Lecture 2 “Altai Tractor Plant”

OJSC "Altai Tractor"

(1942–2010)

The Altai Tractor Plant was born in the harsh war year of 1942 on the basis of evacuated equipment from the Kharkov and Stalingrad tractor plants. Pre-war Rubtsovsk was a small steppe town. The war unexpectedly made its own adjustments to the life of the regional center of Altai. In February 1942, trains with equipment and evacuated workers began to arrive in Rubtsovsk. At an accelerated pace, grain warehouses were transformed into workshops: mechanical repair, iron foundry, pressing, motor, mechanical assembly, tool and others. At the same time, steel foundry and forging shops, a combined heat and power plant with a complex system of water intake structures on the Alei River were built. Before the launch of the thermal power plant, the workshops were supplied with electricity by an energy train. Intra-factory transportation of parts was carried out on horses.

August 24, 1942 is the date of birth of the plant, when the first Altai kerosene tractor of the ASKHTZ-NATI brand was assembled. So, in a short time, under the most difficult wartime conditions, the Altai Tractor Plant was built. It was the only plant in the country that produced tractors for the needs of the front and rear.

The Motherland highly appreciated the hard work of the factory workers during the war. For the successful completion of government tasks for the construction of the plant and the organization of tractor production, the Red Banner of the State Defense Committee was handed over to the ATZ team for eternal storage, a group of workers was awarded orders and medals. On the eve of 1945, the first sample of the DT-54 tractor was assembled, for the development of which the group of designers was awarded the State Prize.

By resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on July 1, 1946, the Altai Tractor Plant was named after M.I. Kalinina.

The demands of peacetime put forward with great urgency the questions of further improvement of machines and increasing their reliability before tractor manufacturers. In 1952, without stopping production, the plant switched to producing DT-54 tractors. It was at that time that a powerful stream of diesel tractors came from the factory to the fields, and it was at that time that a large team of designers began to take shape. During the years of development of virgin and fallow lands, factory workers manufactured and supplied 9,630 DT-54 tractors to the workers of Siberia and Kazakhstan, which were the main arable machine for raising virgin soil. Along with agricultural machines, the plant produced the DT-55 swamp tractor.

In 1956, a decision was made to organize the production of skidders for the forestry industry at the Altai Tractor Plant. In September 1957, the first TDT-60 tractor was assembled for logging work without stopping the production of an agricultural tractor. At the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, the car was awarded the highest award - a 1st degree diploma and a gold Grand Prix prize.

The plant's specialists continued to work on a more powerful skidding tractor TDT-75. In May 1962, the plant staff switched to producing a new modification of the skidder - TDT-75. With the establishment of the production of skidding machines, the Altai Tractor Plant turned into one of the largest enterprises in the east of the country

In January 1965, production of the T-4 tractor with a 110 hp engine began. With. “The T-4 tractor is the brainchild of ATZ. If we mastered STZ-NATI, DT-54, TDT-60 and TDT-75 with the help of other enterprises and research institutions, the T-4 tractor was completely designed and manufactured at ATZ. “One of the modifications of the T-4 is the T tractor -4M - awarded a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Moscow in 1966.

On July 25, 1966, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the plant was awarded the Order of Lenin for the successful implementation of the 7-year plan, the creation and development of production of new high-performance machines. More than eleven thousand tractor builders were awarded orders and medals, three were awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor.

In subsequent years, the plant team constantly improves the designs of manufactured machines. Since 1970, tractor manufacturers switched to producing a more powerful T-4A agricultural tractor. On the basis of this tractor, the industrial model T-4AP2, intended for construction and road work, was developed and produced.

Since November 1971, the plant has been producing the TT-4 skidding tractor for the forestry industry. The widespread introduction of new logging technology in logging operations, based on their complete mechanization, necessitates the creation of a TT-4M skidding tractor with a single-seat cabin.

ATZ specialists constantly improved their products. In 1989, not only in the region, but also in the country, they started talking about a new generation tractor - the T-250, which was created at ATZ, passed successful tests with the American Challenger-65 tractor and was recommended for production.

In the early 90s, due to objective economic reasons, the demand for manufactured equipment fell sharply. At this time, a lot of work was done to expand the scope of applicability of tractors and create mini-tractors. The production of previously purchased components and parts has begun on its own premises.

A program of gradual transition from the T-4A tractor to the T-250 tractor is being implemented. In 1997, the T-402 tractor was put on the conveyor. In 1999, production of the T-404 tractor began in small series. The skidding tractor is the basis for 12 modifications of forestry machines produced at 8 forestry engineering plants in Siberia. Currently, Alttrak OJSC produces serially the T-4A and T-402. In small batches it produces T-404, T-250 tractors, mini-tractors upon customer request, as well as TT-4M skidders.

OKB specialists are constantly searching for technical solutions to improve existing tractors and create new models; a family of universal crawler tractors is being tested. The first samples of the new skidding machine MT-5 have been manufactured and tested, as well as on its basis a skidding machine with an MTM manipulator, a chokerless skidding machine LT-187A, and a timber loader LT-188A.

In 2006–2009, the plant went through bankruptcy proceedings. The owner of the Altai tractor plant, Novosibirsk RATM-Holding, has undertaken to fully repay the wage arrears to the company’s employees.

From 2009 to the present, tractor production at the Altai plant has not been restored.

Alttrak is the city-forming enterprise of Rubtsovsk. The plant still employs several thousand city residents; the former Alttraka thermal power plant provides heat and hot water to two-thirds of the city residents.

There is information that the owner decided to resume production by repurposing the tractor plant to produce welding machines and new models of agricultural equipment.

Tractors Altai

Russian is known for its high-quality self-propelled vehicles. Ever since the Great Patriotic War, he began producing agricultural machinery, but even today it remains popular.

Each Altai tractor is a reliable, highly cross-country and durable vehicle. It can be used in any conditions, has good performance characteristics and can withstand any load.

Agricultural utopia

In 1971, the ninth five-year plan began. In the wake of the national economic boom of previous years, the authorities sought to further increase the rate of economic growth. Collective and state farms were tasked with significantly increasing the production of grain, potatoes, vegetables and other crops. Agricultural labor productivity was supposed to increase almost 1.5 times, while production costs would decrease.

Such large-scale tasks required better technical equipment. Mechanical engineering has become an important area of industrial development. It was planned to significantly increase the volume of production and supply of agricultural machinery. Over the five-year period, collective and state farms were to receive about 1.7 million tractors (including 705 thousand arable) and 1.5 million trailers for them, 1.1 million trucks, 87 thousand excavators, 82 thousand bulldozers, 42 ,5 thousand scrapers, as well as 541 thousand grain, 230 thousand silage harvesters and 60 thousand beet harvesters.

However, the problems with agricultural machinery were not limited to their small numbers. Old tractor models no longer met the requirements of the new five-year plan. The developers were faced with the task of creating machines of greater power and productivity that could process fields at high speeds. With new tractors, combined units were used that were capable of performing several operations in one pass. One of these new models was the T-4A.

Features of Altai tractors

  • Robust and reliable design
  • Versatility - units can be used in any area
  • Possibility of using attachments
  • High cross-country ability, full adaptation to domestic working conditions
  • Affordable price.

The Altai tractor range is a productive piece of equipment that can be used in different areas of life. The company produces crawler tractors, models with a fixed shaft, as well as universal units. All such tractors can be used for working in the field, moving goods, clearing roads or construction, filling holes and trenches. The equipment is additionally equipped with a ripper, loader and other attachments.

Practical disadvantages

Despite the original engineering solutions, awarded with many awards, and widespread use in the virgin regions of Siberia and Kazakhstan, the T-4 family of tractors was not particularly loved by collective farmers. Although their powerful traction made it possible to use them for plowing heavy irrigated soils, the design of the tractor had significant drawbacks.

The main one was the semi-rigid suspension. Firstly, contrary to the intentions of the developers, it did not allow the tractor to develop high speed. This made it, in fact, suitable only for arable work; in the summer-autumn period, the T-4A was idle. Competitive models T-74 and T-150, produced by the Kharkov Tractor Plant, developed much greater speed and were widely used for harvesting and other summer work.

Secondly, in winter, when plowing frozen soil, the suspension caused severe shaking. Combined with the loud noise from the engine, this caused significant inconvenience to the driver and even posed a health hazard. Another major drawback was the difficulty of the tractor to repair and maintain. For example, to replace the friction belts of the rotary mechanism, which wore out quite quickly, it was necessary to remove the fuel tank. The tractor tracks were also not reliable.

Tractor T4 Altai

The tracked unit belongs to models whose traction class is 4. It is equipped with mounted, trailed, and semi-mounted equipment. It can also perform the functions of a bulldozer.

The peculiarity of the model is its powerful 6-cylinder engine, which received an enlarged fuel combustion tank and a sophisticated liquid cooling system. An electric starter is provided, which makes starting the engine much easier.

Tracked vehicles

The production of agricultural machinery in Russia is gaining momentum. Proof of this is the powerful tracked units released on them. The enterprise was created on the basis of the Soviet tractor production, which has been producing agricultural machinery and skidding tractors since the war.

Today, the range of Altai tractors is replenished not only with new agricultural machines, but also with productive quarry equipment. The enterprise produces several models of crawler bulldozers of traction class 3-4. Altai machines with a fixed blade can be used both in agriculture and in construction. For moving building materials, clearing roads, for leveling terrain, for filling trenches and holes. In addition to the bulldozer hitch, some models of crawler tractors are equipped with a mounted loader, a ripper and can work with a timber semi-trailer.

Capabilities of the Altai-130 universal tractor

Among the latest successes of the tractor plant is the universal model Altai-130 of 4 traction class, released in 2015. Altai tracked tractor with 140 hp power. equipped with a bulldozer hitch and a powerful traction 6-cylinder DEUTZ engine.

The main advantages of this technique include:

  • identical tractor efficiency on the farm, in the field, in construction, regardless of the time of year and weather conditions;
  • economical but very reliable German-made engine;
  • the shortest possible maintenance time for Altai-130;
  • sophisticated hydraulic rotating system;
  • specific fuel consumption is less than 245 g/kWh;
  • self-cooling brake system;
  • stability of the equipment and the ability to work on different soils (due to the significant width of the tracks 390 mm);
  • ergonomic cabin and comfortable workplace for the operator.

T-4

The basic chassis of the T-4 Altaets was used for the manufacture of 4 modifications.

Their distinctive features:

  • version C1, equipped with a full set of hydraulic linkage and 2 additional remote cylinders;
  • modification C2, which differed from C1 in the absence of attachments, main and remote cylinders;
  • option C3, which did not have hydraulics and a linkage mechanism;
  • model C4, identical in hydraulics to C1, but without 2 remote cylinders.

The weight of the tractor depends on the configuration and ranges from 7150 to 7600 kg. The ground pressure for all modifications is assumed to be the same and amounts to 0.35 kg/cm². By separate order, a single-speed rear drive shaft of additional units (PTO) of an independent circuit was installed, an autonomous engine warm-up system and a heating device for the operator's cabin were installed.

The vehicle was equipped with a 4-stroke diesel engine model AM-01.

The engine has an in-line arrangement of 6 cylinders and a forced liquid cooling system. The engine is equipped with an atmospheric pressure air supply system and develops a power of 110 hp. With. with a cylinder volume of 11150 cm³. A special feature of the engine is its low shaft speed. Maximum power develops at 1600 rpm, and peak torque occurs at 1100-1300 rpm.

To start a diesel engine, a separate gasoline unit of the PD-10U type, equipped with liquid cooling, is used. The cylinder jacket of the starting motor is connected to a common cooling system. The gasoline engine is started using an electric starter. In practice, starting is done manually by turning the shaft using a starting cord. The use of a gasoline starter eliminated the need for bulky batteries and ensured diesel starting in low temperatures.

The technical characteristics of the engine required the use of a reinforced clutch equipped with 2 discs. The clutch is connected by a driveshaft to the reverse guitar. The gearbox is 4-speed, equipped with cylindrical gears with straight teeth. The use of a reverse guitar made it possible to increase the number of forward gears by 2 times and obtain 4 reverse speeds. The gearbox and guitar crankcases have a common lubrication system.

The rear axle includes a main pair equipped with bevel gears, a planetary gear for turning, 2 sun gear brake bands and 2 brakes for stopping the machine. The drive of the rotation band brakes is equipped with a hydraulic booster. The drive wheels are mounted on final drives equipped with spur gears.

The tractor is based on a frame riveted from 2 box-section spars. There are brackets on the side members that are connected to the rear axle housing. The front part of the side members is connected by a cast steel beam. The car's suspension is semi-rigid, equipped with a transverse spring mounted on a balancer. The spring is made up of 4 sheets of different lengths. The ends of the springs are freely laid on the shock absorbers of the side crawler bogies.

The trolley consists of a frame, on the lower surface of which 6 support rollers are installed. A shock absorber is installed in the front part of the frame. To support the upper branch of the caterpillar, 2 support rollers are used. The front wheel is used to guide and tension the track. The rear part of the frame is mounted on the drive axle shaft through bearing supports. The track consists of 43 steel links connected by pins that are pressed into the outer parts of the links. Only 1 finger is not pressed in, which is used to disconnect the caterpillar.
