Peculiarities

This vehicle is a Class 8 tractor (the penultimate, second class of heavy trucks) according to the GVWR rating.

The manufacturer offers a very wide selection of options for components and assemblies (frame, engines, suspensions), cabins and options, thanks to which you can create a personalized car.

The Kenworth W900 served as the basis for the T600 truck. Introduced in 1986, the model features a much more aerodynamic design, resulting in 22% better fuel efficiency. The car did not become the successor to the W900 and was produced together with it until 2007, when the T600 itself received a successor - the T660. In 2012, the T680 also appeared.

Distinctive features

The Kenworth W900 is a Class 8 truck. It is produced in many modifications, each of which has design and external differences. This variety allows the consumer to choose a car that will satisfy all his needs.

In 1986, based on the Kenworth W900 model, the T600 truck was released. It differed from the legendary model in its aerodynamic design, which contributed to significant fuel savings. This car was produced not instead of the previous one, but along with it. But then it had a more modern successor, the T660, which was later replaced by the T680.

Story

The W900 has been in production since 1961. Moreover, it did not become a replacement for previous models, but was produced for some time along with them, borrowing many features. That is, the car has been produced for more than 55 years. At the same time, in modern cars little remains of the first copies: during this time the truck has undergone many updates: both structural and external.

The first cars featured exterior door handles located below the side windows, chrome grille handles for hood tilt, "baffle" style doors, a fiberglass roof panel (a major change from previous Kenworth models), and large front and vent windows in the doors.

  • In 1967, the letter A was added to the model index.
  • In 1972, the locks were replaced with paddle style parts.
  • The following year, the hood emblem received three red stripes instead of four.
  • In 1976, a taller cab for long trips appeared. In addition, they introduced a more luxurious version of the VIT, equipped by default with such exclusive equipment for those years as a double bed and a refrigerator, which soon became part of the list of regular options.
  • In 1982, with the replacement of headlights with rectangular ones, the car received the index B. Compared to the W900A, the landing on the chassis became higher. At the same time, the previous “Kenworth” W900 continued to be produced in Mexico (Kenmex), but also with rectangular headlights.
  • In 1987, the W900S was introduced. The model received a sloping hood to improve visibility.
  • In 1989, the W900L version appeared with a wheelbase extended to 3.3 m.
  • In 1994, models in the line began to use the T600 cabin, which is distinguished primarily by a curved windshield, in contrast to the flat two-section windshield of the W900. It was initially only available on the long version of the Aerocab and as an option on the Daycab. In 2006, such a cabin began to be installed only on the W900S. At the same time, the Aerocab and extended versions of the Daycab were not equipped with a flat windshield. At the same time, curved glass was offered in both solid and split versions.
  • In 1998, a modification of the Studio Aerocab appeared.
  • In 2014, based on the W900L, in honor of the 25th anniversary of this version, a limited edition ICON900 was released. It features a large number of chrome elements and special badges.

Engine characteristics

Kenwort trucks are equipped with powerful turbodiesel engines manufactured by Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel. Their power is 355-600 horsepower. However, the Paccar concern, like every self-respecting company, does not refuse to use engines produced at its own factories. Paccar offers several options for its own 6-cylinder engines. These include:

  • PX-9 with a volume of 8.9 liters and a power of 260-450 hp. With.;
  • MX-11 with a volume of 10.8 liters and a power of 355-430 hp. With.;
  • MX-13 with a volume of 12.9 liters and a power of 380-500 hp.

Ground clearance ranges from 30.5 to 45.7 cm, also without load. There are three options for fuel tanks with a diameter of 22, 24.5, 28.5 inches and volumes from 142.2 to 670 liters.

Chassis

The front suspension is Dana Spicer D2000 20K Standard Track with five leaf spring options, the rear suspension is double or triple, represented by twenty main versions of designs, including models from the manufacturer itself, as well as Reyco, Chalmers, Hend, Hendrickson, Neway. Spring or spring-pneumatic designs are available. The steering is equipped with a TAS 65 hydraulic booster. The Kenworth W900 has 22.5-inch wheels measuring 425/65. They are equipped with Bridgestone M844F, R250F, M726EL tires.

In the production program of every American company that produces hooded trucks with a gross weight of over 15 tons (class 8), there is sure to be at least one model made in the classic style. At Kenworth, this is the W900 family, which received a letter index in its designation in honor of one of the founders of the company, Edgar Worthington. The characteristic features of the cars were the angular shapes of the cabin and tail, and the abundance of deliberately highlighted external elements. The first of today's series of trucks with a classic style tail and hood appeared in the winter of 1982, the W900B tractor.

Its more versatile version, the W900S, for work primarily as a single vehicle, was shown in the fall of 1987. Both differed in the distance from the front bumper to the rear wall of the cabin at 3048 mm, and the W900S was designed to use lighter power units with a capacity of 253 - 435 horsepower. The most powerful W900L models with a distance from the bumper to the rear wall of the cabin of 3303 millimeters and engines of 355-608 “horses” appeared at the end of 1989, and its version W900 AeroCab - at the end of 1994. The most striking model is the W900L, which is distinguished by the largest dimensions of the engine compartment, wheelbase and household module. The distance from the bumper to the rear wall of the short cabin exceeds 3300 mm, and the length of the sleeping compartment ranges from 1524 to 1880 mm.

It is no coincidence that Kenworth W900L long-haul road trains, racing along the highways of the North American continent at speeds of 120 - 140 km/h, are often called “kings of the roads.” It is quite natural that the closest attention is paid to the working conditions of the crew: effective cabin suspension, comfortable driver's seats such as Air Cushion Plus and Air Cushion, Premium Plus, tilt- and height-adjustable steering wheel with a built-in Sear Wheel system, air conditioning, car radio , mobile radio station, a huge number of options for the design of sleeping compartments and decoration and equipment. The Studio Sleeper household module can be considered the pinnacle of design excellence, for the first time in the truck industry, equipped with a two-seater folding sofa and an 81-centimeter wide upper folding shelf.

The modification, made in the Texas style, was highly appreciated by individual owners. Diesel engines Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit Diesel develop power of 355 - 600 hp, manual transmissions have 9 - 18 steps, the wheelbase is 4318 - 7240 millimeters. The total weight of single vehicles is 15.9 - 29 tons, road trains - 36.3 - 61.3 tons. Suspension – spring or spring-pneumatic. The W900B model has the same power plants, transmission and suspension units. Only it solves a wider range of transport problems, along with long-distance transportation, it tows heavy construction equipment and large-sized industrial installations, and technological and other special equipment is mounted on it.

The distance from the bumper to the rear wall of the cabin is about 3050 m, the length of the sleeping compartments is 1067 - 1830 millimeters. The wheelbase is in the range of 4064 – 6604 mm, the total weight of the road train reaches 97.6 tons. Another representative of the W900S family is used as a chassis for mounting concrete mixers, dump trucks, telescopic cranes, fuel tanks, and bodies for various purposes. The wheelbase is 5080 - 6604 mm, engine power is 260 - 400 hp, gross weight is 27.2 - 38.6 tons.
