About the history of the GAZ-322132 model
It rolled off the Gorky Automotive assembly line from August 1996 to February 2010. In conditions of total economic changes and upheavals, the inexpensive, unpretentious, quickly paying for itself and starting to make a profit, the Gazelle turned out to be exactly the car that the domestic carrier needed. It is with this model that the very concept of “minibus” is firmly associated in our country. Yes, there were minibus taxis based on RAFs in the Soviet Union, but there were negligible numbers of them compared to the ubiquitous Gazelles.
By the way, the author of this car name, which has become extremely popular and even a common noun in the Russian language, is known. This is Vladimir Nikitovich Nosakov, during the creation of the Gazelle, he was the deputy chief designer of GAZ OJSC. According to him, he proposed this name to the then general director of the Gorky Automobile Plant, Nikolai Andreevich Pugin, when there were only two weeks left before the launch of the new car into mass production, and he agreed without hesitation.
The GAZ-322132 car is designed in the form of a minibus with a wide sliding compartment door. The basis for the creation of this model was a modification of the GAZ-32213 minibus. The GAZ-322132 model differs from its predecessor in its hinged trunk doors, the presence of a comfortable footrest, a slightly higher ceiling, a sunroof in the passenger compartment and sliding windows that improve ventilation, in the same place.
Pre-styling GAZ-322132, produced in 2002. Corrosion is the scourge of the body of all Gazelles.
In 2003, the GAZ-322132 minibus, like the entire Gazelle family, underwent a major restyling. In accordance with current modern trends in the automotive industry, the design of the tail was adjusted, and the outdated rectangular headlights were replaced with modern block headlights with a streamlined teardrop shape. The cabin interior and, above all, the instrument panel in the cabin have also been radically updated.
The well-known initiative of the authorities dates back to 2005 to make all minibus taxis yellow and issue them license plates not white, but yellow (previously, until 2002, yellow license plates were issued to foreigners and stateless persons). And, although things did not come to enshrining these standards in legislation (with the exception of some regions), the line of GAZ-322132 minibuses was replenished with a special version with a “golden orange” color.
This yellow color, which undoubtedly looks good on the Gazelle, eventually became more popular than the traditional white. In the same year, specialists from the Gorky Automobile Plant made improvements to the GAZ-322132 heating anti-lock braking system. This was the “golden time” of this model and minibuses in general.
Since February 2010, the GAZ-322132 model has been discontinued. It was replaced on the GAZ assembly line by the outwardly the same, but internally significantly improved GAZelle-Business model. “The same” version of the minibus with a sliding compartment door now bears the factory names “GAZ-3221-744” (with a UMZ-A274 Evotech injection engine) and “GAZ-3221-344” (with a Cummins diesel engine).
"GAZ-322132": features and scope of application
"GAZ-322132" represents the "H1" ("M1") class on the market - refers to cars with a maximum permissible weight of no more than 3500 kilograms. Since the model is intended for passenger transportation, the GAZ-322132 can be driven only if you have a license with an open category “D” (for regular Gazelles, a passenger category “B” is sufficient).
However, the Gazelle minibus has the same dynamics and maneuverability of a passenger car, which has been convincingly proven more than once by minibus drivers who have become aces during their many-hour shifts behind the steering wheel.
Without a doubt, the GAZ-322132 minibus is a purely urban and suburban transport. Using it for intercity transportation is quite problematic: softness and comfort are not enough. Although some owners decided to do this, with appropriate modifications to the passenger compartment and the installation of seats in it corresponding to the intercity status.
By the way, during the formation of “Gazelle” minibuses as a super popular class of urban transport, many of their owners were sophisticated in transforming the passenger compartment, sometimes reaching the point of absurdity in an effort to “shove” the maximum possible number of “passenger seats” into it. Over time, this “game of Tetris” with seats was stopped with punitive measures: “GAZ-322132” is a maximum of 13-seater minibus, and in no case more than that!
One of two approved options for the correct arrangement of passenger seats in the GAZ-322132.
The design of the minibus involved the installation of gas equipment, and private carriers who knew how to count money and optimize their business quickly switched from gasoline to liquefied gas.
Like the donor car, the GAZ-322132 minibus received a right sliding door with an opening of 1010x1220 mm, as well as rear evacuation hinged doors with an opening of 1560x1395 mm, opening 180 degrees. For all GAZ-322132, the Gorky Automobile Plant provided a guarantee of one hundred thousand kilometers or two years of machine operation. Of course, this guarantee had a number of reservations, but we must pay tribute to the Gazelles: under conditions of such intensive use, which not every car can withstand, they showed themselves to be extremely “tenacious”.
Several modification options for the GAZ-322132 minibus were produced:
- “GAZ-322132-404” – with a gasoline injection engine “ZMZ-40524” or “UMZ-4216”;
- “GAZ-322132-408” – with a gasoline injection engine “ZMZ-40524” or “UMZ-4216” and with power steering;
- “GAZ-322132-531” - with a diesel engine “GAZ-5902” (unsuccessful project, soon closed. Few such cars were produced);
- "GAZ-322132-718" - with a Chrysler 2.4L-DOHC gasoline engine (such cars were also not widespread).
Minibuses with a high roof, in the passenger compartment of which you can stand upright, have different factory designations: “GAZ-322133-748” and “GAZ-322133-7408”
Category C license for Gazelle
However, a situation may arise in which a category B or D license may not be enough to drive this vehicle. Sometimes a category C license is required to drive this truck. In what cases?
According to current legislation, a category C license is required to drive a vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3500 kg. There are some modifications of the Gazelle, for example, the extended GAZ-33022, which has a maximum permitted weight of 3600 kg. Even if you do not fully load the car, the law still requires category C to drive.
Optimal interior layout
The minibus is designed to transport 12 people. Compared to the suburban modification, it has lost one seat, but has become more convenient in boarding and disembarking - now this process takes a matter of seconds, which is very important for working with large passenger flows. The optimized seating arrangement allows you to move around the cabin without any restrictions and also eliminates the feeling of cramping. This arrangement makes the car suitable for both public transport and for organizing official transportation or transfers.
Gas engine
The Gazelle's power unit is produced by the Ulyanovsk plant. This engine combines the best features of its predecessor with the latest technologies such as microprocessor injection control. Among its advantages are cost-effectiveness, exceptional ease of maintenance and availability of spare parts, and reliability. In addition, the engine produced by UMP can be adapted to run on methane or propane-butane, significantly reducing fuel costs.
Increased comfort
All seats are installed in the direction of travel, have an ergonomic design and are equipped with seat belts. The interior uses a lighting system with a large number of lamps and an additional powerful heater. The wide opening, step and handrails facilitate quick boarding and disembarking of passengers. All this makes the Gazelle minibus suitable for work on routes of any length and provides a high level of comfort for each passenger.
Rear drive
The rear-wheel drive car is very durable - it is able to work with heavy loads without risk to components. This transmission layout helps maintain vehicle stability and excellent handling even on slippery roads. Twin rear wheels make the minibus easy to maintain on the road and allow you to maintain stable traction with the road surface.
Minibus taxis have become a familiar part of the reality around us. Compact, maneuverable and economical, they optimize the operation of the city's transport system and make travel convenient for passengers. You can verify this by evaluating the advantages of the passenger Gazelle.

Reviews from GAZ-322132 owners
Among the positive qualities of the most popular bus in the Russian Federation, they note its excellent handling and maneuverability. Although the GAZ-322132 has impressive dimensions, in all other respects the dynamics and maneuverability of an ordinary passenger car are manifested. The seating position is high, the visibility is excellent. A small exception is reversing maneuvers when leaving cramped or dark courtyards - eye and practice help here. The lack of power steering on older minibuses is not much of a hindrance, you just have to get used to it a little.
For the repair of these machines. They are most often in use for most of the day, and therefore require increased attention and care. “Little things”, the GAZ-322132 minibus, which operates at an intensive pace, is constantly in need of repair or maintenance. But the good news is that both spare parts and consumables, and the repair itself cost pennies, compared to Western “classmates”.
The gearbox is described as “frankly weak.” Approximately once a year you have to change the bearings, but already 2-3 times this operation can be performed independently and alone, without spending significant time on it. In general, every owner of a GAZ-322132, over time, and quite soon, turns into a qualified car mechanic: “Over 4 years of operation, I dismantled everything except the rear axle and steering column.”
The suspension of "Gazelle" minibuses is both praised and criticized. They praise it for its exceptional strength, energy intensity, and impressive power reserve. It is simply ideal for “imperfect” and simply broken roads, as well as for periodic overloading of the car. They criticize us for the harshness and noise in the minibus interior when it is unloaded.
One of the many comic caricatures of minibuses.
The quality of the metal from which the Gazelle body is made is disgusting. “Blooms”, rusts, starting from the bottom, quickly and progressing. Including through and through. Although, of course, any, even a low-skilled, tinsmith is able to cut off a rusty area and bend a replacement for it from a flat sheet of iron. In general, according to reviews from owners, the period of intensive use of the GAZ-322132 on a route, during which it usually turns into a chronic wreck, is about 5-7 years. But during this time, the car manages to pay for itself and its maintenance costs many times over.
Naturally, the GAZ-322132 does not indulge in comfort, but in general it is very, very acceptable for the everyday transportation of passengers along a certain route. And this is the main thing.
How do you drive
Thanks to the inexpensive repair of the GAZ 3221, a large assortment of all technical parts, the economical use of fuel reserves and cheap, compared to Western versions, service, the price of the GAZ 3221 does not exceed 500-700 thousand rubles. The minimum price is set for the purchase of a standard version of this car. Further, the assessment of the car depends on the availability of additional equipment and modifications of the car. These could be additional devices for interior lighting, audio-video devices, improved ventilation systems, the number of passenger seats and the class of the vehicle - business, taxi, cargo-passenger equipment.
Cost of "GAZ-322132"
There are simply a huge number of offers for the sale of GAZ-322132 minibuses on the Internet. This is undoubtedly one of the most abundant car brands on the secondary automotive market. In any region of Russia, such Gazelles will be found in a large assortment - both by year of manufacture and by technical condition.
There are practically no advertisements for the sale of pre-restyling passenger minibuses "GAZ-322132". This is understandable: considering how many years have passed since the 2003 restyling, all the juice has long been squeezed out of them, and they were sent for scrap. In addition, the terrifying quality of the Gazelles (and the entire family) produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant in the period from 1998 to 2001 has become the talk of the town. Some “remaining in service” GAZ-322132 from the early 2000s are offered for sale at almost bargain-basement prices - they ask for from 40 to 80 thousand rubles.
Newer, post-restyling GAZ-322132 from 2003-2009 are also inexpensive - they ask for, depending on the year of manufacture and technical condition, from 120 to 350 thousand rubles. Firstly, all of them have already significantly exhausted their resources. And secondly, where to work for them? Only in regional centers and from large cities is the “complete and final exodus” of “Gazelle” minibuses inevitable.
The updated analogue of the GAZ-322132, the Gazelle Business passenger bus, costs, according to the official website of the Gorky Automobile Plant, 981,000 rubles with a UMZ-A274 Evotech injection engine and 1,276,000 rubles with a Cummins diesel engine.
Although GAZ-322132 is called a Gazelle, in fact, it is more of a horse. A workhorse who works hard “from dawn to dusk.” A hardy car that requires a lot of attention, but also fully justifies itself, being the “breadwinner” of its owner and his family. It carries both cargo and people everywhere and always. It feels equally confident in tight city traffic, on the highway, and on peripheral roads (but with hard surfaces, of course).
There is no doubt that in just a few years the GAZ-322132, and the Gazelle Business too, will be completely ousted from commercial passenger transportation by more modern and comfortable cars. And they will become part of history, which will be remembered with nostalgia by many - owners, drivers, and ordinary passengers. Only Gazelle Next minibuses have a chance for a “response” move (it all depends on the pricing policy).
Prices for new and used
The cost depends on the year of manufacture, therefore, on the configuration. The sale of GAZ-322132 on Avito is active. According to this site, a used GAZelle before 2003 can be purchased at a price of up to 80 thousand rubles, newer used ones cost a maximum of 350-400 thousand rubles. GAZ-322132 on gas varies from 80 to half a million depending on those. condition, “author’s” tuning and mileage. The price of a new GAZ-322132, on average, fluctuates around a million rubles. However, finding a new GAZelle is quite difficult.
GAZ-322132 is a special car with which an entire era of minibuses is associated, since no foreign analogue was used in this capacity so massively. Unfortunately (or fortunately), this era is coming to an end. Therefore, cargo modifications of the GAZelle are more popular today.
