Gas tank UAZ 469: standard, enlarged, salon

The main command vehicle in the Soviet Army, as well as in the Warsaw Pact countries, starting from the mid-1970s, replacing its predecessor GAZ-69 in this capacity. Serial production of the UAZ-469 and UAZ-469B models began in December 1972; before that, starting in 1964, several pilot production series were produced. In 1985, production of the modernized UAZ-3151 model with a normalized industry index began. Its production in 2003 was limited only to the gearbox (3151) and export (31512, 31514 and 31519) versions due to the transition to the modernized UAZ-315195 Hunter model for the domestic market.

Starting in April, during 2010, a limited series of SUVs was produced under the conventional marketing name “469” (factory index UAZ-315196). The release of this series was timed to coincide with the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and was planned in a volume of 5000 units [ source not specified 852 days

In 2011, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation decided to abandon further purchases of the UAZ-3151 [1].

History [edit | edit code]

The UAZ-469 was designed for transporting people, cargo and light car trailers on all types of roads. The development of the car began in the 1950s, and the first prototype, called the UAZ-460, was built in 1958 [2]. The car looks like an American Jeep - a tough, utilitarian SUV, but not very comfortable. It is interesting that already in 1965, images of the UAZ-469 could be found in the Soviet press, but the car was still far from being put into production.

The first UAZ-469 rolled off the assembly line of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant on December 15, 1972. They replaced the GAZ-69. The Volga GAZ-21, well known to the mechanics of those years and known for its reliability and structural safety margin, was largely used as an aggregate base.

Under the designation UAZ-469, the car was produced until 1985, after which, in accordance with the 1966 industry system, it received the four-digit number 3151 (the UAZ-469B car received the number 31512).

In August 1974, three completely standard (without winches and traction chains) UAZ-469 vehicles during a test run reached the glacier on Mount Elbrus at an altitude of 4200 meters [3].

Enlarged tank UAZ 469

UAZ vehicles are designed for operation in particularly difficult conditions. During the Soviet era, these vehicles were supplied only for the needs of the Ministry of Defense and for the use of secretaries of regional party committees. That is, the vehicles are extremely durable and ready for use in harsh conditions, in mountainous regions, on rural off-road terrain, at training grounds during military exercises and in areas of real combat operations. It is rare that gas stations are available in these circumstances.

Therefore, the UAZ 469 often requires the installation of an additional fuel tank. If, with the standard equipment of the UAZ 469, the volume of the vehicle’s fuel tank is 39 liters, and two tanks - 78 liters, then together with an additional tank it can reach up to 200 liters. Now this is a normal power reserve!

One of the options for increasing the fuel supply is to upgrade the standard gas tanks to a capacity of 100 liters each. A drawing of the enlarged UAZ 469 tank is shown in the figure below.

Each such enlarged fuel tank of the UAZ 469 is installed in its regular place and secured in the usual way. A general view of the fuel tanks is shown in the figure below. Inside the tanks there are vertical partitions, at the bottom of which there are holes for drainage.

Construction [edit | edit code]

  • The body is open, five-seater, with a removable canvas awning, four-door, side doors with removable metal glazed extensions. The tailgate (“fifth door”) is for loading luggage; two folding seats in the back can accommodate two more passengers. The canopy arches are removable, the windshield frame folds back onto the hood, which makes camouflage and transportation easier (for example, in a helicopter).
  • The car body is mounted on a durable and torsionally rigid spar frame.
  • The clutch is a dry single-plate clutch.
  • Transmission - 4-speed (with synchronizers in 3rd and 4th gears). The transfer case is two-stage, rigidly attached to the gearbox (there is no intermediate driveshaft).

UAZ-469 carries 7 passengers and 100 kg of luggage or two passengers and 600 kg. The car can tow a trailer weighing 850 kg.

To increase the ground clearance to 300 mm, drive axles with a double main gear (an extended crankcase of reduced vertical size) and reducing final drives (between the axle shaft and the hub, a pair of spur gears with internal gearing; the direction of rotation of the axle shaft and the hub are the same) were used. The UAZ-469B had drive axles with a single main gear (designed on the basis of axles from the GAZ-69), and there were no final drives. The ground clearance of the “civilian” UAZ was 220 mm. The driveshafts on the UAZ-469B were slightly longer. The total gear ratio of the drive axles (both geared and gearless) was almost the same (for the geared one 5.38, and for the gearless one 5.125). You can distinguish the “geared” UAZ-469 (UAZ-3151) from the “gearless” UAZ-469B (UAZ-31512) by looking under the car, and from the outside - on the “geared” rear axle, torque is transmitted to the hub through a conical “cap”, on the “gearless” one, the axle shaft flange is visible. 300 ml is poured into each reducer (and there are four of them). transmission oil.

The front axle hubs were switchable, which made it possible to slightly reduce fuel consumption on roads with good surfaces. The driver used a tubular socket wrench to unscrew the protective cap ( the same wrench was used to adjust the wheel bearings

), then use a hexagon on “12” to connect and disconnect the coupling. Vehicles have been equipped with quick-release or self-locking clutches since the 1990s. In 1980, the exterior lighting equipment on cars was changed. The direction indicators at the front and rear received orange lenses, and turn indicator repeaters appeared on the side of the hood. At the same time, hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers were introduced into the suspension design instead of lever ones. Since 1983, the car has been equipped with a model 414 engine with a power of 77 hp. With. A year later, an expansion tank and a sealed radiator cap appeared in the cooling system.

Main distinctive features of the system

Fuel tanks are made of steel sheet by stamping. The halves of the tank are connected to each other by resistance welding. Until the end of 2016, the car’s design used 2 tanks with a volume of 38 liters each.

The filler necks are led to hatches located on the rear fenders of the SUV.

Examples of tanks of different capacities.

Due to the long neck, the driver can fill each gas tank with 1.5-2.0 liters more fuel than the factory claims, but there is a risk of liquid fuel getting into the absorber tank.

Since November, the UAZ Patriot 2016 has undergone modifications to the vehicle frame, which made it possible to introduce a single tank with a capacity of 68-70 liters.

The tank is made of impact-resistant 6-layer plastic, resistant to oil products; steel tapes are used for fastening.

The tank has an increased height, which led to the introduction of a new fuel cartridge and a modified fuel level sensor.

UAZ-3151 [edit | edit code ]

In 1985, the car was modernized, the geared version, according to the new classification, received the index 3151. The cars appeared:

  • Hydraulic clutch release;
  • Cardan shafts with radial-face seal bearings;
  • New lighting devices (two-section sidelights, three-section rear lights FP-132, side repeaters);
  • Electric windshield washer;
  • Suspended clutch and brake pedals;
  • High-reliability drive axles with a changed gear ratio of the main pair and wheel gearboxes;
  • Brake system with dual-circuit drive and signaling device;
  • Split safety steering column;
  • More efficient and reliable heater;
  • Some cars have a fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox, a vacuum brake booster;
  • The power of the UMZ-417 engine has been increased to 80 hp. With.;
  • The maximum speed of the car increased to 120 km/h [ source not specified 852 days

The main disadvantage of the system

The disadvantage of the early fuel system is that the pump is installed only in the right tank. The left container is connected to the right with a separate hose through which gasoline is pumped. If the pump is damaged or the body of the right tank is destroyed, the fuel supply stops.

A rupture in the connecting line leads to fuel leaking onto the ground. The advantage of duplicated tanks is their size; the lower edges of the tanks do not protrude beyond the frame, which increases the geometric cross-country ability of the SUV.

After starting to use a single plastic tank, it turned out that the increased height of the gas tank worsened the vehicle’s cross-country ability.

When overcoming difficult terrain, there is a risk of damage to the container as a result of contact with stones or trunks of fallen trees.

The situation is partially compensated by installing a metal protective screen, but the sheet additionally reduces the ground clearance of the UAZ Patriot.

Container sizes

There are several types of gas tanks on UAZ Patriot cars:

  1. Standard for cars produced until the end of autumn 2016, having a length of 870 mm, a width of 220 mm and a height of 210 mm. The tank is made of steel sheet 1.5 mm thick, weight is 13.5 kg (modification with a fuel pump).
  2. The factory capacity for vehicles built after November 2016 weighs 10.8 kg. Weight reduction is achieved through the use of plastic.
  3. Non-standard metal gas tanks, which are manufactured by specialized workshops. By changing the geometric shape, an increase in the fuel supply on board to 120-180 liters is achieved.

How to drain gasoline from tanks

To drain gasoline from the tanks, there are special holes made on the bottom of the tank. The holes are closed with plugs equipped with 6-sided socket heads; sealing is ensured by the shape of the mating surfaces. It is impossible to drain the fuel using a hose lowered into the filler necks.

It is allowed to pump out the liquid using a standard pump through the line leading to the fuel rail. Before disconnecting, you should take into account the pressure in the pipeline, which leads to a spill of some gasoline in the engine compartment.

Features of the tank cover

The filler necks of the tanks are located under metal hinged caps on the rear wings of the car. The plastic cap is equipped with a safety valve that allows gasoline vapors to escape when the containers heat up.

Fuel tank cap with lock.

Since standard hatches are not equipped with locking locks, a number of owners install modified plugs with a lock.

On cars produced since 2022, only the neck has been retained on the passenger side. The cork and metal cap have not undergone any changes.

Repair and production of fuel tanks, gas tanks

Instructions for installing a UAZ Patriot tank of increased volume - 70 liters

For long-distance road trips, a supply of fuel from a proven gas station is of great importance in order to refuel at as few gas stations as possible along the way. Did you know that your car's gas tank capacity can be more than doubled? “Ether-service” will help you replace your fuel tank with another one of twice the volume.

We also carry out other types of fuel tank repairs. Reliability and guarantee are determined by our materials - stainless steel. A patch in a broken tank made of untreated ferrous metal will rot within a year under our operating conditions. We use high quality stainless steel in our gas tanks, which does not require special processing and subsequent maintenance.

Repair of fuel tanks is carried out using argon-arc welding. Nowadays, most fuel tanks of trucks and boats are made of aluminum, so if defects (cracks, breaks) appear in the tanks, argon-arc welding is indispensable.

Our specialists, thanks to their extensive experience in welding fuel tanks, will bring the faulty part into working condition. If removing the tank for welding is a problem, our workers will make every effort to eliminate the defects on site (on-site visit is possible, see below).
