The Bogdan Corporation, known today primarily as a manufacturer of passenger vehicles, began its business by selling cars produced by Russian manufacturers. The company grew and expanded the range of products sold. In 1996, KIA was added to the list of brands sold, and three years later Bogdan became a distributor of Hyuindai. The entire model range is Bogdan.
Specifications
Since the bus has an engine of the Japanese brand Isuzu, the full version of the name mentions the marking before the word Bogdan. If the rear and front axles, as well as the driveshaft and gearbox are installed from a Japanese manufacturer, then the pneumatic parts are from Italy.
For comfortable operation of the driver, power steering is installed. Steering column with height and tilt adjustment. The rear-wheel drive bus is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox. Wheel formula of transport is 4x2.
Dual-circuit braking system: working and mechanical parking, which is activated by the transmission.
Anti-lock wheel system called ABS 1 for excellent stability and controllability of the bus. Thanks to this, for maximum convenience of the driver and passengers, Bogdan buses maneuver perfectly.
The monolithic welded body speaks for itself - rigidity, strength and durability of the structure. The heating system, which includes an autonomous Webasto heater and radiator heaters, is considered classic for such cars. The floor is made of waterproof plywood with a soft flooring of automotive linoleum.
The maximum speed that a Bogdan bus can reach is 105 km/h. At maximum load, the bus can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h in just 35 seconds. Moreover, the average fuel consumption with stable driving of 60 kilometers per hour at the rate of l/100 km is about 16 liters. In the rhythm of the city it turns out to be 24 liters.
First steps in production
In 1998, with the acquisition of the Cherkasy Bus enterprise, Bogdan had its own production facilities. With this acquisition, the next important step in the company's development became possible. Just a year later, it was possible to establish the production of Bogdan buses, which were sold on the domestic market, and by 2003 they began to be sold outside Ukraine.
At the turn of the century, the assembly of cars from the Volzhsky Automobile Plant from vehicle kits was organized. At the same time, as part of the trend towards developing its own production capacity, the Lutsk Automobile Plant was acquired, where six years later modern production of buses and trolleybuses was established.
This was preceded by the conclusion of an agreement with Isuzu Motors Limited that it received the right not only to produce Isuzu buses at its own facilities, but also to sell them in Ukraine under its own brand “Bogdan”, and for export under the “Isuzu” brand.
External features of the Bogdan bus series
The outer part is made of fiberglass, rolled and galvanized steel. The main purpose of this part is safety and design.
The rear and side windows are made of tempered glass. Three-layer anti-reflective glass with a rubber profile of the “Triplex” type is inserted into the wind window. Due to the matte surface, the risk of blinding the driver is completely eliminated.
Two hatches on the roof of the bus. Natural ventilation system - through hatches and sliding windows.
First own
At the beginning of 1998, the first small-class city bus “Bogdan A-091” was developed. The design work was carried out by designers and engineers of the Lviv VAT (JSC) Ukravtobusprom, the successor of the All-Union Institute of Bus and Trolleybus Construction, whose half-century anniversary was celebrated three years ago.
Already in May 1998, the first small-class bus “Bogdan A-091” for 45 passengers on an Isuzu NQR71P chassis with an Isuzu 4HG1 engine rolled off the assembly line of the plant in Cherkassy. However, its premiere took place only on June 24, 1999 at the SIA-99 “Autotechservice” exhibition. Subsequently, it became the most popular minibus in Ukraine. At the same time, at the beginning of the 2000s, the plant produced FA-101 vans on the GAZ-3307 chassis, AMG-1 emergency workshops on the KrAZ chassis, vans and hard awnings for GAZelles, UAZs, IZhs and VIS-2345.
Irreplaceable losses. Ukrainian “Bogdan” is trying to reorient itself from the Russian Federation to the EU
The publication Ukraina.ru looked into how things are now at the flagship of the Ukrainian automotive industry, which a few years ago supplied its products to Russia and generally flourished on cooperation with the Russian Federation.
Homemade history of Bogdan: partnership with Russian AvtoVAZ
Bogdan is the largest car manufacturer in Ukraine. The production potential allows the production of over 100 thousand passenger cars, about 9 thousand buses and trolleybuses, as well as about 15 thousand trucks. The corporation's main factories are located in Lutsk and Cherkassy.
The origin of the enterprise occurred in 1992, along with the start of production and sales of cars of the brands IZH, GAZ, Moskvich and UAZ. Business development was facilitated by the conclusion of contracts for the distribution of KIA (1996) and Hyundai (1999) cars, as well as the purchase of an automobile repair plant in Cherkassy.
The year 1999 was marked by the release of small class buses of the Bogdan brand. In 2000, the company produced passenger cars for the first time, using AvtoVAZ kits. In the same year, the Lutsk Automobile Plant was purchased. Beginning in 2003, the export of Bogdan buses began. By 2007, the share of equipment sold abroad (to the CIS and neighboring countries) was approximately half of the total production volume.

In 2005, Bogdan finally took shape as an automobile manufacturing corporation through the merger of more than twenty separate divisions and legal entities. The measures taken by the then government to protect the domestic automaker came in handy. The introduction of a 25% tax on imported cars served as a good incentive for the development of both large-scale car assembly and a full production cycle within the country.
In 2008, a powerful car production plant was opened in Cherkassy with more than 3 thousand employees with a full assembly cycle. It was built with the prospect of long-term cooperation with the Russian Avtozaz, which was Bogdan’s strategic partner. The volume of investment in this project amounted to more than $330 million. The company was supposed to produce two models of Lada passenger cars (2110, 2111) and three models of Hyundai cars. Viktor Yushchenko took part in the celebration ceremony on this occasion . True, Ukraine’s subsequent accession to the WTO, adopted at the instigation of the same Yushchenko, dealt a serious blow to the Ukrainian automobile industry, since protective barriers were sharply lowered and without a transition period, the country’s market was opened to foreign companies, and no support was provided for national ones. And the economic crisis of late 2008 - early 2009 forced the reduction of production and personnel, since a significant part of the products was not sold in the domestic market, which the company primarily focused on.
In 2010, the Ukrainian company received the right to supply the 10th Lada model to the Russian market. In addition, the Bogdan-2310\2312 pickup truck and a cross-station wagon on the VAZ-2111 platform were created from Russian components.
But since 2012, there has been a gradual decline in production: Russia introduced a recycling tax on cars, which led to a decrease in the competitiveness of Ukrainian products. Then production volume decreased by 36% - to 13,455. At the same time, in March 2013, Azarov’s took measures aimed at supporting domestic producers by introducing duties on the import of new passenger cars.
In 2013, an agreement was signed with the Chinese company China Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. Ltd, which made it possible to master the production of a new model of a passenger car - JAC J5. In addition, a contract was signed with another company from China, Lifan Group, for the assembly of two more models of Chinese-made passenger cars (Lifan 620 and Lifan X60).
After Maidan: survival through the defense industry and cooperation with the EU
The Maidan and the trade and economic war with Russia, initiated by the new Kyiv government, dealt the Ukrainian automotive industry an almost irreparable blow - production volumes fell to their lowest levels since the early 90s. The Russian market was closed, and supplies to Kazakhstan and Central Asia became significantly more difficult. As a result, the net loss of the corporation in 2014 increased by 6.4 times compared to the previous year.
The company was forced to cope with situational orders. In particular, she received a certain amount of workload in connection with the ATO. In July 2014, 60 specialized buses and 60 specialized trucks were supplied to the National Guard of Ukraine for an amount of over 80 million hryvnia. In the same year, another 50 buses and 15 mobile heating points were made for the Ukrainian military. In addition, a sample of the Bars armored vehicle, developed at the design bureau of the Cherkasy Automobile Plant, was presented. The contract for their supply in the amount of 90 units was concluded in 2015.
In 2015, plans were announced to begin production of Hyundai dual-purpose vehicles at a rate of about 300 units per month, but they remained unrealized. In 2022, the corporation transferred 100 Bogdan-2251 ambulances to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The same amount of equipment, including the same ambulances and Bogdan 6317 trucks, was delivered this year. Some cars had to be returned because the quality was not good enough. On January 28, 2022, on a live public radio broadcast, Valentina Varava, a member of the Volunteer Council at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, noted that out of 100 Bogdan-2251 ambulances, 50 vehicles were transferred to the front, and 25 of them broke down without traveling 10,000 kilometers.
Automotive production has completely stopped in Ukraine

However, it is not only the defense order that allows the enterprise to stay afloat. Trolleybuses produced by the company are periodically purchased in some cities of Ukraine and even exported to Poland and the Czech Republic.
Due to the low cost of production, some European companies from Europe paid attention to Bogdan. Thus, the corporation became a contractor for the production of bodies for electric buses of the French company Bluebus. As part of the first contract in 2018, the Ukrainian manufacturer must supply 5 bodies.
Bluebus is a French company that is part of the Bollore group, specializing in the production of environmentally friendly public transport. The Bluebus electric bus has two versions: a 12-meter version, designed for 100 passengers, with a range of 180 to 250 km, and a 6-meter version, accommodating 23 passengers with a range of 120 km.
On November 22, “Bogdan” at the Lutsk Automobile Plant presented the first fully electric truck in Ukraine, manufactured by order of the Danish company Banke Electromotive. It is designed for mechanized loading of solid household waste. The ERCV27 special vehicle is capable of speeds of up to 80 km/h. The cruising range without recharging the traction batteries at full permissible weight is 220 km, and their service life reaches 12 years. The truck is equipped with combined ventilation, water heaters, a video surveillance system and air conditioning.
The press service of the Ukrainian manufacturer noted that the electric machine received positive feedback from the customer and expressed hope for the start of its serial production after completion of certification in Denmark. In total, under the current contract, Bogdan undertakes to transfer 15 units of such equipment to the customer, and Banke Electromotive’s need is about 200 vehicles per year.
Banke Electromotive is a Danish company that develops and manufactures 100% electric municipal trucks and components for the EU market. Now this is a very promising direction, since in most European cities from 2025 it is planned to completely ban the entry of cars and trucks equipped with internal combustion engines.
Thus, the Bogdan automobile corporation has every opportunity to produce high-quality and competitive products. However, the policy of the current Kyiv government contributes to the fact that it is practically not in demand on the domestic market. Instead of supporting domestic manufacturers, Ukraine often buys used foreign-made equipment. Thus, the Ukrainian automobile industry, including Bogdan, is deprived of cash flows and the opportunity to create new jobs. And those orders that the corporation receives from Europe only allow it to stay afloat and do not ensure full utilization of its production capacity. This could be achieved subject to the resumption of full-fledged economic ties with Russia, but given the current political climate, such a development is not possible.
Similarities and differences between different modifications
A suburban bus, as a rule, has more seats (from 27), a city bus - slightly less (from 16). Below are first suburban, then urban - clear evidence of a rich model range.
Depending on the goals and needs of people, the following models are produced:
The small-class Bogdan A-3017 school bus is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 121 horsepower with Euro-2 standard. A 4 manual transmission is installed here. The length, width and height of the vehicle in millimeters are 7970, 2310 and 2900. The total number of seats is 21. The commuter copy A-09212 was not particularly different. Is it just minor deviations in dimensions and the number of seats - 26.

The middle-class urban A-1445 has similar features as the A-1452, but there are only 31 seats. The A-1443 differs only in a 6-speed gearbox and an engine power of 200 horsepower according to the Euro-1 standard.
Auto Bogdan model range
Now the Lada 2110, well known to car enthusiasts, is produced by the Ukrainian corporation Bogdan, as is the station wagon of the “tenth” VAZ family, 2111. Low price, adequate consumer properties, time-tested solutions, reliable design, balanced appearance, as well as some modern innovations - all this makes the “ten "A very good product.
If in the database the Ukrainian car is an ordinary “ten” as we know it, then in higher trim levels there are very pleasant additions to the well-known design: air conditioning, electric power steering and a cabin filter. In most versions, the cars are equipped with fog lights and alloy wheels. Engines: 8- or 16-valve 1.6-liter, with a power of 80 and 89 hp. respectively. Gearbox – 5 manual transmission.
Dynamic, economical and practical - that’s what can be said about the 2110 car, which found a second life at a conveyor in Ukraine.

From repair to production.
In February 1964, the construction of the Cherkasy Automobile Repair Plant (CHARZ) began. From the very beginning it was assumed that this plant would be engaged in the overhaul of PAZ-652 buses, the design capacity of the plant base was 1.5 thousand units per year.
In 1966, by decision of the State Commission, the plant was put into operation, and by 1972 the enterprise reached its full design capacity, which continued until 1993. In 1993, its repair activities were discontinued, during which time more than 25 thousand PAZ buses of models 672 and 652 were repaired. Thanks to the reconstruction of the auto repair plant, which was carried out in 1971-1972, the plant was able to produce GO-14 products for the military -industrial complex. A new workshop was built, in which by 1993 1,235 units of these products had already been produced. Since 1992, the plant management decided to master the technology of converting IZH-2715 vans into a cargo-passenger version.
In 1994, in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated June 15, 1993, the privatization of the enterprise began. Where, on the basis of the enterprise, the Open Joint Stock Company “Cherkassy Auto Repair Plant” was created. The range of products began to increase, which was facilitated by a large-scale reorganization of production. And in 1996, on the basis of the Gazelle car, the production of a minibus was mastered and a technique was developed for converting an all-metal vehicle into a cargo version with five to seven seats and a minibus with twelve seats. For the repair and maintenance of main gas pipelines, based on the chassis of the KrAZ-260 G vehicle, we began the production of emergency mobile workshops. We also established the production of trailers for passenger cars, mastered the AMG-1 mobile repair workshops, and began re-equipping IZH and UAZ vehicles.
