GAZ-3309 – fuel truck and tanker

A blunt-nosed small-tonnage truck with a traditional, chopped-off cabin has been produced by the Nizhny Novgorod auto giant GAZ for a quarter of a century. An elliptical tank is mounted on the vehicle chassis.

The fuel tanker tank is designed like a thermos. Two shells made of 3 mm sheet steel are separated by a heat insulator that performs 2 functions: reducing heating and evaporation of flammable cargo, fuse upon impact.

The fins from the inside impart rigidity to the structure. Prevents water hammer when driving and braking. Dividing the interior space into two compartments serves the same purpose.

The flatness of the tank, instead of a cylindrical shape, is aimed at bringing the center of gravity closer to the frame of the chassis as a measure to counteract rollover. According to spark safety requirements, contact surfaces are made of aluminum:

The density limit for petroleum products is 0.83 kg per dm. There are design differences between liquid tanks. The fuel tanker tank is marked ATs-36135, the tanker tank ATZ-36135-011. The fuel tanker model based on the ATZ 4.9 GAZ-3309 truck became a brand of the automobile plant.

The ATZ-4.9 fuel tanker is designed for transportation, short-term storage and mechanized refueling of various equipment with light petroleum products while simultaneously taking into account the volume of dispensed fuel, as well as for pumping fuel from one container to another, bypassing its own.

The ATZ-4.9 fuel tanker on the GAZ-3309 chassis fully complies with the requirements of GOST R 50913 for product safety, as well as compliance with environmental standards.

ATZ tanks are manufactured according to individual customer requirements: all tanks are made of high-strength steel 09G2S, the inner surface of the tank is treated with a special compound to increase corrosion resistance. The outer surface of the tank is painted with imported enamel of increased durability. The ATZ-4.9 tanker can be equipped with both domestic and imported components.

The GAZ-3309 car is equipped with a 4-stroke in-line diesel engine with four cylinders. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The gas turbine turbocharging system operates with intermediate cooling of the air mixture using a tubular-plate radiator.

Motor cooling is forced liquid. It is possible to equip it with Minsk, Yaroslavl, Chinese diesel engines with similar characteristics.

Filling the tank of a fuel tanker is possible from an external source through the neck and its own pump. Self-pumping takes 12–15 minutes from a depth of up to 1 m. A mechanical pump pumps up to 0.4 tons per minute. Emptying a buried tank at a gas station is primarily done by gravity through a hose.

The power take-off drives the transfer device. Before dispensing, fuel passes through a fine filter and meter through the distribution hose. Dosage is based on filling the fuel tank.

The fuel tanker tank rests on a riveted stamped frame, the upper support platform of which is raised above the ground by 1.365 m. The suspension of the front and rear wheels is spring. Springs are longitudinal, paired, semi-elliptical, reinforced on the rear axle.

The front one is additionally equipped with double-acting telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. Adaptation for unpaved roads forced the designers to stiffen the suspensions.

The track of the front wheels is 60 mm narrower than the rear, 1.63 m. Ground clearance is 265 mm. The clutch is friction, dry, single-disc, hydraulically driven. Manual gearbox synchronized, 5 gears. The fuel tanker's cardan consists of 2 shafts with an intermediate support.

Drum brakes are shoe type. The mechanism is double-circuit. The drive is pneumohydraulic. Equipped with a vacuum pump. The parking brake is mechanical, cable type, connected to the rear wheel brakes.
