Place of TGS trucks in MAN's assortment
According to their carrying capacity, MAN trucks are divided into the following series: TGA (basic), TGS and TGX (heavy-duty), TGM (medium-duty), TGL (light-duty). The gross weight of TGS series trucks ranges from 18 to 41 tons. There are differences in wheel formulas. These are truck tractors with wheel formulas 4x2, 6x4, 8x4, 8x6. And also - all-wheel drive options 4x4, 6x6, 8x8. Accordingly, the number of axles that MAN TGS vehicles can have is two, three or four, with high loads on the front axle.
If the niche of MAN mainliners is occupied by the powerful and productive TGX, and the MAN TGM dominates in the middle weight, then the TGS series car has a number of unique characteristics that qualitatively distinguish it from the rest.
Distinctive features, areas of application
The power of TGS series engines varies from 350 to 440 horsepower. The suspension of trucks in this series comes in two types: spring or pneumatic, with the ability to adjust the height of the coupling devices. This series is also distinguished by disc brakes and a reinforced chassis. The most widely used truck tractors are 4x2 and 6x4 wheeled tractors - two- and three-axle vehicles with a total weight of =/- 20 tons. They are often used for cargo transportation of their distribution centers by various network trading companies. MAN TGS vehicles with a higher weight are widely used for transporting petroleum products by tanker trucks and construction materials in heavy special trailers.
MAN TGS trucks are effective partners for work not only on public roads, but also on difficult terrain on large construction sites that require frequent and fairly sophisticated maneuvering. The MAN TGS concept represents the compactness of the truck's external dimensions and the ability to set a maximum body length. With a cabin width of 2.3 meters, the truck is optimally suited for distribution of goods, short-distance transport, as well as for use on construction sites and in the utility sector. The degree of versatility of application is quite high. Therefore, a wide number of not only truck tractors, but also various vehicles, including dump trucks and special equipment (concrete mixers, etc.) are sold on the MAN TGS chassis.
Technical equipment MAN TGS 33.440 6×4 BBS.WW
TGS truck tractors, for use as part of a road train, with a 6x4 wheelbase, have increased load capacity and can consistently reduce the cost of freight transport. MAN TGS 33.440 6×4 BBS.WW: this truck tractor has a maximum permitted weight of thirty-three tons and is intended for interregional and intraregional routes as part of a road train.
Designation MAN TGS 33.440 6x4 BBS. WW, according to the general German classification common to MAN and Mercedes-Benz trucks, 33.440 means the gross weight of the vehicle and the power of its engine in horsepower. The letters “WW” indicate possible sales markets, that is, exports throughout the world (World Wide), except the European Union. First of all, this is due to the design of the engine - it complies with Euro-3...4...5 standards, and not currently required in the countries of the continent Euro-6.
The car itself is MAN TGS 33.440 6x4 BBS. WW is positioned as a “heavy construction” (and also “employed in a variety of city road work”) worker. Moreover, manufacturers specifically place special emphasis on the fact that this tractor is not intended for European favorable roads and conditions, but for countries with any difficult conditions. This is obvious from the fact that this model is produced without exhaust treatment systems using the Ad Blue urea reagent, which is critical to the quality of diesel fuel.
The fifth wheel of the tractor of this model can be adjusted in two positions. The electronically controlled braking system (EBS) installed on production vehicles of the MAN TGS family ensures consistently high operating reliability. An optional anti-skid stabilization system (ESP) is also installed, which prevents possible skidding, and thereby protects the driver and the cargo being transported. The electronically controlled ECAS air suspension ensures a uniform level of movement, regardless of the degree of load.
The bumper and body of MAN tractor units in the TGS category are themselves streamlined. There are also air intakes in the bumper part, which significantly increases the total area of the space. The truck looks like an aggressive car, which is based, among other things, on the presence of a black fiberglass panel in the body.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIR AND OPERATION OF SPECIAL TRUCKS.
A truck, a modification of a truck tractor, designed for transporting goods over long distances, coupled with a semi-trailer, a model called TGS 33.440, is produced by a German engineering plant in the city of Munich. This truck is produced by a plant called MAN. This model is special in its technical characteristics, as it is one of the most powerful models. This car can be moved as part of a road train, with a total weight of ninety tons.
The truck tractor model, called TGS 33.440, has a rear-wheel drive system. The car has a layout with three axles, two rear axles are driven. These bridges form the so-called cargo trolley. The car is equipped with a suspension system that has a simple design and is equipped with a standard spring system.
Cars of this model are equipped with diesel engines that have a turbocharging system. The engine has an in-line and six-cylinder layout. It has the ability to generate power up to 440 horsepower. Also, this diesel engine is capable of spinning up, producing a torque of 2100 Newtons per meter. The purity class of exhaust gases from this power unit is rated according to the Euro standard, with a rating of four. The gearbox has sixteen steps. When the semi-trailer, which is attached to a truck tractor, is fully loaded, the car can accelerate and maintain a speed of 90 kilometers per hour.
The load capacity of this truck tractor is approximately 80 tons, with the weight of the tractor itself being 10 tons. In total, the maximum weight of a road train can reach ninety tons. The steering has a hydraulic power steering system. The brake system is electrically controlled. There is also a special ABS system; disc brakes are installed on the wheels.
The cabin of this truck, a tractor-trailer type, has a medium-height roof. In the sleeping area of the cabin of this car, there is room for one person to rest, as there is one bed. The cabin has two seats, electronic windows, a cabin hatch that opens from a special mechanical drive, there is also a central locking system, and an audio system. Also, the car cabin has climate control.
Suspension and chassis
Front suspension - parabolic springs; rear suspension – pneumatic. The stabilizer is present on the front axle of the truck, and there are also stabilizers on both rear axles. An important new feature of the MAN TGS 33.440 6×4 BBS model. WW, like all modern MAN trucks, have hypoid axles. In addition to the smooth running and quiet operation of the vehicle, the use of this type of axle helps reduce fuel consumption. This truck tractor also has a hydraulic drive, which improves traction and maneuverability both on and off the road.
Suspension can be of several types, because the car is used in quite different conditions. For construction work, a two-axle trolley design with fully air suspension is used. In other cases, a leaf spring type with parabolic springs is possible. The air suspension is fully electronically controlled, which allows you to install additional equipment on the frame with high precision.
Suspension, steering and brakes MAN TGS 6×4
The three-axle car is assembled on a frame of side members made of high-strength steel. The cabin is attached to it with spring shock absorbers. Both front and rear, the suspension is represented by a dependent structure assembled from parabola-shaped springs and equipped with anti-roll bars. If desired, the car can be equipped with an air suspension system. Moreover, various combinations of it with a traditional spring system are possible.
The steering system is represented by a standard mechanism with a hydraulic booster. The steering column is equipped with a tilt angle adjustment mechanism. Functional buttons are mounted on the “wheel” itself, making it easier to control and increasing the comfort when driving the MAN TGS 6×4.
A dual-circuit hydraulic design with a brake center is responsible for braking. All wheels have disc mechanisms, which are activated at the behest of the electronic braking system. The car is equipped with anti-slip and anti-lock mechanisms.
Cabins of MAN trucks and their use on TGS vehicles
In total, MAN trucks can be equipped with six standard cab sizes. Namely: C, M, L, LX, XLX and XXL. Specifically, the MAN TGS family of vehicles uses three types of cabs:
- type M – compact intra-city cabin without a sleeping place;
- type L – extended city cab with a compact berth;
- type LX – main cabin, with a high ceiling and a spacious sleeping area.
Even the simplest M cabin in terms of equipment and available space can provide the driver with working conditions that meet modern concepts of comfort.
The cabin is equipped with a heater and a mechanical lifting hatch. The steering column is equipped with height adjustments. There is an additional mirror for a better view of the front of the truck; modern lighting and electrical equipment. However, other standard cabin sizes for this series are also available, but the demand for them is much less. If the length of the cabin of this model is identical to the cabins of the “heavyweight flagships” TGX, then the width is 20 cm narrower. The radiator grille is additionally protected by a mesh from the ingress of gravel and insects. There are three steps leading into the cabin, and there are comfortable handrails.
The driver's seat and the cabin itself are equipped with air suspension, while the passenger seat has a rigid fixation. The cabin interior can be described as simple and elegant, yet satisfying the basic working conditions. The interior decoration contains not only plastic and fabrics, but also metal decorative elements. There are many functional buttons and adjustments on the steering wheel, dashboard and window sides. There are also convenient stands for a coffee cup and telephone; drawers for all kinds of personal items.
The dimensions of the MAN TGS are compact, so the size of the berth in the L-type cab cannot be called too luxurious: 2050 x 750 mm. Under the shelf there is a special spacious drawer for working tools. This is a good solution - access to this box is guaranteed from outside the cabin. The cabin insulates very well from noise and vibration and has excellent aerodynamic parameters, which means it saves fuel.
Cabin interior
Three types of cabins are installed on the tractor. The smallest of them is the “M” series model for short-haul and distribution transport. In its basic configuration, it has two seats for the driver and passenger. If necessary, the copy is equipped with a chair for another travel companion and a folding berth. The small dimensions of the cabin increase the maneuverability of the entire vehicle.
The “L” series model can be equipped with a tractor with a comfortable workplace for two drivers. This solution is already better suited for particularly long-distance transportation. Inside the MAN TGS 6×4 cabin there is a comfortable sleeping place. However, there is not so much free space and people will experience discomfort from the low ceiling.
The LX cabin is the best option for long trips. It is equipped with two seats and a comfortable berth. When you lie down in such a bed, you get even more than a meter of free space above you. The abundance of freedom under the driver’s feet and above his head is also pleasing.
The interior design of the TGS cabin always remains approximately the same, regardless of its type. The interior is made in light gray and beige tones and does not put pressure on the eyes. Under the driver’s right hand there is a convenient glove compartment for change and snacks. You can reach it even from outside. The audio system is located on the ledge of the front panel and does not force you to reach for it. Three wide steps lead into the cabin of the MAN TGS 6×4.
The driver's seat is also pleasing. It is equipped with air suspension and dampens any vibrations. The armrests and headrest help you relax during a long, monotonous trip, and with a set of seat position settings, every driver will feel comfortable.

Operation of MAN TGS 33.440 6x4 BBS. WW: owner reviews
Many of those who have been involved in cargo transportation in Russia for many years choose MAN vehicles, speaking of them as the optimal business tool for business in terms of combination of quality, price and cost of vehicle ownership. The majority of heavy-duty vehicles in the fleet of the largest Russian retailer are MAN TGS (only with a 4x2 wheel arrangement, not 6x4). Since the TGS series is still relatively young (produced since 2007), many people involved in cargo transportation have switched to MAN TGS from MAN TGA vehicles. According to them, this car is “similar to the previous model, only newer in all respects and the past problems have been corrected.” The impressions are good, although the leaf front suspension is generally stiff, but it is quiet and responsive. L-cabins, due to their size, do not shake like large cabs. It sometimes wobbles, so additional cushioning won't hurt.
The salon is very well equipped for comfortable work. It's cozy and warm. There is a lot of functionality - buttons on the steering wheel, on the doors - everything is at hand, good rubberized drawers are provided on top for things. The electronics are very reliable and not at all capricious. The engines are said to be quite sensitive to the quality of diesel fuel, as a result of which, when using questionable fuel, the injectors fly and the filters become clogged. The fuel system is quite fragile. Otherwise, the car is excellently suited to work on any, even the worst roads, and can withstand any careless driving. There are good service centers in almost all regions of Russia - there are no problems with repairs. In general, professionals like the machine; it is designed and made in German: exceptionally well and of high quality.
