Motor oil for YaMZ 238 engine
YaMZ 238 is a diesel engine designed for installation in buses and heavy vehicles. It is the successor to the YaAZ-204 and YaAZ-206 engines. The new power unit was developed to replace outdated engines that had high consumption and did not meet environmental standards. As a result, the Yaroslavl plant created the YaMZ-236/238 engine family, which was installed on MAZ-500, KrAZ-6322b, KrAZ-6322, KrAZ-255B and other popular models. Among them were special vehicles, including K-700 tractors, construction equipment and armored personnel carriers.

Classification, designation and technical requirements." * GOST 17479.1-85 – Standard “Motor oils. Classification and designation." * API – American Petroleum Institute.
Yaroslavl Motor Plant has been a leader among domestic manufacturers of automotive and tractor diesel engines for more than 60 years in developing the necessary requirements for motor oils.
The year 1940 was marked by the release of the YaAZ-204 engine, and it was then that it was necessary to launch a completely new product on the market, since trucks with the new YaAZ-204 engine, even with the best oils without additives, did not have time to operate even 160 hours! They failed after 100-150 hours of operation. Coking of the piston rings or complete loss of mobility - this is what caused the engine to stop. The sulfur contained in the fuel, as well as oxidation and polymerization products formed from the oil due to exposure to high temperatures, firmly coke the piston rings in the grooves.
It is worth understanding which oils form strong oil films and prevent coking of piston rings, do not form tar deposits, prevent the formation of deposits in the exhaust system, and also eliminate carbon deposits on spark plugs and have excellent anti-corrosion and anti-wear properties. For example, synthetic oils - they are perfectly adapted to new types of fuel and are environmentally friendly.
By the end of the 50s, the Yaroslavl Motor Plant produced two diesel engines, YaMZ-236 and YaMZ-238. These engines required oils with more effective additives. Subsequently, each new release of YaMZ diesel engines necessitated an increase in the level of performance properties of motor oils used in these engines.
Today, YaMZ has a standard RD 37.319.034-97, which specifies all the requirements for the physical, chemical and operational properties of motor oils used on YaMZ engines. This standard establishes the procedure for admitting motor oils to YaMZ engines. This document also additionally specifies a set of test methods for motor oils to which oils of various groups are subjected.
According to the classification of motor oils (API - American Petroleum Institute), four groups of YaMZ oils correspond to the following four classes:
- Group of motor oils YaMZ-1-97 with class CC for highly accelerated engines operating in difficult conditions, without supercharging or with moderate supercharging.
The YaMZ-2-97 group of motor oils with class CD is a group of oils designed for high-speed turbocharged diesel engines with maximum engine power. Engines of this type operate at high pressure and high speed, so they require enhanced anti-wear additives with anti-carbon properties.
The YaMZ-3-02 group of motor oils with class CF , which meets the environmental requirements of Euro-1, is used in off-road vehicles, engines with split injection, as well as in engines running on fuel with a sulfur content of more than 0.5%. CF class oil group replaces CD .
According to the Russian classification of motor oils GOST 17479.1-85 (by purpose and level of performance properties), used in cars, tractors, diesel locomotives, agricultural, marine, road and other equipment, the first three groups are equivalent to G2, D2 and E2.
According to GOST 17479.1-85, YaMZ engines use winter, summer and all-season oils, motor oil viscosity classes 8, 10 and 5z/10, 5z/14, 6z/14.
Domestic oil M-6Z/10V also successfully passes tests of the Yaroslavl Motor Plant for compliance with the YaMZ-1-97 group of motor oils. It is distinguished by its versatility, as it is intended for all-season use in diesel and gasoline engines. Most often it is used by owners of a mixed fleet of cars and motor vehicles.
Oils such as M-8DM and M-10DM, tested in accordance with GOST 8581-78, are used on turbocharged engines, and in naturally aspirated engines they can be used with a twice as long shift period. But usually M-8G2 and M-10G2 motor oils are used in naturally aspirated diesel engines.
The Yaroslavl Motor Plant produces diesel engines with a power range from 110 to 588 kW. YaMZ diesel engines are installed on various trucks, road and construction equipment (tractors, dump trucks, truck cranes, excavators). YaMZ diesel engines are also used in agricultural and industrial machinery, and in total YaMZ diesel engines are used in more than 300 different types of equipment produced in Russia and the CIS countries.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with the detailed table of recommended motor oils for YaMZ engines, which you can always purchase from us. We have motor oils for YaMZ engines, spare parts for trucks and a large selection of other various auto components that may be useful for your car.

When to change engine oil
The oil change period for the YaMZ 238 engine is 10-15 thousand km or once a year, depending on the condition of the lubricant. Under favorable conditions, as well as on intercity and international routes, the oil change period is the longest. Or vice versa, in urban conditions it is recommended to change the oil much more often. This requires timely monitoring of the condition of the liquid, which over time may become cloudy or acquire a specific burning odor. In addition, signs of spoiled oil include insufficient levels, wear debris in the form of sediment, and a dark color.
Reviews
Maxim, Lipetsk region. I have a flatbed Kamaz with a YaMZ-238 diesel engine and a semi-trailer. A powerful and quite passable truck that does not require maintenance, unlike foreign cars, is what is needed for the harsh Russian conditions.
Valentin, Sverdlovsk. I work in severe frost in deep snowdrifts in the Urals with a YaMZ-238 engine. There are no problems with cross-country ability and power reserves - this is enough for me to perform the tasks of pulling out stuck cars or transporting cargo. But there is no comfort, except that this engine produces heat well into the cabin. It makes noise like a tractor, but this can be forgiven for a workhorse.
How much oil to fill in YaMZ 238
Years of production – 1960-2014
The YaMZ-238 is based on a power supply system with a mechanical injection pump and direct fuel injection. The camber of the cylinder block contains the intake manifolds, and the OHV valve train is located in the head and is driven through rocker arms. The lower camshaft is mounted above the crankshaft and is driven through two gears located at the front end of the internal combustion engine. The rods are equipped with roller pushers. To ensure uniform flashes every 90 degrees, the crankpins of the crankshaft are located at the appropriate angle (90 degrees). YaMZ-238 has a liquid cooling system, as well as high-strength cast iron liners and spring inlet/exhaust valves. With a working volume of 15 liters, engine power can reach between 235-420 hp. With. depending on modification.
Reliability, problems and repair of YaMZ-536
A new modern 6-cylinder in-line engine began to be produced in Yaroslavl in 2012 and is being installed instead of the YaMZ-656. This is a joint development of Avtodiesel and the Austrian company AVL List. This engine uses a cast iron cylinder block with wet cast iron liners and oil injectors. The block contains a steel crankshaft with a piston stroke of 128 mm (main journals - 88 mm, connecting rod journals - 76 mm), steel connecting rods and pistons with a diameter of 105 mm. This provides a working volume of 6.65 liters.
The block has a 16-valve cast iron head. The intake valves have a diameter of 36 mm, and the exhaust valves are 34 mm. The camshaft is still installed in the block and rotates using two gears. The valves need to be adjusted every 30 thousand km, if necessary. Valve clearances: intake 0.3-0.4 mm, exhaust 0.4-0.5 mm.
These engines are equipped with Common rail injection with a Bosch CP3.3 NH-MD pump, injection pressure - 1800 bar. Oil pressure (warm engine): 4.1-6.5 kgf/cm2. This engine is equipped with a TKR-80.05.12 turbocharger.
The 536th engine has a Bosch EDC7 UC31 control unit.
The Yaroslavl 6-cylinder in-line engine has a close relative - YaMZ-534.

YaMZ-536 malfunctions
Here you need to monitor the condition of the USR, where carbon deposits accumulate and the valve sticks. This can be solved either by regular cleaning or by plugging the EGR and flashing the ECU to operate without this valve. The engine may also consume oil. In this case, check the valve guides; they may wear out and allow oil to flow through them. The turbine lasts approximately 250-300 thousand km, plus or minus. Before this mileage, you need to monitor its condition so that a dead turbine does not incur other costs. In the event of a turbocharger failure, it is advisable to install an analogue of BorgWarner B2G. There are cases of turbine failure even before 50 thousand kilometers. In general, the motor does not have a very positive reputation; it is less reliable than its older brother YaMZ-650 and requires a more attentive attitude in everything. Do everything possible on your own: use only high-quality fuel, high-quality oil, regularly maintain, do not skimp, and perhaps problems will bypass you. Autodiesel says that an oil change is required after every 30 thousand km, but if the sulfur content in the fuel exceeds 0.2%, then the oil needs to be changed 2 times more often.
