MAZ 551605 is a series of three-axle dump trucks with a 6 by 4 wheel arrangement. The model is based on the popular MAZ 5516 family. The prototype premiered in the spring of 2002. An improved YaMZ-238DE2 unit appeared in the engine compartment of the car. The MAZ 551605 chassis was later used for the installation of various equipment and superstructures (concrete mixers, dump platforms, municipal vehicles and others).
MAZ 551605 “inherited” the main advantages of the MAZ 5516 model. MAZ 551605 was developed to transport large volumes of cargo, which is why it is based on a high-strength frame. At the rear of the frame there are 2 drive axles connected by a cardan shaft. The gearboxes are configured in such a way that the number of revolutions of the middle axle is greater than that of the last one. Since it is the middle axle that is the busiest, this solution provides optimal traction. The model uses a standard chassis with spring front suspension and spring-balance rear suspension.
The model of transmission installed on the MAZ 551605 is largely determined by the type of unit. Most of the modifications are equipped with an 8-speed manual transmission YaMZ-238M. In frosty weather or hot weather, this truck never made you worry about reliability, breakdowns, etc. The vehicle is equipped with a 180-horsepower engine. The brakes are quite powerful and stop effectively. The car's maintainability is at a high level, but in the event of a fuel leak or other serious problems, you will have to spend a tidy sum. It is advisable to seal air connections not only with sealant, but also with rubber rings. The tubes must be reinforced with rubber hoses to prevent anything from bursting. But the clutch is very tight, the cab is not sprung, and the truck’s maneuverability in the winter leaves much to be desired. At least with stock wheels. I've been working on the MAZ-5551 for about six months, and I'm not at all impressed with the car. There are many more disadvantages than advantages. Constant breakdowns plague me. Maybe the whole point is that before me this truck was used carelessly, it was regularly overloaded and did not spare the car. The car has a terrible lift. By the way, I have a 10-ton dump truck with a lift cylinder mounted in the middle of the body - who ever thought of that? For example, I take six tons of screenings and deliver it to two different places - 3 tons for each place. I arrive at the first point and unload the first half (3 tons), at this moment I release the body, which simply falls onto the frame. As a result, the frame is heavily overloaded due to the fact that the lift is located in the center. If you deliver it to four different places, you can damage the frame, after which the truck will be inoperable. In general, six months passed, during which time I changed the lift valve three times. Another time I had to install a new lift pump. An unsprung cabin is a serious drawback; because of this, it shakes violently, there are terrible noises and vibrations, and the clutch fails. The on-board electronics were replaced once. The compressor is very weak and lacks power. A car with a 185 horsepower engine that consumes 20-25 liters per 100 km. On a slippery road, slipping is possible, for example in snow or on an icy road, even when loaded. In this case, blocking does not help. But in the summer there is no slipping, the car rushes through the mud like a tank.

I have a modification of a dump truck, I liked the original, strict design of the cabin. For this class, the truck is very economical even when loaded. I have been working on this dump truck since 2008. I will note the advantages of the cabin - comfortable, roomy, with three full seats. Under the hood is a YaMZ-236 engine with a turbine, power 180 horsepower. The transmission is five-speed manual, and the brakes are equipped with a pneumatic system. Then they provided me with a MAZ-5551, this was my first experience with this truck. Now I drive an updated car, but then it was just an indescribable feeling. A wonderful engine - with a pleasant growling sound from six cylinders. Very durable design, and without any electronics. A machine with a carrying capacity of 8 tons, although I loaded 11 tons. Despite this, the car pulled confidently and did not “stumble.” Of course, it was not without its shortcomings. The car is equipped with a single rear axle, so if it falls into the ground, you will need a cable. And as a tug you will need some kind of all-wheel drive special vehicle, because the heavy MAZ-5551 cannot be pulled out so easily. I say this to mean that a loaded car is not capable of proving itself off-road. As a last resort, you need to install wider-profile and toothy tires. Advantages and disadvantages
As noted above, the MAZ-5516 has quite a few pros and cons. Taking into account the first versions, it is worth paying attention to the poor design of the cabin and the lack of conditions for comfortable work in it.

Development
The first prototype of the modernized car, designated MAZ-551605, was created in April 2002. The YaMZ-238DE2 diesel engine was used as a power unit. Subsequently, the base chassis began to be used for the installation of various superstructures - dump bodies of various configurations, concrete mixers, utility vehicles, etc. Thanks to the powerful main engine, it was possible to ensure high technical characteristics of the MAZ-551605.
