Do-it-yourself lawn mower - photos of options, drawings with instructions. Making from old tools and household appliances

Today, the market for electric and gasoline lawn mowers can provide a large number of different options and models. But in the case when there is no budget for a mower, and you don’t want to mow by hand, you can make a lawn mower with your own hands at home from scrap parts and materials. A do-it-yourself lawn mower will significantly save money, unlike factory-made analogues.

Advantages of a homemade lawn mower

The selection of ready-made lawn mowing devices is quite large, and the range is constantly updated thanks to the efforts of developers. However, building a machine yourself has a lot of obvious advantages:

  1. Cheapness. The financial costs of manufacturing a lawn mower are significantly less than purchasing a factory model. Real craftsmen can assemble a convenient clipper from very familiar materials at hand.
  2. The ability to independently prepare a drawing according to which the assembly will be carried out.
  3. Availability of consumables and parts. For example, to make a homemade lawn mower with your own hands, you will need the simplest set of tools and materials.
  4. A large collection of educational video lessons on how to make a lawn mower with your own hands.

Most of the plans for assembling the structure are freely available, which means that every garden owner has the opportunity to use ready-made diagrams.

Precautionary measures

When using this equipment at home, you should follow safety precautions. There are only two main dangers:

  1. Injury from knives.
  2. Electric shock.

For this reason, you can inspect the mower only when it is turned off, and before using the device, make sure that all points where electrical wires are connected are well insulated. Moreover, it is worth collecting all the debris on a flat area where you plan to work, so that it does not cause damage to the device and does not cause injury to a person. The production is described in the video tutorial.

Features of self-assembly

Before starting work and choosing a model, you should familiarize yourself with the assembly features and design.

Any lawn mower should have enough mobility to cut the lawn evenly. The classic design of a lawn mower has the following device:

  • Electric motor, if provided.
  • Gasoline tank for models of this series.
  • Parts for making a knife (for example, an excellent lawn mower can be made with your own hands from an angle grinder).
  • Housing for covering the drive or tank.
  • Protective guards or covers to protect the user's feet.
  • Knives or fishing line.
  • Wheels that will allow the structure to move evenly around the perimeter of the garden plot.
  • Container for collecting clipped grass. This aspect is quite important so that the cutting process remains comfortable and brings pleasure to the owner of the site.

Do not forget about such little things as on and off buttons, equipment for winding electrical wires, and holding handles. When working independently, it is important to observe the following assembly nuances:

  1. First of all, install the housing for the engine. This could be a panel removed from an old electrical appliance or a frame welded from a metal sheet.
  2. A hole is prepared for the electric motor. A separate area is prepared for installing a gasoline tank (all actions depend on the selected lawn mower model).
  3. A holding handle is welded to the frame; you can additionally think through the design for smooth rotation of the machine while cutting.
  4. A knife is attached to the electric motor shaft. A protective cover is installed over the blade.

The assembly is completed by installing the switch buttons and cord.

General characteristics

The lawn mower includes the following components:

  • herb collection;
  • body design;
  • wheel base;
  • motor.

When choosing a lawn mower, you should also pay attention to the accessories that are included in the kit. For example, some devices come with a knife and a special plug for collecting grass.

Motor

Lawn mowers can be battery-powered, gasoline-powered, or electric. The latter can operate from a household power supply and are intended for relatively small areas.

Battery-type models are equipped with a battery. Using such a device, you will have the opportunity to process an area of 6 acres with literally one battery charge.

Motor power indicators determine the speed of processing. As a rule, such equipment is equipped with engines from various manufacturers. American and Japanese engines are considered to be of the highest quality.

The low quality of Chinese-made engines is a banal and very common stereotype. Some Chinese manufacturers make engines according to the certificates of companies from Japan.

Wheels

Equipment of different prices is equipped with different wheels: needle or ball bearings, with bronze bushings, etc. The higher the price of a lawn mower, the more convenient it is to use, because such equipment is characterized by smooth running.

Also, ease of use depends on the diameter of the wheels. That is, the higher it is, the more comfortable it will be to use the equipment.

Collection of grass

There are three types of grass catchers:

  • plastic;
  • fabric;
  • combined.

Fabric-type grass collectors are very compact and lightweight, but they should be washed from time to time. When the cells of the mesh become clogged, an air lock is formed, which can easily cause the engine to overheat.

Plastic grass catchers are made using high quality materials. If a solid object (stone, wood chip, etc.) accidentally gets into the vessel, the body will not be damaged in any way. The plastic container is very easy to clean. Combined options are used in the most expensive devices. They combine the advantages of the varieties mentioned above.

By the way, you can make a lawn mower yourself.

Step by step construction of an electric lawn mower

One of the most popular models has an electric drive. This type of machine is convenient due to its cutting speed and automatic adjustment of the lawn cutting height.

However, the manufacture of an electric model will require compliance with all safety rules, including insulation of the wire and electric motor. Step-by-step construction of an electric lawn mower with your own hands:

  1. To begin assembly, you need to prepare any electric motor. It is absolutely not necessary to purchase a new device; for independent operation, a motor from an old device will work perfectly (you should not use motors from small household appliances, since they are not able to withstand the network load).
  2. A lawn mower blade can also be made by hand, especially if you have a lathe. To work, you will need very strong steel, which has advantages over traditional fishing line. The finished knife is a single structure on which several sharpened blades are soldered.
  3. A safer part (as an alternative to a knife) is a sharpened disc.

The housing for the mower can be welded from profile or metal pipes, or you can use an old frame from a baby stroller. For convenience, the handle should be corrugated so that your hands do not slip while mowing the lawn.

Particular attention is paid to the installation of blades and motor. This part of the housing should be protected as much as possible from external influences.

The cord is purchased at an electrical goods store and first lengthened so that work can be carried out over long distances.

You should also consider the possibility of folding and unfolding the cord, preventing the risk of damage to the cord during operation of the device. We must not forget to install a protective casing around the disc or blades so that the worker’s feet are not susceptible to injury.

Preparation

So, before you begin assembling the lawn mower, you will need to have the following items on hand:

  • frame materials;
  • wheels;
  • pens;
  • protective casing;
  • engine;
  • frame where all the parts will be attached;
  • knives;
  • control elements - RCD, switch, cable with plug for connection to a socket.

In addition, an important preparatory stage will be the creation of drawings and diagrams of the future structure. This will help ensure the correct location of all elements of the future structure and create the correct frame that can support the weight of all elements and will look beautiful from an aesthetic point of view.

You can also add various parts to the specified list, such as a chain or adapter, if the self-propelled mower is made from a drill or chainsaw.

Gasoline lawn mower

In practice, another model that runs on gasoline is popular. For self-assembly, you will also need a frame or housing, holding handles, a gas tank of sufficient volume, and a knife.

When assembling a gasoline lawn mower with your own hands, you should carefully consider the issue of safety, given the flammability of gasoline. All models in this series have greater power, allowing you to care for large areas of natural lawn.

Making and securing knives

The easiest to make yourself, reliable and efficient design is represented by a two-bladed horizontal knife, or “propeller”. For a solid cutter, it is necessary to use tool steel with dimensions of 300-500x20-50 mm. The front part of the knife is sharpened at an angle of 60-70 degrees, and the rear area should be slightly bent. Prefabricated knives are short cutters, no more than 6-8 cm long, which are fixed on a mandrel at an angle of 180 degrees to each other using a pair of bolts.

A suitable material for making a prefabricated knife would be a hacksaw blade or tool steel with a thickness of 0.2 cm. The cutting edge should be slightly curved downward, which minimizes the risk of plants wrapping around the motor shaft. The knives must be provided with clear alignment to prevent strong vibration during operation.

A solid knife is less reliable when working on a lawn surface, but can easily fold under the influence of hard objects.

Mechanical lawn mowers

There are also the safest models, which do not require a motor or gasoline to operate. The advantages of assembling a mechanical lawn mower with your own hands include lower costs and ease of installation of the structure.

However, the quality of lawn mowing may suffer if it is not assembled correctly (for example, the grass will not be cut to the same level).

Like previous models, these devices have a body, holding handles, and sharply sharpened knives or disks.

How to make a rotary mower

A do-it-yourself rotary mower, useful for dacha farming, is done like this. A homemade rotary mower-cultivator of rotational action is made from the rear axle of a VAZ. To work you need:

  • disks;
  • gear chain;
  • metal cutters;
  • tavern;
  • opener

The following tools should be prepared:

  • screwdriver;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • screws;
  • nuts;
  • pliers.

An inexpensive homemade rotary mower is made like this. It is necessary to make holes on the disks. Then attach the shredder to the opener, and the knives to the shredder. The knife and the shank should be separated from each other at a distance of the thickness of the first. The cutting element must rotate 360º. To create the axes for fastening the knives, you need carbon steel with a diameter of 8 mm. It is necessary to bring the axle to the stop using a disk. This is how rotary mowers for a tractor or walk-behind tractor are made with their own hands. Let's move on to the next homemade product.

Selection and installation of wheels

The wheels for a homemade lawn mower should not be too large, but the height of such elements to the central part of the unit, as a rule, is at least 100 mm, which ensures optimal placement of the cutters and comfortable movement of the device around the work area.

Wheels that are too small, including furniture wheels, are not able to withstand the significant weight of metal structures for mowing grass.

The correct choice of wheels is especially important when making a mechanical mower yourself, which is due to the lack of an engine. The movement of mechanical units is carried out through pushing forces applied by the operator.

When choosing the wheel diameter, the size of the lawn mower and the rotation speed of the cutters are taken into account, and the tread pattern should prevent slipping on grassy surfaces.

From the Bulgarian

The grinder is perfect for setting up a lawn mower, because it is an almost universal tool that can even be turned into an electric saw, drilling or milling machine. To conveniently and firmly attach an angle grinder to the base of a future homemade lawn mower, you need to take thick metal or cut a car wheel disc in half. If a welded box made of thick metal will be used, it is better to also provide protection on the sides so that the cut grass does not fly on all sides.

When the frame is ready, you need to weld a handle to it. One of the options for its manufacture is to use a thin metal pipe, which is attached to the base in the middle, closer to the edge. For ease of control, it should be located next to the side closest to the mower. The grinder needs to be improved by screwing an elongated threaded nut onto the working part. After this, the power tool will need to be strengthened so that it “looks” down into the ground. Before this, you need to cut a hole in the middle of the body so that the rotating part of the angle grinder can fit into it up to the enclosing casing. The last step will be attaching the cutting part (knife) to the bottom of the grinder and installing the wheels. You can weld one or two on each side.

Safety precautions during operation

A homemade lawn mower requires careful adherence to safety precautions. This is due both to the fact that the tool is electric and to the presence of knives. The first thing you need to do before turning on the lawn mower and starting work is to check its serviceability, the sharpness of the blades, the reliability of all bolts, and the free movement of the wheels. It is very advisable to collect debris from the area, as stones or wooden blocks can cause damage to the lawn mower or injury to the mower. Children or pets must leave the work area.

The correct way to use a lawnmower is to push it away from you. If there is a need to stop working with the lawn mower for a while and then return to it, then you must definitely disconnect the mechanism from the power supply, and not with the button near the engine, but unplug the plug from the socket. And most importantly, operating an electric lawn mower is strictly prohibited in the rain or on wet grass. Cleaning or repairs can only be carried out with the mechanism turned off and cooled down. If you follow these simple rules, your self-assembled lawn mower will delight you for many years to come.

Where to find parts

For an electric mower, a motor with a power of 500 W or more from outdated household appliances that is in working condition is suitable. This could be a vacuum cleaner, drill, chainsaw, grinder or washing machine.

The greater the engine power (ideally 1 kW), the lower the homemade device will operate at lower speeds. Consequently, the knives will become dull less.

In addition, the gripping area depends on the motor power, i.e. area cut by a knife at a time.

The size of the homemade electric mower and the diameter of the knife, which is also considered one of the main parts, the quality of which affects the result and service life, depend on the selected engine.

Used in power supply networks

  • industrial enterprises;
  • rural and urban settlements;
  • construction sites and other objects.

Kiosk-type transformer substations of KTP are made in two standard designs:

  • dead-end;
  • checkpoints.

Kiosk-type transformer substations according to service safety conditions are divided into:

  1. with a switchgear with a single-row arrangement of cells without a busbar bridge;
  2. distribution device with a double-row arrangement of cells with a busbar bridge.

Kiosk type PTS is a modular (block) prefabricated welded metal structure. The blocks (modules) are made with a frame made of steel profiles with a durable coating that provides increased corrosion resistance and a modern design.

Kiosk-type PTS blocks (modules), as a rule, are:

  • high voltage switchgear RUVN-6(10) kV with KSO type cells;
  • power transformer compartment;
  • low voltage switchgear RUNN-0.4 kV with ShchO type cells.

The layout of the PTS, its dimensions and the number of blocks depends on the electrical connection diagram, the number of cells and the power of the transformer. KTP blocks are separated by metal partitions and have separate doors locked with locks.

In RUVN and RUNN substations, cells are located in one row to form a service corridor. KTS modules are equipped with lighting, heating and ventilation devices with ready-made wiring, which allows installation of the substation in a shorter time.

RUVN at PTS with a power of over 250 kVA is carried out on the basis of chambers of the KCO-3xx series, and over 1000 kVA can be made on the basis of KSO-2xx with vacuum circuit breakers. RUNN, are equipped with ShchO-70 panels both with automatic switches on the input and outgoing lines, and with switches and fuses. The frequency converter in the technical delivery conditions is specified after each room is capable of withstanding the service of DC electric motors. In general, frequency converters coincide with several terminals and convectors. Same with this system.
