The beginning of the history of GAZ 3897 can be considered 1980. They tried to modify the Gaz-66, a unique car in its own way, and create a hooded truck with the same high cross-country ability. Appearance
The GAZ-3308 car is practically no different in design from its civilian predecessor, the GAZ-3307, which was produced since the early 90s. The layout of the cabin and body is very practical. Round headlights and turn signals are placed separately and are not built into the bumper (as KAMAZ and MAZ do now on their 5-ton models). If one of the lamps is damaged, the rest will be in good condition, and in the event of a frontal impact, the entire load is taken by the frame with a massive metal bumper, and only then by the cabin. The shape of the glazing is also very simple. The car does not have any standout features other than the radiator grille with the GAZ emblem. At the same time, the cabin is designed in such a way that even with maximum damage, the car will drive without breakdowns, and a dented part of the cabin can be replaced using a minimal set of tools.
By the way, the design of the GAZ-3307 truck, as well as its all-wheel drive modification, is not much different from the 53rd GAZon, which is very often called a legend of the Soviet automobile industry. In appearance, all these cars were no different from others - at that time the emphasis was not on a beautiful exterior, but on a powerful and reliable design. Interior of the car
The inside of the truck is also no different from the 3307 model. The straight instrument panel, made of plastic, is painted exclusively in matte black - this solution is used on both military and civilian versions of the LAWN. The quality of the finishing materials itself, according to drivers, is far from the best - the plastic is very noisy and hard to the touch. Although, on the other hand, no one here thought about attractiveness at all. Inside, on the passenger side, there is a small glove compartment for things and other small items. The gear shift lever of an unusual curved shape is located in the center. The gear shift diagram is not marked on it - it is placed on the instrument panel in the form of a sticker. This curved design of the gearshift knob was not chosen by chance: it was made to make it more convenient for people to move around the cabin. By the way, on 53 GAZONS, instead of one driver’s and one passenger seat, there was a solid (but very comfortable) sofa. It is very easy to move around the cabin with such a seat - there are no obstacles under your feet.
But let's return to the all-wheel drive GAZ 3308 model. Continuing the conversation about the interior, I would like to note the presence of a new ventilation system and a powerful stove, thanks to which the air temperature in the cabin is maintained at a level of plus 10-15 degrees in the most severe frost.
The instrument panel seems to be strewn with all sorts of measuring scales, scattered horizontally. It seems as if you are driving not a domestic truck, but some kind of spacecraft. At the same time, the data from the arrows is very easy to read, and it is almost impossible to get confused in them - everything is so clear and informative.
The transfer case levers are located near the rear wall of the cab. There are several of them: one engages a lower gear, and the second connects the front axle. Visibility from the driver's side is excellent. This is achieved not only due to the large glazing, but also thanks to the huge side mirrors. Since the cabin is slightly narrower in size than the booth, they are elongated by several centimeters. But this does not in any way affect visibility, much less traffic safety. By the way, thanks to special sliding arches, both mirrors can be easily folded.
About the disadvantages
However, despite technological progress, the LAWN has retained its old problems. So, the most vulnerable link is the quality of sound insulation. There is practically no noise in the cabin, so the hum and vibrations from the diesel engine are clearly audible every second. Owners of gasoline modifications of the GAZ-3308 are a little lucky - vibrations from the engine are practically not felt here.

Among the gasoline engines, there is one V-shaped “eight” produced in Trans-Volga region ZMZ-513.10 with a displacement of 4.25 liters and a power of 116 horsepower.
