"Kirovets" K-744 and its manufacturer today
Joint Stock Company "Petersburg Tractor Plant" (PTZ) is an integral part of the industrial group OJSC "Kirov Plant". This is one of the very first machine-building plants in the country (founded in 1801), the founder of our tractor manufacturing - the first tractors came out of the gates of this enterprise in 1924.
Both during the years of the Soviet Union and in modern times, the Kirovets brand is the main, well-known PTZ brand in the post-Soviet space and abroad. In July 2022, the plant celebrated the 55th anniversary of the production of the 1st serial Kirovets tractor. In total, over 480 thousand Kirov vehicles were produced over these years (of which more than 450 thousand were produced during the years of the USSR).
Petersburg Tractor Plant is the only manufacturer of energy-rich wheeled agricultural tractors in the Russian Federation. The basis of PTZ’s modern production program is the Kirovets K-744 tractor family. Currently, the company produces 8 modifications of this equipment, as part of the modernized K-744R series. The power of these tractors varies from 300 to 428 horsepower. Kirovtsy also produces 17 types of road construction and specialized machines.
Official representative offices and dealer centers of PTZ operate in more than 50 regions of the Russian Federation and the CIS. The plant traditionally takes an active part in state programs for providing agricultural producers with equipment - through the mediation of Rosagroleasing and in accordance with government decree No. 1432. The structure of the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant includes 10 main workshops, where the full production cycle is carried out, plus the necessary auxiliary structures.
The plant is better equipped than all other Russian tractor manufacturers with advanced high-tech equipment: in 2015 and 2016, more than two billion rubles were invested in technical re-equipment and modernization of production. And after the development and start of production of our own transmission of a modern system, there is a plan to build a separate new high-tech transmission production facility - an investment project with a total cost of 4 billion rubles.
PTZ is one of the few domestic enterprises that, despite all the crisis phenomena in the economy, shows an increase in the following indicators from year to year: net revenue and the number of tractors sold; number of staff and average salary; market share in percentage terms in all regions of Russia. Kirovets is the leader in the segment of wheeled tractors with power from 250 hp. in Russia and Kazakhstan. In the 2010s, deliveries of Kirovets tractors were made to countries such as Germany, France, the USA, Canada, Thailand and Australia.
"Kirovets" K-744: main development milestones
- Year 1995: Start of production of fourth generation Kirovets agricultural tractors. The first tractors, models K-734 (250 hp) and K-744 (350 hp) were manufactured only for export. They were developed in collaboration with German engineers, and their implementation in Western Europe was carried out by a German-Russian joint venture. However, domestic agriculture, which was then in deep shock in the vast majority of regions, did not have the opportunity to purchase such expensive equipment, so there was virtually no one in Russia to buy new modern Kirovets).
This is what K-744 was like in the second half of the 90s. The picture shows long-term general director of the plant Pyotr Semenenko in 1996.
- Year 2000: K-744R tractors began to be produced, intended for the domestic Russian market and the market of the former Soviet republics.
- Year 2002: the production of morally and technically outdated tractors K-700...701...703 was put to an end. On the assembly line they were replaced by K-744R tractors with three types of power units: 250, 300 and 350 hp. We are already talking about mass serial production of tractors of the 744 family.

- Year 2014: a deep modernization of the Kirovts K-744R was carried out.
- Year 2016: The new automated T5 gearbox with the Command Post control system began to be installed on the K-744R tractor. Starting from November 1, 2016, 100% of the K-744R produced at the enterprise are equipped with this new transmission.

All the subtleties of the K-700 tractor gearbox (Kirovets)
The K-700 car (Kirovets) is a wheeled tractor produced by the Kirov plant, which has increased cross-country ability. Its main purpose is deep loosening of the soil and sowing. Also, this technique can act as a tractor.
Power plant K-700, K-701
The engine power on the K-700 tractor reaches 220 horsepower. The first versions of this technique became available in the early 1960s. Excellent traction qualities of the tractor are provided by enlarged radial tires. The control drives and hydraulic system are designed for heavy loads.
Since the mid-1970s. The following versions of the Kirovets appeared: K-700A, K-701. They are equipped with the following types of engines: YaMZ 238, 240. The fuel system available on the tractor includes fine and coarse filters. The engine does not lose its performance properties when the equipment is operated in difficult conditions.
The installed four-stroke 8-cylinder engine YaMZ-238NM is fixed on the front semi-frame. The K-700 tractor is capable of reaching speeds of up to 33 km/h. The weight of different modifications of this version of the tractor varies. In particular, the mass of the vehicle is affected by the mass of the engine.
The K-701 tractor with a YaMZ-240BM2 engine produces 300 horsepower and is an excellent alternative to the powerful K-700. This technique remained in demand in agriculture for a long time. The power plant communicates with the transmission. The transmission includes a cardan gearbox, axles, and a clutch. These spare parts are reliable.
Transmission system features
Using the gearbox on the tractor, the driver can change the speed of the vehicle both forward and backward. The peculiarity of the gearbox on the tractor is that there is no clutch. The gearbox itself is mechanical, 16 speed (forward), 8 speed reverse. In this case, there is the possibility of hydraulic control. The gears present have straight teeth, this is well reflected in the diagram of this working device. Gear couplings are installed on a shaft with gears. They affect gear changes.
External view of the tractor gearbox, disassembled
Changing speed modes on this equipment occurs without delay. The gear shift mechanism performs the function of controlling the flow of incoming oil. Due to this, the fuel is directed to the spool. The gear shift mechanism housing is cast from cast iron. There are special channels here that are necessary for the direct distribution of circulating fuel flows. An auxiliary element such as the drive shaft is responsible for changing gears on the tractor.
Gear shift diagram
The crankcase includes the pedal and control levers. The gearbox has several shafts. The input shaft is driven by a metal flat disk. The intermediate and load shafts (refer to the lower part of the crankcase) are distinguished by their operating efficiency. It should be noted that the load shaft is mounted on bearings. The existing driven drums for 1st and 4th gears are equipped with special synchronizer brakes.
The fork for controlling the cargo shaft clutches is fixed on the reverse clutch. It provides quick engagement and disengagement of reverse gear.
Thus, the operation of the K-700 tractor helps to increase the productivity of agricultural work. The tractor clearance is 440 mm. This circumstance ensured good maneuverability of this technique. It should be noted that gear shifting is carried out without loss of operating power.
Basic gearbox faults
Malfunctions and breakdowns in the gearbox in most cases arise as a result of wear and tear of the components available here and individual spare parts. Signs of when a gearbox repair on a K 700 is needed:
- difficulty changing gears;
- spontaneous gear shifting;
- oil leak;
- jerks;
- knocks, noises from the side of the box.
"Kirovets" K-744: purpose and general characteristics of all modifications
Each of the K-744 tractors is a general purpose agricultural machine, all-wheel drive, built on an articulated frame. The main features of this equipment are high productivity, excellent cross-country ability and maneuverability, simplicity and reliability of design, maintainability, expanded capabilities for aggregation with both classic and advanced wide-cut complex tillage, seeding implements and machines.
Any of the K-744R tractors, as one working unit, is capable of preparing and sowing up to 5 thousand hectares of area during the season, without going beyond the correct agro-industrial deadlines. The cost of processing and sowing, calculated per hectare, is thus minimally low.
K-744R of the second half of the 2010s.
In addition to work in the fields, thanks to its serious traction and transport characteristics, the Kirovtsy K-744 is used year-round for the most difficult and energy-intensive transport work. This includes clearing snow, towing equipment stuck in mud or deep snow, etc.
Transmission: automated gearbox T5, 16 forward gears and 8 reverse gears, four-mode, with hydraulic power gear shifting and pneumatic mode switching. Leverless control system “Commandpost”: selection of the operating range and gear is carried out using a joystick-shifter and several buttons; There is a program to protect against operator errors. Previously, the K-744 used the classic K-700 transmission, etc. outdated tractor models.

Engine
The K-701 tractor is equipped with a 300-horsepower, four-stroke, twelve-cylinder water-cooled YaMZ-240BM engine. An original solution in the steel design: a tunnel type crankcase, roller bearings on the crankshaft, and the hydraulic coupling of the fan drive is controlled using a mechanism with a spool-type thermocouple instead of the classic thermostat on the previous engine.
The intake air is cleaned by a combined two-stage system. Coarse or primary cleaning occurs using cyclone filters, secondary through four cassette filters made of porous cardboard. The cooling system is closed-type liquid with a compensating circuit, the circulation of liquid in the system is forced. The tractor is initially equipped with pre-heating to facilitate engine starting at low temperatures. The electric engine start system ensures that it starts without heating at temperatures down to -10 degrees. If the temperature is lower, use a preheating system.
Transmission
The gearbox was unified with the 700 model tractor. A distinctive feature of this gearbox is the absence of a clutch. This function was performed by the oil drain pedal in the hydraulic system. The transmission itself had 16 speeds with spur gears. The box contains 4 hydraulic gears, two neutral and 4 mechanical. The first and last had a divider (high or low gear mode). The box also included 8 reverse speeds. Due to the clutches, gear shifting was carried out without loss of power. The speeds were activated by redirecting the oil flow. Why are there two neutral gears in this transmission? The first neutral slowed down the shaft with clutches and worked like a handbrake, so it was turned on only after the tractor had completely stopped. The second neutral cut off the hydraulic oil flow, allowing the engine to switch to one of four mechanical speeds.
Electrics
To start the engine, an electric starter with a power of 8 kW is provided. The starter, in turn, is powered by two batteries. For batteries, it is possible to switch between parallel and serial connections. To obtain direct current, there is a three-phase generator, supplemented by a rectifier. It powers ventilation and heating systems, internal and external lighting devices.
Chassis
The wheels on both axles of the tractor are discless, equipped with low-pressure tires and high-cross-country tread. The wheel is secured with eight nuts. The tire pressure of the K-701 tractor is selected depending on the work performed: Plowing and other agricultural activities. work Pressure in the front tires MPa (kgf/cm2) - 0.17 (1.7) Pressure in the rear tires MPa (kgf/cm2) - 0.16 (1.6) Agricultural. work with mounted implements in early spring Pressure in the front tires MPa (kgf/cm2) - 0.14 (1.4) Pressure in the rear tires MPa (kgf/cm2) - 0.11 (1.1) Transport work Pressure in the front and rear tires MPa (kgf/cm2) - 0.17 (1.7) Every month it is necessary to inspect the rims and tires, and also monitor the pressure. Carry out regular cleaning of tires to remove objects clogged in the tread. Damaged tires with defects reaching to the cord, rims with cracks should not be allowed into service. The frame is articulated and consists of two semi-frames: The front one is welded, closed profile, has box-section spars, in the upper plane of which there are six brackets for engine mounts. In comparison with the K-700 frame, the front hinge support, with brackets for fastening the rotary hydraulic cylinders, is made more rigid, and the height of the side members in the middle of the half-frame is increased. The rear one is designed similarly to the front half frame. Unlike the previous model, stops for working with a loader were additionally installed, this made it possible to reduce the angle of displacement around the horizontal hinge by half, from 16 to 8 degrees.
Review of the “deep modernization” of the K-744 in 2014
During the modernization, a number of improvements and enhancements were made in the design of the K-744R tractors. In particular, Kirovets has become quieter. Noise reduction in the operator's workplace was achieved thanks to the added layer of thermal and noise insulation on the parts of the frame and interior of the cab. As well as the use of multi-layer flooring.
The operator's workplace has become generally more convenient and ergonomic. These improvements continued with the introduction at the end of 2016 of a fundamentally new transmission control system of the “Command Post” type. New ergonomic valve control handles and an improved accelerator control handle have been introduced. To better protect the operator from the sun's rays, a new system of curtains on the windshield was introduced.
In the K-744 cockpit before modernization...
The Kirovets cabin has become cooler in the summer. The efficiency of the air conditioning system has been increased by installing a compressor with a two-strand drive.
The air cleaner was made of a new design, with a cyclone - for ease of maintenance and reliable engine operation. The new design of agricultural hitch has become an even more universal design - suitable for domestic and imported agricultural implements and devices of both categories 3 and 4. The basic configuration of the tractors was prepared for the installation of GLONASS monitoring systems, which can collect and systematize tractor operating parameters using more than 15 indicators at once.
…and after.
The attachment of the K-744R tractors was equipped with reinforced lower links and galvanized vertical and horizontal braces. We have introduced an improved control system for the EHR attachment (but this is an additional option). This is an electro-hydraulic system for positioning agricultural implements, ensuring full operation with reversible plows and other mounted and semi-mounted implements that do not have adjustable support wheels.
Another additional option is a new drawbar designed to handle particularly heavy towed implements.
The new towing device in the modernized K-744R can withstand a vertical static load of 4 tons, the diameter of the hitch pin is 51 mm.
The hydraulics of the working equipment have also been worked out in order to increase the reliability of the working equipment and the ease of its operation. The flows from the hydraulic tank that feed the steering and work equipment pumps were separated. We added a kit for combining sections of the hydraulic distributor to the spare parts kit. It is designed to connect the hydraulic motor of a large seeding complex, requiring a flow of up to 140 liters per minute. The hydraulic system as a whole has fewer parts and connections, a new multi-grade oil has been introduced - reliability and performance have increased when working in severe frosts.
The power take-off mechanism, offered as additional equipment, began to be equipped with replaceable power take-off shafts and a soft start throttle.
Electrical equipment has become well suited to connect to both 24-volt and 12-volt electrical systems found on trailed work equipment. To eliminate peak voltages, a voltage limiter was introduced into the tractor, and for quick and convenient connection of external equipment, 12V and 24V sockets are now installed on the rear wings of the K-744R tractor.
The K-744R has become both more accurate and easier to control. An improved steering system with an NSh-80 hydraulic pump, a metering pump and a Danfoss flow amplifier has increased the reliability of tractor control at low engine speeds and helped reduce noise in the cabin.
The K-744R has generally become more convenient to maintain. In particular, the tractor is equipped with a spacious box in which it is easy and convenient to place tools and consumables, technical fluids and parts of agricultural implements. An informative “Lubrication Chart” was placed on the surface of this box for quickly carrying out scheduled maintenance.
Filling with oil in the modernized K-744R takes less time, since the oil filler neck has been moved to a more convenient and suitable location. The interval for purging radiators has been increased, and this procedure itself has become more convenient. The radiator block area is now protected from chaff and small debris by a protective panel. All radiator blocks are made with folding sections, each of which can be easily and quickly accessed.
Inflating wheels or blowing out filter elements in the field has now become quite easy. An additional connection port was installed in the Kirovets pneumatic system, and the tractor was supplemented with a set of devices for pumping and purging.
After modernization, valve adjustment on engines of the Tutaevsky Motor Plant has become easier and faster. The new design of the hood arch makes it possible to reduce a number of labor-intensive tractor maintenance operations. The cardan transmission was equipped with a quick-release driveshaft between the half-frames. Due to this, when replacing the driveshaft, the need to uncouple the semi-frames is eliminated, and the repair time is reduced significantly.
We increased the reliability of the promotional pore due to the use of closed-type bearings 6218ZZC3. There is no need for forced lubrication of bearings. Simplified maintenance of the rear axle. For better protection from dirt and convenient control, the rear axle breather was moved higher and located behind the fuel tank.
Prices for routine maintenance were fixed at the level recommended by PTZ price list. Intervals for routine maintenance have been increased to 250 engine hours. And the warranty period for all tractors of the K-744R family was increased to 2 years, or 3 thousand engine hours.
Finally, the appearance of the tractor has also been slightly changed, with plastic fenders and a new plastic roof design. These elements began to be made from more modern and durable plastic, which also better preserved the brightness and richness of color.

K-744R2: technical characteristics
In the first modification “Standard”, the K-744R2 tractor is equipped with a V-shaped 8-cylinder turbocharged engine TMZ-8481.10 from the Tutaevsky Motor Plant, with a displacement of 17.24 liters and a power of 350 horsepower. The rated speed is 1900 rpm. Maximum torque – 1570 N.m. Rotation speed at maximum torque – 1300…1500 rpm.
TMZ-8481.10
In the second “Premium” modification, K-744R2 tractors are equipped with 6-cylinder Mercedes OM460LA E3A/5 , which are used on many heavy trucks in the world. This is a 12.8-liter power unit with 354 hp. The rated speed is 1800 rpm. Maximum torque – 1750 N.m. Rotation speed at maximum torque is 1300 rpm. Specific fuel consumption – 151 g/hp.h (205 g/kWh).
In addition to more powerful diesel engines, it differs from the K-744R1 in larger tires (800/65 R32) and greater operating weight (14.79 tons with a Mercedes engine and 15.25 tons with a TMZ engine).
Kirovets engine
The K-701 tractor uses an extremely reliable, durable and very productive YaMZ-240 engine.
It has the following operational parameters:
- type of fuel used – diesel;
- maximum combustion chamber volume, cm3 – 22,299;
- maximum possible power, l. With. – 360;
- valve mechanism type – OHV;
- piston stroke length, mm – 140;
- cylinder diameter, mm – 130;
- total number of valves, pcs. – 24;
- total number of cylinders, pcs. - 12.
The cylinders in this type of engine are arranged in a V-shape. This is what accounts for its extreme compactness.
Cast iron was used as the main material for the manufacture of the cylinder block.
The main cylinder block is made of the same material.
The number of working cycles is four. Fuel is supplied to the intake system under high pressure using specialized pumps. They are assembled at the fuel equipment plant in the city of Yaroslavl.
The overall dimensions of the motor are as follows:
- length, mm – 1,859;
- width, mm – 1,098;
- height, mm – 1,190.
The total weight of the engine, which completely lacks refueling tanks, is only 1,790 kg. Considering its performance and power, this parameter is very small.
A starter 25.3708-01 is used as a starting device. Before entering the fuel system, fuel passes through two filters - fine and coarse.
Partly due to this, the engine resource is very long, because the quality of the diesel engine directly affects the performance of the power unit and the duration of service intervals.

Development history
The machine in question was produced at LTZ (Leningrad Tractor Plant) in 1972.
The need for this type of equipment appeared back in the 60s, but at that time agricultural workers were content with only the DT-75 and DT-54.
The K-701 model simply amazed with its performance.
This tractor could alone process as many as two hectares of virgin soil in just one hour , regardless of the type of soil, and at the same time consume a relatively small amount of fuel.
Thus, the use of “Kirovets” managed to solve two problems simultaneously:
- reduce fuel costs;
- significantly increase agricultural productivity.
Also, “Kirovtsi” were often used as tractors.
The performance parameters of the Kirovets are truly impressive, especially considering the years of its development. Main technical characteristics of K-701:
- an engine of the YaMZ-240BM2 type is used;
- weight, t – 13,750;
- specific consumption, g/kWh – 272;
- filling volume of the fuel tank, l – 450.
Dimensions:
- length, mm – 6,400;
- width, mm – 2,900;
- height, mm – 3,685.
We have examined the main differences between Kubota tractors and similar equipment. In this review you will learn the technical characteristics of the MTZ-50.
The ground clearance (between the bottom point of the bridge and the road surface) is as much as 430 mm, and the distance between the wheels is 2,115 mm.
Low fuel consumption is a merit of the designers, making the technical characteristics of the K-701 even better.
When designing the engine used in this tractor, innovative ideas were used that were significantly ahead of their time. Considering the power and excellent performance, the consumption can be defined as very low.
Cabin of tractor K-744
On St. Petersburg energy-rich tractors, a two-seater cabin is installed, with a built-in safety cage, with improved thermal, vibration and noise insulation; equipped as standard with powerful air conditioning and heating systems.
Instead of a flat composite windshield, the K-744R is equipped with a one-piece panoramic glass. Radial roundings on the sides of this glass provide a wide field of view from the operator’s workplace. The rear window also has radius sides, and the side pillars do not limit the view at all. The side glass and cabin door in the K-744R cabin have become virtually completely transparent, equipped with convenient windows for ventilation. However, the increased area of the cabin glazing is combined with an increase in the strength structure of its frame - by 20%, compared to the previous K-744, from the fourth generation of Kirov aircraft.
The interior of the cabin of the main PTZ model has been significantly transformed. A completely new steering column changed the perception of space and significantly improved ergonomics in terms of ease of operating the tractor and monitoring its parameters.
Additional equipment. Ability to work on crawler tracks
The following are also offered as additional equipment for the Kirovets K-744R tractors:
- Kit for doubling wheels (4 drum spacers with a kit for fastening the drum to the axle carrier and fastening additional wheels, 4 wheels).
- Protection kit for raising fallow lands (special protection of the bumper, hood and headlights of the tractor from mechanical influences)
- Bulldozer blade (hydraulic, with a skewing system, using the standard hydraulics of the K-744R tractor. The blade width is 3.4 m, the rotation angle is 30 degrees, the blade skew is 12 degrees.
- Kit for replacing wheels on crawler tracks.
The Kirovets K-744R tractors were successfully tested in field conditions when operating on tracked propulsion systems. This innovative version of the Kirovets provides extremely low ground pressure, while maintaining maneuverability, compactness and maneuverability. Less soil compaction means higher yields in the end. And greater traction and grip, with an engine of the same power, means quite significant savings in diesel fuel. At the same time, the process of replacing wheels with tracked movers is not something “super complex” and is done quite quickly.
