Brake valve: principle of operation and types of brake valves in vehicles

What does a faucet consist of?

Traditionally, a trailer brake control valve is necessary to control the semitrailer's own brakes when the tractor's brake system is activated. That is, when the driver in the car presses the brake pedal, this unit receives a signal and sends a similar command to all wheels of the towbar.

The trailer brake control valve moves recycled air from the main source to other consuming elements, operating together or separately.

Consists of elements:

  • twin control valves;
  • similar single element;
  • two heads (connecting).

Commands are sent to both outlet openings to increase the pressure of the main part, and the opposite effect is applied to a similar opening.

Depending on the complexity of the part and the manufacturer, it can cost from 4-5 to 30 thousand rubles.

Visual diagram of the device

The faucet design is complemented by a main valve with 3 sections and two pistons - large and small. The middle one has a release valve capable of lifting the spring, directing it to the landing socket. In addition to the main element, the faucet has:

  • discharge outlet diaphragm;
  • stock;
  • adjusting screw.

There are several pistons at the top, and the exhaust valve is separate from the seating area.

Design parameters

Let's consider the principle of operation of the device and its design features. The main task of the unit is to control the brakes on the connected trailer. Activation occurs when the pressure in the main pipeline drops below the minimum permissible level.

In practice, there are two types of construction: single-wire and two-wire. Both options have common elements that are typical for all types of cranes:

  • a pair of valves;
  • set of connection heads;
  • control pair valve;
  • single control valve.

The valves responsible for manipulating the brake system send a compressed gas volume to system consumers from the intake source. The work of consumers can occur either independently from one another or in parallel. A signal indicating an increase in pressure in the system is sent to both outputs, and the opposite signal is sent to one analogue, which affects the decrease in pressure when bleeding air using a manual switch.

Trailer brake control valve: principle of operation, connection

The air valve on the semi-trailer starts and controls the braking process, performing automatic control in case of emergency situations. For example, when the pressure inside the system has decreased.

Brake valve

Control valve

A structural element of the crane that sends commands to the brake drive. Consists of 4 interconnected sections:

  • 2 pistons of different sizes with springs;
  • discharge openings through which air passes;
  • cylindrical rod - rod;
  • pressure regulating screw.

Crane operating diagram:

  1. The starting (stationary) position of the brake pedal, air pressure mechanically locks the piston and rod in place. Both valves are closed, the intake valve and the control valve next to it.
  2. When the pedal is pressed, air enters the line, it acts on the piston, compressing the spring, which then pushes the rod, which activates the TPP.
  3. During the release period, the air is released, straightening the spring. The wheels are freed, the car moves on.

When changing the position, the adjusting screw will be set to 20-100 kPa - the air compression level.

Most models from well-known manufacturers are also responsible for turning on the brake lights. Thus, as soon as braking begins, the corresponding LEDs light up.

Single valve

Holds air inside the brake mechanism when the pressure of the connecting air ducts decreases. Regulates the pressure at the receiver. If it decreases to a critical point, the device automatically shuts off the air flow to the PP release valve.

Isolation valve

A mechanism for blocking air flows from a truck tractor along a highway. If the valve handle “looks” at the air duct, then the system is open. The handle is raised perpendicular to its axis - the TPP is blocked from the TGA. This means you can unhook the trailer from the tractor.

Device diagram

Details in the diagram above:

  • “a” is an inactive device;
  • “b” - open trailer handbrake valve;
  • “1” - access to the air cylinder control valve itself using a single valve;
  • “II” - main output of the brake system;
  • “III”—atmospheric input;
  • “1” - spring mechanism;
  • “2” - valve;
  • “3” - diaphragm and rod;
  • “4” — return spring;
  • "5" - pusher.

They form a single structure.

Palm connection heads

They provide a hermetically sealed connection between the air line of the truck and the trailer at the time of connection. Most Palm parts are flanged valveless connections. With rubber gaskets at the joints.

Fixation occurs when the heads are inserted into one another. Then the device begins to rotate relative to the other, after which the protrusion of the inserted part fits into the hole of the female one.

How the system works when braking

A single-line system is most often used for tractors with a single line. At the same time, it simultaneously controls and regulates the energy supply.

The trailer brake valve consists of:

  • piston;
  • diaphragms;
  • air exchange valves.

Before driving, the driver starts the engine, filling the system with air. As soon as the pressure level reaches 0.5 MPa, the driver will receive a notification - special lights will go out.

When the parking brake is released, which will also be indicated by the extinguished lamp, you can drive.

When releasing the truck's brakes:

  • foot brake with handbrake in neutral position;
  • the handles of the disconnect valves are perpendicular (90 degrees) to the axis;
  • pressure indicators within 0.7 - 0.75 MPa in the receiver.

As soon as the driver presses the brake pedal of the tractor:

  1. The trailer's air valve, which consists of two interconnected sections, is activated.
  2. The level of pressure in the brake chambers of the car and one of the lines of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry increases.
  3. If a two-wire drive is installed, the PTC valve on the semi-trailer is activated.
  4. The single-drive system, on the contrary, releases air from the PP line, it acts on the brake valve, thus stopping the semi-trailer.

Two-wire, respectively, is equipped with 2 lines, where one will be the control line, and the second will be responsible for the energy supply. There is no need to install a mechanism of this type on tractors for passenger cars; they make do with single-wire models.

The structure is located below, under the bottom of the semi-trailer.

Types of design and operation of the brake valve

There are several types of brake system with trailer control valve:

  • Hydraulic - a special fluid is released when the movement slows down, it activates the mechanism.
  • Electric - braking is carried out in a non-contact manner; magnets that interact with each other are connected.
  • Friction - the friction force is activated, the brake mechanisms interact closely with each other.
  • Motor - stopping the vehicle is achieved by reducing the engine speed.
  • Pneumatic - brakes operate using air currents.

The latter type of system has been installed on semi-trailers for a long time.

END VALVE is... What is an END VALVE?

END VALVE END VALVE
is a shut-off valve of the brake line, used to shut it off at the ends of the train, in the middle or in any part of it (when disconnected). The KK is installed at both ends of each car and at the locomotive. A distinctive feature of the condenser is that when it is closed, it discharges through special side openings from the flexible sleeve of the main line; This makes it easier to separate the hoses in the intercar space of the train when uncoupling it.

How to exit a parking lot in reverse

The trailer control crane, regardless of its design, as well as the manufacturer, has weak points:

  • after connecting the parts, you barely start the system, everything works on the tractor, but not on the trailer, or the opposite situation;
  • the air inside the brake chamber is poisoned;
  • Air begins to escape from the head when braking;
  • when the brakes are released, the wheels of the tractor react, but the wheels of the trailer do not;
  • non-release, jamming.

Models from the Schmitz company have increased play and gaps in the coupling mechanism, and oil leaks from pneumatic cylinders. Krone designs suffer from piston cycling at the wheel cylinder or clogging of air lines.

It is important to undergo regular technical inspection by a specialist or monitor the condition of the parts yourself. After all, brake malfunctions on the road are dangerous; the driver runs the risk of causing an accident.

Features of a single-wire system

One of the main differences between a single-wire system and a two-wire analogue is the presence in the design of a control valve, a disconnecting element and an L-shaped head. One line performs control functions and is used for make-up. The valve is in demand as a regulator that helps bring pressure to atmospheric pressure. If the number of Pascals rapidly decreases, the intensity of braking increases.

In addition to the indicated parts, the system contains a pusher with a membrane, as well as valves (exhaust and inlet), and a stepped piston. To connect them, a special rod is provided in the design. A lower piston is also integrated into the system.
