Scrap trucks are called trucks (usually with a large carrying capacity), equipped with a clamshell grip on the long “arm” of a manipulator crane, designed for transporting scrap metal.

They have a high, well-reinforced and durable body, since the bursting load on its sides from the loaded scrap metal is very high. And KamAZ is used for this purpose because it has sufficient carrying capacity, which is important for transporting such massive cargo as scrap metal, and, of course, an acceptable price for the Russian market.

Design features of scrap truck

The loader crane is controlled from a canopy cabin, which is installed at the base of the crane, at the very front wall of the body (or, in other words, between the cabin and the body). The crane operator is the driver of the KamAZ scrap truck himself.

The body can have a volume from 12 to 30 m3, depending on the load capacity of a particular machine model. The weight of the transported cargo is thus from 8 to 20 tons.

The hydraulic lift ensures that the body operates like a dump truck, with a lifting angle of about 50⁰.

There is a raised body lock on the subframe, which significantly lightens the load on the structure at the moment of maximum body overturning, and also serves to securely fix the lift during repair and routine maintenance work. The subframe design is a 160-80s pipe, made of O9G2S steel. the walls are connected by crossbars, the wall thickness is 6 mm.

Despite measures to strengthen the body structure, its service life rarely exceeds 1.5-2 years during intensive use.

Since the car is manufactured purely to order for a specific carrier and for specific purposes, its production is limited and may have significant differences from copy to copy. In addition, upon industrial production of a vehicle, in accordance with GOST R 52051-2003, a document called “Vehicle Approval Certificate” is issued.

The delivery of scrap trucks is done with a CMU manufactured in Russia (OMTL-97), Austria (Espilon V100Z97) or Finland (Loglift)

Basic chassis

KamAZ scrap truck (metal carrier) is produced in two modifications: 659004-0052035-24 and 659004-0062035-24, based on the KAMAZ-65115 6x4 chassis. They differ slightly - mainly in the design and location on the chassis of the loader crane. An exception to this series is KamAZ 65201 with an 8x4 wheel arrangement. Its dump platform, with a body capacity of 38 m3, is capable of transporting 25 tons of metal waste. And in the case of using the “road train” mode (with a trailer), the carrying capacity and ability to transport according to the formula “full body + trailer” increases to 76 m3 per transportation.

The installation of attachments on a vehicle in the form of a hydraulic lift and hydraulic control units is not done at the KamAZ enterprise itself, but in affiliated structures called SDM-Karat and Auger-Truck. This division of functions made it possible to concentrate entirely on a specific model for specific tasks, and, at the request of customers, to “attach” additional functions to the ordered scrap trucks.

Types of cranes installed on scrap trucks

  1. OMTL-97. It has a boom reach of 10.4 m and a lifting capacity of the GL 1035 grab of 2.4 tons.
  2. Epsilon V100Z97. The maximum extension length of the boom is 9.7 m. The load capacity of the grab is up to 3 tons.
  3. LOGLIFT. With a boom reach of up to 9.5 meters, the load capacity of the grab is 5 tons.

The manipulator is installed by attaching studs to bushings, which are welded to the side sheets of the frame. This method of installation on the frame ensures the reliability of the structure under any extreme deformation loads, be it torsion, tension, compression, bending, etc.

Body

The sides of the body, taking into account the weight and nature of transportation, have a thickness of up to 4 mm, are made of steel and reinforced with stiffening ribs - special stabilizers that prevent the body from deforming torsion. And also with overlays-brackets that prevent the body from succumbing to the forces of longitudinal and transverse displacement relative to the frame and hydraulic lift. The thickness of the underbody can reach up to 6 mm.

The steel from which the bodies are made is alloyed non-magnetic. This quality can be important if an electromagnetic grip is installed on the CMU (it will not be attracted to the sides of the body).

In the front part of the body there is a small niche where the base of the CMU (manipulator crane) is located. The “grasping” part of the CMU - the grab when transporting cargo and moving - is secured in a special grip at the back of the body, and the CMU boom lies on top of it during transportation. The rear part of the body has a port-sluice with flaps, which is closed during transportation. They open when the body is tipped over using a hydraulic lift.

Hydraulic installation

The hydraulic installation of a scrap truck based on a KamAZ chassis is a GS-80.00.000S1 hydraulic station combined with a 32 kW electric motor, an oil tank with a heater, an oil cooler, an oil pump and a cabinet with control elements. The oil divider reducer ensures that oil is pumped into the oil cylinders of the manipulator boom, which allows it to move in 3 planes (in three-dimensional space) and have three degrees of freedom of movement. An approximate analogue is the shoulder, elbow and wrist joint of the human hand, which for a competent and experienced CMU operator allows for very precise movements with an accuracy of ± 0.5 cm.

The same hydraulic installation also powers the tipper of the dump truck body, with its telescopic hydraulic cylinder.

In extreme operating modes, the installation provides the following characteristics:

  • Load moment – ​​97 kNm;
  • Load capacity at minimum boom reach – 3,070 kg;
  • Load capacity at maximum boom reach – 1,075 kg;
  • Column rotation – 400⁰.

On model 659004-0052035-24, as a rule, a hydraulic pump and hydraulic cylinders from the Italian manufacturer OMFB are installed (in accordance with the component supply agreement).

General characteristics of scrap bodies

Load capacity

The models of metal trucks that are presented in our company are usually equipped with a rectangular body with rear and side hinged parts. The body frame has vertical and horizontal stiffening ribs that are covered with sheet steel. Typically, the sides have a standard thickness of 4 mm, and the floor - 6 mm. This is quite enough for the efficient transportation of cargo weighing from 12 to 16 tons. To load and transport scrap weighing over 18 tons, special equipment with a body side thickness of 5 mm and a floor thickness of 8 mm is usually used.

Sidewalls and floor

There are metal trucks with a body that has an optimized reinforced structure. Such structures have the necessary strength and durability, although they are used mainly in difficult operating conditions. Typically, the vertical ribs have a pitch of 70 cm along the entire perimeter of the working body. The sides are sheathed with a solid vertical sheet profile. The sheets are bent rather than welded in the transition between the sidewall and the floor. In such cases, the welds are located in contact with horizontally laid sheets on the floor, due to which the number of seams is significantly reduced, which increases the strength of the body. Typically, two grades of steel are used for cladding: 10HSND and 09G2S.

This sophisticated design increases strength and preserves the geometry of the body part, which is regularly subjected to high mechanical loads. This also makes it easier to open the sides throughout the entire operation of the special equipment, even in difficult conditions.

The side and rear bodies of the scrap trucks are equipped with swing shutters with a locking mechanism, offset support handrails, a lifting ladder and supports for service and maintenance.

Subframes, side members and lifting hydraulic cylinders

Subframes, on which the body part and hydraulic manipulators are mounted, are the main load-bearing elements of metal trucks. That is why they are subject to stringent requirements, in particular, a high degree of strength and rigidity, which must ensure the safe transfer of high loads to the vehicle frame. These indicators directly affect the service life of special equipment.

Subframes are equipped with box-shaped spars, which are made of bent pipe profile. Such structures around the entire perimeter usually have an internal reinforcement made of low-alloy sheet steel 09G2S 8 mm thick.

In the body niche there are lifting hydraulic cylinders, the use of which makes it possible to move the body towards the driver's cabin. Thanks to this, optimal weight distribution of the KAMAZ metal truck is achieved, resulting in improved vehicle controllability when fully loaded.

Body volume

The body part of metal carriers usually has a volume of 20 to 33 m3. You can increase the capacity of a scrap truck by increasing the height of the sidewalls, but experts do not recommend this. Firstly, the process of loading scrap metal will be difficult, secondly, the center of gravity of the vehicle will change, and thirdly, the stability of the vehicle while driving will be greatly reduced.

In addition, if the scrap truck is overloaded and a hydraulic manipulator is used, its boom will be located on a mountain of metal waste, which can cause a malfunction of the pipeline and hydraulic cylinders.

The dump-type body with reinforced sides inside has dimensions of 5700x2320x2030 mm (LxWxH). The useful volume of the body at maximum load is 27 cubic meters. meters. The opening of the rear body doors is 260⁰. The lifting angle of the body box using a hydraulic cylinder with fixation at the end of the lift is 44⁰.
