Stylists Foton Motors Co. They honestly tried to find their own motives in the design of this car: a huge chrome-plated false radiator grille with a large emblem, huge headlights of an unusual shape. But still, the most striking detail of the exterior was the inscription “Foton”. It doesn’t matter that in Chinese it is pronounced “futian”, the main thing is that in Russian it sounds clear and understandable - “Photon”.

Country of origin

No, it was not for nothing that we chose this car for a test drive. Recently, Foton Ollin trucks often began to appear on the roads, and we could no longer ignore them. “One more Chinese, one less,” I thought something like this before the test, “they are all the same anyway”... It turned out, not all!

Pleasant surprises began from the very first minutes. I open the cabin door and am amazed at how smoothly the door lock worked. It would not be surprising if in front of me there was a European truck, or at least a South Korean one, but it’s “Chinese”!!! Or have we already developed a biased attitude?

I climb into the cabin and see a very neat, nice interior. The front panel with a pronounced massive central part looks in the spirit of the times and was clearly developed recently. It even has a special place for a fuel credit card and a 0.33 liter tin with a cooling drink. But the antediluvian engines of the climate control unit, which migrated here from the previous model, pretty much spoiled the overall positive picture.

I was pleased with its fashionable shape of the instrument cluster under the rounded visor; the white instrument scales with blue numbers look very stylish. I would prefer something less avant-garde. But the standard instrumentation on the Foton includes a tachometer, which is still rare on Chinese cars of this class. The simple radio tape recorder, familiar to all “Chinese”, was somewhat puzzling with its bright blue backlight, which catches the eye even during the day. In my opinion, they went too far with the backlight, although according to the idea, it should apparently be combined with the white and blue instrument scales.

The steering column is adjustable in height and tilt, and the driver's seat moves back and forth in a wide range and has a tilt-adjustable backrest. However, this is already a familiar set. I was pleasantly surprised by the fabric, and not the standard Chinese oilcloth, upholstery of the seats. Moreover, these seat covers are secured with Velcro and can be removed if necessary. The driver and outer passenger have high seat backs, combined with headrests, and the low back of the middle passenger seat reclines to form a comfortable dining table with cup holders. But that is not all! With a slight movement of the hand, we open the lid, and the table becomes a spacious tray for accompanying papers.

I examine the cabin and notice that the flooring in it is laid neatly. What are those buttons on the driver's door armrest? Yes, these are electric windows and central locking! And this is all in the basic configuration? I just want to ask again - is this really a Chinese truck or did we accidentally make the wrong brand?

He was born to be a van

In Russia, various van bodies are most often mounted on imported truck chassis with a carrying capacity of 1.5 tons. Flatbed bodies are now in less demand, and heavy special equipment, such as loader cranes or tow truck platforms, require heavier chassis. The Foton Ollin 1039 we tested was no exception. An isothermal van from Ryazan with a useful volume of 12 m3 was installed on it. The body is made of sandwich panels with polyurethane foam insulation and is designed for transporting frozen products.

We did not focus on this van, as we were warned that it was made to order and does not reflect the entire range of products.

Key to start!

The “woke” diesel did not disappoint with its noise. Even despite the fact that under the passenger seat there is a special hatch for access to the engine - an eternal loophole for noise. The efforts that had to be put into the controls of the Photon turned out to be unrealistically small. This applies not only to the pedals, but also to the gearshift lever and steering. But if everything is clear with the steering wheel - it is equipped with a hydraulic booster, then the ease with which gears were changed, the clutch or brakes worked was amazing. According to subjective feelings, Foton in this regard will give odds to all other Chinese trucks.

As a rule, all Chinese one and a half ton trucks behave the same when on the move. They are equipped with a low-power engine with peak torque at low speeds. After 60 km/h, these trucks cease to be dynamic in the usual sense of the word. Foton Ollin BJ1039 is slightly better than its competitors in this regard, since it has a more powerful engine, so we understand the style of its behavior on the road. If you actively work with the gas pedal, the Foton accelerates decently and does not lose this ability even at a speed of 70–75 km/h. But then, unfortunately, stagnation sets in.

It’s very easy to drive the “Chinese” in tight city traffic. A short wheelbase, small overhangs and a small turning radius make the car very maneuverable, and large side windows and a developed mirror system provide good visibility.

The formidable enemy of the GAZelle

It is no secret that, entering the Russian market, Foton Ollin BJ1039 enters into direct competition with the GAZelle semi-truck. And if earlier I was confident that the domestic semi-truck was at least slightly better than its Chinese counterparts, now my confidence has been shaken. The only thing that can be attributed to the advantage of the GAZelle is its low cost, while the one and a half ton Foton is still significantly more expensive. But if we consider these machines from the point of view of the totality of consumer qualities, then the Foon Ollin BJ1039 clearly has more of them.

Foton – made in Ukraine

In Ukraine, Foton trucks have been assembled at the car assembly plant in Cherkassy since 2004. The vehicle lineup consists of three trucks (BJ1046 with a carrying capacity of 1.8 tons, BJ1043 and BJ1049 with a load capacity of 3 tons), which are sold in Ukraine under two brands - Foton and Forland. The Chinese-Ukrainian joint venture has immediate plans to increase the share of Foton vehicles in the Ukrainian truck market to 15–20%. For comparison: based on the results of 10 months. In 2006 it was only 6%.

But the most interesting thing is that Foton cars assembled in Ukraine represent a completely different family of “Fotons” than those supplied to Russia, although in their main characteristics they correspond to each other. The marketing policy of Chinese automakers is truly strange and incomprehensible!

Foton Ollin family

The Foton Ollin family is represented on the Russian market by three models, differing in carrying capacity: Foton Ollin BJ1039 (1.5 t), Foton Ollin BJ1049 (3 t) and Foton Ollin BJ1069 (5 t). All cars are similar in appearance, as they are equipped with a similar cabin, and they can only be distinguished by the size of their wheelbase (2600, 3360 and 3800 mm, respectively). Internally, the cars of the Ollin family differ more noticeably. The smallest model is equipped only with a licensed Isuzu 92.3 hp engine; the BJ1049 can be equipped with both Isuzu and Perkins 110 hp power units. And the heaviest Ollin model is equipped with only 137-horsepower Perkins diesel engines.

Bleeding the brake system

Air in the brake system can cause dangerous brake failure while the vehicle is in motion.

Bleeding the brake system must be done, making sure that the level of brake fluid in the expansion tank does not fall below the low level mark, and also that the brake lines and hoses are disconnected only in those places where it is necessary to perform the bleeding procedure.

The pumping procedure is carried out by two people.

1. Bleed the hydraulic brake system in the following order:

Right rear wheel → brake force distributor (based on rear axle load or tilt angle, if equipped) → right front wheel → left front wheel → hydraulic cylinder (if equipped)

2. Make sure that the place where the pumping procedure will be carried out is well ventilated. Start the engine and let it run to create the required vacuum level.
