The MAZ-5516A5 modification is equipped with YaMZ-6582.10 diesel engines (based on the YaMZ-238DE2) that meet the Euro-3 environmental standard. Their power is 330 horsepower (or 243 kW). The MAZ-5516A8 equipped with more powerful, 400-horsepower (294 kW) YaMZ-6581.10 engines (based on the YaMZ-7511.10E2), also Euro-3. The gearboxes are also made from Yaroslavl - YaMZ-2381. The dumping platform on each of these modifications has the possibility of three-way unloading. The standard carrying capacity of these modifications is set by the manufacturers at 20 tons.

The Cummins 6ISBe4 engine, which is equipped with the MAZ-5516W4-420 , already belongs to the Euro-4 standard. Its power is 300 horsepower, or 220 kW. The engine works in conjunction with a 9-speed “JS-135/TA” gearbox. The dumping platform installed on the chassis of these vehicles is U-shaped (to put it simply, “trough-shaped”), intended only for rear unloading. The standard carrying capacity is 15.1 tons.

Of those modifications of the family that have already been discontinued, the most widespread are the following:

“MAZ 551603-221” and “MAZ 551603-223” (with a six-cylinder turbo diesel engine “YMZ-236BE2” Euro-1). At the same time, the dump truck with index -221 is distinguished by a tipper cargo platform with a rear closing side, and the 223rd is distinguished by a bucket-shaped dump body without a rear side.

Engines "MAZ-5516"

The vast majority of MAZ-5516 dump trucks, now remaining in service, were produced with diesel engines from the Yaroslavl Motor Plant - eight-cylinder, turbocharged power units YaMZ-6582 and YaMZ-6581, subsequently modified to comply with the third European standard. The first of these engines produces 330 horsepower at 2100 rpm; the second – 400 horsepower at 1900 rpm.

The YaMZ-6581 engine, developed specifically to equip MAZ vehicles, was structurally based on the YaMZ-7511 engine with common cylinder heads. The same thing - the YaMZ-6582.10 motor is made on the basis of the YaMZ-238DE2 engine. These MAZ engines differ from their basic technical characteristics due to the installation of electrically controlled fuel equipment with a Kompakt-40 type injection pump with an electronic regulator; changing the design of a number of engine components and parts, with a closed crankcase ventilation system.

A small part of trucks of this brand (namely, modifications “MAZ-5516-33-380” and “MAZ-5516-33-371”) were produced with imported (German) engines “Deutz BF6M1013FC code 210” with a power of 286 horsepower, in combination with nine-speed ZF 9S109 gearbox.

The power unit is attached to the frame of the MAZ-5516 car at three points (one front and two side). In addition, there is a fourth engine support mount. To service the engine, the dump truck cab tilts forward using a hydraulic mechanism. In the transport position, the cabin is secured with a locking mechanism and a safety rope.

The debut of the MAZ 5516 car took place in 1994. The model received a design typical of most products of the Minsk Automobile Plant. The first versions were equipped with a cabover type operator's cabin and were distinguished by severe asceticism. The operator's cabin stood out for its minimalist design, lack of hints of ergonomics and simplicity. The picture was completed by cheap paint materials and rather mediocre painting. Driver comfort was clearly not a priority when creating the operator's cab for this model. The equipment was distinguished by a rigid suspension, nondescript appearance and an extremely simple design. At the same time, the car turned out to be quite cheap.


Despite its shortcomings, the MAZ 5516 immediately gained great popularity. One of the main reasons for this was the availability and significant carrying capacity (20,000 kg). On paved roads, special equipment transported up to 30,000 kg of cargo.

The developers of the vehicle, taking into account the popularity of the MAZ 5516 and consumer criticism, almost immediately began improving individual components, while simultaneously starting to work on various variations of the equipment. The consumer properties of the car gradually improved, although even in the modified versions the minimalism inherent in the first generation was visible. And while the frame of the operator’s cabin has not undergone structural changes, the comfort elements have been improved. The operator's cabin of the updated models now has a sprung driver's seat and improved sound insulation. The truck's power plant received a heater, making it easier to start in winter.

Later, an extended variation of the operator's cabin was introduced, complemented by 2 sleeping bunks. The ergonomic parameters of the driver's seat remained not at the highest level, but there were significantly fewer questions about them.


Since the 2000s, the Minsk Automobile Plant has revised its model painting technology. This made it possible to extend the “life” of the MAZ 5516. Again, the consumer was offered a modified body with a heating system.

Currently, production of the car continues. At the same time, the available modifications of the MAZ 5516 differ little from the variants of 20 years ago, with the exception of some design modifications. The main advantages of the model remain ease of maintenance, ease of repair and low cost.

Already in 2011, the number of those built exceeded the number of MAZ-5516 produced. Design and modifications

The truck has an ascetic, somewhat outdated appearance. The car received a rectangular cabin with rounded edges, a massive black grille, on which is a chrome-plated logo of the Minsk Automobile Plant. The front rectangular massive bumper houses head optics.
