In 2011, a presentation of the new generation Fiat Doblo took place in Europe, and its sales began last year. Even in fraternal Belarus, NEW Doblos in various trim levels are scurrying along the roads along with the Doblo Classic. But Russia is still inaccessible to the new product, and the question “when will we be able to taste all the delights of progress” remains open. But the classic Doblo, as before, enjoys, if not enchanting, but rather stable demand, both in cargo and passenger versions.

Let's try to figure out what is the secret of the Fiat Doblo's longevity and is it worth paying attention to it when choosing a mini-commercial? Moreover, over the more than 10-year period of production of this model, it has undergone a facelift and other improvements. What will please the current version of the Italian?

Sadly, over the past years the main thing has not happened - additional body options have not been certified, of which the Fiat Doblo family, in principle, has quite a lot. Therefore, our entire choice is limited between cargo and passenger versions, the presence or absence of a sliding door on the left side and the type of stern “gate”. The latter can be single-leaf lifting or double-leaf hinged with unequal halves 2:3. Not much…

However, inside Doblo is not stuffed with innovations - everything is like the good old days. The front panel has retained its originality and even now does not look like something from the past. Unfortunately or fortunately, I am not one of those who like to feel the interior to get tactile sensations from the plastic panel. Therefore, I do not share my colleagues’ dissatisfaction with hard plastic. For me, it is much more important that during the entire time of my raid the panel did not annoy me with squeaks and rattles.

I quite highly appreciate the presence of two sockets on the front panel. And their placement on the console tide on both sides of the gearbox joystick is generally the best solution, and the wires laid in the “glove compartment” do not interfere, and the FM modulator is at hand. In addition, a mobile phone being charged fits perfectly into the niche in front of the lever - convenient!

As a person who tries to be polite while driving, I can’t help but notice the large hazard warning button - it’s simply impossible to miss.

The layout of the second part of the cabin is close to ideal for commercial vehicles. There are no fluffy upholstery or floor carpets that collect dust and dirt. The smooth walls of the body make it possible to place boxes as compactly as possible. The rear row of seats can be folded in sections, allowing the passenger version to be converted into a combi. To be fair, I note that it will not be possible to create a perfectly flat surface, and the sofa itself, when folded, takes up quite a lot of space. In addition, a single seat on the left side in the absence of a door on the left becomes a trap when the backrest on the right is folded. It would be more logical to swap them, or... not to be greedy and immediately order the 5-door version.

Among the things that break the idyll of the layout, it is worth noting the floor tunnel. As I understand it, it was originally intended for the all-wheel drive Adventure version, which is not sold here, so in Russian realities the exhaust pipe is partially hidden in it. This “hump” on the floor does not cause any particular discomfort, and yet...

I note that the test version of the Fiat Doblo Panorama was produced in Turkey; such cars have been sold in Russia since June 2012.

I drove about 6000 km behind the wheel of a Fiat Doblo. It’s enough for a full impression of the car. Moreover, the native expanses have traditionally happily accepted people into their open pits and rocked with great pleasure on the waves of ruts.

The child of the Italian automobile industry turned out to be well prepared for such hospitality. Naturally, the high body and suspension design, which dates back to the beginning of the century, do not hold the road as tenaciously as more modern counterparts, but you quickly get used to it. A week of communication, and now you clearly know where you need to slow down a little earlier, and where to enter a turn a little smoother. In digital equivalent, at the beginning of acquaintance, this is approximately minus 10 km/h from the usual rhythm, and after 3000 km of a joint journey, the difference decreases to 5 km/h according to the speedometer. If we talk about the city, here the comfortable speed is limited to 80 km/h, and even where the speed limit is increased, you don’t want to go faster.

By the way, the use of a 75-horsepower gasoline engine leaves its mark. For normal acceleration in the city, you should keep the tachometer needle in the range from 3000 to 4000 rpm, and when overtaking on the highway, shift down one or even two gears in advance.

Actually, this is where all the discomfort ends. A tall body with short overhangs allows you to roll up close to curbs and, if necessary, drive onto them without fear of leaving the bumper there. The vertically positioned mirrors, which at first seemed narrow, actually turned out to be quite functional and, together with parking sensors (option - 8,000 rubles), allow you to park literally “one or two times”.

When focusing on them, it is worth remembering that journalistic life is very busy, so the rhythm of my movement is closer to high-speed than to moderately calm. When driving slowly, you can safely reset a liter from this data. Interestingly, the maximum distance that Doblo could travel with a full tank at a speed of 80 km/h, according to the generous computer, is 999 km. A few lines on behalf of the passengers. Say what you like, but for those who are not driving, the appearance of the car has a noticeable impact. And, getting into the cabin, they immediately begin to look for signs of an outdated design that they could blame. The seats are too hard, the seating position is too upright, and there is no cigarette lighter for the second row. The driver can only be patient for the next half hour, after which the passengers will either leave the cabin or... quietly, peacefully fall asleep on these most uncomfortable seats. Moreover, they sleep surprisingly soundly, without waking up either in potholes or in transverse and longitudinal waves, which the driver sees perfectly well and naturally feels on the steering wheel. At the same time, they are somehow not embarrassed by the fact that a person 182 cm tall can sit perfectly “behind himself” with a margin of 10–15 cm for his knees, which is a big plus on a long journey.

The amount of space above your head allows you not to be afraid of surprises from road workers, and the straight walls do not “put pressure” on your head when seating three people. Even the coat hooks are moved to the front seats so as not to block the view out the window. So, if you don’t set yourself the task of finding a “jamb,” the Fiat Doblo’s interior is suitable not only for city driving, but also for long hauls.

If we return from the global to the particular, then the situation is as follows. It is quite convenient to carry out monthly maintenance. Despite the small size of the engine compartment opening in the light, all the main elements, containers and necks are visible. The only thing I didn’t like was that the neck of the washer tank was too narrow. I would recommend immediately replenishing the Doblo spare parts with a funnel. But on the contrary, I liked the solution to the problem of replacing light bulbs in the headlights. We unscrew a couple of screws and remove the headlight assembly - it turned out to be much more convenient than squeezing your hand into the engine compartment, risking damaging the delicate halogen lamp.

Well, despite its longevity, Fiat Doblo has not lost the ability to compete with its opponents. Paradoxically, the old Italian design is now successfully serving as a competitive advantage. While all modern mini-commercials strive to become more streamlined for the sake of ephemeral fuel economy and adjust their bodies to car shapes to increase sales in the “home” car segment, Doblo still flaunts a cubic appearance, maximally adapted to transporting large cargo. This is one of the last cars on the heel market, in which the ease of loading and unloading and the capacity of the cargo compartment are not sacrificed to design delights. And this despite the fact that, unlike Europe, we have neither long-wheelbase versions nor bodies with an increased roof height.

Currently, Fiat Doblo is the most affordable offer in its class. It does not pretend to be a universal car for both work and home, but it copes with the responsibilities of a “workhorse” very well. So, those who need a roomy car in small dimensions for work in the city and its environs, do not pass by. It’s no wonder that at the COMTRANS`13 exhibition Fiat Doblo sported a “taxi” color scheme. This is precisely its role - a compromise of price, spaciousness and comfort.
