INTRODUCTION

In order to strengthen its position in the European market for vehicles with a gross weight of 3 to 6 tons, Iveco launched the next, third, generation of the Daily light commercial vehicle family in 1999. It is worth noting that models equipped with turbocharged engines are called TurboDaily. The range of models, depending on the load capacity (from 1.5 to 4 tons), includes three classes (L, S and C). The cars were produced with 8 wheelbase lengths and a total of almost 3,000 modifications. The main versions produced are: Van (van), Cab (chassis with cab) and Combi (cargo-passenger modification). In 2000, the new Iveco Daily received the prestigious title of “Van of the Year”, which undoubtedly indicates that Iveco engineers have coped with their task.

The organization of the driver's workplace brings the Daily closer to passenger cars in terms of ease of operation and comfort. Loading and unloading operations are facilitated thanks to the low loading height (680-735 mm), the presence of one or two side sliding doors with a width of 1100 mm and the installation of rear hinged doors that open to 270°.

Iveco Daily buses are perfect for comfortable transportation of passengers on urban and suburban routes.

Story

Iveco Daily commercial trucks and vans were developed by specialists from Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Officine Meccaniche as a replacement for the Fiat 241 and Fiat 238 delivery vans. The first generation Iveco Daily was produced in two versions:

  • series 35 with a total weight of 3.5 tons;
  • series 50 with a gross weight of 5.0 tons.

Initially, both modifications could be equipped with a 72-horsepower diesel engine with a volume of 2445 cc, or a 78-horsepower gasoline engine with a volume of 1971 cc. In 1985, they were added to a 2.5 liter injection turbodiesel with a power of 95 hp, installed on the Iveco Turbo Daly model.

The turbodiesel version is called Iveco Turbo Daily

Opinion

KIRILL BAZHENOV, Deputy Director for Logistics, Diet+ LLC St. Petersburg

— We use IVECO Daily light-duty trucks for the transportation of frozen food; the company currently has 34 such vehicles in its fleet. All vehicles have special bodies and refrigerated trucks on a chassis with a base of 3450 mm, a total weight of 3.5 tons and 3-liter engines. 12 cars of the latest batch are produced in 2012, the rest are from 2010 - their mileage already exceeds 75 thousand km. Our flights are mainly in St. Petersburg and its suburbs; we try not to overload the cars, although this happens occasionally. Nevertheless, the suspension and chassis on all our Dailys are still in working order, and there is no sign of replacing any parts other than “consumables”. Brake pads last 40–50 thousand km; we change them using our own repair service. All other work and maintenance is carried out at the service center of the official dealer. Almost all of the Dailys from the first batch had already had their tires replaced - before we purchased these cars, they had been in storage for a long time, which significantly reduced the tire mileage. We installed BF Goodrich tires and they run well. There were no problems with the engines in general and their fuel equipment in particular; all cars still have original clutches. On several cars, the steering column switches failed prematurely and had to be replaced. Otherwise, we spend only on fuel, filters and pads. Fuel consumption on our Daily, taking into account the operation of refrigerator compressor units, is 16–18 l/100 km.

Driver's cabin

The cabin of the Iveco Daly 50C15 is made of sheet metal processed by stamping. The design is equipped with a hood, and the main components are reinforced. To ensure safety and comfortable driving, large windows and mirrors are installed. The internal space is characterized by a large volume, which ensures free movement of the operator and two passengers.

Depending on the number of rows in the cabin, the number of seats is determined - 3 or 7 (including the driver's). Iveco 50C15 finishing materials are of high quality, they are durable and wear-resistant. The driver's seat on springs has adjustable lumbar support and a heating system. All seats are equipped with seat belts with tensioners and head restraints.

The cabin is as comfortable as in a passenger car. The steering wheel can be adjusted in two planes. Air conditioning is available as an option.

The upholstery is made of insulating materials, the chairs are covered with fabric. This guarantees comfortable working conditions. The design of the Iveco 50C15 cabin is mounted on rubber cushions with shock-absorbing properties. The pedals are easy to use and the cabin has plenty of storage space.

The engine of such a small-tonnage car is very reliable, truly durable and at the same time it can be considered economical. It was developed by Iveco Motors itself, which is why the engine fully meets the requirements for cars of this class. Just look at the 4-cylinder engine that all cars of the Iveco Daly family are equipped with. Absolutely all engines in this family are diesel, also 16-valve, in-line and, of course, equipped with a second-generation “Common Rail” direct fuel injection system and intercooled turbochargers.

Engines are divided into two types, with a displacement of 2.3 liters and 3.0 liters. It is these volumes that help ensure the ideal ratio of engine mass and power.

All mechanical parts were carefully worked out and precise adjustments were made to the electronic equipment itself, which, in turn, led to the lowest fuel consumption. Iveco produces all the necessary units for Daly exclusively on its own, which is why we can talk about achieving such indicators as power with minimal fuel consumption.

The designers did not forget about reducing operating costs. For example, the interval for replacing the engine oil and oil filter itself will be 40,000 km, while the air filter can be replaced at 80,000 km (in Russia this figure is 20,000 km). The operation of the engine itself truly gives only one pleasure when driving this car. The constant value of the torque itself over a fairly wide speed range makes it easy to achieve such powerful characteristics; the excellent dynamics of the car itself will be optimal under absolutely any driving conditions. The driver and passengers can appreciate the performance of the engine, since it operates almost silently in the Iveco Daily.

Chassis

The design of the Iveco Daly 50C15 car was developed taking into account working conditions of average complexity. For the manufacture of the frame, metal with a thickness of more than 4 mm is used, which ensures the resistance of the elements to torsional forces.

The suspension can be installed in several versions. A torsion bar with anti-roll bars, or an independent one with shock-absorbing mechanisms is mounted in front. At the rear it is possible to use a spring or pneumatic design. In the latter case, the height of the IVECO Daily 50C15 can be adjusted.
