Multi-axle variants of the new generation DAF CF and XF trucks

Home Brands DAF DAF CF 85

The Dutch company DAF creates various types of trucks, among them medium-duty vehicles with the CF index, in particular the CF85 model will be disassembled today. Production of this series of trucks was launched back in 2000, and it underwent major changes only in 2013, receiving a new appearance, an updated power unit, an interior that meets modern requirements and, most importantly, began to meet Euro-6 standards. Without meeting these standards, the truck would not be able to be sold in the markets of Europe and America.

Many Russian specialists in the trucking industry are familiar with the DAF CF 85 as a car called “Perspective”. Over all this time, the Dutchman has proven himself to be excellent both in domestic transportation and transportation outside the country. The machine can cope with different tasks: movement in urban environments, transport of goods along highways and off-road. The dump truck performs well on construction sites. Depending on the intended use of the truck, you can choose the type of body and cab type, as well as equip the vehicle with special equipment.

Modifications

Tipper versions are most often used when transporting construction waste and materials, sand, soil and agricultural products. DAF CF 85 truck tractors are also popular; they are also called main tractors. Such modifications operate as part of road trains and transport mainly industrial facilities, cargo, and food products. Often on the chassis you can find a tank truck, a crane or a multi-level platform for transporting cars.

Moreover, the Dutch have developed special modifications that successfully take part in both rally and circuit racing.

The chassis has a wide range of modifications:

  • 4x2 wheel arrangement with a maximum weight of 18 tons;
  • 6x2 with a maximum weight of 25 tons;
  • 6x2 with a maximum weight of 26 tons;
  • 8x4 with a maximum weight of 32 tons.

Chassis for truck tractors:

  • 4x2, max weight 18 tons, as part of a road train - 40 tons;
  • 6x2, max weight 23 tons, road train - 40 tons;
  • 6x2, max weight 26 tons, road train - 44 tons;
  • The wheelbase, depending on the version, varies from 3.8 meters to 7.1 meters.

Brakes

To increase safety, the truck is equipped with an improved braking system. At the front there are reliable disc mechanisms with a pneumatic brake chamber and a spring brake cylinder.

To ensure that the system always works properly, the brake caliper is equipped with a wear sensor. As a result of damage or critical wear of the brake pad, the system will immediately notify the driver of the need to replace the elements.

All parts of the brake system, from compression springs, brake calipers, bushings to the cover, are always available in service centers. Therefore, owners do not have problems with servicing various units of the truck.

DAF CF 85 design

The design of the Dutch truck is not very impressive, but should this be the strong point of special equipment? They value reliability, comfort and technical characteristics. Features include a completely cabover cab and side cab windows, which consist of two parts. However, the glass is lowered only on one of the parts. Few people have any idea why it works this way. But this is due to the fact that the area of the second part of the glass is so large that it does not fit into the door.

There are huge rectangular lights at the corners at the bottom, and round fog lights at the very bottom of the bumper. Horizontally oriented plastic radiator grille covers extend across the entire front part of the DAF CF 85.

Special modifications designed for work in difficult conditions are equipped with tandem axles, also have a wheel gearbox and an 8-link suspension. Additionally, the truck is equipped with steel protection for all technical components. Construction versions have different modifications from other versions. It is made of sheet steel.

Breakthrough technologies

And now I want to talk about a car that was not presented for a test drive in Spain. DAF has developed a separate lightweight chassis for mounting the concrete mixer. The CF FAD 8x4 chassis will be supplied with a 19 tonne rear bogie consisting of two axles and one reduction gear (SR1132T) and two 7.1 tonne front axles. Thanks to optimized steering and suspension systems, a disc brake system and a new compact EAS unit with vertical exhaust pipe, the lightweight chassis has a tare weight of just 9,150 kg. The lightweight chassis for the concrete mixer is equipped with a PACCAR MX-11 engine with a power of 270–330 kW (370–450 hp). Production of such a machine begins in November, i.e. any day now.

And now a few words about the mentioned compact EAS unit (exhaust aftertreatment unit). It is now lighter by 50 kg and can be installed as a single unit between the first and second front axles (model FAD 8x4). The result is additional space that can be used, for example, to install outriggers, tool boxes or additional fuel tanks.

DAF designers made a breakthrough by developing the TINCAN safety system. In the event of an accident, the driver and passengers must be provided with so-called living space. According to European standards, its minimum is 20 cm, DAF developers increased it to 40 cm and this is how. The front part of the cabin is fixed to a bracket, as well as through a special fastening to an additional hinge. When the cabin hits a sudden obstacle, the bracket is destroyed and the cabin begins to move backward. A special mount, shock-absorbing, allows the cabin to move 20 cm and then locks on an additional hinge. As a result, the main load falls not on the cab, but on the car's bumper. Very simple and ingenious.

Another innovation that the developers focus on is a battery charging monitoring system. This is an option and is available exclusively to order. The system uses a sensor developed by DAF to accurately measure the battery's state of charge. It can also take into account environmental conditions, thereby ensuring that the vehicle is ready for operation, and forewarned means protected.

Salon CF85

The model differs from its sister line of XF tractors in the design of the cabin, where the CF is slightly inferior to its older brother in size. Dutch representatives offer three cab options for the truck: “space”, “standard highway” and “day version”. When purchasing a “space”, the driver will receive a two-meter height in the cabin and a completely different “luxury” comfort. Depending on the desires of the driver and the operating conditions of the tractor, you can purchase a cab version, both equipped with sleeping places and without sleeping places.

The salon is spacious, highly ergonomic and attractive in design.

The first thing that will please the driver in the DAF CF 85 interior is the finishing materials and choice of colors. The driver has a view of the 4-spoke steering wheel, which will delight you with an abundance of buttons and tilt adjustment. The central torpedo is divided into two parts, the first of which looks straight, the second is turned towards the driver. The main control units for vehicle functions, including climate control and audio system, are concentrated on it. Several levers fit here as well.

The first part of the center console also has a row of buttons and a large number of air deflectors. Just below there is a huge niche for paper and two cup holders. One cannot but rejoice at the driver's seat of the correct anatomical shape with a wide range of adjustments and the presence of pneumatics.

In the upper part of the DAF CF 85 cabin, closed niches for cargo are available; behind the seats there can be a berth.

Excellent ergonomics were mentioned. From the driver's seat you can reach any control within arm's length, which is very convenient on long trips.

Malfunctions

No significant faults were found in the new generation of the model. However, previous versions still have several disadvantages.

The first weak point is the engine. The problem is that, despite their durability, many parts are not designed for high mileage. For example, the manufacturer specifies the period for regular maintenance of units of the MX line with an interval of 35,000 km. But the majority of owners do not even think about bringing their trucks to service centers, but continue to operate the vehicles. As a result, the service life of engines drops significantly and quite often you have to pay attention to the camshaft.

In rare cases, problems arise in the operation of the center differential. True, malfunctions appear only due to improper use of the lock.

Also, many CF65 drivers find problems with the air system and electronics. The last criterion is typical for only 10% of all calls to service centers. The malfunction manifests itself as constant errors on the panel. Therefore, to prevent such problems, a complete diagnosis of the vehicle should be carried out in a timely manner.

Specifications

The DAF SF85 tractor has excellent speed performance. For example, the version with a maximum speed limiter accelerates to 85 km/h, and the version without this limiter is even capable of traveling at a speed of 100 km/h, which is a good indicator.

At the same time, the truck has a moderate appetite - 18-25 liters of fuel per 100 km. Power plants, due to its affiliation with PACCAR, is equipped with American power plants. These are 6-cylinder turbocharged engines that comply with environmental classes from Euro-3 to Euro-6. The first option is supplied to Russia.

The first DAF CF 85 power unit has the following characteristics:

  • volume – 6.7 liters;
  • power – 250 hp;
  • thrust - 1100 Nm.

Second power plant:

  • volume – 9.2 liters;
  • power – 300 hp;
  • peak thrust – 1450 Nm.

Third power plant option:

  • volume – 12.9 liters;
  • available in different powers - 360-510 hp;
  • peak thrust - 1775 - 2500 Nm.

The truck is supplied to Russia with a 16-speed manual transmission from ZF.

Design features

DAF dump trucks stand out from others due to their wide model range, which includes machines from 2 to 5 axles with different cabs. They can be used both within one enterprise/construction site and for regional transportation.

Also interesting are the engines produced by the world leader PACCAR. These power units are distinguished by increased requirements for efficiency, reliability, and life expectancy. As a result, these engines deliver superior performance and meet Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards.

The chassis of the vehicles is created flat so that any type of body can be easily installed, from a tank to a dump truck. Also, all components are selected in such a way as to ensure maximum strength with minimal weight of the entire structure and equipment. As a result, the permissible load capacity can be used as efficiently as possible.

Price

For an official representative, the price starts at 5.2 million rubles. On the secondary market, five-year versions are sold for around 3,000,000 rubles, depending on the modification and additional equipment.

The DAF CF 85 is a real hard worker that will be useful in any field of activity where such vehicles are needed. It is one of the best in its class, characterized by high reliability and comfort. The service interval for the power unit is 150,000 km, which is an undeniable advantage.

Chassis

Multifunctional chassis for multifunctional vehicles

The reliable CF chassis, made of high-quality steel, is characterized by exceptional strength and low weight, which allows for increased payload. The top surface of the chassis is completely flat, making it an excellent base for any superstructure. To make the work of body builders as easy as possible, the supporting elements of the main frame are equipped with special holes for attaching the body. It is possible to install a Body Builder Module (BBM), which is designed to ensure the joint operation of the electrical systems of the body and vehicle.

Sleek chassis design

The shape, layout and arrangement of chassis components are designed to keep vehicle weight as low as possible and usable space as large as possible. Many components, such as compressed air tanks and other braking components, are mounted inside the chassis frame, leaving more space for installing crane supports, twist locks, hydraulic fluid reservoirs, tool boxes and other additional equipment. Since the SCR afterburning system, including the AdBlue tank, is small, there is plenty of space available for installing large fuel tanks with a capacity of up to 1,500 liters on a 4x2 tractor.
