And now attention to the question, we went into the forest with another loaf. The driver of that loaf claims that his front axle cannot be connected unless he has engaged a lower gear.

This is where the question began to torment me: which of us is right after all?

By buying a UAZ car, we acquire reliability, practicality, and endurance. This SUV is capable of driving where the most sophisticated foreign car would lose ground, and it pleases with its unpretentiousness and wear resistance.

But nothing material lasts forever, and one day the UAZ driver is faced with the question of repair. Today we will talk about such an important detail as the bridge. Many people wonder how to turn on the front axle on a UAZ. The answer will be given below.

Definition and purpose

The wheels of a car need a connecting beam that would support them and provide reliable support and fasteners. A bridge acts as such a beam. It takes on all the loads that arise during movement and absorbs them with elastic parts. If this device were not provided, the car would not cope with the tasks that it has to perform.

If the axle is a drive axle, then, in addition to its connecting function, it also acts as a torque transmitter. The drive axle is a complex device, a unit consisting of a mass of parts. Each of them carries out certain operational functions. Remove one part and the machine will no longer be functional. This is why it is so important to regularly check the quality of all components of the car. The bridge structure includes the following elements:

  1. Managed. This is, as a rule, the front axle of the car, equipped with either rear-wheel drive, which is outdated today, or all-wheel drive. But there is another option: in transport equipment for public utilities or agriculture, it is the rear axle that is steered, not the front axle. This type of design is divided into two subtypes.
  2. Uncut. This is a special beam equipped with a mechanism for steering knuckles, fixed on the sides; wheel hubs are placed on the knuckles. The purpose of this design is to control the rotation of the wheels while driving. The most important conditions are the lightness and strength of the continuous beam. That is why, as a rule, it is made of high-strength steel using forged technology.
  3. Split. This is already a gearbox equipped with drive shafts. The purpose of the cutting mechanism is to transmit torque to the wheels. The split bridge provides ample opportunities for vehicle maneuvering.
  4. Supportive. This design is used to increase the lifting power of the machine and acts as an additional supporting element. Without this part, a car designed to transport large cargo would simply fall apart within the first kilometer. The support device can be found in such a unique vehicle as a motor home.
  5. Continuous leader. This is a rather complex structure, consisting not only of a beam, but also axle shafts, bearings, and a differential. On the beam of this design springs and brackets are attached to secure the suspension. Thanks to the continuous drive axle, the drive wheels can rotate at different rates, in addition, the design softens the load and controls the car when cornering. Some bridge parts undergo additional processing to give them greater strength and elastic properties. Thus, the axle shafts are made of high-quality steel and then hardened with high-frequency heat.

Main design problems

A bridge is a complex structure, the failure of which causes the entire vehicle system to fail. Main malfunctions of the rear and front axles.

The main cause of most problems is wear of components or their poor quality. Strong overloads will not have a positive effect on the operation of the parts; still, take care of your car. Insufficient lubricant for parts is another cause of malfunctions. Incorrect adjustment of the front axle bearings will also lead to unpleasant consequences.

Axles from MTZ significantly increase wheel clearance

Tuning is a good thing, but only if it is carried out by real professionals. But quite often, unscrupulous specialists make gross mistakes, as a result of which the stroke and dimensions of the driveshaft completely do not coincide with the required parameters. The result is a serious breakdown and the need for almost major repairs.

Symptoms of structural failure.

  1. The front axle on the UAZ, like the rear axle, begins to emit a characteristic sound.
  2. At first the car is almost imperceptible, and then it begins to lose control more and more.
  3. The driver notices that fuel consumption is higher than before.
  4. Engine and transmission parts wear out quite quickly.
  5. Wedge while moving. Note that this is the worst of the symptoms. This means that there is a gap between the bearings, which can lead to serious problems. The wedge is accompanied by noise and crackling. In this case, urgent repairs are necessary.

To prevent malfunctions, timely adjustment of the UAZ rear axle, and the front one too, is necessary.

Repair of the most common faults

Restoring the bridge to operability is not very difficult: but it is required to be careful when performing operations. What “diseases” are most common?

Leak formation

Where the steering knuckle connects to the bridge, there is an oil seal - one of the weak points of the design in terms of lubricant leakage. The oil seal can leak oil not only due to wear, but also when the breather is clogged. If you add more lubricant than required, the result will be the same: a leak. There are two types of oil seals:

  • rubber: inexpensive, but also short-lived;
  • polyurethane: more expensive, have a long service life.

To replace a part, place the car on a level place and jack up the problem side, loosening the wheel nuts in advance. Further:

  • remove the steering knuckle;
  • clamp the part in a vice;
  • pull out the oil seal by prying it with a flat screwdriver or other suitable tool;
  • pull the oil seal out of the support cavity;
  • Lubricate the seal before installation;
  • press in the oil seal using a tube of the appropriate diameter.
  • Installation is in the reverse order.

The mechanism began to hum

First of all, check the oil level. If it is normal, the bridge will have to be removed and disassembled. If the bridge hums constantly in any driving mode, the reasons may be as follows:

  • incorrect setting or limiting service life of differential bearings;
  • breakage (wear) of the axle shaft (its bearing);
  • wear, damage, incorrect gear adjustment.

These bearings simply need to be replaced with new ones. If a humming noise appears during a sudden stop or acceleration, the reasons are as follows:

  • incorrect clearance between the final drive gears;
  • The final drive gear teeth do not mesh correctly.

In this case, you need to correctly adjust the gearing or replace defective parts. If the bridge hums when the UAZ enters a turn and moves in a straight line, the reasons may be the following:

  • satellites rotate with great effort;
  • abnormal operation of the axle gears in the differential;
  • destruction, severe wear of the axle bearing;
  • incorrect clearance between gears located in the differential.

To restore the functionality of the mechanism, adjust the clearances correctly and replace damaged, worn bearings. It is worth noting that the desired result when adjusting the gaps can only be achieved on a bench.

Wheel axial play

It occurs when the wheel bearings are incorrectly adjusted or when they completely fail, which is caused by over-tightening. As a result, the bearings become very hot, the smear liquefies and flows out. Algorithm of actions when performing the correct adjustment:

  1. Jack up the wheel on the desired side;
  2. Use a puller to remove the axle shaft;
  3. Move the lock washer to the side and unscrew the lock nut;
  4. Spin the wheel: if it rotates tightly, the reason may lie in jamming of the cuffs, contact of the drum and pads, etc.;
  5. Tighten the adjusting nut. Do this gradually while spinning the wheel. Use the WRENCH;
  6. Unscrew the nut about a third of a turn and install the lock washer. Tighten the nut and lock it;
  7. Check how the wheel rotates: it should spin freely without sticking;
  8. Replace the axle shaft, replace the bolts and tighten them.

Disassembly

The front axle requires regular inspection and maintenance. Maintenance consists of adjusting bearings and steering knuckles. From time to time it is necessary to change the lubricant in them. If you notice that some part is behaving unpredictably or incorrectly, do not be afraid to take on the repair of the front axle. Armed with useful information, patience, and tools, you'll be sure to get the job done.

First you need to remove the front axle, for which you should place bricks or blocks under the rear wheels of the car to make it more convenient to work. Then we remove the pipelines; they are attached to a flexible hose, going to the brake devices. We unscrew all the nuts securing the shock absorbers, as well as the bolts connecting the drive gear to the driveshaft. We disconnect the rod from the bipod, remove the stepladders, pads and gaskets.

Dismantling the front beam

Now you need to slightly raise the front bumper of the car. The next, most important stage of work begins - dismantling the front axle.

  1. Remove the wheels by unscrewing all the nuts.
  2. We dismantle the bipod rod.
  3. Remove the brake drums and wheel release clutches.
  4. Then you need to disconnect the inner ring and lock washer by straightening the edges of the so-called lock washer.
  5. The next stage is the disassembly of wheel hubs, brake flaps and steering knuckles.
  6. Unscrew the ball joint and steering linkage rod.
  7. Disconnect the steering knuckle housing and the gasket set.

After disassembling the front axle is completed, thoroughly wash the parts and inspect them in the light to find damage. If you notice even the slightest crack or wear, do not spare the part, feel free to discard it and install a new one. The main thing is not to throw away good nuts and spare parts along with an unnecessary element, so you should always have order in your garage.

Switching technology

When you're driving on a normal road, your car doesn't require much. But when a real obstacle arises on the way in the form of impassable swamps, mud and potholes, you need to be prepared for them so as not to ruin the car. What can be done in this case? The best option is to engage the front axle.

In order to avoid defects in hubs and other parts, this device should be connected when the machine is completely stopped. To determine whether the device connection was successful, you can use three popular methods.

  1. The first one is this: once you start moving, you need to monitor how the rear wheels behave - they should work without the help of the front ones.
  2. The second test is to check the car's handling when cornering: with front-wheel drive connected, the car drives stronger than with it disabled.
  3. The third way to check is even simpler - ask an outside observer to see whether the drives are spinning or not. If not, then the couplings are disconnected, which is what we needed.

Transfer case lever positions and their meanings

The lever is located, naturally, in the cabin in close proximity to the main gear selection lever of the transmission. Let's move on to consider the positions of the lever with explanations and how the device works.

  1. The lever is located at the left rear. This position is the main one and indicates that the front-wheel drive is deactivated. Here the transfer case does not function, and the transmission of torque is fully addressed to the rear axle.
  2. The lever moved forward and to the right. This position indicates that the front end drive is connected. Note that downshift still remains inactive. This mode is very effective on slippery surfaces or when overcoming light off-road conditions.
  3. The position when the lever is moved to the right and then back half the original stroke. This position is characterized by the neutral position of the dispensing unit, which indicates that the vehicle is stationary at a given moment.
  4. The lever is in a position almost identical to the previous one, but is brought back all the way. With this position, the “observer” understands that the SUV operates in an all-wheel drive system, and with an activated low gear. Such actions should be resorted to when overcoming significant obstacles off-road or if the UAZ Patriot is “stuck” in a swamp and needs to get out of there. That is, the mode is effective in critical situations and cannot be used continuously, otherwise there is a risk of harm to the system units.

The design of the chassis and transmission of the UAZ-3741

Already the first car of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant - the famous GAZ-69 - had a 4x4 wheel arrangement, had simply fantastic cross-country ability and was extremely unpretentious. And to this day, the concept of the “people's SUV”, embedded in the legendary “Kozlik”, remains relevant and is implemented in all modern UAZ models. All-wheel drive is also provided in the UAZ-3741 (until 1985 - UAZ-452), which is better known as “Loaf” (which reflects its characteristic shape) or “Tablet” (due to its frequent use as an ambulance) and ambulances in the army).

The UAZ-3741 chassis is based on two drive axles with a classic dependent suspension on semi-elliptic springs and hydraulic shock absorbers. Moreover, only in this model the springs have 13 leaves (in other models there are fewer leaves), and on the front and rear suspension the springs are interchangeable.

The car's transmission has a fairly simple structure; it is also built according to a traditional design without any special features. The transmission contains a 4-speed manual transmission (classic manual transmission), which is paired with a two-speed transfer case (has overdrive and downshift gears) - thanks to the presence of the transfer case, the number of possible gears is doubled, which greatly increases the capabilities of the transmission. Torque from the transfer case is transmitted via two cardan shafts to the front and rear drive axles. In drive axles, the moment is divided into two streams and directed to the wheels, ensuring their rotation.

Let's talk separately about the purpose and design of the front drive axle of cars of the UAZ-3741 family.

Transfer case maintenance

Like any other vehicle device, for stable operation the UAZ Patriot transfer case requires systematic maintenance, since the SUV is often operated in difficult conditions and its components are subject to increased loads. It is necessary to regularly check the transmission oil level and replace it on time.

The manufacturer's instructions on the frequency of replacing the UAZ Patriot transmission are contained in the user manual supplied with the vehicle. For new cars that have recently left the assembly line, the procedure for the initial change of transmission fluid is prescribed no later than after 5 thousand km. mileage Such a short interval is due to the fact that during the grinding of new parts to each other, which occurs during the running-in of the car, there is a high probability of the appearance of metal particles that can negatively affect the durability of the mechanisms.

Which oil is better to use?

The UAZ Patriot operating manual recommends the use of oils with different performance indicators for certain transmission components. However, in practice, it is not very advisable to purchase three types of liquid at once, especially since it is sold in containers of 1 liter or more. and you will have significant balances.

The volume of oil required for the UAZ Patriot transfer case, as indicated in the manual, is 0.7 liters, for axles - 2.7 liters (1.4 for the front and 1.3 for the rear) and 2.5 liters for the gearbox. Accordingly, if you decide to use the same transmission for all components, you will need 6 liters of oil.

The oil in the transfer case must be filled to the bottom edge of the filler hole.

The level is checked with a dipstick that should be equipped on the car. It should be taken into account that active use of the car can lead to a decrease in the oil level to 8 mm relative to the specified level. In this case, there is no need to level the oil level, since its total volume will ensure proper operation of all components.

Purpose of the front axle UAZ-3741

• Providing vehicle control; • Transmission and distribution of torque to the front wheels (due to which the vehicle’s increased cross-country ability is ensured); • Transfer of support reaction from wheels in contact with the road to the body; • Transfer of inertial forces arising in the body while the vehicle is moving to the wheels.

Thus, the front axle solves all the same problems as the rear axle, but it also performs the functions of driving a car. Therefore, the UAZ front axle has a slightly more complex structure, which will be discussed below. But before moving on to the description of the front axle, it is necessary to make a brief overview of all the drive axles installed on the Bukhanki and other UAZ models.

Types of drive axles of UAZ vehicles

UAZ vehicles use several types of axles that have structural differences and differences in characteristics. Today on the roads you can find cars from Ulyanovsk with three types of bridges:

• Traditional split bridge with single-stage transmission (old model, also called “regular”, “civilian” or “collective farm”, but in reality it is a “Timken” type bridge, it is named after the name of the engineer who developed it); • Bridge with final drives (also called “military”, but in the literature it appears under the name “U-shaped” or “portal”); • A modern one-piece bridge of the “Spicer” type (a new model, the bridge is also named after the engineer who developed it).

The main difference between “civilian” and “military” bridges is that the latter are equipped not only with the main gear, but also with final drives (wheel drives). The presence of final drives increases the torque that each of the wheels receives, so a car with a “military” axle has better maneuverability. Also, thanks to the final drives, the axis of the “military” bridge is 4 cm higher than the axis of the “civilian” one, which has a positive effect on the vehicle’s ground clearance.

However, “military” axles have a larger total gear ratio (which results in an increase in torque), so a car equipped with them has slightly worse speed characteristics, and a motor that constantly operates at high speeds wears out its life faster.

To be specific, the gear ratio of old-style “civilian” axles can be 4.625 or 5.125 (depending on the number of gear teeth in the driven main gear), the gear ratio of “military” axles is 5.38 (2.77 for the main gear and 1. 94 for final drives), and for Spicer-type axles - 4.111 (used on cars with a gasoline engine) or 4.625 (installed on cars with a diesel engine).

Regardless of the type, UAZ axles (rear only) can be equipped with automatic or forced differential locking. Moreover, the locking drive can be mechanical, electric or pneumatic; in the latter case, the car is retrofitted with a simple pneumatic system, which can also solve other problems.

Finally, bridges for UAZ vehicles differ in track width. All “civilian” and “military” bridges initially had a width of 1443-1445 mm, but today UAZ produces bridges with a gauge increased to 1600 mm (these are mainly modern “spicer” bridges).

As for the UAZ-452/3741 cars that interest us, until very recently they were equipped only with conventional (“civilian”) axles, and in recent years, from the assembly lines of the Ulyanovsk Automobile with axles (front and rear) of the “Spicer” type. “Military” axles were never serially installed on this model, although on the roads (or rather, off-road) you can often find shabby “Loaves” with “military” axles - usually this is a modernization carried out independently by the owner of the car.

Therefore, we will further consider the design of the UAZ-3741 front axles only of the old model (Timken type) and “spicers”.

Design and operation of the front axle UAZ-3741

The old-style front axles are not fundamentally different from the Spicer-type front axles. The fundamental differences between them are only in the design of the crankcase, in the dimensions of the main gear and differential elements, as well as in some of the parts used.

Construction of an old-style bridge. The basis of the bridge is a split crankcase, consisting of two halves separated in a vertical plane. Casings are pressed into each half, inside of which the axle shafts are located. The housings also have safety valves to prevent excessive oil pressure build-up. The crankcase contains the main gear and differential, their arrangement is standard: a small-diameter drive gear is located transversely (connected to the driveshaft), it meshes with a large driven gear located longitudinally; Inside the driven gear there is a differential consisting of four satellites mounted on two axles and two axle gears.

At the edges of the crankcase casings, pivot units are installed; they consist of ball joints, on which the steering axle housings (or steering knuckle housings) are mounted using pivot pins. On the side opposite the axle shaft, axles are attached to the axle housings using bolts. The wheel hub is mounted directly on the axle using two bearings. The ball joint housings contain constant velocity joints (CV joints), their outer axles are located in the wheel hubs (more precisely, in the axles on which the hubs are mounted).

The main feature of the UAZ front axles is the presence of a mechanism for connecting the wheel hub with the axle shaft. This mechanism is implemented in the form of a coupling mounted on the CV joint axle - with the help of this coupling you can connect or disconnect the joint axle with the hub, which ensures the transmission of torque from the differential to the wheel. When the clutch is disconnected, the wheel hub rotates freely on the axle - in this case, the car has a 4x2 wheel arrangement. When the clutch is engaged, the wheel hub is connected through the CV joint to the axle shaft and differential - in this case, the car receives 4x4 all-wheel drive.

In old-style axles, drum-type brake mechanisms are installed on the hubs. To control the wheels, the bridge is equipped with steering knuckle levers (installed in the upper part of the steering knuckle housings, along the axis of the pins) and steering rods connected to them.

Construction of Spicer type bridges. In general, the design of these bridges is the same as described above, but the difference lies in the design of the crankcase. In “spicers” the crankcase is one-piece; it is made in the form of a cast part into which axle housings (stockings) of circular cross-section are pressed. For access to the main gear and differential, a bolted cover is provided in the axle housing.

It is precisely this crankcase design that lies the main advantage of the new axles. Now, to repair the gearbox, you do not need to remove and “halve” the bridge (which is impossible to do without dismantling the bridge - this was one of the main problems of old bridges), which is associated with a serious investment of time and effort, but simply remove the crankcase cover. Also, the one-piece design provides higher rigidity and reliability of the bridge.

Another difference between Spicer-type front axles and conventional ones is the installation of a new-style CV joint (Birfield type; old axles have Weiss-type hinges), which have six balls versus four on the old-style hinges. And finally, the front axles of this type are equipped with modern disc brakes.

New and old bridges have some differences in characteristics. It was already said above about gear ratios, there are also differences in handling - in Spicer-type axles the wheel rotation angle reaches 32°, while in old-style axles the wheel rotation angle does not exceed 29°. Otherwise, the bridges are not very different and driving a car on both types of bridges has no special features.

Permanent (Full-time) or part-time all-wheel drive: what is the difference and which is better?

Probably everyone knows what all-wheel drive is. In simple terms, this term means that all the wheels on an SUV, ATV or other vehicle are driven. It would seem that everything is simple, the power from the engine is simply transmitted to all wheels.

In general, yes, but the torque transmission scheme implemented may be different. The two most common options are permanent all-wheel drive (Full-time) and rigidly connected all-wheel drive (Part-time).

There are other implementation options: through a viscous coupling based on front-wheel drive, multi-mode systems, technologies from individual manufacturers, such as quattro from Audi, and even options using an electric motor on one of the axles.

But all these systems are often complex and packed with electronics, or are not designed for off-road use. Therefore, we will focus on the simplest and most common permanent (full-time) and part-time all-wheel drive systems. Let's start with the last one.

Hard-wired all-wheel drive (part-time)

This type of all-wheel drive appeared earlier than the others. If we take domestic equipment, then plug-in all-wheel drive is used on UAZ, GAZ-66 and other all-wheel drive vehicles.

Correct operation of the front drive axle

The front drive axles of UAZ vehicles have design features that impose certain control requirements. In particular, the axles provide for the disconnection of the wheel hubs from the axle shafts - this is done in order to increase the service life of the axle parts when the front-wheel drive is turned off. Therefore, to enable front-wheel drive on the UAZ-3741, you need to perform two steps:

  1. By turning the clutch, connect the wheel hub to the axle shaft;
  2. Use the lever to engage front-wheel drive.

The couplings are located on the wheels themselves; to rotate them, rotating caps are brought out; usually there is a mark on the cap indicating what position they are in - 4x2 or 4x4. Typically, the clutch is turned manually; to do this, before a bad section of the road, you need to get out of the car and turn the clutches on both front wheels with your hands. Note that in cars with an old-style axle, after engaging the clutches, it is also necessary to manually turn the driveshaft until it stops (more precisely, until it begins to turn at an angle corresponding to the play of the CV joints). With new bridges, you no longer need to crawl under the car.

Only after engaging the clutches can the front-wheel drive be engaged; this can be done both with the vehicle at rest and while driving at a speed of no more than 40 km/h. If the front-wheel drive lever is not set to the working position when the vehicle is at rest, then you need to start moving and turn on the lever while moving.

After overcoming the problem section of the road, you need to perform all the steps in the reverse order - stop the car, turn off the front axle with the lever and turn the clutch caps to the “4x2” position. Then the car will move like a regular rear-wheel drive one.

It is important to remember that you cannot engage front-wheel drive from the passenger compartment (with a lever) without engaging the clutches. It is also not recommended to constantly drive with the clutches engaged - this sharply reduces the life of the front axle and tires. However, in the off-season or when the Loaf is constantly used off-road, the clutches can be left on, and a moderate speed limit should be observed.

Interestingly, today there are systems for remote rotation of couplings; they can have a pneumatic or (less often) electric drive. In the presence of such a system, turning the clutches on and off is done using a button from the interior, which is very convenient.

How to disable hubs on UAZ Patriot

I have had them on my Hunter since day one, the car is ten years old and the mileage has exceeded 100,000 km. In the summer they are always turned off and only in the forest before a difficult section I turn them on, well, sometimes you forget. But he hasn’t given up to the bears yet, and he hasn’t abandoned the UAZ in the forest.

Of course, I changed the front driveshaft, but not often, I won’t even write about the consumption, I have a diesel engine and even in the most difficult conditions the consumption is less than with gasoline.
