The K-744 tractor belongs to the KIROVETS series of machines and has an impressive range of applications. This machine is called ENERGY DENSE due to the number of areas of use. K-744 is widely used as a tool for cleaning roads and surrounding areas. The machine is a continuation and legal successor of the K-700 model tractor, the production of which was suspended in 2002.

This multifunctional heavy-duty vehicle, fifth traction class, has proven itself so well that the series continues to this day. All four versions are united by a powerful engine, thanks to which the tractors are able to perform work that is impossible for other equipment, in difficult conditions and with any attachments.
The fourth generation of Kirov residents received “registration” from farmers and workers, from miners and lumberjacks, from road workers and in many other professional fields.
Purpose
The main advantage of the KIROVETS series tractors and the K-744 model is their versatility. The unit belongs to the fifth traction class of machines, which allows their use in almost all areas of agricultural work. Tractor used:
- During arable and cultivation activities.
- When working with small seeders and large seeding complexes.
- As a tool for transporting massive loads in the shortest possible time.
- For silage and fertilizer distribution.
- When clearing roads of snow and dirt.
Design features
The first tractors of the K-744 series were equipped with turbocharged eight-cylinder YaMZ-238ND5 engines. This powerful four-stroke engine is equipped with a cold start system and a water-oil cooled radiator.
Power plant 300 hp. consumes 174 g/l per hour at a maximum crankshaft speed of 1900 rpm. The large fuel tank capacity of 630 liters makes long-term operation possible without refueling. The 24-speed Powershift gearbox supports 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds.
Using hydraulic gears, speed mode switching is achieved without loss of power. A hydraulic pump with a capacity of 180 l/min ensures the operation of trailed and attached equipment.
Greater stability, better cross-country ability and maneuverability are given to the tractor by a frame articulated by a hinge system. The turning radius of the huge machine is only 7.9 m. To reduce the impact on the fertile soil layer, double wheels and lower tire pressure are used.
Two drive axles, made of high-strength steel alloys with a rigid type of suspension and especially a self-locking differential and planetary type final drives, distinguish the series from other similar units. The pneumatic system allows the towed equipment and both axles to be controlled separately.
A fairly sealed cabin, with a panoramic view, is equipped with an on-board computer, heating, air conditioning and sound insulation systems. The seat and steering column are adjustable to the driver's parameters. The roof structure can also be changed.
Attachments are attached using a three-point scheme. Trailers are attached using a pendulum fastening.

The K-744R is equipped with a sprung front axle suspension and a Cummins 300 power plant with 306 hp. with a torque of 2000 rpm. Additionally, the cabin is reinforced with a durable frame.
K-744 P2 is equipped with a Mercedes engine. A slight decrease in crankshaft speed to 1800 rpm is compensated by a more powerful power plant, up to 401 hp, mounted using German technology.
And the most powerful final model - K-744 P3 - has all the advantages of the previous version, supplemented by a more advanced hydraulic distributor and the ability to install heavy ballast.
The Kirovets 744R tractor is ideal for tillage. When plowing a field with a plow, this technique allows you to cultivate up to 150 hectares per day.
History of creation
The machine was designed on the basis of an outstanding Russian manufacturer. The tractor was designed by the group, in particular, the St. Petersburg branch. Tractors of the K-744R series are equipped with a modern high-performance hydraulic system of working equipment (HW). The LS system with axial piston pumps provides highly efficient operation with modern seeding systems thanks to its controlled flow.
GRO for K-744R series tractors – main parameters:
- hydraulic fluid flow – maximum 180 l/min;
- at the outlet of the quick-connect coupling the pressure is 185 bar;
- pressure in the hydraulic system – maximum 210 bar;
- four adjustable hydraulic lines for aggregation with hydraulics of additional attached equipment;
- drainage and free flow lines.
Four sets (pairs) of quickly connected breaking devices are designed to connect the necessary hydraulic lines of agricultural machines or implements connected to tractors to the tractor hydraulic lines. Bursting devices prevent oil from leaking out of a hydraulic hose operating under high pressure in the event of an emergency disconnection or rupture.
The hydraulic accumulator (absolutely sealed, under high pressure) reduces the peak load that occurs when switching spools on the hydraulic valve of equipment in the pump-hydraulic valve section.
To reduce losses in the hydraulic system and eliminate overheating when working with a seeder, which is equipped with a hydraulic fan drive motor, the tractor spare parts system includes a kit for free drainage (bypassing the hydraulic distributor directly into the hydraulic tank) and an additional hydraulic motor drainage kit.
Pneumatic system
The three-circuit pneumatic system is designed for smooth braking of the front and rear axle wheels and trailer wheels, operation of the hydraulic accumulator drive of the parking brake system, air bleed for tire inflation and towing, and blowing of the cassette air cleaner.
The pneumatic system has three circuits independent of each other. If one circuit is damaged, the other two will work without interruption. The 1st and 2nd circuits are designed to brake the front and rear wheels, the 3rd circuit controls the parking brake accumulator and trailer brakes.
Specific fuel consumption
How to correctly estimate the actual fuel consumption for the actual operating conditions of the tractor, based on the parameters indicated in the technical specifications showing the specific fuel consumption?
To calculate fuel consumption in grams per hour, you need to multiply the specific consumption parameter by the rated power. Next, the resulting parameter must be multiplied by 1000, so the consumption in grams is converted to kilograms. Then you need to divide the resulting figure by the density of diesel fuel - standard 0.86. The result of the calculations is fuel consumption in liters per hour.

The reason is that the calculation is carried out for conditions of maximum equipment productivity - loading with additional equipment, working in a straight line without stopping. In field conditions, any modification of the Kirovets tractor consumes significantly less fuel.

Energy saturation
Kirovets tractors are characterized by high energy saturation. This term means that the equipment is able to operate for a long time at a high level of efficiency, which is especially important when processing large areas. This characteristic also ensures that the tractor operates in difficult climatic conditions, for example, with large temperature differences in summer and winter, which are typical for the temperate climate zone.
Kirovets equipment is available in two versions - with a Russian diesel engine, and with a Mercedes-Benz engine.
According to the advertising booklet of the Kirov Machine-Building Plant, the energy-rich all-wheel drive wheeled tractor of the Kirovets K-744R brand is the most frequently purchased tractor in Russia. The serial range of this model is represented by modifications K-744Р1, K-744Р2 and K-744Р3, which differ in engine power. It is 300-390 hp. Also, the differences between the modifications of the K-744R tractor consist in the availability of devices for mounted units.
Additional equipment. Ability to work on crawler tracks

The Kirovets K-744R tractors were successfully tested in field conditions when operating on tracked propulsion systems. This innovative version of the Kirovets provides extremely low ground pressure, while maintaining maneuverability, compactness and maneuverability. Less soil compaction means higher yields in the end. And greater traction and grip, with an engine of the same power, means quite significant savings in diesel fuel. At the same time, the process of replacing wheels with tracked movers is not something “super complex” and is done quite quickly.
Cabin
The St. Petersburg Tractor Plant began producing Kirovets tractors with a modified new cabin of the K-744R series in January 2016. This stage of modernization is aimed at significantly improving the working conditions of the tractor driver.
The main differences of the new cabin are enhanced sound insulation, expansion of the viewing sector due to panoramic windows, a modified steering column with a built-in multifunctional instrument panel, the driver's seat has become more convenient and comfortable, the air conditioning and ventilation system has been improved and optimized, and a modern audio system has been added.

"Kirovets" K-744 and its manufacturer today
Joint Stock Company "Petersburg Tractor Plant" (PTZ) is an integral part of the industrial group OJSC "Kirov Plant". This is one of the very first machine-building plants in the country (founded in 1801), the founder of our tractor manufacturing - the first tractors came out of the gates of this enterprise in 1924.
Both during the years of the Soviet Union and in modern times, the Kirovets brand is the main, well-known PTZ brand in the post-Soviet space and abroad. In July 2022, the plant celebrated the 55th anniversary of the production of the 1st serial Kirovets tractor. In total, over 480 thousand Kirov vehicles were produced over these years (of which more than 450 thousand were produced during the years of the USSR).
Petersburg Tractor Plant is the only manufacturer of energy-rich wheeled agricultural tractors in the Russian Federation. The basis of PTZ’s modern production program is the Kirovets K-744 tractor family. Currently, the company produces 8 modifications of this equipment, as part of the modernized K-744R series. The power of these tractors varies from 300 to 428 horsepower. Kirovtsy also produces 17 types of road construction and specialized machines.
Official representative offices and dealer centers of PTZ operate in more than 50 regions of the Russian Federation and the CIS. The plant traditionally takes an active part in state programs for providing agricultural producers with equipment - through the mediation of Rosagroleasing and in accordance with government decree No. 1432. The structure of the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant includes 10 main workshops, where the full production cycle is carried out, plus the necessary auxiliary structures.
The plant is better equipped than all other Russian tractor manufacturers with advanced high-tech equipment: in 2015 and 2016, more than two billion rubles were invested in technical re-equipment and modernization of production. And after the development and start of production of our own transmission of a modern system, there is a plan to build a separate new high-tech transmission production facility - an investment project with a total cost of 4 billion rubles.
PTZ is one of the few domestic enterprises that, despite all the crisis phenomena in the economy, shows an increase in the following indicators from year to year: net revenue and the number of tractors sold; number of staff and average salary; market share in percentage terms in all regions of Russia. Kirovets is the leader in the segment of wheeled tractors with power from 250 hp. in Russia and Kazakhstan. In the 2010s, deliveries of Kirovets tractors were made to countries such as Germany, France, the USA, Canada, Thailand and Australia.
Basic equipment of Kirovets tractors to 744r
The basic configuration of the tractor includes a category 4 attachment with a lifting capacity of 8.5 tons, as well as lower link hooks from Waltershield. The hydraulic system consists of 8 outputs of working hydraulic lines that respond to load. This system is called Load Sensing. The working fluid enters the system using a pump only when it is needed for the operation of the attachments.
The driver's booth is made of a continuous metal sheathing located on rubber shock absorbers. There are safety plates to ensure the safety of the operator in the event of a tractor overturning or heavy objects, such as pieces of rock, falling when working in quarries. This protective technology has the international name Falling Objects Protective Structure.
A distinctive feature of Russian-made Kirovets brand tractors from their Chinese counterparts is the use of forging, rather than rolling, in the technological processing of the machine’s component parts. Gears, shafts and housing parts are produced by the plant at its own expense. The production process is automated and there is a strict computer system for quality control of parts.
Although the production equipment and software are German, all parts bear the mark of the Kirov plant. Forging differs from rolling in the reliability and fundamental nature of the production process. In addition, in the manufacture of parts for Kirovets, chemical processing of mechanically finished parts is used, in particular, sulfonation and saturation with vanadium.
Review of the “deep modernization” of the K-744 in 2014
During the modernization, a number of improvements and enhancements were made in the design of the K-744R tractors. In particular, Kirovets has become quieter. Noise reduction in the operator's workplace was achieved thanks to the added layer of thermal and noise insulation on the parts of the frame and interior of the cab. As well as the use of multi-layer flooring.
The operator's workplace has become generally more convenient and ergonomic. These improvements continued with the introduction at the end of 2016 of a fundamentally new transmission control system of the “Command Post” type. New ergonomic valve control handles and an improved accelerator control handle have been introduced. To better protect the operator from the sun's rays, a new system of curtains on the windshield was introduced.

The Kirovets cabin has become cooler in the summer. The efficiency of the air conditioning system has been increased by installing a compressor with a two-strand drive.
The air cleaner was made of a new design, with a cyclone - for ease of maintenance and reliable engine operation. The new design of agricultural hitch has become an even more universal design - suitable for domestic and imported agricultural implements and devices of both categories 3 and 4. The basic configuration of the tractors was prepared for the installation of GLONASS monitoring systems, which can collect and systematize tractor operating parameters using more than 15 indicators at once.

The attachment of the K-744R tractors was equipped with reinforced lower links and galvanized vertical and horizontal braces. We have introduced an improved control system for the EHR attachment (but this is an additional option). This is an electro-hydraulic system for positioning agricultural implements, ensuring full operation with reversible plows and other mounted and semi-mounted implements that do not have adjustable support wheels.
Another additional option is a new drawbar designed to handle particularly heavy towed implements.
The new towing device in the modernized K-744R can withstand a vertical static load of 4 tons, the diameter of the hitch pin is 51 mm.
The hydraulics of the working equipment have also been worked out in order to increase the reliability of the working equipment and the ease of its operation. The flows from the hydraulic tank that feed the steering and work equipment pumps were separated. We added a kit for combining sections of the hydraulic distributor to the spare parts kit. It is designed to connect the hydraulic motor of a large seeding complex, requiring a flow of up to 140 liters per minute. The hydraulic system as a whole has fewer parts and connections, a new multi-grade oil has been introduced - reliability and performance have increased when working in severe frosts.
The power take-off mechanism, offered as additional equipment, began to be equipped with replaceable power take-off shafts and a soft start throttle.
Electrical equipment has become well suited to connect to both 24-volt and 12-volt electrical systems found on trailed work equipment. To eliminate peak voltages, a voltage limiter was introduced into the tractor, and for quick and convenient connection of external equipment, 12V and 24V sockets are now installed on the rear wings of the K-744R tractor.
The K-744R has become both more accurate and easier to control. An improved steering system with an NSh-80 hydraulic pump, a metering pump and a Danfoss flow amplifier has increased the reliability of tractor control at low engine speeds and helped reduce noise in the cabin.
The K-744R has generally become more convenient to maintain. In particular, the tractor is equipped with a spacious box in which it is easy and convenient to place tools and consumables, technical fluids and parts of agricultural implements. An informative “Lubrication Chart” was placed on the surface of this box for quickly carrying out scheduled maintenance.
Filling with oil in the modernized K-744R takes less time, since the oil filler neck has been moved to a more convenient and suitable location. The interval for purging radiators has been increased, and this procedure itself has become more convenient. The radiator block area is now protected from chaff and small debris by a protective panel. All radiator blocks are made with folding sections, each of which can be easily and quickly accessed.
Inflating wheels or blowing out filter elements in the field has now become quite easy. An additional connection port was installed in the Kirovets pneumatic system, and the tractor was supplemented with a set of devices for pumping and purging.
After modernization, valve adjustment on engines of the Tutaevsky Motor Plant has become easier and faster. The new design of the hood arch makes it possible to reduce a number of labor-intensive tractor maintenance operations. The cardan transmission was equipped with a quick-release driveshaft between the half-frames. Due to this, when replacing the driveshaft, the need to uncouple the semi-frames is eliminated, and the repair time is reduced significantly.
We increased the reliability of the promotional pore due to the use of closed-type bearings 6218ZZC3. There is no need for forced lubrication of bearings. Simplified maintenance of the rear axle. For better protection from dirt and convenient control, the rear axle breather was moved higher and located behind the fuel tank.
Prices for routine maintenance were fixed at the level recommended by PTZ price list. Intervals for routine maintenance have been increased to 250 engine hours. And the warranty period for all tractors of the K-744R family was increased to 2 years, or 3 thousand engine hours.
Finally, the appearance of the tractor has also been slightly changed, with plastic fenders and a new plastic roof design. These elements began to be made from more modern and durable plastic, which also better preserved the brightness and richness of color.
