Features and pitfalls of replacing the engine and other spare parts for the MTZ walk-behind tractor

No machine can work forever without breakdowns and replacement of spare parts - this is an axiom that does not require proof. Belarusian MTZ walk-behind tractors are also subject to this rule, despite all their strength and endurance. The problem is that the necessary spare parts for the MTZ walk-behind tractor are not always available, but now Belarus is a different state. In addition, the 05th MTZ has been out of production for a quarter of a century, so finding its “original” spare parts is problematic, unless you buy another walk-behind tractor of this model and use it for spare parts.

Which Engine to Put on the Mtz Motoblock

There are not many parts included in the walk-behind tractor. Any one of them carries a certain load and its absence negates the entire concept - walk-behind tractor .
The engine, like all cars, takes pride of place in the walk-behind tractor. Using the energy of combustible fuel, internal components and mechanisms are set in motion for our client. Thus, fuel entering the combustion chamber is ignited with the help of a candle. The fuel, when burned, is converted into gas, which presses on the piston. The latter is connected to a crankshaft, which supplies torque to external mechanisms. Fuel supply and synchronization are carried out by valves, of which you will prefer several for each cylinder.

The acquired torque in the walk-behind tractor is used for two purposes. One of them is the rotation of the wheels and the movement of the entire unit. The other forces the rotating parts of attached equipment to work. Here, energy transfer is carried out due to the gearbox and power take-off shaft.

Requirements are put forward for walk-behind tractor engines, which must ensure clear, reliable functionality of the entire unit. It is necessary to be: small-sized, economical, lightweight, relatively strong and have a long service life. Because they are created for personal use, the cost is also important.

Compact single-cylinder four-stroke gasoline and diesel engines meet these requirements. Their power ranges from 5 to 15 hp. pp., which fully satisfies the ability of 1 person to control and work with a walk-behind tractor.

There are constant debates surrounding the introduction of any motor on walk-behind tractors. Both units have their pros and cons. Carburetor engines have an air cooling system, which allows them to gain somewhat in terms of difficulty and size. Liquid cooling is often used in diesel units.

Engine

internal combustion engines have the smallest size and weight, which significantly surpasses diesel ones. To start them, you don’t need any special wisdom, and the start itself is done virtually simultaneously. Another advantage of the gasoline unit is the relatively low noise. These properties begin to fade when it comes to fuel consumption. In comparison, a regular diesel engine with a power of 9 hp. With. burns 0.9 liters in one hour of operation in medium mode. Gasoline engine, which in most cases is found on Russian walk-behind tractors of 5 liters. pp., consuming twice as much at the same load is not easy. Even when diesel fuel is almost equal to gasoline in monetary terms, diesel engines remain much more economical.

Diesel power units remain more reliable from a technical point of view, but they are not capable of developing such speeds as gasoline ones.

This rumored debate can continue endlessly and there will still be fans of both units who will say that they have found a balanced option.

Over the entire period of production of walk-behind tractors, the Minsk Tractor Plant has mastered a whole line of devices for this purpose. This included MTZ with markings: 05, 06, 08 and 12. Later, Belarus was added here - 09N. The numbers characterize the power of the units in horsepower (0 is not taken into account).

One of the engines for Russian walk-behind tractors was the UD-2, which was created in Ulyanovsk. This is a four-stroke gasoline engine with 2 cylinders. The total volume is 0.6 cubic meters. cm and power 8 l. With. The engine develops 3000 rpm. Dry weight is 72 kg.

The subsequent model is UD-4. This engine has 4 cylinders and a total volume of 1220 cc. see its feature - lower placement of valves.

In contrast to the previous model, UD-25 contains two cylinders. The working volume reached 490 cubic meters. cm, which made it possible to increase power to 8–10 hp. With. The unit weighs 52 kg.

MTZ-09N walk-behind tractors are equipped with foreign-made gasoline units. This is the Honda GX270, its Chinese counterpart is the Lifan LF177 and Kipor KG270. The Japanese engine runs on gasoline. Has 1 cylinder. Working volume – 269 cubic meters. cm, which allows you to get 9 liters. With. power.

Description

The production of Belarus walk-behind tractors began in 1978 with the MTZ-05 model. Since then, interest in these units has not waned, because their main advantage is reliability and excellent technical characteristics. The ability to be aggregated with any type of attachment makes MTZ walk-behind tractors even more functional and in demand in small and medium-sized agriculture. Some of the hitch requires some work, but the owners do not consider this a problem.

Motoblock MTZ-05

Attractive in appearance and simple inside, the MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor is still in use today and is popular in the secondary market.

Below is a diagram that clearly demonstrates the structure of the walk-behind tractor and the location of all components

Before you begin repairing any unit or part, you must familiarize yourself with the presented diagram. This will help not only to understand where the necessary mechanisms are located, but also to establish the relationship between them. Refinement of the walk-behind tractor and its repair will be carried out much faster and more efficiently.

Engine

Early models were equipped with domestically produced engines UD-15 and UD-25. But as the device improved and new models were released, walk-behind tractors with a Japanese-made Honda engine installed on them became widespread. They were distinguished by increased service life and operational reliability.

Engine UD 15 Engine UD 25

However, the cost of such units was also high, therefore, in order to reduce the cost of products, motors from the Chinese manufacturer Lifan began to be installed in production. The quality was slightly inferior to the Japanese Honda, but in general, they were considered an excellent alternative. Many owners decided to modernize their unit and did not regret it. It is safe to say that the use of imported motors will only improve the performance of the unit.

The problems and solutions described below were made based on feedback from owners.

Difficulty starting the engine

Typically, this problem arose for the following reasons:

Crankshaft does not function or turns slowly

The engine has started, but the starter does not turn off

If such a problem occurs, the starter requires repair. Possible causes include jamming of the starter drive or failure of the relay armature.

Intermittent operation of the MTZ walk-behind tractor

There may be malfunctions in the functioning of the ignition system, therefore, first of all, it is necessary to check the spark plugs or replace them. It is also possible that dirt can get into the carburetor, which can cause instability.

User manual

Now the MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor is not produced, but is still widely used in agriculture. And the question regarding the operating instructions is acute, since it is almost impossible to find it in paper form.

From us you can download it from the following link Operating instructions for the MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor

Basic operating rules

  • If you purchased a new MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor that has not been in use before, be sure to run it in. It involves Belarus working in a gentle manner so that the parts get used to each other and begin to work stably.
  • It is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of walk-behind tractor parts: transmission, running joints, steering wheel. After work, the remaining soil and other foreign objects should be removed. Protect MTZ-05 from precipitation.
  • It is necessary to periodically lubricate all systems of the walk-behind tractor with oil: crankcase, air filters, crankshaft journal, magneto breaker lever axis. In winter, it is recommended to use oil M-8G2 or M-8B2, and in summer M-10G2 or M-10B2. The axes of the control levers should be lubricated with conventional lubricants Litol-24 or Solidol. All oils must be manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the relevant GOSTs, since in Soviet times there were uniform requirements for everyone.
  • After you have turned on the Belarusian, you must smoothly raise the starting pedal; operating the engine with the pedal in the lower position is not allowed.
  • You should switch to reverse and back only after Belarus-05 has been completely stopped. Otherwise, the gears will break.
  • When driving in reverse, you should hold the control rod firmly in your hands and turn smoothly.
  • If you are not using the power take-off shaft, it should be turned off.
  • When aggregating attachments, the kingpin must be securely installed up to the pin in the hitch. It is strictly forbidden to work with an unsecured kingpin.

Engine

MTZ Belarus 05, compared to the latest new products of this brand, has an engine of the UD-15 model. It is a carburetor, four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine and has a simple design. This engine runs exclusively on gasoline. A positive feature of such a unit is that parts for repairs are very easy to obtain. If any problems arise, replacing the problematic element will not be difficult.

This engine was designed on the basis of the MEMZ-966, which was installed in the Zaporozhets car, and its main drawback was difficult starting.

The power unit is attached to the clutch. The engine is started using a kick starter, which is located on the right side of the crankcase. At the bottom of the motor there is a parking support with a spring. On the right side of the engine there is a pipe for exhaust gases.

Technical parameters of the power plant

This power plant (“UD-15”) is characterized by a working volume of 0.245 liters and a rated power of 4.9 hp. (3.7 kW). The rotation speed is at the level of 3 thousand revolutions per minute. Some varieties of walk-behind tractor have a two-cylinder UD-25 engine with an overhead valve gas distribution mechanism.

Increasing the speed of Belarus

To get maximum efficiency from the purchased MTZ walk-behind tractor, many owners are interested in the possibility of increasing the speed of the unit. Experts recommend replacing the standard gears with accelerated gears. The difference is in the number of teeth. A regular gear has 61 teeth, and the axle shaft has 12. The accelerated gear is slightly different and has 55 teeth, and the axle shaft has 15.

The principle of operation is to increase the speed of rotational movements of the axle shaft, and, consequently, the entire unit as a whole. Moreover, the engine speed does not change. For example, in 4th gear after replacement, the speed will increase from 9 km/h to 15 km/h.

One simple but effective way to increase the speed of the MTZ walk-behind tractor is to replace the wheels with larger diameter ones. The explanation is simple - the increased wheel area covers a larger area.

Owner reviews

Temra:

“I transported a huge amount of everything on my MTZ-05. Starting from garbage and ending with 3.5 meter logs for the construction of a bathhouse. I loaded a little more than 0.5 cubic meters of raw wood. In terms of cross-country ability, it is like an all-terrain vehicle, given its weight, but in winter the situation is worse. The UD-15 engine is lighter, so you will have to load more on the front in order to somehow press the walk-behind tractor itself to the ground. His speed is low. Mine has 6-7 km/h due to the large wheels. Now I am actively working with the following attachments: a plow, a harrow, a hiller and a milling machine, and, of course, a cart.”

Nikolay:

“Well, I finally got acquainted with this technique. I took all the grass out of the garden; the days are nice and warm. The impressions are generally positive. I drove it into the garden, it goes without falling through. Locking the wheels helps a lot. The trailer was not overloaded too much to get out of the garden. I drove for three hours, the garden is 30 acres, the summer is rainy, there is a lot of grass. It took 2.5 liters of gasoline. I filled up with 5 liters, almost half the tank remained. There were some first breakdowns - I replaced the spark plug, installed A11, there was A20, the clutch cable broke, secured it with a bolt and nut. As for speed, in 4th gear the walk-behind tractor reaches 10 km/h. The speeds turn on normally, you just need to get used to it. One problem has already been solved. Based on first impressions, I think the walk-behind tractor is worth the money, even if it is 20 years old. In our village there are homemade ones running around, they have gearboxes from the 60s, they can’t be demolished.”

Adjusting the carburetor to 16 fuel level. Diagram and principle of operation of the K-16A carburetor

The K-16A or K-16 carburetor (see Fig. 10.7) is installed on P-10U starting engines intended for starting tractor diesel engines. It consists of a float chamber 1, nozzles 11 and 18, a diffuser 22, a throttle and air damper 15 and 18. Fuel flows by gravity from the tank through a pipeline through fittings, a strainer 4 and a shut-off needle valve 6 into the float chamber 1. A constant fuel level is maintained float 2 with a shut-off needle valve 6 with a seat 5 and a balancing channel 7. The float chamber communicates through channel 21 with the well 19 of the main jet, closed by a lid 20. Above the main jet there is a sprayer 17, the upper end of which goes into the diffuser 22. The jet 18 and the sprayer form main dosing system. Fuel from the main jet can flow through channel 16 to the idle jet 11 and then into channels 9 and 12, the first of which exits into the carburetor inlet pipe, and the second is connected through hole 13 to the mixing chamber. The flow area of the nozzle 11 can be changed by screw 10. When the engine is running, under the influence of a pressure difference between the float chamber and the diffuser, fuel flows out of the atomizer, is atomized and mixed with air. The amount of fuel supplied through the main metering system increases with increasing crankshaft speed, and when the throttle valve 15 is open, the mixture may become over-rich. Therefore, to maintain the required mixture composition at maximum power, an idle system is used. At high vacuum in the diffuser, air is sucked into channel 16 from the inlet pipe and enters the space between the main jet and the atomizer, thereby reducing the flow of fuel through the main jet and ensuring the required composition of the combustible mixture.

In idle mode, the throttle valve is closed, the main metering system does not work, and the required amount of enriched combustible mixture enters the mixing chamber through the idle system. In this case, under the influence of strong vacuum in the mixing chamber, the fuel rises through channel 16 through nozzle 11, mixing with air entering through channel 9, then the rich emulsion enters the mixing chamber. The amount of mixture can be adjusted with screw 10. When starting a cold engine, the combustible mixture is enriched by closing the air damper 8.

Another modern horizontal shaft cultivator

The specific manufacturer of the cultivator does not play any role. They will all have a copy of the Honda engine, and all such cultivators are either made in China or from Chinese components.

And since this is a standardized production, it will be easy to select an engine for such a cultivator:

  1. You need to measure the shaft diameter on the old engine . There will be either 19.05 or 20 mm, most likely 19.05 mm.
  2. Follow the link and see an engine up to 8 hp with a similar shaft diameter (19.05 or 20 mm).
  3. If you previously had an engine with a 19.05 mm shaft, but you want to buy an engine with a 20 mm shaft, then you can simply bore the old pulley to 20 mm.

Answers to common questions:

  1. Will the new engine fit on the same mounts? Yes
  2. I used to have a 3-5 hp engine, can I install the same one? Engines of 3, 4 and 5 hp exist in nature, but are non-standard. And therefore they will cost more than the widely used 6.5 horsepower engines. Better take 6.5 hp.

Carrying out running-in of MTZ

It is necessary to carry out a break-in after purchasing a new walk-behind tractor before putting it into operation. The importance of break-in is to allow the parts to break in. Since the walk-behind tractor that comes off the assembly line is not run-in in production, all parts may not fit tightly due to possible roughness on the surface. Therefore, during the running-in of the MTZ, no attachments are used, and the unit is started only at half power. You should not operate it at maximum speed.

The manufacturer recommends running-in for 10-15 hours.

The engine starts and at first it just runs, then gradually the load needs to be added. Do not use a heavy hitch. All you need to do is connect the trailer without any load and go for a ride with it.

Attachments

A wide range of attachments can be attached to walk-behind tractors, such as a cultivator, tractor adapter, harrow, etc.

Adapters

The adapter for the MTZ walk-behind tractor is installed for the convenience of the driver. Such equipment allows the user to work in a sitting position rather than standing. It helps to increase the speed of work, for example, if previously the speed was 5 km/h, then with the adapter it will increase to 10 km/h.

Trailers

This additional equipment is used for transporting small-sized cargo.

The dimensions of the trailer for the walk-behind tractor should be as follows:

Such equipment is capable of transporting loads weighing up to 350 kg.

Milling cutter

A tiller is equipment designed for the effective cultivation of dense and heavy soils and the removal of weeds by winding.

A reversible plow is necessary for plowing the soil. It is attached to the walk-behind tractor using a hitch.

Plow adjustment includes:

What you can do with your own hands

You can make the following additional equipment for the walk-behind tractor yourself:

You can also make an adapter for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands:

Setting up the MTZ walk-behind tractor

If you want to get maximum efficiency when working with the MTZ walk-behind tractor, then before starting work you need to configure it. It is most advisable to carry out adjustments after inactivity or long-term storage. Despite the fact that new walk-behind tractors are configured directly in production, after purchase it is necessary to additionally inspect and check all systems and, in particular, engine operation.

Carrying out maintenance of MTZ walk-behind tractors

Despite the fact that MTZ walk-behind tractors are reliable and have a solid design, to maintain them in good technical condition it is necessary to regularly carry out special maintenance, which consists of the following actions:

Motor oil 10W-40 Transmission oil TAP-15V

Operating rules for MTZ

Features of the lubrication system

To prevent breakdowns and premature failure of the power unit, it is necessary to pay special attention to lubrication, thanks to which the parts will work smoothly and continuously. The crankcase holds 0.6 cubic dm of lubricant, which is the 10W-30 series.

To avoid using a bad mixture, try to purchase oils from trusted brands that have been on the market for a long time and have proven themselves to be the best.

The oil is changed according to the schedule recommended in the operating instructions. As a rule, the first replacement is performed after 25 hours of operation, after the MTZ walk-behind tractor has been run-in. Stick to your oil change plan to avoid breakdowns.

In order to extract the used oil, you need to warm up the engine for some time. Then the lubricant becomes viscous and flows out easily.

By following the following algorithm of actions, you can perform the replacement quickly:

Gearbox repair

If adjusting the clutch and replacing gears did not bring any results, then it is necessary to disassemble the gearbox and evaluate the condition of the remaining components. Let's look at the step-by-step instructions for disassembling and repairing the gearbox of the MTZ 05 walk-behind tractor:

After installing the motor, it is necessary to check the MTZ 05 walk-behind tractor; it should work perfectly without failures from the gearbox.

From all of the above, we can conclude that repairing the MTZ 05 walk-behind tractor is a rather labor-intensive process that requires certain skills and free time. However, you can do it yourself, without the help of specialists. To do this, just follow the instructions and recommendations outlined in this article.

Purpose

The Belarus MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor is the first model of such mini-agricultural equipment produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant. Its purpose is to perform arable work on relatively small plots of land with light soils, cultivating the land using a harrow or cultivator. This model can also process row spacing of potato and beet plantings, mow grass, and transport cargo when using a trailer up to 0.65 tons.

To carry out stationary work, it is necessary to connect the drive to the power take-off shaft.

Application area

MTZ-05 has a rich history. Its development began in 1978. But only in 1985 did the first production copy roll off the assembly line. A single-axle walk-behind tractor was needed to facilitate the physical labor of farmers cultivating land plots of up to 1 hectare.

The self-propelled machine belongs to the traction class 0.1, it is used for cultivating hard soils (including virgin soils), transport work, and public utilities.

In the agricultural sector, walk-behind tractors are used for plowing, cultivating, and hilling. The machine can plant and harvest vegetable crops. The expansion of possible agrotechnical measures is carried out through the use of mounted tillage implements.

To move cargo, the walk-behind tractor is aggregated with trailers. The load capacity of such a tandem is 500 kg. The machine is also used for cleaning areas. To clear snow, use a blade or a rotary snow blower, and for small debris, use rotating brushes.
