Engine

One of the key requirements of customers is the high cross-country ability of the GAZ-33086 “Countryman”. The technical characteristics of the vehicle are provided by a powerful and economical diesel engine of the Minsk Tractor Plant, model D 245.7. There are no other power units for the Zemlyak factory configuration.

The four-cylinder 122-horsepower engine has a volume of 4.75 liters and fully complies with Euro-4 toxicity standards. To ensure high parameters, the engine is equipped with a supercharging system with intermediate cooling of compressed air. Thanks to supercharging, the engine has a constant torque level of 417 N/m in the speed range from 1100 rpm to 2100 rpm.

Transmission

The engine is equipped only with a five-speed manual transmission and a single-plate clutch with a hydraulic drive. The all-wheel drive system is structurally identical to the 3308 off-road truck. The system consists of a transfer case, shafts and axles. The two-speed transfer case is equipped with direct and reduction gears with a gear ratio of 1.92.

The torque from the transfer case is transmitted to the axles using cardan shafts. The axle gearboxes are equipped with cam-type differentials. The axles are equipped with semi-elliptic springs and telescopic shock absorbers.

Brake system

The brake system of the domestic GAZ-3308 truck is dual-circuit, equipped with a hydraulic vacuum booster. Braking is effective, carried out on different axes. The ABS system received a pneumatic amplifier and modulator. Each channel has a brake cylinder, which greatly increases the efficiency of the system as a whole. The parking brake is mechanically driven.

Suspension

The rear and front suspensions are leaf springs, equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers. This design solution had a positive effect on the performance and made it possible to significantly increase the vehicle's cross-country ability.

It handles soft ground, wetlands and mud without any problems.

However, many motorists complain that the van's ground clearance is quite low (31.5 cm), which is why the truck can “sit” on the front axle.

Body

The van has an all-metal body and a unique double cab design, which allows the installation of various add-ons on the chassis. For example, on the basis of the GAZ-3308 "Sadko" you can build a truck for military, civil and rescue purposes. In small towns in many CIS countries, fire trucks on the GAZ-3308 chassis are quite common.

Hybrid design

Structurally, the GAZ-33086 “Countryman” is a combination of the frame and a number of components of the GAZ-3309 on-board vehicle and the all-wheel drive transmission from the all-wheel drive GAZ-3308. The cross-country ability of the new car has decreased slightly due to the reduced ground clearance and the double tires on the rear axle wheels, but it is still superior to cars with a single axle drive. But the lower ground clearance had a positive effect on the stability of the car.

The car cabin has an all-metal structure with a rectangular shape of the main elements. The engine is located in front of the cabin. One of the disadvantages of the cabin is the high height of the doors from the ground and the lack of handrails, which makes it difficult to get people in and out.

The standard cab is equipped with a driver's seat and a two-person passenger seat. Seat belts are provided for all seats. The rest of the cabin design is standard for GAZ trucks. The car's braking system retained the drum mechanisms of all wheels, but received an anti-lock braking system. The steering remains the same as the base truck and is equipped with hydraulic power steering.

The onboard version of the GAZ-33086 "Countryman" is equipped with two types of cargo platforms - all-metal and combined. The second version of the platform has metal sides and a wooden base made of boards. Both platform options allow the installation of a canvas awning.

As basic equipment, the "Countryman" is equipped with 20-inch diameter wheels, a cabin heating system, a tire inflation system and a high-capacity battery. Optionally, a power take-off system and a winch on the front frame member can be installed on the gearbox.

GAZ-33086 “Countryman” is a truck that is not afraid of any Russian roads

In 2005, the Gorky Automobile Plant developed and put into production the GAZ-33086 “Countryman” truck. This is a safe and reliable transport designed for transporting people and goods. Handles off-road terrain with ease.

The main requirement put forward by customers was that the car must be passable. Manufacturers managed to put this into practice. The diesel engine of the car is powerful, economical, with a volume of 4.75 liters, and meets the required Euro-4 toxicity standards.

The power plant operates in conjunction with a 5-speed manual transmission. The drive is all-wheel drive, completely identical to the other 3308 truck. The axle gearboxes have cam-type differentials.

Braking is quite good and can be done on different axles. The ABS system has a modulator, as well as a pneumatic amplifier. Brake cylinders are installed in the channels, making the entire system more efficient.

Thanks to this, the car has become more passable, capable of overcoming any roads - with holes, mud, soft soil. But many motorists were not satisfied with the ground clearance, because it is only 31.5 centimeters. Because of this, the truck very often “sat down” on the front axle.

Body features. The car van consists of an all-metal body. The design turned out to be truly unique; the cabin can accommodate 2 people. If desired, you can install some add-ons on the chassis. This option was readily used and quickly found its application.

Hybrid design. GAZ-33086 “Countryman” is a combination of a frame with components of the GAZ-3309 onboard structures. The new car's cross-country ability has slightly deteriorated, and all because the ground clearance has been reduced. However, this solution also has its advantage - the car has become more stable. Now movement has become safer; you don’t have to worry about skidding on the road or the car turning over.

The engine is located in front. The main drawback of the cabin is that the doors are too high from the ground, there are no handrails, so problems arose every now and then when boarding or disembarking passengers. The cabin has space for the driver, as well as seating for two passengers. Seat belts for everyone. In general, the design is standard.

There was also an onboard version, it was equipped with two different cargo platforms - the same all-metal and combined. In the second case, there is no metal side, but in each of the options a canvas awning can be installed.

The wheels have a diameter of 20 inches. The cabin is equipped with a heating system, as well as a tire inflation system. Subsequently, the car chassis began to be used as the basis for the production of firefighting vehicles. They turned out no worse, with their own unique characteristics.

Despite the fact that GAZon Next began to be produced, the GAZ-33086 “Countryman” was not removed from mass production. The car continues to be in demand. When performing any work in off-road conditions, it is indispensable. And manufacturers continue to work on improving it. Now we can say with confidence that production will definitely not be stopped in the near future. On the contrary, the number of trucks produced can only increase.

Modifications

The GAZ-33086 “Countryman” chassis with all-wheel drive has great versatility. It produces various specialized machines with single or double cabs. The most common types are flatbed trucks, dump trucks, and fire trucks.

The GAZ-33086 “Countryman” dump truck is designed for transporting various bulk industrial and agricultural cargo. The production of dump trucks under the designation GAZ-SAZ-2506 is carried out by the dump truck plant in Saransk.

The “Countryman” chassis served as the basis for firefighting vehicles ATs(L) models 2.0-40 and 3.0-40. The machines are equipped with tanks for 2000 and 3000 liters of water respectively. Both vehicles are equipped with double cabins designed to transport a crew of five people.

Despite the start of production of GAZon Next cars, Zemlyak remained on the assembly line. The car is in steady demand and is indispensable when performing work in off-road conditions.

BACK TO THE FUTURE, OR WHERE GASES GO

The proposal to test medium-tonnage GAZ vehicles, which travel in large numbers on Belarusian roads and are familiar firsthand to the driving fraternity in both the private and public sectors, initially caused some surprise in the editorial office. The Gorky Automobile Plant never shone with space technologies, and its products in most cases defeated competitors with affordable prices and simplicity, if not primitiveness, of design. But this is in general, but in detail for Nizhny Novgorod residents against the backdrop of a mass product, LAWNs and GAZelles. There have always been highlights worthy of special mention: in Soviet times - the all-wheel drive GA3-66, then the Sadko, and now, in addition to it, the Countryman has appeared. Well, in the mass segment, where at one time the GAZ-51, GAZ-52 and GAZ-53 reigned, and then the GAZ-3307 and GAZ-3309, now the Valdai is offered as an advanced single-wheel drive alternative, and with a Cummins engine. It was these cars that were to become the heroes of the test drive.

Product of evolution This is about Valdai. A spacious 6-seater cabin, a modern instrument panel by GAZ standards, comfortable seats and a smooth-running power unit from Cummins unobtrusively demonstrate Nizhny Novgorod residents’ vision of today’s medium-duty vehicle. Compared to the angular GAZ-3307-3309, the Valdai is simply a masterpiece. Being his driver is much more pleasant than the usual LAWN.

The stabilizer on the rear axle contributes to good stability of the car, and pneumatic disc brakes perfectly slow down the car when you press the brake pedal.

Comfortable driver and passenger seats. A good heating system: it’s minus 10 outside, and in the spacious one and a half cabin, despite the fact that the diesel engine only runs at idle, it’s already warm. And the winter jacket becomes an unnecessary attribute. A couple of tens of kilometers on an empty car is not at all an indicator, but they still demonstrated something. The only foreign bodies in the fashionable interior of the Valdai seem to be the gear shift lever and the door trim - they are made in a painfully primitive manner. Changing gears is convenient and easy, but the lever could be lower. Well, the fact that it goes under the front passenger seat doesn’t bother me at all.

Another “trick” of the interior of the tested Valdai is the process of access to the second row seats. You need to sit there without reclining the front passenger seat, as is usually done in passenger cars, but by moving it towards the driver. Similar to how it is done in tourist buses, fortunately the cabin is wide enough. According to the specifications, the rear cabin of the Valdai can accommodate 4 people. Can be placed - perhaps the most accurate definition. In principle, there is not much legroom there, but in terms of width it all depends on the size of the passengers. In my opinion, it is better to travel there as a group of three.

But let's return to the driver's feelings. In front of it is a fairly informative instrument panel, not replete with electronics: the usual speedometer and tachometer, air pressure indicators in the circuits of the pneumatic brake system, a temperature scale, a fuel level indicator, an odometer and a block of warning lights. It is noteworthy that there is no red zone on the tachometer scale. Taking into account the fact that there is a diesel engine under the hood, it is obviously assumed that it should be in the head of the driver, who will definitely not “turn” it up to 6000 rpm. Moreover, Cummins pulls already from 1100 rpm.

Cummins is. .. Not only an imported power unit with good traction and power characteristics and a long service life, but also the changes in the design of the car attached to it, which should obviously benefit the car. But let's start with the hero of the occasion - the Cummins ISF 3.8 engine. The tested Valdai with a similar power unit will cost 283,606,000 rubles, or about $34,170. What will the buyer receive in exchange for them, especially in comparison with a similar car equipped with a Belarusian engine, which costs 261,592,000 rubles (about 31,500 dollars). Firstly, a resource of 500,000 km, accompanied by a guarantee of 2 calendar years or 100,000 km. A car with a Belarusian engine has a much more modest warranty period.

Secondly, the service interval is one and a half times higher - 15,000 km. And if you believe the statements of the plant, this engine will need adjustment of the valve mechanism no earlier than after 240 thousand kilometers. At the same time, as follows from the technical characteristics of the car, the Valdai with Cummins promises to be 10-15% more economical, more torquey and more powerful. Thirdly, Valdai and Cummins have a lot of design changes, which for the $2,600 difference in price do not seem expensive at all. The Sachs Reliable Clutch reduces the force required to apply the clutch pedal. Anvis engine mounts reduce vibrations transmitted from the engine to the vehicle frame. The gearbox has also been modernized. It now has 2-cone synchronizers, making gear shifting easy and convenient. The power steering pump is made by ZF - comments, as they say, are unnecessary. The car also has a modernized suspension, driveline, exhaust system and some electronic equipment. I wonder how all this will manifest itself in operation? Blitz test A couple of tens of kilometers on an empty car is not at all an indicator, but they still demonstrated something. The engine runs very smoothly, without frightening others with the usual rumble of a diesel engine. Its pickup, as mentioned above, starts at 1100 rpm. While on the road, the car clearly responds to commands given from the pedal unit. There is no hesitation either when accelerating or when braking. The clutch is also very good.

Ice on the asphalt, an empty body and drive to the rear axle very soon give the ABS the opportunity to show its talents. Not dead in its tracks, but the truck stops when you press the brake pedal hard. Disc brakes on all wheels in combination with a pneumatic drive work quite well. And now there is a desire to accelerate and drive a couple of turns faster. The machine clearly allows this, I would even say provokes it. But in the next seat is a representative of Belgazavtoservice, and something in his facial expressions suggests that he should somehow be calmer, or something.

While driving, sometimes it seems that Valdai is not GAZ at all. But the gear shift lever mockingly reminds: GAZ, GAZ... Nevertheless, it switches gears quite regularly, both up and down. The latter is very important on a winter road. Valdai with Cummins is generally good. But there is still room for improvement in the little things. This is evidenced by the rust on the body, and not the smallest gaps in the cabin, and the still “flimsy” fastening of the battery compartment, and this rocker... Compared to the classic medium-tonnage bonnet GAZ, the Valdai with Cummins certainly looks like a product of evolution. At the same time, like its fellow brands, Valdai is more affordable than foreign cars. With an imported power unit and the attached Sachs clutch, ZF power steering, and Anvis airbags, it is unlikely to be problematic in operation. But in small things, I really want that after several years of operation the hood does not rot, the battery mounts do not break off, and the electrical wiring does not fail. Then, perhaps, the attitude towards the brand will change, the calling card of which is still price and ease of operation, coupled with the availability of a mass of service stations ready to undertake repairs and spare parts. From the dream of the first guy... The next test subject is GAZ 33086-72 “Countryman”. Square, hooded, all-wheel drive, brutal - the dream car of the first guy in the village. Growling with Belarusian diesel, he patiently waited for us to enjoy the sissy “Valdai”. And his time has come.

In the LAWN everything is simple: foot on the rear wheel, hands on the side, push - and you’re in the back. Our people don’t take taxis to buy bread. Well, let's take a look under the hood. Here, unlike Valdai, there is freedom. And most importantly - a diesel engine. Not a “gluttonous” gasoline engine, but a turbodiesel with a displacement of 4.75 liters, developing 117 hp, with a pre-heater, which came in very handy in the cold.

MMZ D-245.7, due to its origin, is not as soft and quiet in operation as Cummins. Of course, his “grandfathers” stood on tractors, and there are completely different priorities - traction, traction and more traction. And the bonnet GAS is the place for it. Especially all-wheel drive, with low gear and power take-off. In a word, almost a tractor.

But the "Countryman" is not a tractor - it is still a truck. A relative of the machines on which virgin soil was raised, thanks to which all Soviet trade received cargo in cities, without which the Soviet post office could not do. He is from that huge gray tribe of GAZ vehicles that supported the not-so-advanced structure of the great and mighty USSR. And there is no doubt about it.

Deja Vu, or Feel Young Let's sit down in the cockpit. Now there is a plastic panel and an instrument panel, replete with dials and indicator lamps - before everything was simpler and more iron-clad. But the feelings are the same! You close your eyes and you are back in 1987. I immediately remember the instructions of the CP instructor about double clutch release with the throttle, the story about how to use the manual gas, transmission handbrake, etc. You open your eyes and realize that something has changed. The steering wheel has become smaller and thicker, there are new seats compared to what it was - a royal throne. The instrument panel is again plastic, the accelerator pedal is no longer floor-mounted, but there is still the same piece of rubber on the floor. And it was as if 25 years had not happened. By the way, the manual throttle cable is in place. Why it has a turbodiesel, I can’t imagine. But now there is an emergency button! And the handbrake is still transmission, in the same place. But let's go for a ride...

Under the hood of “Countryman” there is freedom unlike “Valdai”

“Countryman” drives differently, not like its gasoline counterparts. The car accelerates slowly and unhurriedly, scaring those around with the roar of the engine. It brakes effectively, and the force on the brake pedal is much lower. But in order to slow down the engine and switch to a lower gear, you have to remember double squeezing and “pumping up the gas.” I wonder if drivers of bonneted GAZ vehicles are entitled to bonuses for working on antiques? The car drives and can certainly very successfully transport the 4 tons of cargo assigned to it. But outside the window is the 21st century... In the distant 80s, when a box with synchronizers on a truck was considered a “bells and whistles”, such a car would not have had a price.

But then the road ends, ahead is a snow-covered field covered with a thick blanket of snow. You can get to it only by overcoming the huge snow parapet left by the road workers. A good reason to check out the all-wheel drive of the Countryman. Don’t believe your eyes and keep your teeth clenched. “Do you need help turning on all-wheel drive?” asks the dealer representative. For what? The arms and legs seem to be in place, the instructions are in front of your eyes on the panel. Or?.. Yes, everything is still the same. We bet a foreigner can’t ride a “Countryman” without instructions. He doesn’t understand that you need to turn on the levers that activate all-wheel drive not by placing your hand on the handle, but by clasping it around the rocker at the base and pressing your forearm on the lever. Then the four-wheel drive will turn on. Why is the indicator light on the panel with the image of all-wheel drive not on? Maybe it didn't turn on? Turned on. Instead, the ABS light comes on. Silent pause. Perhaps someone thinks this is normal? All-wheel drive is turned on, and the “Countryman” easily cuts through a snow parapet more than half a meter high. We are already jumping into the fields. Yes, yes, let's gallop - the empty body and spring suspension do their job. Raising clouds of snow, the car rushes across the virgin soil, and I am ready to forgive it for everything described above. And light bulbs, and archaic construction, and dental fillings that are about to fly out if you don’t clench your teeth. Such a car is needed and should be in the village. In bad weather, in winter, in muddy times, he will reach civilization without any problems thanks to a simple and reliable all-wheel drive. On virgin snow, under which there is an ordinary field, the “Countryman” is in his element. It is not scary that there may be a hole or a log under the snow. Thanks to its simple and very reliable design, it instills confidence that such a car can handle anything. And it’s okay that there are narrow tires on the front and a dual-pitch tire on the rear. He's going, going fast. It’s just that the car starts to “pull” willingly only after 1500 rpm. I return to the asphalt, and my colleagues ask me to repeat it for an encore. With pleasure! It's worth it. We drive further into the fields and faster. Emotions are like those of children sledding down a mountain. And the thought that you will have to walk far behind the tractor does not even arise, the car behaves so confidently. The steering wheel has to work non-stop. Its gear ratio is still the same... But the car drives through snowdrift after snowdrift on virgin soil, provoking another surge of adrenaline. I can’t even believe that such an archaic design can give so many positive emotions! But seriously, such a car is needed and should be in the countryside.
