How to make a go-kart from a chainsaw

The simplest kart model was built for training novice karting drivers

based on the AKU 89 chassis and URAL chainsaw.

We were prompted to this homemade product by a problem with engines for training, there are practically none, and they break down too often due to the fact that novice karting drivers are not accustomed to high speeds. For this reason, they begin to lose control and for this reason the gearbox and clutch fail.

After all these problems, we decided to build such a machine; there were no problems with altering the chainsaw; we removed all the unnecessary handles with the tank, chain, blade, throttle cable, and rack.

A little more work was required when remaking the sprocket, we took the original sprocket as a basis, then the URAL chainsaws ground off all the teeth, the size was made arbitrary, since there was a lot of metal on it, and the specificity of the size did not play a big role.

We simply bored out the chainsaw sprocket to the resulting size.

The cooling casing was altered; there it was necessary to drill two holes for attaching the engine to the subframe with a diameter of 8 mm along the old holes with a diameter of 6 mm.

The gearbox had to be turned over to the other side.

The next stage was more interesting, since here we had to make a homemade subframe. It is made of sheet steel 3 mm thick, two corners 35 x 35 with a hole D 8.5 mm were welded to it in place for mounting the chainsaw engine. A 35 x 35 square was welded to the other end of the plate in a vertical position to mount the gearbox.

And a nut M 10 x 1.5 for tensioning the chain.

After all these alterations and improvements, a small problem arose with finding a driven sprocket for the rear axle. We were rescued by an old Minsk motorcycle with wheels of a new model, we removed the rear sprocket from it, and it fit into the place of the original sprocket almost like a glove, but the holes did not fit, we had to drill 4 new holes in the hub and during the training, weak points were revealed and the weights began to wear out clutch after 10 – 12 training sessions.

I had to increase the number of teeth on the driven sprocket, and for this I used a driven sprocket from the rear wheel of a Java motorcycle. Having cut off all the excess, I left only the crown. I cut the teeth from the Minsk sprocket to the internal size of the java sprocket and connected everything by welding.

But after assembling the map, shortcomings were revealed; it was necessary to modify the muffler, which released exhaust gases directly onto the seat and, in addition, was too hot.

After the first training session, it turned out that the speed of the car was approximately 70-80 km/h

Engine Installation

You need to remove unnecessary parts from the chainsaw engine (handle, tank, chain). Remaking a sprocket is considered labor-intensive work.

To fix the engine, you need to mount a metal plate to the rear side of the frame by welding. It is necessary to install the power unit on the plate so that its pulley coincides with the axle pulley.   4. To move the assembled ATV from a chainsaw, 4 wheels taken from a walk-behind tractor are suitable;

The finished ATV can be primed and painted to protect it from rust.

Powertrain and steering

If you could only get the motor from a chainsaw, then you can use it to make a drive with one gear. This is not very convenient because there is no way to adjust the drive/driver ratio, so the wheel torque will be the same during acceleration and during constant movement. If you were able to get a scooter’s power drive, a motor from the old Soviet “Ant” scooter or its analogues, then you can use its gearbox to increase torque during acceleration. To do this, you will have to install the clutch pedal and gear selector lever. For the scooter's power drive, these operations are not needed because it uses a variable speed drive.

Chainsaw kart - assembly features

To assemble this homemade product, you will need to remove the handles, fuel tank, cutting parts, gear rack and built-in cable connecting the gas handle and the engine from the chainsaw used on the farm.

In the future, the operator will have to:

  1. Remake the standard chainsaw sprocket. To do this, it is necessary to carefully grind off all its teeth to arbitrary sizes, since the outer diameter of the part does not play a big role. A pre-ground Minsk star will need to be welded to the resulting workpiece;
  2. Organize a place to mount the power unit on the subframe. To do this, it is necessary to drill 2 small holes in the cooling casing, the diameter of each of which should be approximately 8 mm. They need to be drilled into standard holes, each with an initial diameter of 6 mm;
  3. Assemble a strong subframe that is as vibration-resistant as possible. To construct it, a 3-mm sheet of steel is suitable, to which you need to weld 2 corners with dimensions of 35 × 35 mm. In the corners you need to pre-drill holes with an exact diameter of 8.5 mm - they will be needed to permanently fix the power unit from the chainsaw. In the opposite part of the steel plate, it is necessary to vertically weld a metal corner with dimensions of 35x35 mm - it will be necessary for installing the gearbox used. In addition, you will need to install a 10×1.5 mm M nut on the plate to tension the chain;
  4. To install the gearbox, you will need to turn it over to the other side;
  5. Weld the guides to the back of the steel plate. They can be made in advance from halves of metal pipes measuring 30x2 mm;
  6. Install a steel plate with parts welded to it on the chassis taken from an old AKU 89 go-kart;
  7. Equip a homemade chainsaw with a seat, steering wheel and brake system. If during the assembly process it turns out that the muffler from the internal combustion engine is directed towards the driver, then it will need to be moved to the side, or extended using a piece of metal pipe.

Preparation

To make a go-kart you will need various materials. Karting is a means of transport that covers a long distance in a short time. Karting can participate in competitions, it can be driven on uneven roads, in rural areas, where large equipment cannot pass. The preparatory stage begins with creating a diagram of the future structure.

A drawing of the karting should be drawn up taking into account the dimensions, which should correspond to the height of the person. For teenagers, the device can be made to individual specifications. After choosing the sizes, you need to assemble the main base. To make a karting structure, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • chainsaw;
  • square pipes 10 m long;
  • round steel pipes;
  • durable steel plate;
  • gearbox from an old car;
  • bottom plugging equipment;
  • driver's seat from a kart or passenger car.
