In the eighties, the Minsk Automobile Plant changed the basic family of large-tonnage trucks. MAZ 5335, which is a modernization of the already obsolete 500th family, gave way to the new 5336 on the assembly line.

Over time, the new product gave rise to the release of various modifications. One of them is the MAZ 5731 “Kupava” isothermal van for transporting products. The vehicle was launched in 1999 in Belarus on chassis 533603. The vehicle is designed for long-distance transportation and is designed to work both single and with a trailer as part of a road train.

Body

Features an all-metal, rear-loading design. It is assembled from sandwich panels and sheathed with galvanized sheets inside and out. The outer sheet also has a polymer coating. The floor is also made of sandwich panels and reinforced.

The van maintains its temperature thanks to the isothermal properties of the material used. Upon request, depending on the purpose and type of cargo transported, the body can be equipped with:

• refrigeration unit;
• heater;
• lifting tailgate with a lifting capacity of 1.5 tons.

Cabin

The MAZ 5731 model has a double seat, with two sleeping places. For access to the engine, the cabin is equipped with a tilting mechanism. Seats with spring suspension. Dashboard made of plastic. The devices are located in accordance with European standards and are informative. The steering wheel is equipped with a hydraulic booster.

The salon is ascetic without frills, but it is spacious inside. There is good noise and vibration insulation, which creates conditions for comfortable work for the driver.

Engine

Several types are installed in the MAZ 5731. The most common are YaMZ-236BE and YaMZ-238DE. 236. The latter is a four-stroke V-shaped six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a power of 250 hp.

The 238th model is already a powerful V8 for vehicles that work primarily with trailers. It has 330 horsepower. There is also a turbine here. The operation of this motor is accompanied by a characteristic whistle.

Transmission

The YaMZ238M gearbox is an eight-speed manual with a divider. Forward gears are equipped with synchronizers. The clutch is double-disc mechanical. The cardan consists of two shafts with additional support.

Suspension

The front axle suspension consists of two longitudinal semi-elliptical springs. The rear axle rests on main and additional springs. Anti-roll bars are installed both front and rear.

Brake system

MAZ 5731 is equipped with working, parking, spare and auxiliary braking systems. The working system is pneumatic, dual-circuit. Each circuit is responsible for the braking mechanisms of its axis. Brakes on all wheels are drum brakes. An anti-lock braking system is installed.

From the beginning of the first releases to the present day, the car has been constantly modernized and improved. The main competitors of the MAZ 5731 are used foreign cars made in Europe.

The manufacturer provides a warranty of 200 thousand kilometers, or two years of operation. An increased warranty is possible for an additional fee. TO-1 is performed at 17,000 km, and TO-2 at 32,000 km.

Before we had time to unsubscribe about the cooperation of MAZ with the GeesinkNorba company, news came about another emerging tandem. Now we are talking about the no less famous company FAUN. Moreover, if with the Dutch we are talking only about garbage trucks, then cooperation with the Germans seems to cover a wider spectrum. Currently we are talking about two models, assembled in the same Mogilevtransmash workshop, specializing in the installation of all kinds of superstructures.

The armed FAUN Variopress 514 installation on the MAZ-5340B2 chassis eventually turned into the MAZ-5917B2-F10 garbage truck. A fourteen-cubic hopper with feed loading is designed to transport 6200 kg of household waste, which, after all, is 123 standard domestically produced containers with a capacity of 0.8 m3.

The second model is the MAZ-5917B2-F10 sweeper, created on the basis of the same MAZ-5340B2. The FAUN SympaJet 6RL vacuum unit, which is the main feature of the machine, is quite well known on the Russian market. The unit is noteworthy in that it is equipped with an autonomous 4-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 904 LA engine with a power of 102 hp, which is located on the frame and allows for high-quality surface cleaning regardless of the carrier’s engine speed. In one pass, the machine clears 2300 mm of the roadway without protruding beyond the standard traffic lane, and the 6-cubic-meter waste bin allows you to stay on the route for quite a long time before it is filled.

Representatives of MAZ do not disclose what exactly this expansion of foreign partners is connected with, but for consumers it is always nice to have the opportunity to choose.

Types of semi-trailers

In the product line for trucks, there are two types of bodies: isothermal and refrigerators, equipped with modern refrigeration equipment of any complexity.

Initially, the company produces bodies with a maximum thermal conductivity coefficient of 0.4, while a number of models are equipped with refrigeration equipment, based on customer preferences, turning an ordinary isothermal semi-trailer into a refrigerator with specified characteristics.
