When considering the technical characteristics of the ZIL-MMZ-554m dump truck, it does not immediately become clear to many that in fact this model is the predecessor of the well-known ZIL-130. This prefix indicates the modification of the truck chassis used, which depends on the specific application.

History of the model

The production of ZIL series cars at Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant OJSC began back in 1953. One of the most popular models was the ZIL-554, which rolled off the assembly line in 1957. This model was developed specifically for agriculture. It differed from its predecessors in its standard frame size and the ability to unload goods from three sides.

Over the years of production, a large number of modifications entered the market, which were supplemented and improved over time.

In 1975, ZIL-554-MMZ received the state award “Quality Mark”.

Peculiarities

A distinctive feature of the ZIL-130 MMZ-554 vehicles was their adaptability to roads with poor surfaces. Largely due to this, this car is still popular today. In addition, it is a simple, reliable and unpretentious dump truck.

However, many consider it a long-outdated model. This is due to the small carrying capacity and high fuel consumption. With a load capacity of four tons, the average fuel consumption is thirty liters. When connected to a trailer, consumption increases by another five liters.

Hydraulics

This modification of the ZIL is equipped with a hydraulic tipping mechanism. It consists of such elements as:

  • pump;
  • Switchgear;
  • valve limiter;
  • hydraulic lift;
  • tank required for working fluid;
  • high and low pressure pipeline;
  • control lever;
  • fasteners;
  • PTO.

When the control handle is moved back, the intermediate gear meshes with the gear of the transmission reverse unit, due to which the gearbox switch is activated. At the same time, the pumping element begins to activate, from which the fuel passes through the pipeline and enters the distribution device. After this, the liquid passes into the transport lift. To raise the body, the front distributor control lever is used, and to raise the trailer body, the rear lever is used.

Characteristics of ZIL-MMZ-554

The basic dump truck models initially had two gasoline engine options:

  • With eight cylinders and liquid cooling.
  • With six cylinders and 110 horsepower.

In both versions, A-72 and later A-76 gasoline were used as fuel. The volume of the fuel tank is 175 liters.

Diesel engines D-245, which began to be installed in later models, had a power of up to 150 horsepower. This was enough to accelerate without a trailer to ninety kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption at full load and speed up to forty kilometers per hour is twenty-eight liters. When lifting a loaded car, consumption increases to fifty liters.

The manual transmission has five gears.

To stop when driving on a flat road without slopes at a speed of thirty kilometers per hour, eleven meters are required. The ZIL braking system is pneumatic. Drum brakes.

Production history of ZIL MMZ-554

The production of such vehicles began back in 1953, when the first ZIL MMZ 554 truck was produced. At that time, the model immediately became a leader in the cargo transportation segment throughout the USSR. This was due to the post-war period, when the country was experiencing economic recovery, and the demand for such transport was enormous. Over time, the model range was updated, as well as the technical part of the machines was improved. The most popular was the release of the ZIL MMZ-554M, which was popularly called “Collective Farmer”. This modification was equipped with a dump body, which could be used for various types of work.

The most popular models were produced since 1964 and on their basis the legendary ZIL-130 was later launched. Initially, this vehicle was conceived as a multifunctional platform that would be used for other modifications. Thus, on its basis, vehicles were created for agriculture, transportation of industrial goods, as well as fire trucks.

Modifications of the ZIL MMZ-554 car

In total, a number of different modifications were created on the basis of this platform, some of which are still in use:

  1. A fire engine, which in the period from the 70s in the USSR made up almost 100% of the entire fleet of fire departments.
  2. Aerial platform. It was a widespread modification that was used for a long period of time not only in the USSR, but also in the countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and other socialist states.
  3. Tank. It was used not only for transporting various drinking liquids (water, milk, kvass, etc.), but also various technical mixtures for production.
  4. Pump. This modification took the form of a mobile pumping station, which was also popular in the republics of the USSR.
  5. Truck cranes and excavators. Similar platform options were widely used in a similar way to other models, especially in construction.
  6. Booth structures. These modifications were used to transport people, as well as various tools in different fields of activity.
  7. Garbage collection models. Their purpose was to load garbage from containers that were located in each yard.

ZIL MMZ 554M But during a difficult economic situation, when a decrease in the production of low-octane brands led to higher prices for gasoline, carburetors were abandoned. Technical characteristics of "Collective Farmer"

It was the high technical characteristics of the ZIL MMZ 554 that became the reason for the high popularity of this model, as well as the number of modifications produced on this basis. They favorably distinguished the car from vehicles produced, for example, by KamAZ. The car was easy to maintain, its spare parts were available for any of the modifications, and the design of the suspension and transmission made it possible to move even on difficult dirt roads.

The ZIL 554 modification became the model that was most common in the USSR. It had a tilting body, as well as excellent technical parameters. Thus, the maximum load capacity of the unit was 9 tons. However, the presence of large traction parameters made it possible to additionally use a trailer with a load of 8 tons. The main technical parameters of the truck are considered:

Engine

This vehicle is equipped with an 8-cylinder gasoline engine manufactured in accordance with the international environmental standard Euro-0.

All cylindrical parts are arranged in a V-shape at an angle of 90°. The minimum diameter of cylindrical elements is 100 mm. The working volume of the power unit is 6 liters. The maximum torque is 401 Nm, and the crankshaft speed is 2600 rpm. The total weight of the power unit is 640 kg.

The operating order of the cylinders is: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. On the right side of the engine there are cylinders numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, and on the left - 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Modifications

Dump truck

The dump truck is equipped with a Perkins 6.345 engine with a power of 140 hp. Diesel is used as the fuel liquid.

The hydraulic system of this model consists of a mechanical pump element, a power take-off shaft and a tank into which fuel is filled with a volume of 17 liters.

The shaft box is equipped with rear-wheel drive and transmits power of 4.5 hp. to the car transmission.

The gearbox has a drive that goes to the rear axle mechanism. It uses a dry, single-plate clutch. The gearbox transmits rated torque to the rear cart through the driveshaft.

The steering design uses a hydraulic power steering along with an intermediate type support mechanism.

Also installed here are batteries with a capacity of 90 Ah and an alternating current generator 32.3701.

Collective farmer

ZIL-554 Kolkhoznik is used in agriculture for transporting various bulk cargoes. The transport is equipped with 3 folding sides for unloading in 3 directions.

The cabin has 3 seats, the seats are sprung, so they can be adjusted in length for comfortable work. The cabin body is made of all-metal alloy. The curved shape of the windshield provides a wide viewing angle. Inside the cabin there is a soundproofing coating and a heating device for comfortable work in winter.

To cool the power unit, a liquid system with a volume of 21 liters is used.

Brake system

This model has a dual-circuit pneumatic braking system with automatic adjustment of the braking forces of the rear axle. Drum brakes are installed on all wheels.

The truck's parking brake is equipped with a mechanical drive located on the rear axle. The drive wheels are locked using energy accumulators.
