Engines YaMZ-8401
The YaMZ-840 engines of the Yaroslavl Motor Plant are among the most powerful in the YaMZ product line of heavy twelve-cylinder V-shaped diesel engines.
The engines of this family belong to turbocharged models and comply with two environmental standards Euro-0 and Euro-1. These engines are intended for automobile and tractor equipment. The YaMZ-8401 engine is the base automobile diesel engine of the family; some modifications of the YaMZ-8401 have Euro-1 environmental standards. Motors of the YaMZ-8401 series are used mainly on BelAZ mining dump trucks with a lifting capacity of up to eighty tons and two-link tracked conveyors, both for special military and civilian purposes. Diesels intended for the Ministry of Defense are not supplied to the sales network; only their civilian versions are available to buyers.

Features of the YaMZ-840 family of diesel engines
The designers of the Yaroslavl Motor Plant did not abandon the “V-shaped for 12 cylinders” device architecture that has successfully proven itself in practice. However, to optimize the useful performance characteristics of this family of diesel engines, several important changes were made to their design.
In particular, the cylinder diameters were increased to 140 millimeters. Thanks to this, with a piston stroke of 140 mm, the total working volume of the combustion chambers of this engine increased to 25.86 liters.
The design of the cylinder head was changed, with four valves for each cylinder. This required the installation of a new camshaft. The measures taken made it possible to increase the efficiency of the engine due to better filling of the cylinders with the combustible mixture.
Since from the very beginning it was planned to equip all engines of the YaMZ-840 family with a turbocharging system, the compression ratio was lowered to a ratio of 14.1:1. Two turbochargers were installed, and the degree of discharge in the intake tract was increased.
As a result, a powerful, energy-rich engine with a long service life was obtained, capable of withstanding very significant loads for a long time.
The use of unified cylinder heads individual for each cylinder was used, which simplified the design of the casting, unified the cylinder heads for engines with different numbers of cylinders, improved the adaptability of the diesel engine to repair and simplified the problem of sealing the gas joint.
The use of steel gaskets radically solved the problem of sealing the gas joint and adjusting the clearance above the piston - due to the installation of gaskets of different thicknesses.
The use of pistons with relatively short skirts, with 2 compression rings and 1 oil scraper ring, reduced the dimensions of the engine in height and width, increased the rigidity of the cylinder part of the block and cylinder liners, and also increased the mechanical efficiency of the diesel engine by reducing friction losses.
Cavity oil cooling of the pistons was used. The design of the gas distribution drive, fuel pump and vehicle components from the rear end of the crankshaft ensured that the engine was protected from vibration and reduced its noise.
The use of four valves for each engine cylinder in order to improve filling and reduce pumping losses, profiled intake channels, providing a given torque of the air charge, significantly influenced the improvement of the fuel efficiency of the engine.
An effective damper for torsional vibrations of the crankshaft was installed to reduce stress in its elements. To increase the working life (over 10 thousand hours), the crankshaft journals were nitrided.
Full-flow type oil filters with a high degree of purification and a nozzleless centrifugal oil filter were used to improve the quality of engine oil filtration. Remote, highly efficient dry-type air filters prevent the possibility of cylinder wear and improve diesel performance.
A hydraulic or disc clutch in the fan drive provides automatic and manual control of turning on the fan.
A water-to-air charge air cooler built into the engine cooling system was used to reduce heat stress, improve efficiency and service life.
In the process of developing the optimal design, the optimal valve timing, combustion chamber shape, diesel fuel injection advance angle, and fuel system elements were selected in order to obtain high levels of fuel efficiency, smoke, toxicity and noise.
New high-pressure fuel pumps with a maximum diesel fuel injection pressure of up to 800 kgf/cm2 were used.
Own assembly shop
Assembly is carried out by experienced specialists in our own assembly workshop. Almost half of the workshop workers previously worked at the YaMZ plant. At the end of the day, our new engines are no different from the factory ones, except for the price, of course =)

Turbocharging: gas turbine, with charge air cooling. There are two turbochargers, model TKR-P, with a radial centripetal turbine and a centrifugal compressor. The engines of the YaMZ-8401.01-03, YaMZ-8401.10-04, YaMZ-8401.10-05 and YaMZ-8401.10-06 models are also equipped with 2 turbochargers of the K-36 model.
YaMZ-840 engine lubrication system: mixed, under pressure plus splashing of engine oil. There are two oil filters, they are full-flow (with three replaceable paper filter elements), and there is also a centrifugal filter.
Cooling system: liquid, with forced circulation of coolant. The cooling system pump is centrifugal type.
An electric starter model 16.3708, with a rated voltage of 24 Volts, is used as a starting device. To facilitate starting a cold YaMZ-840 engine, an electric torch device is available. The generator is used alternating current, model 631.3701, or G-263B. Air brake compressor – piston, gear-driven, single-cylinder, model 18.3509.
