Fuel consumption

One of the indicators characterizing the operation of equipment is fuel consumption. The payback period and further operating costs depend on it.

A fuel tank with a capacity of 160 liters is installed on the excavator. This volume is enough for continuous work during one shift.

Traditionally, the manufacturer indicates fuel consumption as a range for different loads:

  • low - 7.6-9.5 l/h;
  • average - 9.8-11.5 l/h;
  • limit - 12.4-16.5 l/h.

The Caterpillar 428f engine will deliver the stated power when operating the machine at altitudes of up to 2,300 meters above sea level. At higher elevations, torque will automatically be reduced to protect the hydraulic system and transmission.

Hydraulic system

To operate the actuators in the excavator, a hydraulic system with a closed center is used.

  • The working fluid is pumped by an axial piston pump. It produces 160 l/min at a pressure of 25 MPa.
  • The flows are controlled by spool valves.
  • The system reservoir holds 40 liters of working fluid.

Power transmission

The CAT 428f2 loader is designed with all-wheel drive, which is typical for all Caterpillar brand machines in this class. A transmission consisting of a clutch, gearbox, transfer case, two cardans and axles is responsible for transmitting torque to the drive wheels.

  • To facilitate maintenance, the final drives were made in the form of external final drives.
  • A reinforced rear axle was installed on the excavator, designed to work in difficult conditions. It is equipped with self-regulating internal brakes and a differential locking clutch.
  • The front axle has a pendulum-type fastening to reduce dynamic loads while driving.

In addition, the developers tried to reduce the maintenance of the structure to a minimum. The housing is sealed, and the lubricant should be sufficient for the entire service life.

Layout

The basis of the design is a welded frame onto which the following is attached:

  • power unit;
  • transmission;
  • cabin;
  • actuators.

Almost entirely manufactured by automatic welding machines without human intervention, which increases its strength and durability.

The cabin was placed above the gearbox and rear axle. This configuration provides equally good visibility when operating the loading bucket and digging equipment. The latter is achieved by shifting the mechanism to the right side relative to the operator.

Retractable supports were placed behind the rear wheels to give the machine stability when excavating soil with an earth-moving bucket.

Description and features

Almost every brand has such machines in its lineup. One of the very first manufacturers to begin mass production of backhoe loaders is the American Caterpillar, whose first machine was introduced in 1985. From then until our time, technology has been improved many times. Thus, the modern Caterpillar 428 has a hydromechanical transmission, a powerful power plant, a reliable closed-center hydraulic system and additional hydraulic adjustment functions. This model was designed based on the tractor of the same name. The Cat 428 itself served as the basis for many other similar machines. Thanks to its versatility, optional multi-purpose attachments, great mobility and all-wheel drive, this backhoe loader is ideal for a wide range of different tasks.

The Caterpillar 428 came out quite quickly. Its maximum speed, developed when moving independently, reaches 40 kilometers per hour, which allows the vehicle to reach not too distant objects in a very short period of time. However, its transportation over long distances is carried out using a special trawl.

As described above, this model uses an all-wheel drive system. This arrangement is found in almost all modern machines produced by this manufacturer. But the main difference of this model was the advanced system that allows you to control the smoothness of the ride. This was used to prevent the machine from rocking and to compensate for shocks that occur during loading operations or when moving over rough terrain. The brake system of the equipment has high-quality and reliable brake mechanisms installed on all wheels, which ensures high braking efficiency.

The Cat 428 hydraulic system includes hydraulic distributors responsible for regulating the flow of hydraulic oil. Thanks to this, an optimal ratio of work to applied load was achieved. The design of the backhoe loader has been modernized, which made it possible to increase the initial moment during the break-off process by 10 percent.

The excavator cabin has an increased level of comfort and safety. The basic equipment is equipped with air conditioning and a well-thought-out ventilation system, thanks to which the operator can work in fairly favorable conditions, regardless of environmental factors. Only high-quality finishing materials are used, as well as sound-proofing and vibration-absorbing materials, due to which it was possible to significantly reduce the level of extraneous noise and vibrations that occur both during movement and in the work process. The operator's workplace offers excellent all-round visibility, and all controls for mounted equipment are located as ergonomically as possible, which provides additional convenience when operating this equipment. It is worth noting that the control levers have received an improved shape, resulting in less effort required by the operator. A key feature of the Caterpillar 428 backhoe loader is the advanced Accu Grade system, which allows the operator to control the angle and depth of ditches and trenches being dug, as well as additional attachments.

In the basic configuration, the equipment is equipped with a bucket with a backhoe, a multi-purpose hydraulic loading bucket and a telescopic boom with the possibility of extending the handle. Optionally, the following attachments can be installed on the machine:

  1. Vibrating plate designed for compacting loose soils.
  2. A hydraulic breaker used in dismantling work, as well as for loosening solid masses of soil and rock.
  3. Auger drilling units designed for drilling wells of various depths and diameters.
  4. Leveling equipment designed for laying asphalt or concrete pavements.

Another important advantage of this model is its ease of maintenance and repair. The hood of the car is quite large, thanks to which maintenance personnel have full access to all the most important elements and components of the power unit. It is also necessary to highlight the large angle of the turning base, the ability to move with a crab move, and the “track to track” mode (in which all wheels turn in different directions). All this provides the equipment with excellent maneuverability, which in turn allows you to perform any work in rather cramped conditions. This is precisely the reason for the model’s leading position in the global market for special equipment.

Other features of this machine are the following:

  1. The boom has a curved shape, due to which the reach area when performing loading and unloading operations has been significantly increased in comparison with other models.
  2. The equipment has increased cross-country ability, which allows you to move on loose soils, viscous and slippery surfaces and over rough terrain, as well as work in places that are difficult for other equipment to pass. This is due to selectable all-wheel drive and an effective braking system.
  3. There is a modern satellite system Product Link, which allows you to track both the movement of equipment and its current location.

But besides the advantages, Cat 428 also has some disadvantages, namely these:

  1. In the basic configuration, there is no possibility of turning the rear wheels, so the car turns only with the front ones. But this drawback can be compensated for by the additional installation of an all-wheel steering control system.
  2. The installed engine is quite demanding on the quality of diesel fuel supplied. Due to low-quality fuel, its operation is uneven. This is usually corrected by installing additional fuel filters.
  3. The ground clearance under the frame is not high enough, which is why various damage may occur when overcoming any obstacles.
  4. Wheel mudguards are not designed to last for a long time.

But, despite this, this model has quite a lot of positive reviews from owners. As they say, even after the release of a significantly improved modification, the Caterpillar 428 is in very high demand, both among new special equipment and used ones.

Features of operation

The standard F2 model was equipped with a standard cabin. By special order, the comfort of the workplace can be increased to the “deluxe” standard with improved noise and vibration insulation.

Regardless of the class, the standard version includes a powerful air conditioning unit and security systems - ROPS and FOPS. The first protects the operator when the excavator overturns, and the second from falling objects.

The rear and front lights can be adjusted to direct the light beams to the desired point.

The developers tried to simplify and minimize operator intervention in the operation of the main components and mechanisms.

  • All daily inspection points are grouped together and are easily accessible.
  • The drive axles are sealed and do not require frequent maintenance or labor-intensive lubrication of units under the bottom of the machine.
  • During routine maintenance, quick adjustments can be made to the telescopic boom wear pads and outriggers. The set screws are placed in an accessible place, which allows you to adjust the position of the elements without disassembling the units.
  • The design of the hood with a folding radiator was also successful.
  • The cooler pivots on hinges for easy access to the engine compartment.

Pros, cons

Caterpillar equipment has proven itself well at construction and loading sites. Among the advantages, machine operators highlight the following nuances.

  1. Maneuverability. The short wheelbase, together with the steering angle of 52°, allows the machine to be used in confined spaces.
  2. Productive hydraulics. By increasing the diameters of the cylinders and increasing the pressure in the system, the developers achieved an increase in the forces on the actuators.
  3. Sustainability. All-wheel drive allows you to confidently operate on slippery or inclined surfaces.
  4. Easy to use. All main components are freely accessible, which simplifies the replacement of worn parts, repair and maintenance of equipment.
  5. Possibility of equipping the machine with additional mechanisms and tools.

The disadvantages include the high price of both the device itself and its maintenance. This is due to the fact that there is a direct relationship with the exchange rate.

The lack of complaints about performance is explained by the fact that the developers closely monitor the condition of the equipment in various conditions and correct existing design flaws.

Cabin

Like everything else, it is designed with the operator's needs in mind. Its main features are:

  • modern design;
  • high degree of security;
  • maximum comfort;
  • simple controls.

Increase productivity and reduce fatigue through a number of features, including remote control of the legs, large adjustable air vents, excellent interior visibility, and an air-suspended seat.
