existence of the USSR, it is considered one of the highest quality products in its category.
Oil M-8V:
Options | Values according to GOST |
Kinematic viscosity mm2/s | 7.5-8.5 (at a temperature of 100ºС) and 1200 at 0ºС |
Viscosity index | 93 |
Mechanical impurities, percentage | 0,015 |
Pour point, ºС | -25 |
Corrosion on lead plates, g/m2 | 10 |
Sulfated ash content, % | 0,95 |
Mass fraction of active elements: zinc phosphorus-calcium | 0,09 0,090,16 |
Density at a temperature of 25ºС, g/cm3 | 0,905 |
M-8B oil has another name - Autol. It is produced from distillate components. The finished mixture is thermally treated with the addition of active additives. They increase the quality properties of the oil. Thanks to this, the scope of its application is expanding.
Other oils may also be used. For example, when using SAE 30 and 10W-30 oils, you need to consider the following:
- SAE 30 oil should not be used at temperatures below 4°C. This will make it difficult to start the engine;
- At temperatures exceeding 27°C, 10W-30 cannot be used. The consequence of such actions will be increased oil consumption.
If the motor is equipped with a gearbox , its maintenance is carried out as follows:
- Unscrew the oil filler cap and the neck plug to check the oil;
- remove the drain cover and drain the oil;
- tighten the drain plug;
- pour oil into the filler neck until it flows out of the oil check hole;
- tighten all plugs.
Before draining the oil through the top pipe, you must first empty the fuel tank. Otherwise, fuel will leak out. The result may be a fire.
Ignition repair
Faulty ignition is one of the most common problems that arise when operating a Mole cultivator. First you need to check the spark plug. It must be unscrewed and carefully inspected.
Dry means the fuel does not reach the cylinder. A wet spark plug is a warning that the cylinder needs drying. To do this, the engine is pumped with a manual starter.
If you find heavy carbon deposits on the spark plug, it needs to be cleaned with sandpaper and gasoline.
You need to measure the gap between the electrodes. It should be no less and no more than 0.8 mm. Otherwise it should be adjusted. If there is no spark, you need to install a new spark plug.
Owner reviews of motoblocks “Krot” and “Krot-2”
Since this model is widespread, there are a huge number of owner reviews about it on the Internet. Moreover, the reviews are completely opposite: from “completely sucks, bought it, suffered and barely got rid of it” to “our irreplaceable assistant, has been serving without breakdowns for 10 years.”
In fairness, it should be noted that the majority of positive recommendations about “Moles” and about working with them. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle between two opposing points of view.
In general, the equipment is reliable and hardworking. It loosens the soil efficiently - better than with a plow and faster than with a shovel. At the same time, it crushes weeds and their roots.
For virgin and complex (in particular, clayey) soils, the MK-1 Mole is of little use: the motor power is clearly insufficient, it overheats; the quality of processing leaves much to be desired; you have to go through the same area two or three times. But the more powerful Krot-2 can already show quite satisfactory performance on such lands.
The weak point of the “Mole” is the piston group; after several years of operation, almost every “Mole driver” has to change the piston with rings. Over time, the starter fails, but it is usually not restored, using a matuska rope wound around the starter shaft to start the engine.
The frame and handles are not very strong, according to many owners, and they have to be strengthened by welding additional parts. And the main gearbox, cutters, belt drive, clutch are reliable and durable, they work properly. The reliability of operation and service life of the Mole walk-behind tractor will increase significantly if you strictly follow the instructions for its operation and maintenance set out in the instructions.
For example: do not use the walk-behind tractor at full capacity for the first 15 hours of its operation - the period of running-in of all parts. A typical mistake is this: the newly-minted owner of a motorized cultivator, “to celebrate,” immediately sets the technique at a rapid pace on difficult soils. As a result, the capabilities of the already weak motor are further reduced in the future.
The owners also note that during operation, the space between the rotary knives and the gearbox housing can often become clogged with earth, stones, roots, wire and other foreign objects. You must immediately turn off the engine of the walk-behind tractor and carefully remove stuck objects. If the soil is hard or there are a lot of small stones (roots) in it, then it is necessary to reduce the rotation speed of the rotary knives.
When transporting a walk-behind tractor in the trunk of a car, in order to prevent oil from spilling out of the gearboxes, lay the walk-behind tractor on its side, with the starter facing up, while the fitting (tube with a rubber plug) for pouring oil into the working shaft gearbox should be raised relative to the bottom of the gearbox. The use of high-quality motor oil for mixing with gasoline is also of great importance.
Service
Timely maintenance helps keep equipment in peak functional condition. The instructions will help you troubleshoot the Mole cultivator.
Unit maintenance procedure:
- cleaning the cylinder head. The part is washed and dried;
- carbon deposits are removed from the cylinder;
- the channels, as well as the muffler and carburetor , are cleaned with fuel;
- The crankcase seal should be replaced after complete disassembly of the gearbox;
- Use a cloth soaked in gasoline to remove carbon deposits from the muffler.
Following these procedures will keep the unit in working order for many years.

Blow with air, disassemble and clean the fuel supply system;
Check the cylinder head cover gasket for integrity and replace it if necessary.
Air filter
An important element thanks to which the normal power of the unit is maintained and less fuel is consumed. The air filter for the Mole cleans the air masses from all kinds of particles and dust, which are sufficient when working in the field.
The material from which it is made is paper, which is based on cellulose fiber. If the filter is dirty, the air-fuel mixture will not function properly in the carburetor, which will negatively affect the operation of the device. Contamination is assessed visually.
If the filter is still dirty, it must be replaced immediately. Alternatively, it can be disassembled and cleaned, but this is only in case of surface contamination.
Disassembling the filter proceeds as follows:
- The filter housing is removed by unscrewing the nut on it.
- The body is washed with water and wiped dry.
- The filter element can be cleaned with a jet of air.
- If this does not help, the filter is replaced.

Tips and tricks
If you need a working tiller, be sure to undergo regular maintenance. You should not buy “left-handed parts”. Regular inspection of the unit by a professional will extend its service life.
After purchasing a cultivator you must:
- start to produce the fuel mixture from the carburetor;
- treat all moving parts with oil or special lubricant;
- After work, drain the fuel regularly.
In order to repair the device as rarely as possible, the load should be correctly calculated. This will protect the equipment from premature failure.
We recommend that you read the article about the K60V carburetor.
Communities › Kulibin Club › Blog › Mole cultivator breaks belts
Today I set up my mole again. And this is what I got to the bottom of. I started setting the alignment, bought 3 washers at a hardware store with an internal diameter of 18 mm and the fit didn’t work out very well:
I started setting it using a ruler and a caliper.
It still didn’t work out well, I turned the pulley over and changed the belt from the original one to a belt from a gazelle with a hydraulic booster.
On it he went deep to the very ... wings to a full opener
I slightly tightened the belt with the motor.
so that the cutters tear when the clutch is depressed, but they don’t move, but when the clutch is depressed, they drive. When the walk-behind tractor is standing, the pulley spins, but the gearbox does not move (maybe that’s why it gets so hot?) And the Mole started digging
I removed the belt protection on purpose so that the unit in which the problem is visible could be seen. I plowed much more than with a regular belt, and still dug up less than 1.5 acres and the belt got hot and began to disintegrate.
I don’t know what to do or what to do, everything seems to be aligned and tensioned, but why is the belt burning? Maybe the pulley is small? Or something else? Here's a short report, maybe someone else can tell me what? Thank you friends for answering!
Review: VAZ 2108-099 BRT V-belt generator - Suitable for the Krot-OM motor cultivator.
A break in the drive belt in the Krot-OM motor-cultivator is absolutely safe.
The outside of the belt is covered with a protective cover, so if it breaks, it will not fly away anywhere. In this case, the cutters will simply stop rotating, and that’s it. To replace the belt and further tension it, you have to unscrew the protective cover and then loosen the mount of the engine to the cultivator. Subsequently, after replacing the belt, the engine is shifted to the desired position to ensure the required belt slack in the normal clutch disengaged state. It is clear that there was nowhere to buy a drive belt designed specifically for the “Mole”. This model of motor cultivator has long been discontinued, and many spare parts for it are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Therefore, we took an old belt and went to a regular car store to find an analogue that was suitable in size. And it was a success. The generator V-belt, designed for cars of the VAZ 2108-099 model line, was just right in shape and size. The brand of the belt is BRT, and all that is known about it is that this manufacturer supplies some rubber products, including timing belts and others, to the AVTOVAZ assembly line.
Appearance of the label with which the belt was sold:
But this is a store label. This belt did not have any branded factory label, much less packaging. Another perspective on its label:
Externally, the quality of the belt does not cause any complaints. The domestic industry produced exactly the same belts about thirty years ago. True, under other brands. Close-up of a belt fragment:
But the absence of a factory label, as well as branded packaging, does not allow us to be sure that this belt is not a fake. And that it is precisely a product manufactured under the BRT brand. But buyers of auto parts for domestic passenger cars often encounter a similar situation. And here is the old torn belt from the motor-cultivator drive:
This is the total destruction of its structure:
How he was able to live to such a state, and not break earlier, remains a complete mystery:
Two belts side by side, an old torn V-belt, and a new V-belt BRT VAZ 2108-099:
Next, measure the length of the new belt from the BRT:
It complies with the norm. Subsequently, the installation of this belt on a motor cultivator was successful, and so far it has proven itself well in operation. However, the era of the Krot-OM motor-cultivator is becoming a thing of the past because the main component for its operation, namely gasoline with an octane rating of A-80, has become impossible to find on the open market. But this motor cultivator cannot operate on 92-octane gasoline, because such gasoline overheats its cylinder, and subsequently the piston jams. The problem is also aggravated by the poor starting ability of the motor-cultivator engine, which is why it has become difficult to start it on old stocks of old A-80 gasoline. Therefore, soon after purchasing a new BRT belt, as well as a new carburetor repair kit for the “Mole,” we still had to purchase a new motor cultivator. It turned out to be an Elitech KB 70 model. The four-stroke engine of such a motor cultivator is capable of running on 92-octane gasoline, and without adding engine oil to it. What’s interesting is that the new motor cultivator also uses a belt drive to drive the cutters.
