In 2022, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant made an unprecedented decision by putting on the main conveyor a rear-wheel drive truck with an onboard platform on a full frame and a hooded cab. The goal of the UAZ Profi project is to take away part of the market from the legendary GAZelle. On New Year's Eve, I drove a brand new Profi on the roads of Western Siberia for about 1000 km and this is what I found out.
Purpose of UAZ Profi
The UAZ Profi vehicle is designed for transporting various light weight cargoes. Depending on the installed body, the vehicle can transport liquid and solid cargo. The machine is used for commercial purposes. The comfortable interior of the UAZ Profi allows you to cover long distances without operator fatigue. To reduce the risk of injury, the model is equipped with a driver's airbag.
The all-wheel drive version allows you to move comfortably both on good quality asphalt surfaces and off-road. This is convenient when it is necessary to deliver cargo to settlements remote from public roads. In winter, the all-wheel drive version of the UAZ Profi is used for driving on snowy roads.
Car design
The UAZ Profi car is built on a frame consisting of two longitudinal metal profiles. They are connected to each other by transverse beams. The rectangular cross-section of the profile allowed the designers to strengthen the frame with metal inserts. Thanks to this, the strength characteristics of the frame have improved.
Cabin
An all-metal cabin is installed in the front part of the frame. It is developed on the basis of the Patriot model. The cabin is sealed, which prevents dust and air from entering the interior of the UAZ Profi car when driving. The manufacturer equips the model with two types of cabins:
- All-metal single-row. The short version of the car has seats arranged in one row;
- All-metal double-row. Extended version of UAZ Profi. It has two rows of seats installed one behind the other. The rear seat is designed as a three-seater sofa.
ATTENTION: Depending on the wheel arrangement of the UAZ Patriot Profi, the number of seats in the front row differs. The all-wheel drive version has 1 driver and 1 passenger seat. The rear-wheel drive version is equipped with one driver's seat and two passenger seats. This design is due to the location of the transfer case levers of an all-wheel drive vehicle.
Body
Depending on the purpose for which the vehicle will be used, the UAZ Profi utility vehicle is equipped with various types of bodies:
- Manufactured goods metal body with low sides. It has a fixed front side and movable side and rear sides. In the closed position, the sides are fixed with specialized latches. The body is equipped with a frame made of metal profiles. An awning is installed on the frame. It protects the transported cargo from the influence of precipitation and wind when the vehicle is moving. The roof of the body is gable. This prevents precipitation from accumulating on the surface;
- Isothermal body. Used for transporting food. The walls of the van are equipped with thermal insulation. It allows you to maintain the microclimate in the body regardless of the ambient temperature. The rear of the insulated van is equipped with double-leaf gates. They have clamps for securing the door leaf in the closed position. At the top there is a ventilation system;
- Refrigerator. Designed for transportation of perishable food products and other goods requiring special temperature conditions. The refrigerator is equipped with climate control equipment. This allows you to maintain the necessary microclimate in the van, regardless of the temperature outside;
- Tank. Used for transporting liquids. A UAZ Profi car with a tank is used as a milk or fuel tanker. The container is attached to the metal platform of the car with tape-type clamps.

Both “Patriot” and “Profi”
Under the hood is a ZMZ PRO gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.7 liters and a power of 150 hp. This is a modernization of the well-known “409” Zavolzhsky engine. The current version index is ZMZ-409051.10. There have been quite a few changes. Double-row chain in the timing drive, valve timing has been changed, the compression ratio has been increased from 9.1 to 9.8. There was a new intake and double-throat exhaust manifold, new pistons and valves. The cylinder head is reinforced with stiffening ribs. Now, with the same working volume of 2.7 liters, the output is 150 hp. and 235 N∙m, the maximum torque speed has shifted to the lower zone (see external speed characteristics of the ZMZ-409051.10 engine).
Diesel versions for the UAZ Pro are not yet offered, otherwise it will not be possible to get into the competitive price. But for an additional payment of 40,000 rubles, gas cylinder equipment of the Lovato brand V generation, running on propane-butane, is provided. A gas cylinder with a volume of 93 liters is placed in a specially reserved space between the frame and the floor of the onboard platform. The creators of the vehicle are proud of this solution, since it does not impair geometric cross-country ability and ensures safety in the event of a collision, and the total range with LNG reaches more than 750 km.
The gearbox is mechanical, 5-speed, South Korean brand Dymos. The supplier has specially adapted the gear ratios for this vehicle. The all-wheel drive version uses an antique transfer case from a “loaf”, which, although it is outrageously noisy on the go, allows you to connect the front axle at speeds of up to 80 km/h! In this case, the clutch pedal is not even activated. I checked it personally, it works! But understanding the current situation of the “handout” is not a puzzle for the faint of heart...
Ulyanovsk residents also abandoned unreliable “hubs” in the front hubs; now all-wheel drive is connected only with a lever in the cab. The rear drive axle is reinforced. The main gear housing received stiffening ribs, the axle housing has thicker walls and a reinforced flange. The gear ratio of the main pair is 4.625. An Eaton differential lock is available as an option.
Organizer that functions as an armrest

At the rear, the designers did not abandon single tires for the sake of cross-country ability when driving in ruts, but they require the use of rubber with a higher load-carrying capacity index. At the front there is a continuous axle on springs, open-type steering knuckles, and in the all-wheel drive version, “Beerfield” type hinges.
Also, “Profi”, unlike “Patriot”, has a different angle of longitudinal inclination of the steering axis of the steered wheels (castor), which made it possible to reduce the turning radius to 5.9 m. Additional trailing arms provide an anti-dive effect during intense deceleration due to the transfer of braking torque to the frame. And by the way, the subject of our test has original front disc brakes; their pads are not interchangeable with the “patriot” ones.
The frame of the “Pro” family is built on the basis of the “Patriot” model - with a closed section. It was lengthened using an insert. Highly loaded areas were reinforced with gussets, and additional crossbars appeared. To increase the load capacity, single-leaf springs with cushions were placed in the same vertical plane with the side members. Profi has its own shock absorbers; they are not interchangeable with other UAZ models.
We tested the cars on roads with different surfaces, including snowy and slippery ones, as well as in mountain pass conditions. First, they rolled away the empty truck, then loaded 30 bags of coal, 28 kg each - a total of 840 kg, then, having unloaded the coal to the customer, they immediately received 1,500 kg of food carrots (one cubic meter of carrots weighs approximately 650 kg). Our UAZ survived all these modes with dignity: it didn’t buck, didn’t kick, and didn’t shine the headlights of the cabin, which was raised high from overload. But the acceleration dynamics were falling, and the springs of the rear axle were working to the limit; driving for a long time with an overload on the “Pro” is definitely contraindicated.
UAZ Profi technical specifications

dimensions
The dimensions of the vehicle allow maneuvering in confined spaces. Dimensional mass parameters differ depending on the version of the car. The parameters of the UAZ Profi car with a two-row cabin are as follows:
- The length of the car from the front bumper to the rear edge of the body with a closed side is 5.99 meters;
- The height from the covering to the upper edge of the body frame is 2.52 meters;
- The width along the outer edge of the side mirrors is 2.54 meters;
- Body height – 1.65 m;
- The track of the UAZ Profi car at the wheel centers is 1.6 m;
- Ground clearance under the rear axle gear housing is 21 centimeters;
- Wheelbase – 3.5 meters;
- Platform length – 2.35 m;
- The vehicle's carrying capacity is 1400 kilograms;
- The total weight of the UAZ Profi utility vehicle is 3485;
- Body width - available in two versions - 1.87 and 2.06 meters.
Parameters of a car with a single-row cab:
- The length of the car from the front bumper to the rear edge is 5.94 meters;
- The width of the car according to the mirrors is 2.315 m;
- Height to the top edge of the body – 2.52 m;
- Track (the distance between the centers of the wheels of one axle is 1.6 m;
- Wheelbase – 3.5 meters;
- Body length – 3089 millimeters;
- Body width – 1.87 – 2.6 meters;
- Ground clearance of UAZ Pro in the rear axle area is 21 centimeters;
- The carrying capacity of a car with an extended body is 1510 kilograms.
IMPORTANT: The dimensions of a light truck body make it attractive for commercial use. The UAZ Profi car, whose carrying capacity reaches 1.5 tons, can move in confined spaces.
Chassis of UAZ Profi
The manufacturer produces the UAZ Profi car with two wheel configurations - 4x4 and 4x2. The UAZ Pro all-wheel drive vehicle has a dependent suspension. The front and rear axles are made in the form of drive axles.
The rear suspension of the all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive versions of the car does not differ in design. The rear axle is mounted on semi-elliptic springs. The design of the springs differs from previous models of the Ulyanovsk plant. The spring of the UAZ Profi car is attached to the bridge from the bottom side with stepladders. Thanks to this, the truck rides smoothly and does not sag when loading.
The front axle of the rear-wheel drive version is mounted on springs. They are installed in specialized brackets on the front beam and frame. The steering knuckles are pivotally connected to the beam by ball joints. The wheel mechanisms of the front axle of the car do not have a drive and are used to control the vehicle. To reduce the level of vibrations when driving the UAZ Profi, hydraulic shock absorbers are installed on the front axle.
The front axle of the all-wheel drive UAZ Profi is a drive axle. It is mounted on springs and equipped with shock absorbers. Torque is transmitted to the wheel mechanisms through CV joints. This design reduced the minimum turning radius.
Brake system UAZ Profi
The UAZ Profi 4x4 and 4x2 is equipped with a hydraulic braking system. The brake mechanisms of the front and rear axles are different. The rear mechanism consists of a brake drum, shoes with friction linings and a working cylinder. When you press the brake pedal, fluid pressure acts on the pistons of the working cylinder. They press the pads against the drum, braking the car. The movement of the pads in the opposite direction is carried out by a power spring.
The front axle of the car is equipped with disc brakes. The mechanism is slowed down by a caliper that presses the pads against the disc. Fluid is supplied to the steering mechanisms of the front axle through elastic hoses.
REFERENCE: The brake fluid pressure in the system is created by the master cylinder. To reduce the driver's effort when pressing the pedal, a vacuum booster is provided.
The parking brake of the UAZ Profi car is installed on the transmission. It is made in the form of a drum and pads with friction linings. The expansion mechanism drive is cable driven. When the parking brake is applied, the releasing pads block the driveshaft of the machine. The UAZ Pro parking brake only acts on the driveshaft of the rear axle.
Engine UAZ Profi
The manufacturer installed a gasoline power unit on the UAZ Profi car. Distributed fuel injection makes the engine operate smoothly at different speeds.
The engine has high power and low fuel consumption. Power plant characteristics:
- Engine type – four-stroke petrol;
- Fuel supply – distributed injection;
- Number of working cylinders – 4;
- The arrangement of the cylinders is in-line, vertical;
- The total volume of the cylinders is 2693 cm3;
- Number of intake and exhaust valves – 8 intake and 8 exhaust;
- Type of fuel used - gasoline;
- Working cylinder diameter – 95.5 mm;
- The piston stroke from top to bottom dead center is 94 mm;
- The maximum power of the power unit is 150 horsepower;
- The average fuel consumption of UAZ Pro is 12 liters per 100 km.
IMPORTANT: the car's fuel tank capacity is 72 liters. With such a volume, the UAZ Profi fuel consumption per 100 km allows you to cover long distances without refueling.
The engine is started by an electric starter. The starter is controlled remotely. When the device is turned on, the solenoid relay is activated, which engages the drive gear with the flywheel. When the motor starts, the relay rod returns in the opposite direction under the action of a spring.
The engine lubrication system is combined. The parts are lubricated with oil under pressure created by a gear-type pump. Spraying oil under the valve cover lubricates the timing parts.
Liquid cooling allows you to use the machine both in winter and summer. Antifreeze is cooled in a radiator installed in the front of the car. The liquid circulates in the cooling system under the influence of a belt-driven water pump.
The engine is installed on the car frame. To reduce vibration, elastic cushions are provided. The simplicity of the design allows minor engine malfunctions to be repaired by a person with minimal technical knowledge.
Transmission UAZ Profi
The manufacturer installs a manual gearbox on the UAZ Profi. The Korean-made mechanism has 5 forward and 1 reverse gears. The transmission differs depending on the version of the car.
UAZ Profi 4 by 4 with a double-row or single-row cab has a transfer gearbox. The transfer case is necessary to distribute torque between the front and rear axles of the car. It has low and high gears. Reducing the torque transmitted to the wheel mechanisms improves the vehicle's cross-country ability. The transfer case is rigidly mounted on the gearbox housing. The transfer case is controlled remotely and mechanically. It is carried out by two levers located in the cab of the car.
Torque is transmitted from the transfer gearbox to the drive axles. The rear axle is constantly engaged and equipped with a planetary gearbox. Wheel mechanisms are driven by axle shafts. The rear gearbox is equipped with a cross-axle differential. The front axle is forcibly disengaged.
REFERENCE: Regardless of the configuration, the UAZ Profi can be additionally equipped with a cross-axle differential lock on the rear axle. Blocking improves cross-country performance.
Rear-wheel drive models do not have a transfer case. The manufacturer installs a specialized attachment on the gearbox housing. Thanks to the attachment, the driveshafts of the all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive versions are the same size.
Interior of the UAZ Profi car
The interior of the UAZ Profi is distinguished by a high degree of comfort. UAZ Pro with a two-row cab has front and rear seats. The driver's and front row passengers' seats are adjustable in several planes simultaneously. This allows you to customize the seating parameters for a person of any size.
On the inside of the driver's door there are switches for controlling the electric windows and side rear view mirrors. There is a power window switch on the passenger door.
The floor contains the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals. Between the driver and passenger seats there is a manual transmission shift lever and a parking brake system control. For all-wheel drive models, transfer case control levers are additionally installed between the driver and passenger seats.
The front panel is made of plastic. On the center console there are switches designed to regulate the auxiliary heater. Behind the steering wheel there is a convenient instrument panel. It is equipped with a visor that eliminates sun glare on the glass. There is a storage compartment built into the front panel on the right side.
The manufacturer installed a three-spoke steering wheel on the UAZ Profi. For safety, the steering wheel is equipped with an airbag. The steering column is made of plastic. There is a combination switch on it. It is required to manage:
- Exterior car lighting;
- Light alarm;
- Electric sound signal;
- Windshield cleaning system.
The interior lighting is located above the windshield. it is necessary for comfortable use of the car at night.
Electrical equipment UAZ Profi
The wiring diagram of the UAZ Profi car is made according to the single-wire principle. This means that consumers have a common negative contact, which is the vehicle body.
Electrical equipment is powered by a 12-volt battery. A DC generator is provided to power electrical equipment when the engine is running. It charges the battery. The generator is belt driven.
To protect the on-board network from voltage surges, a regulator relay is included in the circuit.
The engine is started by an electric starter. The positive wire from the battery is connected to the starter.
The car has a light signaling system. It is necessary to indicate maneuver at any time of the day. Light signaling includes:
- Front and rear direction indicators;
- Brake lights;
- Reverse traffic light.
For the safe movement of trucks on public roads at night, the manufacturer equipped the UAZ Profi with external lighting. Exterior headlights have three modes - low beam, high beam and side lights. Additionally, fog lights are installed on the UAZ Profi. They are located in the front bumper of the car.
The car's interior is equipped with interior lighting. This includes a lamp installed above the windshield, lighting of instruments and controls. Thanks to the internal lighting, it is possible to use the car comfortably at night.
Siberian paths
Kemerovo region, the village of Sheregesh - Mecca of local skiers, the brewery in Plotnikovo, harsh Novokuznetsk, the passes of mountain Shoria, Mount Belokurikha and numerous coal mines of Kuzbass - I will remember this trip for a long time, but this is poetry. And now the facts revealed in this harsh region.
As I already noted, the energy intensity of the suspensions is excellent, “Profi” literally swallows any holes and bumps. Moreover, it does this equally successfully regardless of the load, although sometimes it steers wildly - just know, hold the steering wheel tighter! The steering settings turned out to be smeared: the steering wheel is empty in the near-zero zone, I would like more reactivity.
The clutch pedal travel is large, reliable squeezing is possible only in the position near the floor, and the brake pedal with large free travel matches, but there is no need for a jewelry dosage of effort: you can press the pedals here even in felt boots! However, in this segment this can hardly be called a disadvantage... The high center of mass and the windage of the body affected the dynamics of the loaded vehicle. Climbing up the mountain, I had to constantly operate the gearbox, and on slopes try to accelerate quickly in order to storm the upcoming climb with a loaded car as successfully as possible.
Body and awning with a natural “lantern” on the roof
In general, the UAZ “Profi”, although it belongs to the passenger category “B”, in terms of driving technology it is absolutely a truck, although quite comfortable. But this is precisely why he is interesting and original. In addition, even the rear-wheel drive version, equipped with a lock (surcharge for the option - 29,000 rubles), is capable of resisting even the easiest off-road conditions, not to mention all-wheel drive, and at the same time the machine is capable of performing hefty transport work for its modest dimensions.
The combination of price and functionality in this car deserves high praise: the UAZ “Profi” will certainly find its fans in a specific market niche, where there will be a place for defectors from Nizhny...

Advantages of UAZ Profi
The UAZ Profi model has a number of advantages:
- Load capacity. UAZ Profi can transport cargo weighing up to 1.5 tons. This allows the machine to be used for commercial purposes;
- High cross-country ability. The all-wheel drive transmission allows you to deliver cargo to settlements remote from public roads;
- Powerful power unit. The engine power installed on the UAZ Profi is sufficient for the intended use of the vehicle. The motor has good dynamic performance, which allows it to be successfully used in urban environments;
- Comfort. Thanks to ergonomic seats, adjustable steering wheel position and a comfortable interior, the degree of driver fatigue during long trips is reduced;
- Variety of installed bodies. Depending on the body installed on the vehicle, various loads can be transported;
- Structural strength. Car components are made of durable materials, which extends the service life;
- Safety. Seat belts and airbags protect the driver and passengers from injury if they are involved in a traffic accident.
From the above it follows that the UAZ Profi car, the technical characteristics of which differ from other models of the Ulyanovsk plant, is a commercial vehicle. It is designed to transport cargo weighing up to 1.5 tons on asphalt and off-road. The manufacturer produces the car in all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive versions.

Good prospects
Like many things in this car, the interior is unified with the latest generation Patriot. The cabin of a rear-wheel drive car is conventionally three-seater: the strangely shaped right seat will only accommodate people closely hugging each other with a minimum body mass index. The ventilation and heating of the cabin are lame: I often had to fight with the windows fogging up even in a car with air conditioning, and the stove constantly requires adjustment with the fan speed and temperature controller.
However, sitting behind the wheel turned out to be very comfortable: the seat and steering column are not deprived of all modern adjustments in all necessary planes. This comfort will be especially noted by those who, having historically used UAZ vehicles, switched to the “Profi” from the “loaf”. The only mistake we can make is the inconveniently located dials for adjusting the angle of the backrest, but there is a pedal unit with a platform for resting the left leg.
Interior in calm gray tones
There is a shelf for documents on the ceiling, and a couple of hooks on the back wall for hanging outerwear. Not much for long trips. Active safety systems include one airbag mounted in the steering wheel hub and ABS brakes as standard. In the near future, a passenger airbag and a stabilization system will appear.
From the cabin you can’t hear the rumble of the platform or the flapping of the canopy, and this is pleasant. But the tight locking mechanisms and antique rope fasteners are not so great, as are the rough welds on the cab and frame. But the translucent “lantern” in the ceiling of the tent and the fastening straps for lifting the canopy are good.
In contrast to the main competitor from the small homeland of the great proletarian writer, the UAZ has three folding sides of the platform, and not just the rear one. The tailgate in the open position rests against special dampers, so it does not wobble. Inside there are brackets for securing the load with rigging straps. The basic body with a useful area of 3089×1870 mm (about 5.8 m2) includes four Euro pallets, the total useful volume of the body is 9.5 m3.
But for an additional payment of 8,000 rubles, you can get a wide platform with an increased distance of 19 cm from the left to the right side (6.4 m2), then the internal usable volume increases to 10.5 cubic meters, and five European pallets will fit. In the future, there is talk of aluminum body sides as an option.
