The competition for efficiency among drivers of the new generation KAMAZ-5490 truck tractors, which took place in Naberezhnye Chelny, is a significant event in many respects. This was a test drive of a new truck for Russian drivers in real conditions - on a section of the M7 Volga highway. Methane-powered cars are not a new thing for a long time. Recently, at KAMAZ and in the whole country, this topic has been discussed especially actively. As part of this project, the automotive giant held a scientific conference for consumers of natural gas vehicles.
Difficulties in operating gas equipment on a diesel engine
There are only three reasons:
- The auto-ignition temperature of diesel is 380 - 390 degrees Celsius, but gas (be it methane or propane) is about 700 degrees
- Accordingly, gaseous fuel must be ignited. But there are no spark plugs in a diesel engine!
- The octane rating of pure diesel is less than that of gas, 50 - 60 versus 110 - 120 units. To prevent the engine from going into overdrive, you need to reduce either the octane number or the compression ratio
As you can see, the implementation is quite complex, but at the moment only two solutions have been found that allow the use of gas on a diesel unit.
