The T-40 wheeled tractor occupied one of the most important places in the product line of the Lipetsk Tractor Plant from 1961 to 1995. Today it has been discontinued, but continues to be a faithful assistant to thousands of farmers, builders, and public utilities. Among the most successful design solutions that led to the popularity of the T-40 are the gearbox, transmission and front-hood layout. As a result, the tractor has proven to be economical to operate, reliable and easy to maintain and repair, and continues to be actively used on many modern farms and enterprises.

The T-40 wheeled tractor in its basic version belongs to the 0.9 t towing class and is considered a high-performance machine for performing all basic agricultural work with the possible transportation of heavy loads over long distances on dirt roads. When determining the performance indicators of this model, stubble work is taken as a basis. The speed depends on the position of the lever.

In 1961, the Lipetsk Tractor Plant mastered the production of a wheeled tractor under the designation T-40. The successful design of the T-40 and the good technical parameters of this universal row-crop tractor helped to gain popularity, which is confirmed by its presence on the assembly line until 1995. The advantages and disadvantages of the agricultural unit model include:

  • front-engine layout;
  • successful design of the transmission and gearbox on the T-40;
  • economical operation;
  • reliability;
  • maintainability.

These advantages of the T-40 helped to develop modifications that are in demand in industry and other industries. Among the main ones:

  • 40AM – all-wheel drive version;
  • 41AN – option with reduced ground clearance for agricultural work on slopes;
  • 50A – loader with bucket;
  • T38 – tracked version of the tractor;
  • 40AP – modification for use in the housing and communal services sector.

Transmission

The Lipetsk plant wheeled agricultural machine was produced with an eight-speed manual transmission, which includes:

  • creeper for operation at lower speeds;
  • reverse with bevel gear for tractor operation in reverse;
  • bevel gear for transferring torque and direction of rotation from the power unit to the input shaft and speed reducer;
  • main gear with differential for transferring torque to the wheels and adjusting angular speeds when cornering;
  • differential lock, which synchronizes the operation of the axle shafts;
  • gears and shafts responsible for changing speed and changing the direction of movement;
  • a mode shift box locking mechanism that prevents incomplete engagement of the gears;
  • final drive, which reduces the speed of rotation of the axle shafts.

If the tractor smokes

If a tractor smokes, this may be due to:

  • incorrect adjustment of the working fluid supply;
  • motor overload;
  • incorrect installation of the piston part;
  • dirty air purifier;
  • small advance angle of the fuel injection system;
  • damaged injectors.

In these cases, engine repair using spare parts is required, and in some situations, overhaul.

If the smoke is black, it is recommended to reduce the load on the power unit or switch to first or second gear. It is also worth checking the nozzle holes of the spray mechanism with a needle, rinsing it, and if necessary, replacing it.

When white smoke pours out, you need to grind the valves or replace the heads of the cylindrical elements. The cause of white smoke may be water getting into the diesel fuel; in this case, it is necessary to drain the fuel fluid and add new one.

Blue smoke is a sign that piston parts such as rings and liners have been damaged.

How to change speeds

General switching rules are standard for agricultural machinery:

  • Depressing the pedal, disengage the clutch;
  • enable the required mode;
  • Do not change the direction of movement (forward or reverse) while moving in the selected gear.

This model operates in six forward gears, each of which allows for faster movement while reducing traction effort:

  • 1st for driving at a speed of 6.13 km/h with a towing force of 1100 kg;
  • 2nd gives movement at 7.13 km/h and traction force of 990 kg;
  • 3rd – 8.61 km/h and 800 kg;
  • 4th – 10.06 and 640 kg.

The fifth and sixth gears allow the car to move only forward and are not used under load, that is, they are selected without additional units. There are two modes for reverse: slow and standard. When the lever is moved to the first position (“Lock”), you can reach 98 rpm and reach a speed of 1.62 km/h. In reverse, the car moves at 5.28 km/h, and the engine produces 319 rpm.

How to adjust the clutch

Procedure for adjusting the clutch:

  1. Open the hatch of the clutch basket.
  2. Undo the cotter pin and pull out the axial part of the traction mechanism fork.
  3. Remove the fork from the lever.
  4. When screwing on the fork, set the rod length so that when connecting the fork to the handle, the gap between the ends of the levers and the release bearings is 4 mm.
  5. Install and tighten the axial part of the fork.
  6. Close the hatch in the basket along with the lid.

If this mechanism cannot be adjusted by increasing the length of the rod, then the following can be done:

  1. Open the top hatch and undo the nuts.
  2. Unscrew the adjusting bolts.
  3. Move all levers to the forward position.
  4. Connect the clutch lever and the traction fork.
  5. Cotter the axle.
  6. Use feeler gauges to adjust the gap.

Replacing the clutch is carried out as follows:

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the fastening cable from the bracket.
  3. Disconnect the cable.
  4. Unscrew the bolts.
  5. Loosen the rear trailing arm mounting.
  6. Unscrew the bolts that are on the left bracket.
  7. Unscrew the lower casing.
  8. Unscrew the rear engine mount.
  9. Remove the drive clamp.
  10. Remove the engine fasteners.
  11. Release the clutch.
  12. Change bearings.
  13. Replace the driven disk.

Transmission faults

When operating the T-40 tractor, a number of problems associated with switching gears may arise. To prevent them, you must adhere to a maintenance schedule and change lubricants regularly. The oil is used exclusively for the season. The recommended frequency of checking the gearbox is 240 operating hours. Transmission parts and assemblies are washed every 960 hours of operation to eliminate solid particles.

Gearboxes of agricultural machines with the T-40 index are quite repairable. Their maintenance is as follows:

  • the completely shut down machine is installed in a place equipped with anti-roll bars for repairs;
  • drain the transmission fluid;
  • disconnect all nodes, which allows you to get completely close to the device;
  • remove the driveshaft, and then the gearbox itself;
  • remove dirt from the box and disassemble the unit;
  • open the fifth speed cover and inspect the fork and then replace it if necessary;
  • remove all shafts and couplings, inspect the gears for wear;
  • install new bearings;
  • Reassemble the gearbox in reverse order.

Repair work must be carried out when the locking elements fail, which is considered to be the cause of the gear shift failure. In this case, the tractor is completely turned off, and the shift lever is moved to the neutral position. The following sequence of actions is performed:

  • include the main coupling;
  • remove the plug from the locking device;
  • move the shift lever to the extreme position;
  • remove the fork from the traction;
  • adjust the blocking device;
  • reinstall the fork pin.

Typical malfunctions of the GAZ-53/3307 gear selection mechanism and their elimination

The gear selection mechanism is an important part of the gearbox; any malfunctions critically affect the operation of the entire unit, so problems with this mechanism must be resolved without delay.

The gear selection mechanism has two main problems:

  • ?Departure? one or more gears - usually this is a direct consequence of deformation or wear of the forks, loosening of the forks on the rods, as well as wear of the rods themselves;
  • Difficulty in engaging or disengaging gears most likely occurs due to jamming of latches or other parts, and this again occurs due to deformation or wear of components.

There may also be a weakening of the reverse gear fuse, a malfunction of the reverse light switch, breakage or wear of the cotters on the forks, and a number of other malfunctions.

In any case, if the gearbox malfunctions, it should be removed from the truck, disassembled and troubleshooted. All worn, deformed or damaged parts should be replaced.

To maintain the gear selection mechanism of the GAZ-53/3307 gearbox in working condition, you should follow the recommendations for operating the transmission and perform regular maintenance of the gearbox. If you treat the gearbox with care, use the recommended gear oil and timely troubleshooting, the gearbox will work long and reliably.

Arthur Actually, it works loudly on its own. You can reduce noise by placing a thick rubber mat on the floor. The oil should be TAD. If this noise appeared recently, then most likely some bearing has failed. The weak point is the bearings on the reverse. To begin, lift the tractor on the hitch and, with the engine turned off, spin the wheels and try to determine the location of the noise source. If this is not possible, then unscrew a lot of bolts on the cover and look visually. The box is designed so that it does not need to be completely disassembled; all parts can be changed quite simply. And one more thing - when the front axle does not turn off, the box also makes a decent roar.
