Kamaz 4350. Main parameters and technical characteristics. Video reviews and testimonials

KamAZ 4350 is an all-wheel drive truck with a 4 by 4 wheel arrangement. The development of equipment for transporting 30-40 people and the ability to operate in various conditions began back in the 1970s. However, the appearance of the Mustang line had to wait almost 30 years. Its first representative was the KamAZ 4326, which did not fully meet the army’s requirements, so it was soon replaced by other models with better maneuverability and cross-country ability.

The designers of the Kama Automobile Plant simultaneously developed 3 cars of the Mustang line: KamAZ 4350 (4 by 4), KamAZ 5350 (6 by 6) and KamAZ 6350 (8 by 8). These cars differed solely in the number of axles and had a high degree of unification (up to 85%).

The first prototypes were presented in 1990, their tests started a year later and turned out to be very successful. At the Kama Automobile Plant they were preparing to open serial production of the KamAZ 4350, but then there was a large-scale fire, which forced the suspension of the modification of the models. A new batch of testing machines was assembled only in 1995. At the same time, over the course of 5 years, the design of the car was noticeably altered. Thus, the chassis was modernized and a new 10-speed manual transmission was developed.

Serial production of KamAZ 4350 started in 2001. In 2007, the car’s engine line was updated (the model began to be equipped with a KamAZ-740.31-240 unit). Currently, production of the equipment continues. Most of the KamAZ 4350 produced is intended for military use.

Purpose of KamAZ 4350

4350 Kamaz is a unique military vehicle, one of the best in its class. Belongs to the all-terrain vehicle category. Produced by a Russian plant located in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny (Russia). This truck belongs to a subsection of cars called "Mustang". Serial production of such vehicles was launched in 1997. The prototype of the 4350 model was the Kamaz 4326, but later it was replaced by the Kamaz 4350, which fully complies with military needs. All vehicles produced under this marking meet the tasks of the army, have remarkable maneuverability and good cross-country ability even off-road.

Kamaz 4350 belongs to the category of flatbed trucks. It can be equipped with equipment necessary for the work of border troops. Over time, 4350 began to be used not only in the border troops.

Available modification - 43501 TTX. And in the Mustang family, this model is one of the smallest. Its carrying capacity is 3 thousand kg, and its curb weight is 7 thousand kg.

Features of army vehicles:

  • can overcome slopes of up to 20 -30 degrees;
  • can overcome water obstacles 1.74 meters deep;
  • Kama-1260 tires with parameters 425/85 R21;
  • turning radius 10 m.

History of creation and scope of application

Specialists from the Kama Automobile Plant began developing the multi-purpose model of the Mustang series during the existence of the USSR (in 1987).

According to the given conditions, the new truck had to withstand high-altitude conditions and operate at altitudes of up to 4000 m above sea level.

In addition to the standard cargo platform, it was planned to install operational-tactical systems and special superstructures on it.

To reduce the cost of developing a car, the designers of the Kama Automobile Plant decided to unify the components and parts of the new product as much as possible. As a result, the level of unification for the KamAZ 5350 model was 85%.

The first prototypes of an interesting truck were presented in the early 90s. The plant assembled a pilot batch in 1995, showing it at the Nizhny Novgorod exhibition.

The model contained all the advanced technical solutions of that time (dependent spring suspensions built on semi-elliptical springs, drive axles with two-stage gearboxes, power steering and a transfer case with a range-shifter).

KamAZ 5350 was the first in the brand’s line to receive a cross-axle differential locking system on the rear axle, which significantly increased its cross-country ability.

To ensure high speed in off-road conditions, the designers “awarded” the model with a range hydraulic transmission, including a classic manual gearbox and torque converter. However, it was not possible to start serial production of modifications with this transmission. The car's capabilities were significantly increased by a winch with high traction force.

Currently, production of the KamAZ 5350 model continues. At the same time, the product line of the Mustang series is constantly expanding.

So, in 2004, the Kama Automobile Plant presented two truck tractors, a version with a shortened side platform, a truck with a 15-ton payload capacity and a long-wheelbase truck, built on the basis of the KamAZ 5350 vehicle.

Chassis are also used for a number of other models: KamAZ 53502, KamAZ 53503, KamAZ 53504. Some of them are used as civilian tractors with improved technical characteristics.

At the same time, the main advantage of the model is reliability and maneuverability. KamAZ 5350 confidently drives over uneven terrain, potholes and bumps and is distinguished by high maneuverability. Due to its high technical characteristics, the model remains in demand today.

What does the cabin look like?

There were several interesting changes to the cabin of the Mustang and 4350 models. It was first modified in 2005 after parachute tests, and it was then that the cabin was strengthened and strengthened.

History also stores information about the KamAZ 430 modification “Motherwort”, but it did not find widespread use among the military and was not developed much. The cabin of this Kamaz model was closed, as was the body.

The instrument panel is flat, with a display that shows all engine activity, including possible errors. Error codes can be studied in more detail in the engine operating instructions. Models are available both with and without a sleeping place (depending on the modification and year of manufacture, as well as special order).

Device

KamAZ 4350 is the “junior” model of the Mustang series and has a 4 by 4 wheel arrangement. The front and rear suspensions are based on springs and are additionally equipped with anti-roll bars, which allow the vehicle to maintain control when driving on uneven roads. This feature is very important for military vehicles.

For equipment intended for the army, there are increased requirements for cross-country ability, therefore the KamAZ 4350 is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission with a 3-code switching mechanism KamAZ 142 (5 forward speeds, 1 reverse speed). Modernization of the transmission made it possible to increase the service life by 15-20%. The car is also offered with a 10-speed manual transmission with a front splitter, which significantly increases the vehicle's cross-country ability.

Torque is transmitted from the engine to the gearbox using a dry friction single-plate clutch (pressure plate). Coil springs are installed peripherally, and the hydraulic clutch drive is equipped with a follower mechanism and a pneumatic-hydraulic booster. The rear axle has a 2-speed gearbox with a locking center differential and double final drive. The front axle has a non-disconnectable drive.

The service braking system includes a 2-circuit pneumatic drive that acts on the brake devices of the front and rear axles (separate action). The brake is controlled using a foot pedal located in the cab. To reduce speed and come to a complete stop, a backup brake system combined with a parking brake is used. The latter is equipped with an emergency brake release drive, which makes it possible to act on energy accumulators in the event of a compressed air leak. To activate the auxiliary braking system, an engine retarder is used, which closes the exhaust pipes and blocks the flow of fuel to the engine. There is a system of control devices in the cabin to monitor the operation of the brake systems.

A metal cabin with pneumatic seats and comfortable visibility has been developed for the KamAZ 4350. The chairs have several adjustments. The cabin design differs little from other models of the Kama Automobile Plant. In the cabin, in addition to heating and ventilation systems, there is space for a radio. The controls are located at a comfortable distance for the driver.

KamAZ 4350 can be equipped with a body or a booth with a various set of equipment, including a refrigerator, sink, safe and other appliances.

About cross-country ability

Earlier we talked about the tire inflation system from the cab. What does this give? Few people know, but this is a very important parameter when crossing swampy or sandy terrain. A pronounced tread and high ground clearance are not enough for the car to confidently overcome off-road conditions.

For a larger contact area, it is necessary to remove some of the air from the tires. This is the only way to ensure the vehicle has effective cross-country ability, which the KamAZ-6350 Mustang does an excellent job of. In addition, there are air locks, a transfer case and all-wheel drive.

Reviews say that wide-profile tires and a properly designed chassis make this truck a real all-terrain vehicle.

With a length of almost 10 meters, the maximum lifting angle of the machine is 31 degrees. The depth of the ford to be overcome is up to 174 centimeters, and the ditch - 140. The maximum angle for overcoming the slope is 20 degrees.

Advantages

The main advantage of the all-wheel drive KamAZ is its cross-country ability. The car is capable of driving where another would get stuck up to its mirrors in a swamp. In this case, the truck can transport artillery behind it. Despite its long dimensions, this car surprises with its ability to negotiate slopes.

Also, the car has a minimum of electronics. There is essentially nothing to break here. And you can repair a car almost in the field. Even with a broken tire, this car continues its journey.

The compressor is capable of maintaining tire pressure even after several shots from a machine gun.

The truck is able to start in the most severe frost (despite the fact that it is a diesel engine) and does not overheat in the heat. By the way, many civilian KamAZ models also have a similar property. A lot of models of equipment are used in the Far North.

Multi-purpose army vehicle

All the improvements of these KamAZ-4350 models made it possible to solve the issue of providing army units with excellent vehicles. The machines were repeatedly tested in various conditions. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the performance characteristics of the KamAZ 4350 and its modifications are the best suited for using the vehicle in airborne operations.

These vehicles overcome slopes with a slope of 20%, freely climb slopes with a surface slope of 30%, drive through a ditch 1.4 meters wide and easily pass a ford 1.74 meters deep. The design allows KamAZ to overcome obstacles on the plain with a height of 55 cm. The ground clearance of these vehicles is 390 mm, the outer turning radius is 10.3 meters. The car is equipped with Kama-1260 425/85 R21 tires.

For the airborne troops, the frame of the car was not only shortened, but made lower, because of this, wheel arches appeared and the rear overhang of the car was reduced. Additional equipment installed on these trucks: benches in the back for transporting personnel, as well as equipment for repairs in the field.

Airborne landing as a test for the KamAZ-4350 Mustang flatbed truck was carried out several times, for the first time in 2005. The results of parachute tests on a parachute platform did not disappoint the designers, but forced them to strengthen the vehicle’s cabin, which was significantly damaged during a hard landing.

But the KamAZ “Pustynnik” with a closed cab and body was produced only in a single copy. This vehicle never found wide use in military units; after testing in real conditions, this development was mothballed.

Various bodies used in civilian production are mounted on the main base of the 4350 model. Most often these are flatbed trucks for transporting workers and shift buses with a closed body. Cars are convenient to use for transporting shift workers at quarry deposits in the absence of main roads.

The price of such cars, depending on the mileage, ranges from 550 thousand rubles to 2800 thousand. Like all cars of this Russian brand, KamAZ 4350 is easy to repair due to the availability of spare parts; the price can be clarified directly at the factory, which will be offered to you by at least 10 suppliers of these parts in the region.

    Peculiarities

KamAZ-4350 is distinguished by high cross-country ability and excellent resistance to harsh operating conditions. The truck is able to operate properly in high mountain areas and at low sub-zero temperatures.

The components and assemblies of the truck have a large margin of safety, so reliability is not in doubt. Compared to its three-axle counterparts, this model also has excellent maneuverability. This is largely due to the shortened wheelbase.

Although the cabin can hardly be called very comfortable, all the necessary amenities are present inside. Namely, a powerful heating system, a driver’s seat with air suspension, an informative dashboard, and excellent visibility.

In terms of maintenance, the car turned out to be very successful. Its design is simple and understandable, and thanks to its high unification with other models of the Kama Automobile Plant, finding the necessary spare parts will not cause any particular difficulties.

Drivers also note good power performance. The engine produces enough power to perform a wide range of tasks and has excellent traction over a wide rpm range. In addition, it is unpretentious and is able to work properly even on low-quality fuel, which is a big plus for military equipment.

    Loading platform

The standard version of this truck has an all-metal cargo platform with folding sides. It can be supplemented with a removable awning frame that protects the transported cargo from external factors. In addition to cargo, such a platform allows you to transport passengers. Folding benches are installed inside especially for this purpose.

The overall length of the platform is 4890 millimeters and the width is 2470 millimeters. At the same time, the height of the sides reaches 750 millimeters.

    Price

It is quite difficult to purchase a KamAZ-4350 truck in new condition, since it is produced primarily for armies and various special services. But you can still find new army models. On average, the cost of these varies from 7.5 million to 7.9 million rubles.

As for used ones, such options are also presented in very small quantities. The price tag for used equipment ranges from 700 thousand to 2.8 million rubles, depending on the year of manufacture, type of modification, technical condition, and mileage.

    Reviews from owners and drivers

    • I have a Kamaz 4350 - a good-quality passenger all-wheel drive vehicle for solving any kind of problem in serious off-road conditions. The car is from the Soviet period, in operation since 2005. Current mileage is 230 thousand km. The car is fully operational and is serviced only as scheduled. I have a version with a 4x4 wheel arrangement, and there are even more top-end 6x6 and even 8x8. Loading capacity is about 6 tons. The 240-horsepower unit is modernized and adapted to Euro-2 standards. Thanks to capacious fuel tanks, the range reaches 1200 kilometers. The engine is coupled with a 10-speed manual transmission, which is not designed for quick gear changes, but at the same time, it is quite reliable and not prone to oil burns. In my version, the 4350 is equipped with a pneumatic seat, but it is still uncomfortable inside due to poor sound insulation. Yes, the seat has a sufficient range of adjustments, as does the steering column, and it is worth noting good visibility thanks to the high seating position and large side mirrors. But it still feels like the car hasn’t been fully polished – hence the constant breakdowns. Fuel consumption is 30-35 liters.
    • I've been driving a KamAZ 4350 since 2015. This maintained SUV is capable of carrying not only 6 tons of cargo, but also passengers, regardless of the quality of the road. I have a version with a dual-circuit pneumatic drive, which is connected to the front and rear axle. Thus, it is a full-fledged four-wheel drive truck. There is also a spare brake system that works in conjunction with the parking brake with the possibility of emergency release. You can get used to driving a car quite quickly if you have the necessary experience driving trucks. The ergonomics pleased me - all the levers and switches are located in convenient places, but the quality of the materials is disappointing. The interior is all shabby and has scratches, as well as a specific smell. It’s clear that they worked hard in this car, and didn’t drive tea like truck drivers. When driving off-road, a colossal load is placed on the chassis, but my Kamaz can handle it so far. Fuel consumption ranges from 30 liters or more depending on the load.
    • I work on a used Soviet-made KamAZ 4350. The car is equipped with a 240-horsepower diesel engine and a 10-speed manual transmission with a range-shifter and a double divider, i.e., in essence, it is a modernized 5-speed transmission. Its operation is simple and clear - there is no need to “search” for transmissions. I like the smooth ride of the Kamaz 4350, even when driving over serious bumps. The 12-liter engine is quite thirsty by modern standards, and under load I manage to achieve 40 liters per hundred. When empty, it yields 30 liters. In general, this is a lot for a 240-horsepower diesel engine. The volume of motor fluid consumption is also very impressive. The power steering helps provide adequate feedback, and yet, it is of great benefit when maneuvering in tight spaces - it is much easier to turn than at a decent city speed. From the cabin you can clearly hear the rolling of huge toothy tires, and sometimes you get very tired from this noise, and after a long day of work it felt like I was in hard labor. The diesel engine also rumbles noticeably - so much so that vibrations from it are transmitted to the front panel, pedals and steering wheel. The Kamaz 4350 is an ideal solution for work, and it’s also suitable for a picnic and hunting.
    • Kamaz 4350 is a good old SUV with an extensive history. I have a passenger modification with a carrying capacity of 5 tons, i.e. you can still carry a decent load. I bought it for pleasure, to periodically go off-road in my free time. You can go to the taiga with a big company. It’s clear that this is primarily an army truck for military and work needs, but we, civilians, also find a purpose for it. Hunting, fishing, driving along long climbs and deep ruts, muddy dirt roads - the KamAZ 4350 overcomes all this with ease. The car is equipped with a 10-speed manual transmission and a 240-horsepower diesel engine, which complement each other perfectly. The box reveals the potential of the internal combustion engine well and is able to “digest” its high torque. On severe off-road conditions, fuel consumption reaches 35 liters under load with a small load and the company of fishermen. The most comfortable seat is for the driver; it is equipped with air suspension. The rest are sitting on stools. Everything inside cracks and squeals, but the Kamaz does not fall apart yet and does not fail over long distances. Spare parts are available throughout Russia, and it is possible to carry out repairs on your own.

    Manual

The operating instructions consist of the following parts:

    1. General performance characteristics of the vehicle. The operating temperature of the vehicle (-45…+40°C), the requirements for the tow hitch, and the climatic conditions in which the equipment will operate without failures are indicated here.
    2. Brief description of all systems. All major features of the engine, transmission, frame, fifth wheel, suspension, steering, brakes, tire pressure control, electrical equipment, etc. are presented here.
    3. Operation of KamAZ in the warm and cold seasons. This section describes what needs to be done to ensure that the equipment works without failures both in winter and in summer.
    4. Procedure and frequency of maintenance. This section indicates the procedure for carrying out maintenance, how many kilometers it is necessary to carry out maintenance 1 and 2, and also contains a list of tools that will be needed to carry out these works.
    5. Possible malfunctions. Here is a list of minor breakdowns and how to fix them.
    6. Conditions for storing a vehicle - what are the requirements for the room in which the vehicle will be parked.

The KamAZ 4350 all-terrain truck has a multi-purpose purpose: transportation of various cargoes, installation of military structures, etc. This model has universal performance characteristics - 4x4 wheel arrangement, dimensions that allow movement on roads for various purposes, temperature range during operation - from -50 to +50. KAMAZ can also be used in terrain of various types of complexity, with harsh climates: the vehicles remain fully operational at 100% humidity, wind gusts of 20 m/s, tactical and technical characteristics (except for fuel consumption) do not change even in mountainous areas at an altitude of up to 4000 m.

One of the main parts of any car is the engine, so the manufacturer recommends paying a lot of attention to it. It is necessary to check pipelines, oil, air, and fuel filters daily.

Oil, coolant and fuel must be selected in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

It is forbidden to start driving when the coolant temperature is below +40, the optimal option is +70°C.
