Gearbox features
Thanks to the increased number of gears, the user can select the appropriate speed for any agricultural operation. The gearbox for a walk-behind tractor has an increased gear ratio, which allows you to increase the capabilities of the unit using less power.
The gearbox of the Neva walk-behind tractor is equipped with silicone sealant, which provides a reinforced coating of the housing. A special feature of the gearbox of the Neva walk-behind tractor is that the components necessary for changing gears are mounted on its outer part of the housing.
The MultiAgro gearbox is mechanical, gear, chain, has a streamlined shape that reduces resistance during plowing. The oil level in the gearbox ensures successful operation of the unit and protects the engine from premature wear.
A cross-sectional diagram of a classic gearbox and MultiAgro shows the main differences in the design of gearboxes.
Today MultiAgro is available in three modifications for different models of Neva walk-behind tractors:
- MB-1 MultiAgro – (3+1) x2 gears, without unlocking axle shafts;
- MB-2 MultiAgro – (3+1) x2 gears, with unlocking of the right and left axle shafts;
- MB-2 MultiAgro – (4+2) x2 gears, with unlocking of the right and left axle shafts.
Before adding fuel, you must familiarize yourself with the rules for handling the gearbox. The user must navigate the price and quality of the fluid in order to cope with changing the oil in the gearbox of the Neva walk-behind tractor.
It is necessary to pay attention to the degree of viscosity of the material and special additives. The Multi Agro gearbox is filled with ZIC 10w40 gear oils of the API-SM/CF standard. You should study the technical data of Super T-3 85W-90 lubricant before pouring it into the gearbox.
Reducer MultiAgro and classic. Comparison
Based on the MultiAgro gearbox, models of Neva MB-1, MB-2 and MB-23 walk-behind tractors have been produced since 2022. Thus, the model range can be divided into 2 classes: with classic and MultiAgro gearboxes. A comparison of the main parameters is shown in the table below.
How does the MultiAgro gearbox win over a conventional gearbox:
- Increased number of gears when moving forward. This allows you to select the most suitable speed for a specific job and increase productivity.
- The gearbox is located on the steering column, while the classic version provides only direct shifting with a lever mounted directly on the gearbox itself.
- The steering wheel has a more ergonomic shape, which reduces the load on the back and arms (based on feedback from owners of multi-speed models).
- During operation, the steering column can be rotated 30 degrees to the left or right. This allows the operator to follow the machine from the side when working, avoiding the plowed strip of land.
- In models MB-2 and MB-23, both left and right wheels can be unlocked, while on motor cultivators with a conventional gearbox only the left wheel is unlocked. This feature allows the user to easily control the machine and maneuver when riding with a cart.
Reviews about the MultiAgro gearbox
Owners of Neva MultiAgro multi-speed units leave both positive and negative reviews about the operation of the gearbox.

Common breakdowns and methods for eliminating them
The Neva MB-1 walk-behind tractor often breaks down. Moreover, this is not due to poor quality of parts or assembly, but rather to improper operation of the model. In any case, you should carefully study the repair instructions for the unit in order to be able to repair it yourself if necessary.
Most often, the car requires minor repairs. This could be replacing gearbox seals or worn out clogged filters. In the first case you will need:
- remove the top engine cover;
- disconnect the valves from the gearbox;
- Using a flat screwdriver, remove the old oil seals;
- install new elements;
- connect the valves.
To replace old filters, you will need to remove the top cover of the engine and disconnect the pipes connected to the throttle valve. Then you need to remove the old air filter, clean it, or install a new part. After this, the dismantled parts are assembled in reverse order.
Often the walk-behind tractor requires more serious repairs, for example, replacing belts. In this case, you will need to dismantle several important components - the gearbox, pulley and protective covers on the engine.
Most often, problems arise when dismantling the pulley. It is attached to the motor and frame using screws hidden on the inside of the motor. Therefore, before removing the pulley, you need to study the instructions for the unit and find out where the fasteners are located. After this, you need to unscrew the screws with a Phillips screwdriver, dismantle the gearbox and disconnect the cables. After replacing the worn elements, the motor is assembled in the reverse order.
Operation and maintenance of Neva MB-1 MultiAgro walk-behind tractors
What oil and fuel is best to use?
Type of gearbox oil recommended by the manufacturer: transmission oil SAE85W-90 API GL-5 (it is allowed to use TM-5 oil (from -25 to +35) GOST 17479.2-85).
Filling volume l., 1.5. Type of engine oil: in summer it is better to use SAE 10W-30 oil, in winter - SAE 5W-30. Fuel type recommended by the manufacturer: pure gasoline AI - 92, AI - 95.
Add oil only when necessary.
It is recommended to change the oil in Briggs & Stratton engines for the first time 5 hours after the first start of the walk-behind tractor; in the future, in these engines it is recommended to change the oil every 8 hours of operation and before the change of season (spring-summer and winter-autumn).
In Honda engines, the oil is changed within the first 20 hours of operation after the first start, and then at least once every six months.
Tips for the first start-up and running-in of Neva MB1 MultiAGRO walk-behind tractors
The first start-up of the walk-behind tractor must be carried out adhering to the following rules:
- check the complete set of the walk-behind tractor;
- start the engine only when the walk-behind tractor is on a flat surface;
- check that the fuel and oil levels are sufficient;
- make sure that the threaded connections are securely fastened;
- start the engine, turning on the ignition smoothly;
- let the walk-behind tractor run idle for 5-10 minutes;
- get moving and start working.
Run-in is the period of the first 20 hours of operation of the walk-behind tractor.
During the break-in period, it is important to follow these recommendations:
- do not load the walk-behind tractor at full capacity;
- do not cultivate virgin soil with a new machine - let the equipment “go into operation”, run-in on pre-cultivated land;
- Do not equip the walk-behind tractor with additional cutters, use only the supplied ones;
- change gears only after the rotation of the main pulley has stopped;
- Change the oil after 20 hours of operation.
Gear shift
To correctly change gears on a walk-behind tractor without shortening the “life” of your walk-behind tractor, follow these simple recommendations:
- Stop the walk-behind tractor to change gears - do not remove the shift knob while the machine is moving!
- The start of movement is made by moving the engine to ½ of the maximum, then the required gear is engaged. By pressing the clutch smoothly, you will ensure that the walk-behind tractor starts moving. After this, you can gradually increase the number of engine revolutions to give the equipment the required speed.
- To change gear, release the clutch lever. Make sure that the gear pulley does not rotate, change gear. Resume driving by pressing the clutch. Make all shifts smoothly, without exerting effort or jerking the levers or handle.
Replacing drive belts
NEVA MB-1 walk-behind tractors and their modifications have a built-in front-rear V-belt drive.
To replace the belt in a walk-behind tractor, you need to know the type of belt, its length (you can simply measure it manually), and the degree of tension.
Before replacement, the casing is removed from the V-belt mechanism, and then the back bar is removed from the pulley. The key is used to loosen it, and then the spring-loaded roller is removed. Next, a new belt is tensioned, and those parts that were removed are put back and strengthened.
Belt type suitable for these types of walk-behind tractors: forward drive belt A-1213.
Carburetor adjustment
You can adjust the carburetor yourself only if you already have experience in such repair work.
To adjust you need:
- Unscrew the low and full throttle screws as much as possible;
- start and warm up the engine;
- turn the engine to the lowest speed;
- then achieve stable idle speed and set the maximum idle speed;
- then adjust the minimum engine speed at idle, alternating with the maximum. This is done until the engine starts to idle stably and without any extraneous noise or knocking.
Valve settings
Setting or adjusting the valves is done using wrenches, a screwdriver and a feeler gauge. The essence of the adjustment is to set the standard clearances between the valves, then the engine will operate properly.
To adjust, remove the engine casing, and then the valve box cover, adjust the clearances using a feeler gauge, then replace the box cover and casing.
Changing the gearbox oil of a walk-behind tractor
One of the most important maintenance points for a walk-behind tractor gearbox is timely oil change.
The manufacturer recommends using transmission oil SAE85W-90 API GL-5 for gearboxes of this model and their modifications (it is allowed to use TM-5 oil (from -25 to +35) GOST 17479.2-85). Refill volume: 1.5 l.
Replacing oil seals
The most common problem with oil seals is their leakage. If you notice that oil is leaking, it is better to replace the seals.
This is quite simple to do: you need to remove the seals, clean the shaft from any remaining oil and debris, replace the seals with new ones and install the cover in place, securing it with bolts.
Possible ignition problems
If the ignition is acting up, you probably need to reset it. To do this, remove the spark plugs, wipe the electrodes and, if necessary, clean the spark plugs from carbon deposits or replace them, then set the gap between the electrodes. Next, the spark plug is fixed in the cylinder head, and the crankshaft is rotated.
If the ignition is properly ignited, a white-blue spark will appear.
It is also recommended to check the flywheel and stator; the normal gap between these parts is 0.10 - 0.15 mm. Using a feeler gauge, this gap can be increased. If you don't have a probe, use a razor blade or a landscape sheet folded into four.
No spark
If there is no spark, the problem is most likely carbon buildup. Cleaning off carbon deposits and wiping the electrodes will help here.
If the spark plug is working properly, the spark will be produced and will have a light blue color. If there is an ignition fault, the spark will be light yellow.
Changing spark plugs
The manufacturer emphasizes that you can remove and install the spark plug on the walk-behind tractor only after the cylinder head has cooled.
If you remove the spark plug and exceed the tightening torque by more than half, you can no longer use the spark plug.
Spark plugs recommended by the manufacturer for walk-behind tractors of this model and their modifications: spark plug A11P (made in Russia) - gap 0.5÷0.6 mm. Wrench dimensions 20.8 mm; spark plug NR17С (BRISK) - gap 0.5÷0.6 mm. Wrench dimensions 20.8 mm; spark plug WR8AC (BOSСH) - gap 0.5÷0.6 mm. Wrench dimensions 20.8 mm.
Unit repair
The owner studies the structure of the walk-behind tractor and corrects faults in a timely manner. When the engine is running, ignition may occur, black smoke may come out of the muffler, and carbon deposits may form on the spark plug.
In this case, it is necessary to disassemble the air filter and clean it. If the spark is lost, the engine does not start, and the spark plug is wet, the reasons for the failure in the ignition system are determined. The owner of the walk-behind tractor cleans the electrodes, rinses and dries the parts. It is necessary to disassemble the walk-behind tractor engine, observing the following rules:
- drain the oil from the crankcase;
- install the filler plug;
- Disconnect the hose and air filter.
Next, you should dismantle the remaining parts of the engine. Before assembling the engine, parts are cleaned of dirt and components to be installed are washed. When setting up the crank mechanism, check the suitability of the oil scraper rings for operation.
Piston rings are replaced only as a set.

"Hello! About a month ago I bought a walk-behind tractor MB1-N MultiAGRO (GP200). I have a small plot, but I’ve been choosing a walk-behind tractor for a long time and still couldn’t decide. There were several criteria for selection. I wanted to buy something reliable, of course. This model suited me both in price and in the availability of spare parts. It was easy to deliver the walk-behind tractor to the site. Now I’m very happy with the purchase, it works flawlessly, now we’ll see how it behaves in winter and spring.”
Sergey - Nikolaev, Ukraine
“I was thinking about what to buy, an MK-200 or an MB-1 with a Briggs Straton engine, which has a headlight. A friend recommended MB1. In general, I bought this beast and I can say that I am satisfied with everything. I don't regret choosing him. It’s powerful, works reliably, I worked on it in the summer and went on vacation with peace of mind. He returned, continued his work without any problems, and dug up the potatoes. Now I've hidden it in the garage until winter. In winter, I plan to clear the snow from the yard on it, and at the same time I’ll check whether it’s convenient to work on it in the evening.”
Mikhail - Khmelnitsky, Ukraine
"Good day. I bought myself a MB1 B MultiAGRO (RS950). I immediately liked the way he maneuvers. It maintains its balance well and does not tip to the side. I plowed 5 acres and also mowed the grass. Of course, you can’t compare it with the previous unit, it was some kind of 90, completely old. By the way, regarding additional equipment: the mower fits perfectly, it is also adjustable in height, it mows with a bang. I recommend this walk-behind tractor to everyone, it’s good equipment!”
