The Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant produced the T 170 bulldozer from 1988 to 2002. But even today, bulldozers of this brand work flawlessly on construction sites in our country. This is an industrial heavy tracked tractor of traction class 10 with general and special purposes, designed to work in all climatic zones.
Initially, the design was based on the design principle of the T 130 tractor, but was supplemented by the ability to install a larger number of attachments and varieties of caterpillar tracks, the power of the power unit was increased, and the driver’s working conditions became more comfortable.
T 170 has undeniable advantages:
- simple and reliable assembly;
- power and high maneuverability;
- low cost.
Based on the ChTZ T 170 bulldozer, over the course of 14 years the plant produced more than 70 types of heavy agricultural equipment, which was present at all major construction sites and farm facilities of that time.
Considering this fact, there was an urgent need for maintenance. Thus, an additional complex “Uralremtrak” was created, which carried out repairs and maintenance of all types of equipment based on the T 170. Both enterprises are still operating today.
Tractor T-130
This model is an improved modernization of the classic T-100 produced by the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant - Uraltrak. The history of the tracked T-130 begins in 1960. This tractor is equipped with an improved transmission and belongs to traction class 6. The main areas of application of the T-130 include bulldozing, deep plowing of virgin lands, and off-road transportation of heavy loads. This machine was also used for driving piles and laying pipes.
Tractor T-130
The distinctive characteristics of the T-130 crawler tractor are the versatility of spare parts, low cost (compared to other taxes) and simplicity of design. Despite its almost retirement age (the last model was released in 1988) and long history, the T-130 is still found on construction sites.
Advantages and disadvantages
This technique cannot be completely ideal; there will always be some disadvantages. They get to know each other at work.
Pros:
- high cross-country ability due to the chassis and agrotechnical ground clearance of 415 mm;
- the T-170 tractor can be used profitably in any field of activity - versatility;
- reliability due to high-quality elements and simplicity of design;
- in case of breakdowns, there will always be spare parts, plus the work itself can be easily done independently;
- for a tractor of this level it is economical;
- cabin vibration isolation;
- a huge number of modifications;
- collapsible design for delivery of equipment (some consider it a minus).
In fact, these are the most basic advantages; there are a bunch of other little things, but there is no point in listing them. Now let's look at the cons:
- the use of friction clutches from their predecessor, they are not designed for such loads and often need to be replaced;
- the complexity of the steering design, this also applies to its repair. In this it loses to its competitors;
- low level of operator comfort.

Engine
The T-130 tractor is equipped with a four-stroke diesel engine D-160 with 140 horsepower and turbocharging. The weight of the motor is evenly distributed on the frame, which makes the machine more resistant to loads.
Engine design D-160
The main engine is started with the help of an auxiliary gasoline engine. This design solution made it easier to start the engine at subzero temperatures. The motor of the T130 crawler tractor is water-cooled with a forced centrifugal pump.
Bulldozer b-170
The B-170 bulldozer was produced at the Chelyabinsk Transport Plant from 1988 to 2002. The B-170 refers to a whole range of bulldozers and tractors of the 10th traction class produced by the ChTZ plant. The bulldozer is based on the T-170 industrial tractor, so the technical characteristics of the B-170 are also at a high level. Over the 14 years during which the bulldozer was produced, it proved itself only on the positive side. This bulldozer has high maintainability and is capable of working even in the harshest places in our country. There are practically no analogues on the domestic market of special equipment. Competition comes only from foreign-made bulldozers, but the price of the b-170 bulldozer is significantly lower than that of foreign analogues.
T-170 tractors and B-170 bulldozers were produced at ChTZ from 1988 to 2002 |
The maintainability of the bulldozer is due to the fact that the B-170 was developed as a result of modernizing the T-130 tractor, increasing engine power to 170, and then to 180 hp, and at the same time reducing specific fuel consumption. The gear ratio of the final drive of the B-170 bulldozer was increased by 1.5 times, increasing the maximum traction force and significantly unloading the power transmission, the service life of the T-170 bulldozer before the first major overhaul increased to 8, and then to 10 thousand engine hours, technical characteristics b- 170 met all international standards.
User manual
The rules for caring for the T-130 bulldozer and the features of its use are described in the instructions for use. The following are excerpts from the rules for maintenance and correction of major faults.
Maintenance
T-130 crawler tractors are mainly used in difficult conditions and with heavy loads. In order for the equipment to last as long as possible and effectively, it is necessary to carry out maintenance in accordance with the instructions for use.
Transmission oil must be replaced once a year, before starting operation or after 1000 operating hours.
Before each departure, it is necessary to check the availability and sufficient quantity of fuel, check the operation of the brake and steering systems, and inspect the car for unnatural deformation or excessive wear of any parts.
Oil M-10G2k Oil M-10DM
The engine oil should be changed after 500 hours of operation. In summer it is recommended to use M-10G2k, in winter M-10DM.
Basic malfunctions and ways to eliminate them
The most vulnerable point in the T-130 tractor is the tracks. They provide the opportunity to move on heavy soils, so they can withstand enormous loads. Therefore, it is periodically necessary to inspect and tighten the track links.
Many owners complain that the gearbox does not lock, in which case the following steps must be taken:
- Lubricate accessible mechanisms with lubricant;
- Pour oil into the gearbox;
- Adjust the position of the clutch.
If the engine does not start, the following reasons could lead to this:
- Diesel shortage;
- Fuel or air filters are clogged;
- Problems with the starting or fuel supply system;
- Incorrect setting of the fuel mixture in the carburetor;
- Air entering the fuel system.
Advantages with disadvantages
The following indicators should be noted as advantages of the unit:
- machine versatility;
- performance in any climate;
- long service life;
- repair accessibility;
- Ease of Management;
- purchasing availability.
At the same time, it is worth mentioning the disadvantages inherent in this tractor:
- Transportation is only permissible with the additional equipment removed.
- Poor sound insulation.
- Quick erase of the friction clutch.
This model is distinguished by an optimal balance of quality and cost parameters, which is noted in the reviews of the owners.
Attachments
The set of attachments on the tractor is hydraulic, separate and modular. It is designed to perform the necessary work using two types of attachments: rear and front (pendulum or rigid). The hydraulic system of a separate-aggregate type serves the functioning of a trailed or mounted device.
A bulldozer blade of one of two types (2.5 or 3.2 m wide) is attached to the front linkage. Various uprooters or rippers, systems for driving piles or laying pipes, and equipment for moving timber are attached to the rear linkage. The clean version of the T-130 has proven itself positively when working in the field: it is convenient for them to plow virgin, previously uncultivated lands.
At the buyer’s request, the machines are equipped with any of the possible attachments: a straight or hemispherical blade, a ripper with one or several teeth. The passport parameters of the attachments are summarized in the table:
Bucket option | Hemispherical | Straight |

Reviews
Many ChTZ-130 users share their experience in operating this equipment. They leave reviews from bulldozer owners on specialized forums, highlighting the features of the machine and its quality. If we synthesize these records, we get the following summary characterizing the unit from the consumer's point of view:
- Installation is convenient due to the availability of spare parts in retail chains, so its repair is not too complicated.
- The unit causes virtually no problems when refueling it even with low-quality domestic diesel fuel.
- The technical characteristics of this tractor model allow it to be used effectively in the construction or resource-extracting industries.
- The machine has a spacious cabin, the driver is able to clearly view the work area. The body is equipped with lighting devices, which are sufficient for good visibility at night or in bad weather conditions.
- Almost all consumers cite a weak gearbox as a disadvantage, which only worsens the car’s handling, seriously reducing its overall efficiency.
- The weight of the bulldozer is quite significant, and users have similar comments about the components. Because of this, without the use of lifting devices, quite a lot of problems arise when trying to replace components of the chassis system or power equipment.
- An important problem of the power plant is its inability to run idle for a long time. When the engine “rumbles” at idle for a long period of time, the turbine soon begins to leak oil and therefore breaks down. The reason is the virtual absence of oil entering the engine, which is necessary to lubricate the pistons. The turbine operates without oil, the wear of its parts increases, which provokes breakdown.
- Also among the significant disadvantages are bolted track shoes. The fasteners periodically become loose, which is why it is necessary to constantly monitor them, check the integrity of the shoes, and tighten them.
- During the Soviet Union, operating a tractor was a pleasure, since diesel fuel cost almost nothing. The situation is completely different now, when diesel fuel is very expensive. Because of this, modern equipment owners note the greater productivity of this machine, but also its high fuel consumption. In order to use the unit profitably, it is necessary to provide it with significant volumes of work. When you compare this model with the DT-75, you immediately notice that the T-130 is much more productive and efficient, but consumes twice as much diesel fuel. Because of this, it must be used on large construction sites: when constructing dams, cleaning large sites, creating road junctions, laying process pipelines.
The tractor is distinguished by excellent technical parameters, thanks to which it is even now successfully used in many public utilities and construction organizations.
Transmission
The tractor is equipped with a mechanical or hydromechanical transmission system with eight stages. It has a clutch with four discs that is permanently closed to transmit rotation. Torque is transmitted by a gearbox with four shafts.
The unit is equipped with a two-stage final drive, multi-disc dry clutches, and a constantly meshed bevel gear. The presence of four shafts in the gearbox allows you to engage eight forward and four reverse gears. Maximum thrust is achieved at a speed of 2.6 km/h and has a value of 128.2 kN.
Price
It is impossible to buy a new bulldozer of this modification now, since its production was discontinued three decades ago. But the secondary market offers a wide selection of such used special equipment.
A used car will cost a needy consumer approximately 300–450 thousand Russian rubles. The final cost is influenced by the volume of operating hours, operational condition and year of manufacture of the unit.
