Device and design
All snow blowers for walk-behind tractors are conventionally divided into types:
- Screw. This type of snow blower is considered single-stage, which means that the snow mass moves from the conveyor directly into the blowing mouth, from where the snow is thrown out under the influence of a strong air jet.
- Rotary. These models combine the functions of both a rotor and an auger: using a special rotating screw, snow is fed into a wide mouth with a large rotor. Due to torque, the rotating rotor transfers part of its energy in the form of additional speed to the movement of the snow mass.
- Rotary snow blowers are capable of creating a powerful stream of snow and throwing it more than 20 m.
How to make a snow blower from a walk-behind tractor
Before you take on the task of making a snow blower yourself, you need to sensibly evaluate your skills, since the task will require effort. The most common homemade product is based on the Neva and Honda walk-behind tractor. The nozzle can be made in three versions:
- The attachment, like that of a bulldozer, is attached to the walk-behind tractor using a special adapter. The layer of snow is cut off with a knife - a metal sheet with a sharp edge.
- There is a more complex method that requires a drawing. The design is a rotary nozzle consisting of a box, an auger and a pipe that throws out snow. This is the most efficient two-stage system.
- Another difficult way is to make a fan snow blower. If you have the necessary skills and time, a fan is made, the blades of which scoop up the snow and throw it through the pipe.
You can make a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor from scrap materials. To make a snow shovel for a walk-behind tractor, you need the following tools: tape measure, drill, grinder, welding machine. You will need an unnecessary pipe with a large diameter or a barrel.
Homemade snow blower
Cut out a blade of the required depth from 2 halves of the barrel; you can use a curved sheet of metal with a thickness of 2 mm. They weld the rigid frame and make internal racks to ensure rigidity. A steel semicircle with three holes is welded to adjust the direction of rotation. The attachment to the walk-behind tractor is made of a rod and brackets, the holder is fixed in the center of the blade.
Note! If you plan to make a more complex version, then the whole difficulty lies in making a screw located inside the box.
You can take an old auger from some equipment. The auger is made from a pipe, with holders on the sides. The working part is made of metal blades of the same size, between which equal spaces are left.
To make a screw auger, 8 large and 4 slightly smaller disks are cut out of metal sheets. They are put on the shaft. It is necessary to monitor the rigidity of fastening of structural parts, counting on intensive use. The rotor is made from an aluminum boiler with a volume of 20 liters. For fixation on the front wall of the auger, rivets (4 mm) are used.
A snow thrower in the form of a pipe with a socket is welded in the central upper part of the box. The work is carried out using the rotating shaft of a motor cultivator. To transmit torque, adapters are required, for example, a flexible belt coupling (A-100 belt).
The purchase of mounted snow removal equipment makes the walk-behind tractor a universal assistant in the household. It is better to purchase in specialized stores with guaranteed product quality.

Principle of operation
The design of a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor is a huge shovel-bucket, which, moving in a given direction, captures the snow mass and transfers it in a thin stream to a screw conveyor (auger). This mechanism consists of a pair of screws made of narrow strips with many sharp teeth along the edges.
This design makes it possible to connect sections of the auger, and therefore significantly increase the working width.
The screw pair rotates towards the center , where the snow flows. The powerful blades spin with such force that they can crush even thick pieces of compressed snow into small pieces. The screws work in such a way that the snow moves very slowly through the mechanism.
This is necessary to ensure uninterrupted operation of the throwing channel.
User manual
When working with mounted snow removal equipment, as well as with individual snow blowers, such as Husqvarna, forte qi jy 50, cmi 163, snow fox sf16353l, lux 163, Champion 656, Patriot, Honda, Foreman, it is very important to select the desired speed of movement and install it correctly.
Many models of manual snow removal equipment have only one speed of movement, this is due to the fact that with such a transmission device, the process of picking up and throwing out snow is more efficient, because a strictly limited volume of snow mass gets into the gripper.
If there is a gearbox in the design, the operator has a choice, but it is considered optimal to travel at a speed of 4 km per hour , and if your machine is more powerful - 7 km/h. The main criterion for choosing speed is the possibility of free, continuous operation of the conveyor with the rotor.
Before starting work, read the instructions supplied with the snow blower. Pay special attention to the maximum thickness of snow cover that the bucket of your chosen model is designed for. Most often, attachments are designed for snow drift thickness not exceeding 20 centimeters.

How to assemble a snow blower
Sequence of assembling a snow blower with your own hands:
Assembly
- First, take a box of iron sheets, the ends of which are bent like skis. To make a shaft, you need to get a pipe with a thickness of at least 5 cm. A grip made of two welded bent plates in a U-shape is welded into the box. Both plates must be rotated 180 degrees relative to each other.
- You can make the auger yourself using a conveyor belt (1.5 m long and 10 mm thick). It is possible to cut 4 rings from the tape using a jigsaw (28cm in diameter). If such a device is not available, it can be replaced with a special board, which is used like a compass (rotating in a circle). This manufacturing method produces high-quality rings.
- You need to make a hole in a casing made of galvanized iron, and then install a pipe in it, which will serve as a snow discharge. Holders are welded to it on both sides of the spreader.
- A gear or pulley must be installed on the auger drive shaft (the choice depends on the drive). The rings on one side are cut and welded to the beginning of the other end. One side of the workpiece is welded to the gripping blade, and the second end, reinforced with a strip of steel, is welded to the shaft at a distance of 5-10 cm from the free end.
- Next you need to prepare the auger drive. It can be either chain or belt. A belt drive should be used when the engine has a pulley, and if the auger jams during operation, the belt will slip safely. The grip body should be 2-3 centimeters larger than the pulley. In this case, the pulley will not cling to the housing, and a gap will remain between them.
- To protect the auger from damage, it must be equipped with a spare pin that breaks off if the auger jams. A round hole is made behind the grip, into which a bent pipe of the required caliber is inserted and welded.
- After carrying out all the work, you need to carefully check that the distance between the gripper blades and the rear wall of the box is minimal.
- Glasses should be secured to the sides of the box. It is better to create glasses from AMGB aluminum and attach them to the car using Mb bolts (be sure to tighten them with nuts). The shaft rotates in bearings located in the cups. It should look out of the box at a distance of 5-10 cm.
- The rotary gutter can be made from a sewer pipe (160 mm in diameter). A gutter is attached to this pipe, giving the snow direction. The diameter of the chute must be greater than the width of the auger plate, which is responsible for throwing out the snow mass.
- A sprocket is welded at the end of the shaft to change speeds. The sprocket and shaft are connected to the walk-behind tractor using a chain.
- The rotor is connected to the front wall of the housing using rivets with a diameter of 4 mm. If skis are installed on the unit, then you can attach wooden blocks under them or screw strips of plastic.
- Make a frame from steel corners (50*50 cm). Corners measuring 25*25 mm are attached to the transversely installed corners. The power unit is mounted on them.
- The machine handle is bolted to the longitudinal angles.

After assembly is completed, the walk-behind snow blower can be spray painted.
In addition to the main technical parameters and characteristics that affect the quality and performance of snow blowers, you should consider some additional devices that can make the operator’s work more comfortable. The standard equipment of snow removal equipment models can be supplemented with a number of additional functions, for example, a heated machine handle system, an electric starter, a headlight for operation at night, etc.
Note! Please follow safety precautions when using this device. In conclusion, it should be noted that the snow blower makes it possible to adjust the direction of snow ejection using the rotation of the screen, but the adjustment of the snow ejection range is carried out by rotating the device’s motor

Useful information about the snow blower
Operating a walk-behind tractor with a snow blower attachment will not be difficult , but do not forget to follow all safety precautions.
The latest modified attachments are relatively light in weight and easy to operate, so take this into account and try to clear snow in a lower gear.
This way you will ensure control over the operation of the machine and can easily direct the machine in the right direction. When working, watch the direction of snow ejection , make sure there are no fragile objects or glass windows nearby.
By choosing a device with a powerful bucket, you can easily cope with even dense snow, and the reliable and durable shaft will remain unharmed even if stones accidentally hit you.
The most popular modification is the self-propelled gasoline snow blower, which attracted buyers with its affordable price.
Adviсe:
- Before starting work, make sure that all threaded connections are securely fastened.
- Check chain tension every 6 hours of operation. The permissible deviation from the norm is from 10 to 15 mm.
- When using the snow blower for the first time, run for 30 minutes. After turning off the engine, check the tightness of the fastening.

What is a snow removal attachment for a walk-behind tractor?
A universal device for removing snow mass over large areas is called a snow blower. The design is created in such a way as to collect, sweep and throw away snow. The main function of the snow removal attachment is to automate manual labor and save time. Snow blower features:
- works in tandem with a walk-behind tractor;
- attached to the front;
- easy to maintain.
Nozzle for snow removal
The body of the nozzle is made of metal, less often – plastic. Inside the box there is a shaft on which steel blades of complex shape are attached. The shaft rotates due to bearings installed in it. Disc knives are welded onto the shaft in a spiral. They consist of two halves, which converge in turns towards the central part.
When the shaft moves, the snow cover is captured by the blades and directed to the center. A thin stream transfers snow to a screw conveyor (auger). The snow and ice mass, moving along the augers, is destroyed and falls on the rotor blades. After this, being sucked in by a fan, it is thrown out through the outlet pipe (sleeve) in a given direction and at a certain distance.
Snow blower device
A mounted auger snow blower has a metal body with a shaft inside. The shaft has auger blades made of steel sheet of complex shape. The shaft is mounted in bearings, which allows it to rotate.
The rotor is visible inside. Above the rotor there is a rotary pipe. It can be turned in any direction. To attach an auger snow blower, there is a hitch, inside of which the power take-off shaft (PTO) of the walk-behind tractor is located.
Torque is transmitted to actuators. When the auger shaft rotates and moves forward, snow is captured by the blades and moves from the periphery to its center. The snow mass, moving along the augers, is destroyed, its structure changes, so it will be easy to throw it to the side.
From the auger picking mechanism, snow flows onto the rotor blades. Here its translational movement is converted into rotational movement. It receives tangential acceleration and is thrown out through the pipe in a given direction: to the right or to the left in the direction of movement of the snow blower. Here the operator directs the deflector so that the removed snow does not interfere with the work.
Types of nozzles for snow removal
All commercially available attachments for walk-behind tractors can be divided according to the method of attachment, shape, and principle of operation. Depending on the design of the walk-behind tractor, the methods for attaching the attachment can be as follows:
- through the power take-off shaft (PTO);
- through a homemade or industrially manufactured hitch;
- belt drive;
- using an adapter and hitch;
- through the track attachment.
Types of attachments for snow removal
Based on the principle of operation, attachments are divided into the following forms:
- Plow blade (snow blade) - for clearing snow drifts. The design is a scraper bucket with a pointed lower edge. The knife (pointed bottom) is set at a certain angle and lowered. When moving, snow masses are directed into the bucket, and part of the snow is shifted to the side of the road, which does not interfere with the movement of equipment.
- Utility brushes – for removing freshly fallen snow, for collecting dust, sand and leaves. The pile is made of polypropylene or metal. Before starting work, the angle of inclination of the brush and pressure are set. When rotating, the design brushes away snow, ensuring gentle cleaning of the surface.
- Rotary auger attachment (snow rotor) – copes with compacted or freshly fallen snow, ice, and crust. The rotor spins, the blades capture the snow cover and transfer it to the impeller. Rotating at high speeds, the impeller crushes snow, ice and clods, after which the snow is thrown out through a special pipe in a certain direction.
According to the design type, a walk-behind tractor for snow removal can be:
- rotary;
- screw (single-stage);
- mixed type.
Classification of walk-behind snow blowers
Snow removal from large areas is carried out using specialized municipal equipment. But in the tight space there is no room for large machines: tractors (MTZ) and snow blowers (Honda). The problem is solved by using a walk-behind tractor equipped with snow removal attachments.
Snow removal walk-behind tractor
A walk-behind tractor is a universal machine for agriculture, equipped with a mounted auger-rotor mechanism. The principle of operation is to collect snow mass, pass it through a special impeller and throw it to the side. The equipment is designed for cleaning small areas with loose snow. To remove snow in a short time and with maximum efficiency, special snow removal devices have been developed.
Note! Any walk-behind tractor can be adapted for snow removal; you just need to attach attachments. Its performance depends on the power of the unit. The engine of a low-power walk-behind tractor will be overloaded when cleaning dense crust. Fuel selection is also important for use at low temperatures.
Types of snow blowers for walk-behind tractors:
- bulldozer - operates using a blade attachment;
- screw (single-stage);
- screw-rotor (combined, two-stage).
There are 3 types of snow removal attachments:
- shovel blade;
- brush;
- screw-rotor attachment.
Installation and operating rules
Before installing the snow blower on the walk-behind tractor, you must read the factory instructions. When operating, select the speed of movement, observe the adjustments of the guide visor so that the flying mass does not harm passers-by and the windows of buildings.
Before clearing snow, the attachments are attached to a special trailer unit on the frame of the traction unit. Algorithm of actions:
- If the trailer unit is made in the form of a bracket, you need to remove the pin, attach the attachment and insert it back. Secure the structure with bolts.
- Remove the pulley protection on the PTO. Use a V-belt to connect the PTO pulley and the pulley on the snow removal attachment. Create the required tension using the adjusting mechanism.
- Put on the protective cover and manually check that there is no friction by turning the mechanism.
- You can start working. Do not forget to periodically check the reliability of the coupling, since the safety of the person himself, as well as the performance of the unit, depends on this.
How to choose a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor
Before you buy a unit, you need to decide for what purpose it will be used (only in winter or in other seasons), what area it will have to be cleaned and how often it will be used. Please pay attention to the following parameters:
- Working width. For your own needs, 50–70 cm is enough, depending on the width of the path that will be cleaned.
- Height of snow removed. The standard height for most machines averages about 0.5 m.
- Release range. Depends on the snow (packed or fresh), the direction and strength of the wind, and the angle of the visor.
- Weight. The more the snow blower weighs, the better the grip and the likelihood of no slipping. On the other hand, it is more difficult to manage.
- Working speed. The optimal value is 2–4 km/h.
- Compatibility with walk-behind tractors - use of the design with different models. Alternatively, you can use special adapters.
- Dimensions (length, depth, height). The larger the snow blower attachment, the more snow it can handle in one go.
- Additional accessories and equipment, for example, a set of blades, a spare belt.

The principle of working with a snow plow for a walk-behind tractor
The mouldboard shovel of a walk-behind tractor must be installed correctly before performing its functions. She turns with her hands to the right or to the left at an angle of up to 30°. The process of adjusting the position ends with setting a suitable angle and fixing the shovel in the chosen location using cotter pins. The gripping area of a snow plow for a mobile power unit is usually one meter (individual modifications may have other values) with a shovel material thickness of 2 to 3 mm. In industrial conditions, these devices are made from high quality steel.

Varieties
One of the trailed equipment options for this motorcycle is snowblowers. The manufacturer has developed several modifications of snow throwers. All samples of devices for removing snow masses for the Neva walk-behind tractor are auger structures with snow masses ejected from the side (side discharge). The most popular types of this trailed equipment are several modifications.
"MB2"
Many people believe that this is what snow blowers are called. In fact, “MB2” is a brand of walk-behind tractor. The snow blower is used as an attachment. “MB2” is suitable for other “Neva” motorcycles. The structure of the compact nozzle is elementary. The body of the iron body contains a screw conveyor. Welded spiral strips are used as knives. The snow mass is ejected to the side using a hose (snow outlet). The scope of capture of the snow layer is 70 centimeters with a thickness of 20 centimeters. The ejection distance is 8 meters. The weight of the device is no more than 55 kilograms.
"SM-0.6"
It differs from “MB2” in the design of the screw conveyor. Here it is made in the form of a set of blades, similar to fan wheels collected in a pile. The gear screw conveyor handles hard snow cover and ice crust without much effort. This unit is smaller in size than the MB2 brand, but this does not make its productivity any less.
The snow mass is also released by means of a snow drain to the side at a distance of up to 5 meters. The sweep of the snow layer is 56 centimeters, and its maximum thickness is 17 centimeters. The weight of the device is at most 55 kilograms. When working with a snow blower, the Neva unit moves at a speed of 2-4 km/h.
"SMB-1" and "SMB-1M"
These snow clearing sheds differ in the structure of the working device. The SMB-1 brand is equipped with a screw conveyor with a spiral strip. The grip span is 70 centimeters, the height of the snow cover is 20 centimeters. The snow mass is thrown through a snow chute at a distance of 5 meters. The weight of the device is 60 kilograms.
The SMB-1M nozzle is equipped with a gear screw conveyor. The grip span is 66 centimeters and the height is 25 centimeters. The snow mass is also thrown out through the hose at a distance of 5 meters. Equipment weight – 42 kilograms.
What is better: a snow blower or a walk-behind snowblower?
The Russian winter is so unpredictable that cases when a huge layer of snow lies on the ground in the morning no longer seems rare. Any car owner immediately involuntarily begins to doubt whether the car will get stuck in it, and the villager is in a hurry to clear the paths so that they can get into the most important outbuildings. In this regard, many owners of private houses (not to mention public utilities) are increasingly following the example of their foreign “colleagues” and purchasing various snow removal equipment.
The most popular among buyers are snow blowers (also called snow throwers) and snow-removing walk-behind tractors. But which unit is better? Experienced representatives of the specialized online store “Garden Mechanisms” will help us answer this question.
Types of cars
You should start by getting acquainted with the mentioned units.
Snow blowers
A snow blower is a highly specialized type of gardening equipment designed exclusively for clearing snow from an area.
The entire mass of these units can be divided into:
- non-self-propelled - you need to push in front of you, holding the handle; - self-propelled - they drive themselves, you only need to steer using two separate handles.
The latter, in turn, are divided into two more types:
- wheeled - more compact, lighter and maneuverable, - tracked - powerful and highly productive.
At the same time, small non-self-propelled units are sometimes equipped with an electric motor, that is, they require connection to an outlet. Self-propelled vehicles weigh more and for efficient operation would require a connection to an electrical network with a power of at least 5 kW, so they are equipped with a gasoline engine.
The operating principle of all devices is almost the same. You can better understand it by familiarizing yourself with the design of the cleaning system. It can be one- or two-stage.
In the first case, inside the bucket located in front of the machine, a spiral knife - an auger - is driven by a motor. While moving, it crushes the snow entering the bucket and pushes it into the chute, through which the crushed snow mass is released. The chute itself is a metal or plastic pipe located at an angle, which can be used to regulate the direction and distance of the ejection.
The two-stage system differs only in the presence of an additional fan located between the auger and the chute. Due to it, the ejection range greatly increases, which makes cleaning large areas much more convenient.
Electric non-self-propelled units, characterized by low power, are equipped with a single-stage snow removal system. More serious gasoline-powered self-propelled snow blowers always have a two-stage system.
As for the chassis, each option has both its pros and cons. The wheels provide greater maneuverability, but often slip as soon as you get on ice or hit an uneven surface. Caterpillars provide greater cross-country ability (you can even clear ice skating rinks), but significantly reduce maneuverability and cleaning speed. At the same time, tracked devices always have more power, which allows them to cope with a larger and denser layer of snow.
Start of assembly
To make your own snow blower, you first need to select the type of device. It is quite possible to get by with a single-stage model if the area is small. For larger sizes it is better to use a two-stage model.
You should also be aware of weather conditions. If the snowfalls are heavy and heavy, then you simply cannot do without a rotary auger snow blower. When there is very little snow in winter, you can make the most primitive apparatus.
Motor selection
Electric drives are usually used when the device will operate close to an outlet. You can use the engine from a chainsaw or trimmer. Home craftsmen often make a snow blower from a trimmer with their own hands.
Electric snow blowers are more economical and also easier to operate. But it is worth noting that in maneuverability they are inferior to the gasoline unit. The gasoline engine is considered more versatile, but the price for refueling and maintenance will be much higher than the previous option.
That is why the choice will depend on specific conditions, as well as the tasks that will need to be performed using the device. You need to know when choosing an electric snow blower that the wire at sub-zero temperatures will become very brittle and lose its elasticity, so you also need to choose a good cord that will withstand low temperatures.
Engine or walk-behind tractor
When a walk-behind tractor is used as the basis for an electric snow blower, you don’t have to worry about choosing an engine. The unit itself will cope with this role. If a gasoline engine is installed in the car, then you need to use models with internal combustion. They can be pulled out of the lawnmower.
The entire structure will need to be secured to a quick-assembly platform to facilitate maintenance and repair should the need arise. It is also advisable to manually start the engine to reduce weight and increase maneuverability.
The snow blower can also be built on an electric motor. In this case, you need to know that this option will limit the operating radius of the device. Such a drive is afraid of moisture, and therefore you will have to install high-quality waterproofing so that the engine is not damaged.
Selection and operating conditions of a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor
Modern attachments for walk-behind tractors, which can be found in a wide range on the domestic market today, make it possible to carry out many production processes quickly and efficiently.
In winter, a lot of problems arise due to heavy snowfall, which often makes it impossible for vehicles to walk or drive normally. An excellent solution in terms of high-quality snow removal on the territory can be a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor, which almost every person has the opportunity to purchase.
What are the main advantages of such a mechanical device?
Thanks to its versatility, a good walk-behind snow blower is able to cope with a variety of tasks, not limited solely to the local area. Many models of powerful and wide snow blowers are capable of excellent cleaning even of very large areas - parks, squares, jogging and bicycle paths. As a result, snow blowers are also widely used not only by farmers and ordinary private owners, but also by households.
Wide selection of domestic and foreign models
Each of our compatriots will find on the market today mounted snow blowers for such popular walk-behind tractors as Neva, Salyut, Ural, Krot, Cascade, as well as foreign models SunGarden, BCS, Grillo and so on.
When choosing a suitable unit, you should carefully look at its technical characteristics, as well as the tasks assigned to it. After all, it is simply irrational to take a very expensive and too powerful snow blower for an ordinary local area.
A model with low power is also suitable here and will also cope well with the task.

- the width of the cleaning comb is about 65 cm;
- snow is thrown out at the bottom of the funnel at a distance of up to 9 meters;
- for better adhesion to the surface, the device can be additionally equipped with lugs;
- when operating at extremely low temperatures (below -20°C), it is necessary to use synthetic oil;
- The rotation angle of the snowplow is usually about 90° from the direction of movement of the walk-behind tractor itself.
Working with a snow blower is not at all difficult, but to do this you need to remember to follow safety precautions. A modern snow plow walk-behind tractor is lightweight and quite easy to operate. The slow stroke allows you to hold it securely in your hands, gradually directing it in the desired direction. The only thing you need to remember is the strong stream of snow thrown out from under the auger, and therefore keep your distance from fragile glass and windows of the house.
With the help of a good and practical snow blower, you can quickly remove not only loose, but also compacted, dense snow, but for this you should choose attachments with powerful ridges. The durable shaft mechanism with sharp blades is sometimes not afraid of even accidental ingress of stones and debris, as a result of which it can be used even on uneven terrain. At the same time, the most popular modification for ordinary private households remains an auger-type snow blower, the price of which is quite reasonable and affordable for many.
Useful tips for using a snow blower
We advise you to adhere to the following recommendations:
- Before each use of the device, it is advisable to check the reliability of the tightening of threaded connections, as well as the tension of the V-belt;
- after every 6 hours of operation, adjust the chain tension, the deflection of which should be within 10÷15 mm;
- 30 minutes after operating the new snow blower, you need to turn off the engine and check the tightness of the snow blower fasteners.
A modern snow blower for a walk-behind tractor can be purchased both at specialized centers selling attachments for walk-behind tractors and through online stores. Some craftsmen prefer to make such systems with their own hands, which also has its undeniable advantages. Having skills in working with metalworking and welding tools, each of our compatriots, if desired and patient, can make such a mounted unit independently.
