PAZ 4230 is the embodiment of advanced design developments

The development of the modern market for urban and intercity passenger transportation is impossible without new high-quality bus models. They must meet safety and environmental requirements, and be comfortable for passengers and the driver. One of these models of new modern transport is the PAZ 4230.

At the Pavlovsk Automobile Plant in the late nineties, production was restructured. It allowed the company to switch to models of middle and large class buses that it had never produced before. Initially produced only in Pavlovo, the bus belongs to the middle class. The production of this model was transferred to the capacity of the Kurgan Bus Plant. Both plants operate as part of the RusPromAvto association.

Since 2002, buses of this model range have been produced in Kurgan for urban and suburban routes under the PAZ-4230 “Aurora” - KAVZ brand.

    Engine

The power unit, which uses PAZ-4230-03 from the well-known company Cummins as its main workforce, meets all safety requirements and standards, including environmental ones - Euro-3.

The engine is capable of producing operating power equal to 185 horsepower. This figure is more than sufficient for using the vehicle in the city.

Diesel fuel, which PAZ-4230-03 uses as the main working fluid, is economical and, when burned, produces a higher efficiency (compared to gasoline), up to 50%.

In winter, the interior of this model is as warm as in summer, because the liquid heating system (which operates from the engine cooling system) coupled with an independent heater helps maintain a positive temperature in the bus interior, thereby ensuring the efficient operation of this vehicle. Even for these properties, it’s probably worth buying a PAZ-4230-03.

From all the above features, it is worth concluding that the PAZ-4230-03 is a successful model of domestic production. Reliable and proven components of this bus have a fairly simple design and great functionality, which ultimately makes this bus a convenient mode of transport.

Since 2002, buses of this model range have been produced in Kurgan for urban and suburban routes under the PAZ-4230 “Aurora” - KAVZ brand.

    Design Features

The length of the carriage layout of the all-metal body PAZ 4230-01 is 8370 mm. It is load-bearing, in a three-door design (one door is for the driver), width 2500 mm, bus height 2995 mm. The convenience of boarding passengers through single-leaf doors is due to the low location of the first stage of the cabin. The doors extend outwards and are equipped with a pneumatic drive.

The designers increased the service life of the PAZ 4230 bus to eight years by creating a body made of galvanized steel sheets on a welded frame structure. The wheel arches of the bus were also galvanized. The interior trim is plastic. The body at the back and front is made of fiberglass panels.

The PAZ 4230 models differ from the usual ones with a panoramic front windshield, which improves visibility for the driver. This is also facilitated by large, electrically heated rearview mirrors that can be adjusted from the driver’s seat. The optics installed on the bus are Russian, from the Samara Automobile Plant.

Since the car is intended for intercity transportation of up to 300 km, the interior is equipped with 31 semi-soft separate seats with high adjustable backrests. Under the seats outside the cabin there is a luggage compartment of 1.75 m3. Above the heads of passengers there are shelves for hand luggage, covered with fabric.

The interior trim is not a permanent option and can be ordered individually. The interior ventilation system is natural. Air access occurs through hatches made of aluminum alloys and window vents. Windows are available in two versions: glued or with rubber seals. In addition, the buyer can order an individual lighting and air conditioning and ventilation system. The electrical circuit of the PAZ 4230 is double-circuit (for the passenger compartment and the engine).

The PAZ-4230 closed-type liquid heating system heats the interior in winter, working from the engine cooling system. A foreign-made autonomous heater is also installed. This heater operates when the engine is off and can warm the engine at low temperatures.

    Review of bus technical characteristics

The main technical characteristics of PAZ 4230 meet international requirements for environmental friendliness. Buses of this series were initially equipped with a Minsk 136 l/s diesel engine. Later modifications began to be equipped with the German Cummins ISBe with greater (150 l/s) Euro-3 class power.

A bus equipped with a 105-liter fuel tank and such an engine travels at a speed of 110 km/h. The reference fuel consumption is from 17 to 19 liters per 100 km, a good economic indicator for this class of buses. The tank is located between the side members of the body, the engine is mounted longitudinally on the rear cross member of the frame.

The cylinders of a four-stroke engine have a vertical in-line arrangement. A non-separable full-flow oil filter is installed on the car; combined lubrication occurs under pressure from the pump and splashing. Both bus suspensions are leaf springs with ends in rubber cushions. A stabilizer bar is installed on the front.

PAZ 4230 buses of all modifications of this series are equipped with spare parts and parts with an increased service life: the engine, gearbox and axles are designed for 1,000,000 kilometers. Both axles are from ZIL, the rear one is equipped with a hypoid gear, which ensures a smooth ride for the vehicle even at full load. Additional springs are mounted on the rear to ensure smooth running. Double-acting telescopic suspension shock absorbers with hydraulics.

The clutch with the hydraulic booster is a single-disc dry diaphragm clutch. The five-speed PAZ 4230 gearbox with synchronized gear shifting is produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant, mechanical. The steering mechanism of MAZ buses with a hydraulic cylinder power steering. The hydraulic booster operates from a gear pump, which is driven by the camshaft gear.

As with all modern PAZ models, the braking system meets transportation safety requirements. In case of an emergency stop, the car will cover 31.1 meters of braking distance. The brake system is pneumatic.

Working system with wear-resistant drum mechanisms, the position of the shoes is automatically adjusted, the two circuits are separated along the axes. An anti-lock braking system is installed.

Spring-loaded electric accumulators act on the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels using a drive, ensuring the operation of the parking brake system.

Buses are produced on a 4x2 wheelbase. Modifications PAZ-4230-01, Paz-4230-02 are equipped with 6.0-20 disc wheels with single-ply 14-ply tube tires 8.25-R20 and mounted on eight studs. The maximum load on the axles of this series of buses is 3780-3755 and 7260-7185 for PAZ-4230-01, Paz-4230-02 in accordance with the operating manual.

Production of this series ended in 2008. Paz 4230 has given way to more modern and ergonomic vehicles; on the secondary market, depending on the configuration and condition, the price of these buses ranges from 900 thousand to 1,500,000 rubles.
