A universal device capable of performing a large number of functions and notable for its low price is the Oka walk-behind tractor. Thanks to the possibility of using additional equipment, the equipment is used everywhere. Mechanized small equipment has increasingly begun to appear in the agricultural sector. This trend is associated with the desire to reduce manual labor and speed up the processes associated with cultivating the soil and making hay. One of these mechanized devices is the Oka walk-behind tractor, produced in Russia. This device has been used in agriculture for many years, both in large farms and in the gardens of summer residents.
Purpose
The walk-behind tractor is used for a wide range of tasks in the agricultural industry:
- soil plowing;
- cultivation and harrowing;
- removing weeds and other small plant objects.
If you use auxiliary attachments, you can perform other utility and transport work:
- shipping;
- haymaking;
- tidying up the lawn;
- snow removal;
- tidying sidewalk paths;
- planting and digging potatoes.

Uniqueness of Ugra
“Ugra” can boast of something that no other walk-behind tractor has at all. The Ugra walk-behind tractor was initially produced with a pair of PTOs. Most likely, the designers of such equipment foresaw the possibility of equipping their brainchild with the AMPK-1 adapter. Conveyor production of this component was launched nine years after the release of the first batch of Ugra walk-behind tractors - three years ago.
“Adapter” in simple language is the driver’s drive module.
What is AMPK-1. In simple terms, it is a platform that includes a seat and chassis. Something similar to the AMPK-1 adapter was previously produced on the basis of equipment from other manufacturers. However, only in our case the torque is transmitted to the adapter, and the walk-behind tractor, after coupling with the adapter, becomes a vehicle with all-wheel drive. That is, the result is a mini-tractor. The adapter makes it possible to install any passive attachments used on the base walk-behind tractor. Plus, a person does not have to “walk” the walk-behind tractor during field work.
You can also attach the largest walk-behind trailer to the AMPK-1 adapter and transport loads from 500 kg, since due to all-wheel drive the traction force is doubled. Some owners even manage to pull stuck rather large cars out of captivity using a Ugra with an adapter.
Some fans of fishing and hunting can boast of Ugra walk-behind tractors equipped with an AMPK-1 adapter. For such consumers, the equipment in question replaces an ATV. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, we are talking about the most affordable four-wheel drive 4-wheel vehicle on the market.
The weight of AMPK-1 is 80 kg. Its main structural elements:
- braking system with parking brake;
- universal hitch that allows you to install attachments;
- system that lifts units;
- pedal system that lowers the units to the ground.
Due to the presence of the AMPK-1 walk-behind tractor in the equipment, we can conclude that the Ugra is a unique walk-behind tractor. There is no alternative technology in which an additional module would transmit torque to the wheels.

Let's try to figure it out
"Oka" is almost the most utilitarian and simple walk-behind tractor on the market. This is exactly how it was created back in the USSR. “Ugra” is considered a fresh development, which became available on the market in 2009. The designers of the Kaluga plant implemented in their development the lion’s share of what is successfully used in popular walk-behind tractors of a similar class.
If you study the technical characteristics, these two models are very similar, and according to some numbers they are completely identical. In terms of layout and weight distribution, everything is almost the same. Moreover, “Oka” and “Ugra” are produced at the same enterprise.
Running in the engine
When purchasing a new walk-behind tractor, you need to run in the engine. Principles of running in the Oka walk-behind tractor with the Lifan engine:
- running-in duration – 30 hours;
- tillage depth in one pass – 10 cm (in 2-3 steps);
- use of the throttle lever - no more than 2/3 of the stroke;
- the duration of a continuous tillage operation is no more than 2 hours;
- Checking the oil in the motor and gearbox is mandatory before starting work.
If these principles are not followed, destruction of the connecting rod and piston module, jamming of the motor and wear of the gearbox may occur.

The history of the creation of the walk-behind tractor
OKA walk-behind tractors are the consumer name for walk-behind tractors made on the basis of the MB-1, produced in the eighties, a compact device with a dry weight of up to 100 kg, capable of performing various agricultural work. This device can be useful both on a household plot and on a small farmland. It can also be useful for mechanizing labor-intensive processes in certain areas of large farms. Supplied with a pair of rubber wheels and four cutters.
In a fairly short period of time, this model range has received several modifications. This is primarily due to the engine, it has become more powerful. Improvements also affected the control system. Metal rods were replaced with cables. The weak point in the gearbox has been eliminated. All these changes fully affected the MB-1D3 released in 2010.
Along with the above-mentioned model, earlier modifications are also present in the implementation, and even on the official website, sometimes the information is contradictory and contains a number of inaccuracies. In this regard, when choosing a model, you should carefully read the attached technical documentation, which is done at the highest level, in order to make the right choice.
Advantages and disadvantages
All models of Oka walk-behind tractors have many positive qualities, namely:
- chain reducer;
- the steering column can be adjusted in height;
- the device is equipped with a box-shaped muffler, which helps reduce noise;
- presence of a wide range of speeds;
- small turning radius, which provides good ability to maneuver in a limited area;
- the ability to install devices from other walk-behind tractors;
- small size, which is a plus when transporting it in a car;

Along with the advantages, the walk-behind tractor also has disadvantages that were identified when handling this model:
- when processing heavy soil, difficulties arise due to its low mass;
- rapid wear of drive belts.
As for the drive belts, several spares are included in the kit. Plus, drive belts are a consumable item and shouldn't last forever. These negative aspects, in comparison with the positive qualities, fade into the background when using technology. The main advantage of the walk-behind tractor is its low cost, which ensures high sales in rural areas.
Owner reviews
Victor, Penza:
“I have an Oka DM-1 with a 6 hp engine. — so its main drawback is great noise. Therefore, the engine mainly performs its functions at medium speeds. I’ve been using it for 5 years, there are no comments, I don’t even consider replacing the belt and spark plugs, these are consumables. My opinion: the most important thing is to change the engine oil once a season and clean the air filter. This walk-behind tractor does not need any modifications. I almost always use my eye in first gear, mainly for digging up potatoes, and sometimes I also use the plow. I mill and use the unit with a trolley at second speed. Two speeds are enough for me, especially since the engine is powerful. The main disadvantages, in my opinion, are: it’s difficult to check the transmission oil level, and it’s difficult to change, you need to roll the plug on its side. The handle beam is well adjustable. In general, I give this technique a big thumbs up.”
Nikolay, Rostov-on-Don:
“As the owner of this mini-tractor, I like the fact that ball bearings have been installed on the Oka for a long time, and if there is enough lubricant, the chains will generally last forever. In my village, all my neighbors have about 20 walk-behind tractors, and all of them are Oka. There were never any problems with spare parts, and the chains never broke like in Chinese walk-behind tractors. They say that sometimes there can be a problem with shifting gears, but I haven’t had any of these. Technique fire!
