Husqvarna 137 chainsaw - a legend of the last decade

The discontinued Husqvarna 137 household chainsaw still competes with modern models from leading manufacturers of similar power and purpose. The reason for this success is the successful design of the tool, efficiency, reliability of component systems and assemblies, and long service life.

When creating the project, valuable experience in the versatile application of previous developments, feedback from service specialists and ordinary users was used.

Competitors

1-Echo CS-3500 2-Partner 350 3-Stihl MS 180
The main competitor of the 137th model in the mass market segment was and remains the 180th “Stihl”. Its main advantage is that it is produced to this day, but Husqvarna has already changed its model range. Otherwise, the saws were almost complete classmates, so the discussion of the adherents comes down to an argument about what is better, hot or salty. For domestic needs, models such as Partner 350 or Echo CS-3500 are inferior to the Swedish model in reliability. It’s somehow even embarrassing to talk about purely Chinese and Russian (that is, Chinese again) units.

Device

The Husqvarna 137 saw combines elements of classic mechanical engineering design with modern technical and technological solutions. The design is a block containing a two-stroke internal combustion engine with an air cleaner, clutch kinematics, containers with a fuel mixture and oil for lubricating the cutting chain.

The guide bar and cutting chain belong to the category of replaceable equipment, therefore, after the end of their service life, they are replaced with identical analogues. The design of the connecting unit does not exclude the use of the tool with components from other brands, 13 and 15 inches long.

The advantages of this model:

  • affordable price;
  • light weight and compact overall dimensions;
  • excellent balancing;
  • convenient access to adjusting and tuning elements of the structure;
  • carburetor adjustment that does not require special equipment;
  • economical and durable high-speed internal combustion engine with a large reserve of torque.

Repair of Husqvarna saws

Let’s make a reservation right away: this equipment, despite not having a very large number of parts, is high-tech, and spare parts for it are very expensive, so it is advisable to carry out any repairs at a Husqvarna service center. Simply, independent intervention can not only void your warranty, but also lead to disastrous results.

Although there are a few areas you can tamper with without fear of harming your chainsaw.

1. Carburetor adjustment. We will look at it using the 137th model as an example.

For this:

  • screw L to set the highest speed;
  • after warming up the engine for 15 - 20 seconds. use screw H to set the quality of the mixture (if it smokes, it’s rich and tighten the screw, and if it squeals, it’s lean, unscrew it);
  • Use screw T to adjust the idle speed, rotating it clockwise until the chain begins to move, then slowly unscrew it until the chain stops completely.

2. Ignition. There is nothing to install in it, its repair (except for physical damage to the flywheel) comes down to replacing the coil (aka magneto). Here you need to choose a spare part with the same markings as on your saw, even if it fits the seat. The ignition timing may not match.

3. Clutch repair. There is an unspoken rule: after replacing 2 saw chains, the tire should be replaced, and after replacing 2 tires, the clutch should be replaced. Of course, this is not a dogma, and in each individual case it is worth checking the functionality of the unit before changing it, but you can carry out the procedure for replacing the clutch (as well as the chain or tire) yourself.

It's easy to do:

  • remove the tire;
  • fix the piston through the spark plug hole;
  • unscrew the clutch;
  • install the new one by performing the steps in reverse order.

Evaluation parameters and scope of application

The tool's high center of gravity, narrow configuration and flat body bottom contribute to the slow accumulation of fatigue. The user rating obtained during the survey is evidence of the high reliability, power and versatility of the model.

For a 10-point scale, the average was 8.3.

The characteristics of the tool determine its use in a wide range of household works, including:

  • firewood preparation;
  • preparation for installation of construction timber;
  • formation of crowns of ornamental and fruit trees;
  • independent production of wooden items for interior design and landscape design.

The saw successfully copes with single-pass, standard, longitudinal and diagonal sawing of hardwood with a diameter of up to 30 cm. The compact design makes it possible to work in hard-to-reach places, which is especially valued in construction technologies.

Which is the best product to buy?

The question arises when there is a need to cut wood, but there is not enough experience and knowledge. Experts recommend following these tips:

  1. Understand how much work needs to be done and what kind of material you will have to deal with. For cross cutting, a chisel tool is selected, for longitudinal cutting, a chipper tool is used.
  2. Understand the characteristics of a chainsaw, especially bar length and pitch. There is no point in choosing a specific brand; this indicator is not fundamental.

Where to buy the unit, everyone chooses independently. It is best to visit specialized outlets, talk with a sales manager, decide on the package, hold the tool in your hands, and ask the price. There is an option to order products online in an online store. The main thing is not to encounter counterfeit. This is the advantage of a branded store, where there is a minimal likelihood of purchasing a low-quality Chinese product instead of a branded product.

Carburetor adjustment

The factory settings of the fuel equipment bring the engine to operating modes that are optimal in terms of power and efficiency.

The need for additional correction arises when switching the tool to summer or winter operating modes, when traction characteristics decrease or the fuel octane number changes.

  • Following the instructions in the instructions, you can adjust the carburetor yourself. To do this, after warming up the engine, you need to tighten the quality screw all the way and unscrew it 4.5 turns.
  • If the chain moves while the engine is running, you must use the services of a service center specialist.
  • If, with the fuel equipment adjusted, the engine does not start or starts and stalls, you should make sure that there is gasoline in the supply tank, that the spark plug is in good condition, and that the air intake filter is clean.
  • The engine stalls under load - the cause may be a lean mixture due to a clogged main jet.

Traction characteristics and stability of engine operating conditions are largely dependent on the quality of fuel and engine oil. Old gasoline or gasoline stored for a long time in a plastic canister can cause a number of characteristic failures and malfunctions.

DIY repair

The Husqvarna 137 is a relatively old chainsaw and many examples already require repairs: from basic adjustment or replacement of the carburetor to piston repair. To perform such complex work, you need to contact a specialized service center. However, if you have the desire and experience in repairing complex equipment, you can try to cope with certain malfunctions yourself.

For effective repairs, you will need some skills and tips; we recommend that you learn them from the videos presented.

You should start with disassembly and assembly; this is the main thing you need to know when repairing the Husqvarna 137 chainsaw with your own hands. When making their saws, the Swedes try to do everything so that their saws are difficult to repair anywhere other than a specialized service.

The second and most popular is adjusting the carburetor of the Husqvarna 137 chainsaw. This process is no different from adjusting the carburetors on other Husqvarna AB saws. All adjustments are made using 3 screws. We recommend watching in detail how to adjust the carburetor of the Husqvarna 137 chainsaw, which screw to turn, in which direction and how many revolutions.

Headset

Replacement equipment consists of a 15-inch guide bar and 0.325-inch pitch chain driven by a drive sprocket. The chain tension is adjusted using a special device.

Cooling and lubrication of the chain is realized by dosed supply of oil to the working area. Oil is supplied to the pump inlet from an internal reservoir with a volume of 200 ml.

Replacing a worn tire-chain set is not technically difficult. In order to independently remove the chain drive sprocket, you must use the universal key included in the factory kit.

The use of recommended chain oils has a positive effect on the efficiency and durability of removable equipment as a whole.

Features of use

Features of using the Husqvarna chainsaw:

  • carefully read the operating instructions for the chainsaw;
  • Perform switching on and off, idling, refueling and other technical procedures only according to the instructions;
  • do not install third-party equipment on a Husqvarna chainsaw - use original spare parts and components;
  • to avoid kickback from the chainsaw, do not cut several logs at once, do not turn the saw sideways while finishing the cut;
  • the moving chain of the Husqvarna chainsaw should not come into contact with the end part of the guide bar with foreign objects;
  • Stand slightly to the left of the saw, and not directly behind the cutting part and body - this will reduce the likelihood of kickback and dangerous situations.

Rules for safe handling of a Husqvarna chainsaw:

  • When transporting or carrying a Husqvarna chainsaw, remove the wire from the spark plug to avoid contact and uncontrolled activation of the tool;
  • Only the owner or an adult who is familiar with the rules for the safe operation of the device is allowed to work with a chainsaw;
  • any actions with the Husqvarna chainsaw should be performed in protective equipment, especially your hands should be protected - use the shield included in the kit;
  • It is also necessary to wear special gloves on your hands for handling chain saws;
  • The operator's feet must be wearing tight, closed-toed shoes and protective shields;
  • The operator’s face also needs to be protected from exposure to sawdust and uncontrolled kickback of the chainsaw - wear a protective mask and tight-fitting clothing, protect your ears with sound-cancelling headphones;
  • hold the Husqvarna chainsaw with both hands; it is forbidden to hold a running saw with one hand;
  • Carry out timely maintenance, repairs, inspect the saw for damage and malfunctions, and replace worn components;
  • check the condition of the fastenings of the Husqvarna chainsaw before each work; if the fastening is loose, secure it and only then start working;
  • You should handle not only the device, but also the fuel carefully - do not smoke near the saw or the refueling or fuel mixing area.

Benefits of a chainsaw

  • despite the budget cost, the design of the tool is identical in many respects to semi-professional class models;
  • the saw differs from prototypes in the optimal ratio of power, weight and overall dimensions;
  • the instrument is characterized by modern ergonomics of the body, handles, placement of main and auxiliary controls;
  • high-quality and durable materials were used to manufacture critical parts and systems;
  • the durability of the engine crank assembly has been increased by the use of special processing technologies and the application of durable wear-resistant coatings;
  • The presence of a reliable and high-speed emergency brake virtually eliminates the possibility of injury to the operator in the event of a chain jump, kickback, or other unusual situations.

Modifications

Husqvarna 365 has only one modification - Husqvarna 365h.

This is a special version of the 365 chainsaw, which is designed for felling trees in deep snow. Externally, the 365 and 365H are very different, because the latter has high handles. Main features of the 365H model:

  • high handles, which have a built-in tank and engine controls, allow you to work with a chainsaw while standing and without bending down;
  • handle rotation function. This option is used when felling, in order to change the location of the tire in space;
  • Also, this Husqvarna model has all the technical features of the 365 SP model.

The technical characteristics of the chainsaw for working in deep snow fully correspond to the characteristics of the 365th model, which cannot be said about the cost, which is almost twice the cost of the base model.

365 SP and saw 365, these are the same tool, it’s just that the manufacturer indicates the SP marking, which means special, only on a metal nameplate located on the crankcase next to the oil tank cover, and on the starter sticker it simply says 365. For this reason, problems arise similar misconceptions.

Owner reviews

I am a four year owner of a used 137. I can’t say anything bad; the chainsaw is reliable, productive and versatile in all respects. There are no problems with spare parts, tires and chains for any price. I earn money for gasoline from neighbors and acquaintances by dumping relatively small trees and sawing firewood. The machine is low-cost to operate, the oils are expensive, but you can save a little on chain lubrication. Towards the end of each chain’s life, I fill it with a mixture of diesel oil and a spindle that is uniform in density. Zhenya

In practice, I compared the work of the Shtil 180 and the Husqvarna model 137. Despite the small remaining service life, both machines deserve the highest rating. In my opinion, Husqvarna is more flexible, the grip is comfortable and reliable. An engine with stable traction in summer and winter, but sensitive to fuel quality and precise dosage of engine oil. I would love to buy a new device, but this model is no longer for sale. They advise me to buy the next model 236, but I’m afraid to buy a fake, especially since in the practice of my friends such cases are not uncommon. Vasily Viktorovich

I heard a lot of good things about the survivability and reliability of the Husqvarna 137 model of motor saws, so there were no doubts when purchasing its improved version 137e. The machine pleased us with its light weight, effective operation of the vibration compensator and easy start system. After about 20 hours of operating time, a leak opened in the oil pump area, the equipment was under warranty, I had to take it to a service center. It turns out that all that was needed was to tighten the fasteners. In all other respects, the saw is impeccable; in 5 years of operation there has not been a single serious failure. Valery Nikolaevich

Husqvarna 142 in operation

We prepared the fuel mixture on the basis of AI 92 gasoline and Husqvarna HP branded two-stroke oil in a ratio of 50 to 1. It is interesting to note here that if oil added in the specified ratio is not available, the manufacturer allows the short-term use of high-quality oil diluted with gasoline in the ratio 33 to 1.

We operated the Husqvarna 142 for about an hour. It is ideal as a household chainsaw: almost complete absence of vibrations in the hands, a completely bearable noise level and, most importantly, excellent cutting abilities. Fresh pine and dry birch trunks with a diameter of 26 cm were repeatedly sawed in an average of 7 s each. The dry oak yielded a little more slowly; It took approximately 14 seconds to cut a log with a diameter of 24 cm. The cutting speeds are slightly lower than those of the professional chainsaws that we tested, but these are saws of a different order of cost. Husqvarna 142 is not afraid of working at full power; high speeds are even recommended in the instructions. The brake works perfectly - the chain stops instantly.

Then an analysis was made of reviews from Husqvarna 142 owners on three specialized forums

We took into account only those publications whose authors have been registered for a long time and do not use a chainsaw professionally, i.e. not every day for several years. The results of the analysis were not surprising and are briefly as follows: the piston group is reliable, the tire is strong, the saw is comfortable and unpretentious to fuel

Failures occur infrequently, but are caused by the deadline for replacing consumables or errors in preparing the fuel mixture
