A passing legend

I learned that one of the Renault Trucks dealers near Moscow received a 2012 Renault Magnum. The new owners of this French brand (Volvo) are keeping their marketing moves secret for now, and the fate of this, without exaggeration, legendary flagship of the French brand is not determined. So I decided to take a closer look at Magnum, which, who knows, maybe the last one in history...
The appearance of the AE series tractors in the early nineties did not leave indifferent not only seasoned international long-distance truck drivers, but also the rare person who was even the slightest bit interested in cars in general did not stop their gaze on it. The cabin, completely independent from the chassis, majestically towering above the road, creates an incomparable image for the car. Technologically, this scheme made it possible, in addition to a significant improvement in comfort, to create an absolutely flat floor without a motor tunnel and a high ceiling - important components of the difficult life of a truck driver, especially if the crew consists of two people.
Convenience is convenient, but climbing up the narrow steps and then taking a step along the “cornice” to get into the cabin is a dubious pleasure. No, there is no need to make excessive physical efforts, and the door handle is carefully located at the bottom, and on the back side, so as not to get your hands dirty, but the boarding process evokes the romantic times of construction brigades, an indispensable attribute of which is an old-style railway carriage stopped at a distant stop with low landing platform.
In plain sight
It’s really a shame to complain about getting into the cabin. What then do you order to do if the wheel has to be changed on the road? But I still want to grumble: it’s winter outside, my jacket is insulated and quite thick - I move the driver’s seat as far back as possible, and it’s still unapologetically cramped! And my height is less than one meter eighty. When the cabin has warmed up, I take off my jacket and again try to find a comfortable position. I remembered the lower “sleepers” of some European long-haul vehicles, which narrow somewhat in the seat area, providing the necessary fit for long-term work. I still managed to get comfortable, but I didn’t like the angle of the shin and the “captive trap” for the leg in the area of the pedals. To be fair, it should be noted that the gearbox on the test car is automated, so only the right leg was uncomfortable, and cruise control will certainly help smooth out the discomfort. But I really liked the review and the mirrors. You can see everything at once, and what’s nice is that the cabin is comfortable, despite the huge glass area.
Disadvantages of Renault Magnum.
Many Renault Magnum owners complain about “swimming” and “rocking” of the cabin. All generations of the truck have this problem.
Some drivers also note, among other things, the poor aerodynamics of the cabin, as a result of which a large amount of dirt accumulates on the handrails in any weather conditions. In addition, some models lack deflectors.
Getting into the cab itself is very inconvenient for many truckers.
Some people are also unhappy with the stoves.
Due to the low quality of Russian-made fuel, the fuel filter must be replaced frequently. It has to be changed every 20,000 km. For the same reason, individual pumps often fail.
The Magnum suspension also has its drawbacks. In particular, truck drivers talk about weak brake pad springs, which can only be purchased complete with the pads themselves, and problems with the rear stabilizer.
Brake pads, although they can last more than 200,000 km, wear out unevenly. This is due to a caliper defect.
The generator lasts as long as the engine, but the brushes need to be changed every 250,000 km.
The service life of the air compressor is 500,000 km. The dryer filter must be replaced every 60,000 km.
From dawn to dusk
Due to the large glass area of the cabin, when driving on the highway, the oncoming or side sun may interfere, especially at dawn or sunset. And if thick curtains carefully sewn by your wife help in the parking lot, then when driving all your hope lies in well-designed and comfortable sun visors. In this situation, the Renault Magnum driver can remain a bachelor - the curtains have already been “sewn” for him at the factory. And what kind! Electrically driven, stopping in any intermediate position and on each window. And to prevent the front curtain from accidentally sliding down completely while driving, protective stops are provided. You can turn your cabin into a cozy, completely dark bedroom in a few seconds. By the way, anti-fatigue lighting is just red - in the basic configuration.
Exterior and interior
The design of the French Renault Magnum truck initially shocked many motorists. No automobile plant has ever produced something like this before. The appearance of the car is masculine. The square two-module layout of the cabin, the absence of a hood - all this is unusual for truckers who are accustomed to driving tractors, the design of which is practically the same from each other. A non-slip step makes it easy to reach the windshield. The modern look of the truck is given by chrome inserts along the cab visor, a radiator grille, which the designers painted in two tones, and size indicators. Renault Magnum was able to outperform tractors from Mercedes and Volvo, and it has already been recognized as the most beautiful truck in the world.
Renault Magnum interior
The interior of the truck is also original. The first thing that distinguishes the truck’s interior design is the flat floor throughout the driver’s cabin, without bulges or rises. The useful space of the cabin reaches 8 cubic meters. The compartment for storing personal belongings measures more than 1000 cubic meters. The passenger seat rotates 90 and 180 degrees. Cabin dimensions: width – 207 cm, height – 207 cm, depth – 201 cm. The Multi Space concept makes the cabin completely transformable.
Let's sit on the path
The previous third generation of Magnums, which hit the roads in the mid-2000s, was often criticized for the lack of niches for things, shelves, pockets, and drawers. Truly, everything is known by comparison. It’s just that now all competitors have tightened up the organization of the cabin space so much that the undisputed former leader in this discipline from the nineties, the “French” Magnum, quietly resting on its laurels, immediately became an outsider against the background of the “Germans” and “Swedes”. Now justice has been restored: there is an abundance of all kinds of niches, containers, “glove compartments”, with lids, blinds and without, and all this is “seasoned” with 24 and 12 V power sockets scattered throughout the cabin, a refrigerator and a separate refrigerated box specifically for the bottle. And for pleasant gatherings or business negotiations, you can transform the interior space.
There is a convenient trunk above the upper berth, and now there is no need to put travel bags and other luggage on the upper bed in order for the second driver to move them to the floor or front panel before spending the night. The lower “sleeper” can easily be converted into a table with two chairs, and the “navigator’s” seat can rotate around its axis. However, be careful when leaving the cabin! The staircase, the one with handrails, is on the side, half a meter from the door. There's nothing you can do; you have to pay for a large internal volume with external dimensions limited by strict standards.
The disadvantages of the previous generation Magnum have been eliminated: the niches and drawers inside the cabin are comfortable and roomy, the materials are quite decent - nothing creaks or dangles
Sun visors and curtains are combined into a common design and equipped with an electric drive; their efficiency deserves the highest rating. By the way, when the front curtain is completely lowered, a “secret” is revealed, why a slot is needed on the front panel
Exterior of Renault Magnum.
When the first generation Renault Magnum saw the light, truckers were simply shocked by its appearance. French designers created an image of a truck that was radically different from its contemporaries. Masculinity and dynamism were read in every detail of Magnum’s appearance.
The hood was missing, and its cabin became completely square with a two-module layout with a huge windshield, which truckers nicknamed “the TV.”
It was also unusual that the driver had to climb a ladder into the cab. The designers were never able to solve this shortcoming.
In order to reach the windshield, there is a step with an anti-slip coating.
Compared to other trucks, Renault Magnum looks more solid and impressive. Thanks to the chrome tabs on the visor, its style is modern and unrivaled. Position indicators, LEDs, a radiator grille painted in two tones - all this creates an individual image of the Magnum.
Designers in Milan recognized the Renault Magnum as the most beautiful truck in the world. At the competition, he managed to beat such competitors as the Mercedes Actros and Volvo FH16.
Before the flight
Unfortunately, this station does not specialize in the sale of semi-trailers, so, unfortunately, I was not able to ride on the train. Therefore, skon.
Out of habit, before leaving, I do an inspection and, of course, check all the technical fluids. Having folded back the plastic casing behind the cab on the left side, we will check the oil level in the engine using a dipstick. I would like to draw a little attention to this point. In most modern trucks, this simple device has been eliminated and retired, instead the oil level is controlled by on-board electronics. However, any machine can get old, and sometimes wear out prematurely due to harsh operating conditions. But you still have to go and work. Even if on a frosty morning the batteries suddenly die out, this can happen to any new or old car. In such difficult moments of an already difficult life as a driver, a simple tube with a piece of metal cable sealed at the edges with plastic tips will not allow the “donor” to start an oil-starved engine. However, this is a lyrical digression...
External niches for luggage, spare parts and tools
Next to the oil dipstick there is a windshield washer reservoir, and under the symmetrical casing on the right side there is a hydraulic jack for lifting the cab. Now all these devices will be clean in any weather, however, on the old Magnum the cabin was raised by electric drive. The expansion tank of the cooling system is hidden under the aerodynamic casing on the left corner of the cabin, only the thumb that opens this “casket” is completely frozen. Nothing, a little finger training... and he gives in so that I can make sure that everything is in order with the antifreeze.
The layout of components and assemblies on a frame that is slightly longer than that of most competitors, however, does not provide a place for mounting a spare wheel, but two huge fuel tanks will allow you to take on board a supply of more than a ton, which will eliminate the possibility of visiting dubious gas stations on the road.
Renault Magnum (Renault Magnum) – Fuel Expert
And the interior has become much more comfortable. Plus, it is equipped with 6-cylinder engines, which are very economical and even environmentally friendly. The Magnum's interior has a surprisingly perfectly flat floor and the driver can feel at home in it.
When I bought a car and drove it from abroad, fuel consumption was within 30 liters, but then it increased to 35, despite the fact that I constantly monitored the condition of the oil. I didn’t take the load, while I was checking fuel consumption and Renault Magnum 440 fuel consumption had a significant increase in consumption.
Maybe I still have technical problems with Renault Magnum 440 fuel consumption, but, based on reviews, I understand that I’m not the only one and many people face a problem when, after some time, the car’s appetites simply begin to grow.
In all other aspects, it is simply impossible to find fault with the Renault Magnum, since all indicators are above average.
When I worked at the quarry, during this time I probably changed a lot of vehicles, but the best thing, of course, was driving a Renault Magnum. This car holds the road amazingly, the engine is powerful, and the fuel consumption doesn't burn all the money out of your pocket. This is probably why I still recommend it to everyone who asks which car to choose of this particular type.
Renault Magnum 440 fuel consumption, in the city the car consumes 30 liters with an average load, and on the highway it turns out no more than 30 liters.
Engine braking system
The new "Optibrake+" engine braking system produces a braking power of 414 kW at an engine speed of 2300 rpm.
Equipped with engine braking, exhaust brake, retarders and service brakes, the Renault Magnum combines all this into a centralized braking system that provides a deceleration rate of 7 m/s2, exceeding the current standard of 5 m/s2.
High efficiency is achieved by the comprehensive use of retarders integrated with the braking system, with automatic shutdown during acceleration, shutdown of the ABS anti-lock braking system and automatic reactivation of the electronically controlled air braking system EBS, depending on the specific traction conditions.
Behind the folding protective and aerodynamic plastic panels, the oil dipstick and windshield washer reservoir are hidden on the left, and the cab lift mechanism is on the right. The cabin is raised using a hydraulic jack; earlier generations of Magnums had an electric drive.
"Magnum" Euro 4/5
The latest generation of Magnums was mass-produced from 2005 to 2014 (a photo of the Renault Magnum from this series can be seen below in the article).
The car has remained virtually unchanged in appearance. It still has a boxy cab and vertical headlights. Among the innovations are a chrome trim under the windshield and a modified radiator grille. The design of the glass, handles and position of the footrests remain the same. For a better overview, the French installed an additional mirror under the visor. The car was produced in this form for all 9 years. But even now the design cannot be called outdated. The truck looks quite fresh and has a monumental silhouette.
Let's go for a ride!
Inspecting the tractor, I was pleased to note the simply magnificent wheels of this not-so-massive vehicle! Luxurious tires measuring 385/55 R22.5 are mounted on shiny aluminum wheels with chrome-plated nuts on the front and “evil-toothed” tires with winter tread blocks measuring 315/70 R22.5 on the rear axle. With such “bast shoes” you can go to the ends of the earth!
The power output of the 13-liter Volvo DXi 13 engine produces 520 hp. there was no doubt, as well as the automated 12-speed gearbox Optidriver+ AT 2612D TD, also from Sweden, combined with it to perform a wide range of transport tasks. It couldn’t be any other way: this is a further development of well-proven units.
There comes a time when I describe the performance of various motor retarders and retarders, I tried it, everything seems to work in good faith, but due to the lack of coupling I will refuse to evaluate it.
Next, let me criticize the controversial instrument cluster and the dubious location of the parking brake system valve. Perhaps this is my personal preference. The instruments are readable well, but the handbrake behind the right elbow, and even diagonally... is not appropriate.
The main feature of the model is a special cabin suspension that provides the highest comfort.
The abundance of right-hand steering column switches will seem like an overload not only to me. But the standard audio system is equipped with a remote control, “aux” and “USB” inputs directly on the head panel - convenient and modern.
Smooth ride and driver comfort - the main concept of all generations of Renault Magnum is still at its best here. The air suspensions of the chassis, cabin, and seats do their job, partnered with excellent sound insulation. The cabin is always quiet and soft. Some complaints about the “jelly” reactions of previous generations of Magnums (according to reviews from European drivers) can be safely attributed to ergonomic flaws; today’s car deserves high praise from the driver’s point of view. And from the point of view of fleet management?

A little history.
Back in the late 1970s. French designers began developing a new flatbed truck with a trailer. And in 1990, the world saw the first generation of Renault Magnum - Renault AE. It was a completely new concept that literally revolutionized freight transportation. He impressed everyone without exception with his appearance. The cabin was now divided into two parts. The upper compartment contained the driver's seat and control levers, and the lower part contained the power unit and chassis.
The plant in Bourg-en-Brés, on the outskirts of Lyon, was the only one where the Magnum was produced. 1991 was a significant year in the history of the truck, it was awarded the title “Truck of the Year.” Renault AE was equipped with a V8 Mack turbocharged diesel engine with 500, 520 and 560 hp. It was a long-haul 15-ton flatbed truck with a trailer. They were produced until 1996.
In 1997, the second generation Renault Magnum was released. The designers have slightly updated the cabin and modified the dashboard. In addition, they changed the radiator grille. The truck was equipped with American advanced Mack engines. Their power was 390, 430 and 470 hp, and their volume was 12 liters.
In 1998, the Renault Magnum II came second in the European Truck of the Year competition.
In 2001, the French plant began production of the third generation Renault Magnum. Both the appearance and the range of engines were restyled. The designers changed the radiator grille and head optics of the truck. The cabin has become much more comfortable. Renault Magnum III was equipped with more economical and environmentally friendly 6-cylinder E-tech engines of Euro 3 standard with 400, 440 and 480 hp. The third generation Magnum was equipped with a 16-speed ZF AS-Tronic gearbox.
In 2002, the third generation Magnum took bronze at the prestigious Truck of the Year competition.
In 2005, the fourth generation of the Renault Magnum long-haul truck was released, which everyone was eagerly awaiting. The main changes this time affected mainly the engine line. American Mack engines were replaced with DXi12 (440-480 hp) and DXi13 turbodiesels of Euro-4/Euro-5 standard. The power of the 12.8-liter engine, which had second-generation pump injectors, was 460 and 500 hp. Injection pressure – 2000 bar. Particularly noteworthy is the Optibrake+ engine brake, which increases power from 332 to 381 kW.
Externally, the Magnum has not changed much, but its cabin has become more comfortable.
It should be noted that fuel consumption on all Magnum models ranges from 33 to 42 liters per 100 km. For such motors this is very good.
A sign of good taste
This model was initially conceived as far from being the most widespread, therefore it is not entirely correct to evaluate it as a park unit. This is a kind of cargo “exclusive”, an indicator of the level of a carrier capable of solving non-standard problems. The production volume of the Renault Magnum over the years confirms my understanding of the model (in total, according to various sources, only a little more than 100,000 copies were produced over 22 years). It is unusual and stands out in the crowd of peers and classmates; both the driver and the owner can show off it, because the tractor has already managed to take care of everyone. Here is another interesting example of this. When you press the button on the standard security system key fob again, the ground is turned off. Simply a great feature that any driver will appreciate. This is in addition to everything said above about convenience and options.
Undoubtedly, Renault Magnum is the face of the carrier. It is a sign of good taste, as well as a versatile and flexible approach to solving non-standard complex problems. So you can rely on him...

Renault Magnum owner reviews.
Review: Ivan, 2006 tractor.
I've been driving a Magnum for four years. As long as I drive, everything is fine, practically no problems at all. The only thing that’s not encouraging is that the truck doesn’t really like Russian fuel. And further. I would not recommend driving at -20, some problems may appear. My breather froze. The engine began to drive oil through the filler neck. And the car is a beast. The large, comfortable cabin is very pleasing. Can't compare with Scania - much better. “Mercedes” is also “resting” compared to Magnum.
Review: Victor, Magnum 2003.
At first I worked as a freight forwarder, going on trips with different drivers in different trucks. The weather conditions were very different. In the heat, the Magnum is pleased with the air conditioning. It’s not hot for either the passenger or the driver. And this, you see, is very important. After all, attention, reaction, and pressure depend on this. In winter, an autonomous stove is a pleasant surprise. Warm and good, and, moreover, low fuel consumption. Moreover, it works quietly, that is, it does not interfere with sleep. I myself once tried to steer a Magnum. The review is great! Soft, sensitive steering wheel. The dashboard is thought out to the smallest detail; everything here is very convenient and informative. And the fact that they say that the unit does not like Russian diesel fuel is nonsense. The main thing is to refuel at normal gas stations. Yes, and the technical inspection must be done on time, then there will be no problems. In general, I can say that the device is very, very worthy; of course, it cannot be compared with ours. And the price is not too high.
Review: Andrey, Renault Magnum 2005.
I spent a long time choosing which truck to buy. In the end I took the 2005 Magnum. Before that he worked for ours. I got into Renault and it was like I was in heaven! There is complete silence in the cabin, the engine is almost inaudible. On our roads, which are not in good condition, it performed just fine. The engine is powerful and, most importantly, economical. My consumption was 37-39 liters per hundred square meters. You can really live in the cabin - spacious, comfortable, chic! So if you are choosing which tractor to take, take the Magnum, you won’t go wrong and you won’t regret it.
Review: Nikolay, Magnum 2008.
Awesome truck! As a driver, I can’t say anything, because I only drove as a passenger. And from my point of view, I can’t help but mention safety. There are also pillows and belts. By the way, the seats are very comfortable, leather. And in your sleeping place you generally feel at home. Lobovukha is really like a TV, you ride like in a cinema. I was completely delighted with the ride in Magnum. I recommend it to everyone!
