History of creation and release

The developers managed to build an advanced model that combines high performance and technical indicators. In comparison with the KamAZ-5511 modification, not only the power parameters have changed in the new model. The truck has been transformed in appearance. Production of KamAZ-55111 continued until 2012. After this, the model was replaced by an improved version - KamAZ-65115.

The KamAZ-55111 truck is designed taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of the earlier KamAZ 5511 model. The first copies of the new dump truck rolled off the plant’s assembly line in 1988, the last truck of this modification was released in 2012.

On the basis of the platform, not only dump trucks with increased payload capacity (13 tons) were produced, but also a variety of army equipment was installed. The military model was attracted by its high maneuverability, ease of maintenance and operation.

However, the main purpose of a dump truck is to transport construction materials over short distances.

Structurally, KamAZ-55111 is a frame truck with a front engine and a 6*4 wheel arrangement. The dump truck is distinguished by rear unloading; the body is equipped with a heating system, which is carried out using exhaust gases from the muffler.

Power unit and fuel consumption of KamAZ-55111

The domestically produced diesel engine 740.51-240 was chosen as the main power unit for this model. This eight-cylinder diesel engine is distinguished by a V-shaped cylinder arrangement, it has a turbocharging function and a cooling system for the consumed air.

The working volume of the power unit is 10.86 liters, it develops a rated power of 240 hp at a rotation speed of 2,200 rpm. The engine uses cooling technology in which the fan is driven through a special fluid coupling.

Thus, a sharp change in the angular speed of the fan when the engine speed drops or increases is eliminated. The motor is not highly environmentally friendly; it complies with Euro 2 standards.

It should be mentioned that a small number of KamAZ-55111 dump trucks were equipped with a six-cylinder YaMZ-236 engine with a power of 180 hp.

Transmission and power supply KamAZ-55111

The car is equipped with two manual gearboxes: a five-speed gearbox without a divider with a three-way shift mechanism, with a gear ratio of 7.22, and a ten-speed gearbox with a transfer number of 6.53. To transmit force from the engine to the gearbox, a double-disc diaphragm clutch equipped with a hydraulic drive with a pneumatic booster is used. The clutch and gearbox are controlled remotely from the driver's cabin.

The electrical systems of the KamAZ-55111 dump truck are powered by two 12-volt batteries with a total capacity of 380 A/hour. In addition, the truck is equipped with a voltage regulator and a two-kilowatt 28-volt generator.

Brake system and suspension KamAZ-55111

The KamAZ-55111 vehicle is equipped with four independent braking systems. Despite the presence of common components, all systems can operate autonomously; they are able to effectively perform their function and ensure the safety of the vehicle under any operating conditions.

Each wheel of the dump truck is equipped with drum brakes with a pneumatic dual-circuit drive of separate action (for the front and rear wheels). The radius of the brake drums is 400 millimeters, with a pad width of 140 mm.

Spare brakes are used to stop the car if the main system fails. They consist of four energy accumulators, accelerator valves and air cylinders. The spare brakes are operated by the same lever as the parking brake.

The truck is also equipped with auxiliary brakes.

In addition, the car has a brake release system for compressing the springs of energy accumulators, which are activated when the auxiliary or parking brake is applied.

The main elements of the KamAZ-55111 front suspension are two semi-elliptical springs, which work in conjunction with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. To increase the angular stiffness of the suspension, a transverse stabilizer is used, which increases the vehicle's stability when cornering and when driving on uneven roads.

The rear suspension of KamAZ-55111 is of the balancing type on two semi-elliptic springs with reaction bars. Since the rear axles of the truck are subject to greater loads, the suspension is strengthened by having smaller springs.

Design features and scope of application

The KamAZ-53212 onboard tractor is intended for transporting a variety of cargo, including as part of a road train (with a trailer) on roads designed to accommodate vehicles with an axle load of up to 10 t. Most often, these machines work with trailers GKB-8350, GKB-8352 and GKB-8355, which have the same standard size as the truck body.

The KamAZ-53212 body is a metal platform with a wooden floor; with folding side and rear sides. The installation of an awning is provided, which turns the flatbed truck into a wagon, into that very long-range “tramp”.

The main distinctive feature of the KamAZ-53212 is its extended wheelbase, which significantly increases the model’s application possibilities. From the factory, KamAZ-53212 trucks were equipped with a metal platform that could hold up to 34 cubic meters of cargo, and when coupled with a trailer, the total volume is 64 cubic meters. Modifications

After 1990, a modification of the truck appeared. Main changes:

The modernized KamAZ 55111 became more lifting: it could transport up to 13 tons. However, outwardly it can easily be confused with KamAZ 5511.

Loading platform and dump mechanism

The standard volume of the all-metal box-shaped loading platform of this truck model is 6.6 cubic meters. The platform is tilted in the direction of the front side. The visor reliably covers all free space between the body and the cabin. The bottom of the KamAZ-55111 dump body is heated by exhaust gases and exhaust pipes, which prevents freezing and sticking of bulk cargo to its base.

The dumping mechanism of the KamAZ-55111 truck consists of a power take-off; oil tank; oil drive; three-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinder; oil pump; pneumatic drive; electro-pneumatic valves and limitation valves.

The power take-off is single-stage. Control occurs from the driver's cabin using an electro-pneumatic starter. The dump body reaches its maximum elevation angle of 60 degrees in 19 seconds, and completely lowers to its standard position in 18 seconds. The volume of the hydraulic system is 33 liters of industrial oil 20 for summer operation, or industrial oil 12 for operation in the winter months.

While the cars were operated according to the planned program adopted in the USSR (maximum 10 years of work - and before being written off), the car was considered reliable, and quite rightly so. A car that has traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers and lived for a couple of decades can no longer be reliable. Even the simple aging of materials must be taken into account here, because only cognac becomes better over the years. But not a car.

The undoubted advantage of this KamAZ, which many people note, is its excellent stove, which is capable of quickly and efficiently heating the interior in any frost, even if the engine is idling.

The excellent visibility from the driver's seat deserves kind words; the ability of the car to clearly hold the road in difficult weather conditions, thanks to the locking of the center differential.

The cross-country ability of KamAZ-53212 is very decent for a vehicle of this class. Valiant melon growers in the 90s looked with amazement at the ordeal of used European and American-made trucks, which, out of inexperience, stuck on the sandy soil of melon fields to load watermelons.

Steep (on asphalt) and powerful cars turned out to be completely helpless on slightly loose soil, where KamAZ trucks drove completely calmly. These same unsightly, in comparison, KamAZ trucks, by the way, pulled the “urban and intelligent” foreign trucks out of unexpected sandy captivity.

Now about the disadvantages, of which there are also many.

Firstly, in KamAZ-53212, both the engine and everything else “snot” with oil. After parking any KamAZ of those years (not only the 53212 model), an indispensable attribute is stains on the asphalt or ground - from oil or diesel fuel. It gradually leaks from it, like from a wild boar wounded during a hunt, and it is almost useless to fight these small but annoying leaks.

Tie wire and a piece of oxygen hose should always be in stock, pneumatics do not stand up to criticism. Main pipes are constantly damaged due to rubbing or simply breaking. The tubes themselves are located in the frame, in rather hard-to-reach places.

Pneumatic cranes also often cannot withstand loads. As a rule, the crane responsible for the axle load fails first, then the triple protection, etc. and so on. In most cases, there is only one reason: oil enters the air from the compressor, which cannot be restored to its ideal form. Oil destroys rubber parts in the system.


Drivers and owners of used KamAZ-53212 are unanimous in the opinion that it is impossible to work simply as a driver on this truck, you need to be (or become) also a mechanic, qualified, self-confident and ready for anything.

Design features

The 55111 series truck is equipped with a durable frame, which is connected to a system of beams and side members with special fasteners. Reliable operation of on-board systems and mechanisms is ensured by hydraulics, which includes such elements as:

  • tank;
  • hydraulic cylinder;
  • oil and pneumatic drive;
  • control valve;
  • limiting valves;
  • power take-off;
  • pneumatic valves operating on electricity;
  • oil pump.

Hydraulics are activated from the driver's cabin of KamAZ 55111.

The car chassis provides for the installation of lightweight wheels manufactured by ZIL. Design features include a spring suspension and a platform that has an all-metal structure, a heating system and a tilting mechanism for rear unloading, equipped with a remote control.

Cabin "KAMAZ-53212"

The cabin in KamAZ-53212 vehicles is three-seater, tilting forward, with noise and thermal insulation; equipped with places for fastening seat belts, with a berth.

The driver's seat is sprung and adjustable in two directions: posture and height. Also, the driver of KamAZ-53212 has the ability to adjust the static deflection of the seat.


True, drivers of KamAZ-53212 categorically do not recommend getting carried away with changes in seat adjustments too often. Because in these cases quite noticeable vibrations begin to appear, which turn out to be quite difficult to eliminate. The height of the cabin allows you to stand in it, feeling quite comfortable.

The KamAZ-53212 cabin has decent thermal and sound insulation characteristics. To minimize distortions and vibrations inevitably caused by wind loads and pressure from the oncoming flow, the cabin is attached to the frame through an elastic suspension.

It can be said without exaggeration that for the eighties of the twentieth century, KamAZ-53212 had one of the best cabin interiors in the Soviet Union (not only among trucks, but also among passenger cars). The instrument panel, which has a progressive design for that era, contains only dials - dial indicators, without any electronics. They are read equally well and accurately under any conditions.

Truck chassis

All wheels of the KamAZ-55111 dump truck are disc wheels, with rim sizes 7.5-20 (190-508)08. Tube tires, pneumatic, sizes – 10.00R20 (280R508) or 11.00 R20 (300 R508). Each wheel is equipped with drum-type brakes, with a drum diameter of 400 mm and a brake lining width of 140 mm. The front suspension consists of two semi-elliptic springs, which work together with two telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers and two hollow rubber compression buffers. The rear suspension is of the balancing type, with two semi-elliptic springs and reaction bars on rubber-metal hinges.

Transmission

The following mechanical gearboxes were used in the transmission of KamAZ-55111 vehicles: 5-speed 14th modification - without a divider, with a final drive ratio of 7.22, and 5-speed 15th modification with a divider and a final drive ratio of 6 ,53. The gearbox drive is mechanical, remote, with a floor lever. With a divider, the number of gears is 10. To transmit torque from the engine to the transmission elements, a diaphragm or friction dry double-disc clutch was used. Clutch control is hydraulic, with pneumatic booster.
