Distinctive features
Equipment from the MTZ plant is produced on the basis of Belarus tractors . The devices are produced in auxiliary workshops. Today it is a large complex that produces a wide range of high-quality equipment.
The first walk-behind tractor went on sale in 1978 . It was called a walking tractor. It was quickly appreciated, noting the excellent quality of land cultivation.
IMPORTANT!
The main distinctive feature of walk-behind tractors is the presence of a tractor chassis, due to which it can be used to transport trailers with large cargo.
The devices are capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 kilometers per hour thanks to four forward gears . For simpler work, a speed of 2.5 km/h is provided. Control is carried out by a convenient steering column. Elements that control movement are located at the top of the structure.
There are three modifications of the cutter measuring 42, 60 and 70 centimeters . The walk-behind tractors are equipped with four-stroke carburetor engines with a three-liter fuel tank.
Power ranges from 5 to 8 horsepower depending on the model. By adjusting the power, you can use not only attachments, but also mills and circular grinders.
Mechanical gear and closed-type multi-disc friction gearbox ensure high-quality transmission.
Efficient operation is maintained by the constant presence of oil in the clutch. The equipment can be supplemented with quick-change additional parts.
The machine easily copes with plowing the land, processing potatoes, mowing grass and other tasks . Locking wheel blocks and an internal power take-off shaft ensure comfortable operation.
When developing the machine, engineers took into account the specifics of the Russian terrain, as well as different types of soil. Thanks to this, the device is equipped with a gearbox that allows it to work on heavy soils.
A durable multi-tooth differential increases the reliability of the cultivator, and a comfortable steering column and wide wheels improve cross-country ability and controllability..
Controls
The machine is controlled through a column with two handles rigidly connected to the common body of the gearbox and drive axle. The handles are equipped with a manual clutch control lever and a cable-operated fuel supply adjustment handle. For convenient control in reverse mode, the column with handles can be rotated in the opposite direction, for example, to work with a rotary mower or auger snow blower.

At the top edge of the column there are two gear shift levers and a differential lock handle. One lever is used to select speed, the other to switch the direction of movement “forward and backward”. The latest versions of the car are equipped with a sensor that blocks the ignition electrical network when the gear is engaged.
The power take-off shaft is engaged by a lever placed directly on the transmission housing when the gear block connecting the drive is mechanically engaged.
The engine is started by a manual cable device that transmits a rotational impulse directly to the engine crankshaft.

Modification of the Belarus MTZ-09N model engine
There are the following engine modifications that equip the Belarus MTZ-09N - these are the Honda GX270 and Chinese alternatives. The most common is the model with a four-stroke Honda engine, which has a power of 9 hp, one cylinder and a maximum number of revolutions of 3600 per minute.
Engine Kipor KG280
Engine Honda GX270
Engine Lifan LF177
In order to reduce the cost, the models are equipped with Chinese Kipor KG280 and Lifan LF177 engines, which are similar in their characteristics. However, reviews of such motors are mostly negative, since their service life is significantly reduced. Domestic engines UD-15 and UD-25 are characterized by economical fuel consumption, but the complexity of their design and, accordingly, difficult repairs.
Another alternative are models with the Czech Motor Jikov GH1509 engine, but they are not as popular as the above units.
Brands are analogues of the Belarus MTZ-09N model
It is difficult to find an analogue to such a familiar and reliable unit as the Belarus MTZ-09N, but, nevertheless, machines from the ZUBR, Neva, Centaur or Chinese Grasshopper brands can compete in their performance.
Advantages and disadvantages
The main advantage of the motor cultivator is the presence of a gasoline engine that can operate with fuel of any quality.
Other advantages of the technology include the following::
- Versatility . They can be supplemented with various elements of Russian and foreign production. This allows you to significantly increase versatility.
- Simple design . Thanks to this, you can repair the unit yourself.
- Operation in different conditions . The machines do their job perfectly regardless of environmental conditions. They are designed for use in central Russia, since the post office and topography of this area are most suitable for equipment units.
- Economical . This is due to the use of fuels and lubricants. Moreover, their quality does not affect the performance of the motor.
- Modernity . The manufacturer's assortment includes several modifications of the model. Each of them has an attractive appearance. Despite the long production of machines, modern units are made taking into account the latest trends.
Among the shortcomings, consumers highlight the following:
- difficult switching of operating modes due to non-synchronous transmission;
- difficult turning when transporting cargo due to imperfect differential locking;
- Difficult access to fasteners complicates the connection of factory attachments;
- high cost of units compared to similar equipment from other manufacturers;
- the large mass of the device, due to which the operator has to perform significant physical exertion, especially when carrying out work in an unprepared area.
Equipment and design of the model
The Belarus 09n walk-behind tractor has a powerful 9 hp gasoline engine. volume 270 cm3. Depending on the specific modification, the machine can be supplied with engines from various domestic, Chinese, Japanese and other manufacturers.
The unit is equipped with two wheels with pneumatic tires. The diameter of the wheels depends on the installed engine.
The gearbox is mechanical, stepped with gears that are in constant mesh. Has 4 forward gears and 2 reverse.
Levers that switch operating modes, controls (gas and clutch) are located on the steering rod along with the differential lock control lever.
MTZ 09 also has a power take-off shaft, used as a drive for attachments such as a feed chopper, pump or circular saw.
The mount for coupling equipment is universal and makes it possible to attach awnings even from previous models of walk-behind tractor.
Engine
On the Internet you can find many reviews from MTZ 09N owners about the old UD-15 or UD-25 engines, which are currently not relevant and can be replaced. Nowadays, Honda or Lifan engines are most often installed instead.
The Honda GX270 engine is installed on the MTZ 09N walk-behind tractor at the factory and is considered the standard for such equipment, recommended for installation as a replacement for the old one.
- power - 9 hp;
- volume - 270 cm3;
- shaft rotation speed - 3600 rpm.
Lifan LF177 is produced in China and acts as a cheaper alternative to Honda, and according to the stated characteristics they are identical. You can find a large number of positive reviews.
Valves
Installing a good engine is not enough. Its condition must be monitored and the valves adjusted due to the changing clearance in them in order to avoid costly engine repairs.
If the gap is large, the engine does not receive the required amount of gasoline and it begins to make noise.
If in doubt, check and set the correct gap using a razor blade, the width of which should be from 0.1 to 0.15 mm - these are the numbers for the valves in normal condition.
Adjustment of valves
- Unscrew the nut a little and place the blade under the valve.
- Turn the flywheel a couple of times - the blade should not interfere with its movement, but there should be no gap either.
Carburetor
If the engine malfunctions and does not produce the required power, adjust the carburetor. It is also recommended to do this after the winter break to avoid breakdowns during the work.
The bolted connections could become loose when the walk-behind tractor is left unused for a long period of time.
Carburetor adjustment
Tighten the bolts that regulate the maximum and minimum throttle until they stop, then unscrew them half a turn.
Turn on the maximum speed using the control lever. THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT STOP OPERATING AT THIS TIME.
Using the screw responsible for the throttle position, adjust the idle speed - there should be no noise.
Adjust the fuel supply to the carburetor using the fuel screws. If you tighten them, the fuel supply will decrease, if you unscrew them, it will increase.
Correct carburetor setting
The easiest way to ensure the correct operation of a walk-behind tractor is to check the condition of the spark plugs, which are the “litmus test” of the engine. If they are clean, everything is fine; if not, look for failures and carry out repairs.
Clutch
The clutch of the MTZ Belarus 09N walk-behind tractor is responsible for transferring the shift from the lever to the gearbox, so the performance of the machine depends on its serviceability. The owner must be able to adjust the clutch for proper operation.
How to identify clutch problems
- If the walk-behind tractor drives and tries to move off when the lever is fully depressed, this means that the adjusting screw is loose and should be tightened.
- If everything is the other way around (the clutch is released, but the required number of revolutions is not achieved or the walk-behind tractor is standing still), the screw must be loosened.
Owners often believe that adjusting the clutch on their own is a complicated process, but in the video you can see that it is quite simple.

Run-in
All new owners of Belarus 09 should first break it in. Many people view this procedure with surprise and misunderstanding: why does such a powerful walk-behind tractor need a break-in? But after reading the instructions and reviews, it becomes clear that this is a must.
Running in is the key to long, trouble-free operation of the walk-behind tractor. During this procedure, its parts fall into place, rub against each other and are lubricated.
Let's take a look at the important rules:
- During the first run-in, the walk-behind tractor should under no circumstances be used at full power or with attachments.
- Then a run-in with attachments is carried out, but not to perform work, but to increase the weight of the walk-behind tractor.
- Then you can use the machine in the field, but to begin with, perform the work half-heartedly: for example, the maximum immersion of the plow is 20 cm, and during break-in - 10 cm.
Video of running in MTZ 09N
Each owner must understand the principle of turning the PTO on and off and figure it out at the break-in stage, because The speed of operation of the attachment depends on the number of transmitted revolutions.
checkpoint
The walk-behind tractor is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox:
- 4 forward gears;
- 2 rear.
The driving speed ranges from 2.6 km/h in 1st gear to 11.4 km/h in fourth. Thus, each owner can choose the optimal speed for each type of work.
When driving backwards, Belarus-09N can reach speeds of up to 5.35 km/h.
How the gearbox works
Box repair
If you hear noise in the gearbox during operation, the first thing to do is check the amount of oil. If it is not enough, you should add more.
The oil level should be checked before each trip. If used without it, the gearbox may be seriously damaged. The choice of oil should be made in accordance with the operating instructions.
If everything is in order with the lubricating elements, but the noise does not go away, then most likely the transmission gears have failed. They must be replaced immediately. Do not work with faulty gears, as they may fall apart and damage the entire transmission.
It often happens that the gear does not engage, namely 4. The reason is trivial. It turns on infrequently and only during the most difficult work. Therefore, there may be a lack of lubrication in the lever itself. To solve this problem, oil it overnight. There are no seals and the oil must flow and lubricate freely. If the problem persists, you will need to completely disassemble and lubricate all parts of the test point.
Electricity
Belarus 09N is equipped with a conventional starter as standard. This is not very convenient, since it is difficult to start in winter. And when you consider our cold winters, this becomes a completely challenging task.
This is why electric starters have become more common. If desired, the walk-behind tractor can be converted to it.
Conversion to electric starter
- This requires a generator that provides electrical current for electrical starting. A car generator is well suited for these purposes.
- Then the old starter is removed and an electric one is installed in its place and connected to the generator.
Generator installation video
Many owners are interested in the topic of light. By default there are no headlights. And they can only be placed when installing a generator. The generator voltage is enough for both the starter and the light.

Attachments
The MTZ Belarus 09N walk-behind tractor can be supplemented with the following devices:
- Frez . Allows you to prepare the soil for planting crops by mixing layers of soil and fertilizers. Suitable for processing light and medium soil, but not effective on virgin soil. Grinds plants with soil, making them homogeneous.
- Plow . Designed for use on dense soil where a tiller cannot cope. It cultivates the ground and creates a furrow, and is also used to cover raised soil. Penetrates deep into the soil, mixing all layers.
- Harrow . It crushes the soil after plowing the area with a plow, providing more comfortable conditions for further work.
- Okuchnik . The device is designed to facilitate the care of seedlings and minimize manual labor. Increases the quality and speed of processing the area with a walk-behind tractor. The soil is thrown onto the plants as the rows pass, thereby eliminating weeds.
- Snow blower . Looks like a curved shovel tilted to the side. When moving, it shovels snow to the side. The snow throw distance ranges from 3 to 6 meters depending on engine power.
- Potato planter . An excellent solution for those who grow crops in large quantities. In a short time, he collects a large amount of potatoes, excluding manual labor. The vibration model deserves special attention; it lifts root crops from a depth of up to 20 cm and separates lumps of earth from them due to vibration.
- Mower . The equipment makes it easier to mow grass and harvest grain. There are rotary and segment devices. The former provide rotation of the knives, and the latter – movement in the horizontal direction. Rotary ones are most effective at cutting grass.
- Adapter . A standard walk-behind tractor is a structure on one axle, equipped with two wheels. In this case, control occurs with the help of the hands of a person walking behind. An adapter can be used to treat larger areas. It attaches to the unit, simplifying its placement and making work more comfortable.
- Trailer . The power of the motorized cultivator allows you to transport loads up to 650 kg. In this regard, it is advisable to purchase a trailer.
- Weighting agent and lug . They provide effective grip on the ground, making it easier to cover a large area. The lugs are made in the form of a rim, which is attached instead of wheels. Along the perimeter of the rim there are plates that provide effective grip. Weights are hung on a walk-behind tractor or attachments to prevent uneven tillage.
Purpose of the walk-behind tractor
The production of walk-behind tractors at the Smorgon Aggregate Plant was mastered in 1992. The first model was called Belarus 05.
The agricultural aids produced by the company immediately won over customers for their functionality, reliability and cost.
Further development of this direction was the development and production of the next generation walk-behind tractor, which received the designation Belarus MTZ 09N.
MTZ Belarus 09N is a universal technical tool for agricultural work, which is extremely necessary for small farms or private owners cultivating small plots of land (2-5 hectares).
In such areas it is impossible or expensive to use tractors, including their small versions.
The design of the walk-behind tractor, including the modification Belarus 09N 02, is characterized by one wheel axle on which the engine is mounted, providing the unit with the necessary energy.
It is equipped with replaceable attachments that allow you to perform a variety of jobs. The produced modification under the designation MTZ 09N with a Honda engine is capable of performing the following agricultural work:
- tillage;
- plowing using a specially produced plow;
- cultivation,
- harrowing,
- hilling,
- planting crops (planting potatoes using a special potato planter is especially effective);
- harvesting agricultural crops, including potatoes, using a potato digger.
Using a variety of trailed and mounted equipment, they perform:
- mow the grass;
- digging ditches;
- mow lawns;
- sweep the area;
- remove snow;
- transport goods;
- pumping water.
User manual
The walk-behind tractor is easy to use, but to extend its service life you should carefully monitor its condition:
- Inspect for problems before each use, including checking the security of bolted connections;
- After work, remove particles of earth or snow to prevent rust;
- take fuel at a height of 2 centimeters to prevent dust from entering the fuel system from the bottom of the tank;
- control the presence of oil to avoid premature wear of equipment;
- use 10W-30 oil, which ensures efficient operation of the walk-behind tractor in any season;
- before changing the oil, drain the remaining fuel from the previous one, fill in the flush and let the car idle;
- use M-10V2 or M-10G2 fuel in the summer, M-8G2 - in the winter;
- fill in the full amount of oil.
New and used prices
Motoblocks 09-N cannot be purchased directly from the factory; they are sold from official dealers and retail stores. The price for @Belarus [email protected] greatly depends on the region of the supplier, the average cost of a new unit is:
- 09N-01 (Honda) – 80,400 rub.,
- 09H-02 (Veima) – 73,150 rub.,
- 09H-02 (Veima 13 hp) – 82,000 rub.,
- 09R-02 – 67200 rub.
Buying a used MTZ 09N is quite difficult, because there are very few offers that can talk about the reliability and durability of the walk-behind tractor - they still don’t want to sell it. There is still the opportunity to find heavy units; their cost will be on average 39 thousand rubles. Most often they sell old MTZ-05.
A few words about the manufacturer
Many people know the MTZ company and buy its products. After all, it has been producing and selling agricultural equipment for many decades. Products from the Minsk Tractor Plant can compete in quality with imported analogues. And their price is low, which pleases consumers. This also applies to the Veima walk-behind tractor. And the products last a long time, reliably performing all the necessary work. The company also produces parts for equipment so that in the event of a breakdown, outdated elements can be replaced.
