UAZ Cargo, equipped with a cargo platform and which appeared as a modernization of the UAZ passenger car, can be traced back to 1996. At that time it was only a test model. The next attempt to create a truck based on a passenger car was the UAZ-23608, presented as part of the MIMS-2002, 2003 show.
The target audience of the new car was supposed to be UAZ-3303 owners who wanted to replace the not very convenient outdated design, released in 1960, with a comfortable modern car. However, the high price has become an obstacle to gaining popularity among a wide range of buyers.
In 2008, based on the UAZ Patriot, the manufacturer released a model of the commercial light cargo truck Cargo, which was first updated in 2014. And today information has appeared that a new serious modernization of the UAZ Cargo 2022 is being prepared for release, which will be separated into a separate family next year.
So, the manufacturer promises to please car enthusiasts with an updated pickup truck, which is a commercial version of the Ulyanovsk Auto Plant Pickup Truck. In accordance with the wishes of consumers, the car will receive increased carrying capacity. It is possible that the car will undergo other transformations - this decision will be made by the developers only after a detailed study of market demand.
Vehicle interior
No specific information about the interior of the Cargo 2022 has yet been received, however, based on the previous update, we can conclude that the new product will receive an updated original interior.
The previous version was equipped with SsangYoung seats, but it is too early to say that they will remain in the 2022 model. Pickup truck exterior
Thanks to reliable sources, we have information that the front part of the car will be significantly improved with the help of a new unpainted bumper, which will be integral with the radiator grille and new lighting equipment. At the same time, the front panel of the updated car will cost significantly less, due to the fact that the front of the new UAZ Cargo 2022 is almost completely identical to the Patriot model. Such an idea is not without meaning, because the appearance of the Patriot is quite suitable for the model, and besides, due to savings, you can spend more on internal components that relate to interior design and technical features. However, we don’t yet know what awaits us on the sides and on the back panel; perhaps the developers will surprise us with something there.
Technical characteristics of the UAZ Cargo car
The list of equipment of the updated model has increased significantly in comparison with the previous modification; The range of power units assembled at the Zavolzhsky plant will also be expanded.
Today, engines with improved characteristics are being developed for jeeps of the Ural Automobile Plant, equipped with German INA hydraulic tensioners, which is a forced decision, the reason for which is the frequent breakage of the chain on cars of the previous modification of the UAZ Patriot. During testing, it was revealed that the chain breaks due to the low quality of the hydraulic tensioners.
So, the domestic manufacturer decided to replace the supplier. Due to the fact that the German-made hydraulic tensioner is smaller in size than the previous one, it was possible to develop an adapter that preserves the design of the basic elements of the power unit.
The new model is designed for a load capacity of 1500 kg; this multi-wheel drive modification will be equipped with a cabin with three seats, an original rear axle and an extended wheelbase. During the Comtran-2015 insert, it was mentioned that the side members of the car frame will be original - that is, the extension will be carried out without the use of a welded insert.
It should also be noted that under the hood of the new Cargo there is a 2.7 liter petrol power unit. The engine can generate up to 128 hp. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, providing the ability to easily reach a speed of 135 km/h.
Of course, for the model UAZ Cargo, due to the increased carrying capacity, a power unit of increased power will be installed, but its characteristics are not known today.
Based on the operating experience of today's Cargo, it can be argued that new pickups do not have any noteworthy maintenance problems. Pickup truck design
Body restyling in 2014 made this car quite recognizable. It is known that the new pickup truck will have an extended wheelbase and a 3-seater cab. The headlights have changed slightly; now their shape is emphasized by an LED strip, and the updated radiator grille with transverse plastic stripes fits in seamlessly. To reduce the cost of car production, the designers decided to make a one-piece, unpainted bumper that merges with the optics and false radiator grille. This bumper turned out to be cheaper than that of the same UAZ Patriot.

In accordance with a special order of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Uralvagonzavod equipped the UAZ Cargo with a 120-mm mortar, model 2B11. Experts believe that if there was at least a little free space in the cabin, the interior of the UAZ Cargo could be rated “excellent”. It is impossible to put anything in the pickup cab; even a small bag will only have to be placed under the passengers’ feet.
Recently information appeared that the manufacturer plans to produce a three-seater cabin; all fans of this model hope that the designers will take into account the shortcomings of the old interior and add some free space in the cabin.

While the exact release date of the updated version of the UAZ Cargo is not known, the line of vehicle trim levels also remains a mystery. The development of the UAZ Cargo 2022 commercial pickup truck was carried out on the basis of the popular and well-known UAZ Patriot in our country, which fully characterizes the new product. The then deputy director of UAZ, Alexey Volodin (from November to December 2016, he headed the Automotive Industry Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that such a Cargo would receive a reinforced frame with an extended wheelbase and would be produced not only in the 4x4 version, but also with exclusively rear-wheel drive .
Production is scheduled to begin in April. Moreover, this information was accidentally leaked at the end of December by the Motor newspaper, a corporate publication of the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant (it, like UAZ, is part of the Sollers holding). ZMZ is launching production of a new rear axle and steering knuckles for the semi, which the newspaper reported.
Simultaneously with the launch of this modification, UAZ will introduce the original front end on all Cargos. It differs from the current one in a larger radiator grille, a different bumper and simplified headlights - they will be smaller in area than the Patriot ones and lack LED daytime running lights.
Restyling has two goals: firstly, it will distance the utilitarian model from the Patriot line of SUVs, and secondly, it will reduce the cost of the cabin, because the bumper and grille will not even be painted.
Another interesting feature of the modernized truck will be the possibility of a three-seat cab layout. When ordering this option, the Cargo will be equipped with a double passenger seat and a new central tunnel casing, in which the footrests for the central passenger are molded, and the gearshift lever is moved towards the driver. The new casing was patented about a month ago, and its images can be found in the Rospatent database.
The updated Cargo will be equipped with a modernized version of the ZMZ-409 2.7-liter gasoline engine. By changing the valve timing, increasing the compression ratio and using new pistons, it will develop a little more than the current 135 hp. Currently, ZMZ is conducting bench tests of the improved engine.
A diesel engine will also appear, and it will be foreign-made - it will be used not only on Cargo, but also in the Patriot line.
Let us recall that during last year’s modernization, UAZ excluded the ZMZ-514 diesel from the Patriot family range, since it was in very limited demand and did not meet Euro-5 environmental standards. However, in October, the head of the Sollers holding, Vadim Shvetsov, promised that within a year a new diesel unit would appear, and a “purchased” one.
According to unofficial information, in 2015-2016. UAZ was negotiating with the Indian company Mahindra and the Chinese concern BAIC regarding the use of their diesel units on their SUVs.
The Indians offered UAZ the mHawk EV engine, which has a displacement of 2.2 liters and develops 120 hp. and 290 Nm of torque. At home, it is installed on the Mahindra Scorpio SUV, which is very similar to the Patriot in terms of weight and size.
From the Chinese portfolio, UAZ looked at the Yuchai YC4Y engine, which has a displacement of 2.2 liters and three power options: 122, 136 or 150 hp. (torque - 280, 300 and 360 Nm, respectively). In the Middle Kingdom, this engine is installed on a large number of cars of different classes - SUVs, pickups and light commercial vehicles.
To date, there is no reliable information about which supplier UAZ chose. According to some reports, Ulyanovsk residents preferred the Chinese option. Firstly, it has a better price-quality ratio, and secondly, UAZ has long established close business relations with the BAIC company.
