A walk-behind tractor is a device that significantly facilitates manual labor when used on the farm. The design of the walk-behind tractor is standard: engine, chassis, controls, gearbox and coupling device for attachments. This technique is considered universal and, thanks to the attachments, the walk-behind tractor can plow the soil, hill up and loosen it. The equipment is also capable of digging up root crops, mowing grass, transporting various loads using a special cart, and in winter using a snow removal attachment or a special shovel to remove snow. Therefore, walk-behind tractors are very popular in our country due to their versatility. The first OKA models began to be produced back in the 80s.
MB-1 OKA is the old man among walk-behind tractors. The roots of this walk-behind tractor go back to Soviet times; today, structurally, it is not much different from the very first versions of walk-behind tractors. In general, MB-1 walk-behind tractors were among the first to be produced in Russia: the oldest walk-behind tractors are considered to be “Luch”, “Ural” and many others, which were produced by defense factories at that time. These walk-behind tractors were distinguished by good quality components. However, like everything done in the Soviet Union. Even now you can find walk-behind tractors from those times in excellent working condition. In the 90s, many defense plants began producing MB-1 walk-behind tractors. They were all structurally the same. If we take the present time, then the MB-1 walk-behind tractors do not have any differences from their predecessors.
But, like everything that is in good demand, in our time many copies of the OKA MB-1 have appeared from Chinese factories, which very accurately copied this model and began selling it in our country under different brands. In this article we will talk specifically about the original MB-1 OKA walk-behind tractor. Since our company is the only direct importer of OKA equipment to Belarus.
Naturally, all walk-behind tractors of the MB-1 design have both advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is a simple design that almost anyone can figure out. High reliability and durability of all components and assemblies. This model also has one control feature for which the OKA walk-behind tractor is chosen. This is the ability to control forward and reverse using levers located on the steering wheel, without changing gears on the walk-behind tractor gearbox. To start moving, just press the corresponding lever (forward or reverse) on the steering wheel. This feature reduces the time spent changing gears between forward and reverse. Among the shortcomings, it can be noted that the high center of gravity makes the walk-behind tractor unstable during operation. This issue is resolved by installing axle extensions, which are included in the kit. Also, due to the simplicity of the clutch (belt), many complain about the rapid wear of belts, but this also has its own characteristics. If we take the quality of the original OKA walk-behind tractor, and not the Chinese copies, then the Russian walk-behind tractor will be an order of magnitude better. Despite the fact that the prices for walk-behind tractors will be approximately the same. Therefore, in the article we are considering the MB-1 OKA, since it is the best of the MB models that are currently sold on the market.
The OKA walk-behind tractor consists of the following elements:
- Imported engine.
- Mechanical, chain reducer.
- Clutch.
- Hitch.
- Controls.
- Wheels 4.00 x 10 and cutters.
The standard set of the OKA walk-behind tractor includes: Walk-behind tractor, 4 rototillers, 4.00x10 wheels, axle extensions, 2 additional wheel stoppers, an additional forward and reverse belt.
To avoid getting caught by a Chinese counterfeit, you should buy a walk-behind tractor from an official representative, which we are, but if you choose another seller, you can always determine by the configuration whether they are selling you a Chinese counterfeit or an original.
The gearbox on the walk-behind tractor is chain, the design of the gearbox is simple, consisting of the right and left halves of the housing, chains, sprocket blocks, an output shaft and a shift shaft with a handle. Squares are welded to each half of the gearbox, to which the engine, steering wheel, coupling device and V-belt drive elements are attached. Thereby forming a frame on the walk-behind tractor to which all structural elements are attached.
The metal in the original OKE, unlike Chinese counterfeits, is stronger, which is confirmed by observations when comparing the original and the copy. The design of the OKA walk-behind tractor is reliable and simple. In the Chinese analogues of the MB-1, the gearbox was made with great economy and negligence, the chains were stretched and the gearbox was constantly leaking oil, the output shafts on the gearbox broke in the holes over time - this shows savings on the quality of the gearbox. The situation is different with the original MB-1 OKA walk-behind tractor. The quality of the components is at a high level, high-quality (factory) parts are used, and if the equipment is handled properly, there will be no problems like with Chinese analogues. The service life of the gearbox is much longer due to the use of high quality parts.
The gearbox has 2 gears – low and high. Due to the clutch design, the walk-behind tractor moves forward and reverse in each of these gears. This results in 2 forward gears and 2 reverse gears. The gearbox is designed to change the gear ratio and transmit rotation from the gear pulley to the wheels or cultivator.
The clutch is a belt clutch. The design is simple, but with a distinctive feature. The clutch consists of 2 belts, forward and reverse. With the help of tension brackets with rollers, rotation is transmitted from the engine pulley to the walk-behind tractor gearbox when the belts are tensioned. When the belt is pulled forward, the walk-behind tractor begins to move forward. Nothing unusual - like all walk-behind tractors. But thanks to the design of the reverse belt tensioning mechanism, when the belt is tensioned on the gear pulley, reverse rotation of the engine is transmitted, thereby the walk-behind tractor begins to move in reverse. Thanks to this, you do not need to change gears on the walk-behind tractor gearbox in order to move in reverse. Reverse and forward movement occurs in the same gear, thereby simplifying the design of the gearbox and making it even easier and faster to work with the walk-behind tractor. The advantages of a belt clutch for me are its simplicity of design and does not require serious maintenance costs.
Active attachments are cheaper than power take-off shafts with disc clutches. With this clutch design, you can change the speed and traction characteristics of the walk-behind tractor. To do this, it is enough to change the pulleys of the engine or gearbox to a more suitable size, depending on the user’s preferences. Also, with such a clutch, you can start movements more smoothly by slightly pressing the clutch lever. In this case, the belt slips slightly on the pulleys. And the walk-behind tractor begins to move a little smoother.
The output shafts of the gearbox are round, with a diameter of 30 mm. Wheels are installed 4.00×10. . Comparing tires from a Chinese manufacturer that are installed on similar copies of the MB-1 walk-behind tractor. Petroshin’s tires are simply excellent. Chinese tires are made of plastic and it is difficult to talk about quality. For many, such tires simply burst after a few months of use. Weight is about 95 kg, track without wheel extensions is 310 mm. The cutters on the walk-behind tractor are made of high-quality materials with a standard working width of 722 mm and a diameter of 360 mm. Due to its design and layout of the main components, the walk-behind tractor has a high center of gravity. The situation can be corrected by using extensions for the wheels, which give the walk-behind tractor additional stability, and when working with a cultivator, it is better to purchase additional sections of cutters.
What speed does the walk-behind tractor have in different gears? The instructions state the speed in first gear is 3.6 km/h, in second – 9 km/h. The speed mode of the walk-behind tractor is quite enough to operate it both with active attachments and when working with a trolley. Despite the fact that with such a clutch you can always change the speed of the walk-behind tractor down or up by installing a pulley of a different size. Engines on MB OKA walk-behind tractors are installed by different manufacturers. The most affordable option is the OKA-1D1M10 walk-behind tractor with a 6.5 hp Lifan engine. This is the simplest and most reliable engine for year-round use. Has an increased service life and is easy to maintain. In addition to the Lifan 6.5 hp, you can choose OKA with a Briggs & Stratton engine, also 6.5 hp, but OKA with such an engine is quite expensive. Therefore, when choosing an OKA walk-behind tractor, it is better to take a closer look at Lifan, if the plot is up to 20 acres and has 6.5 hp. it will be more than enough, if there are more than 20 acres, or you have heavy soil and you constantly transport heavy loads, you need to look towards the OKA MB-1D2M16. This model comes with 19x7.00*8 wheels, and the Lifan engine has a power of 9 hp.
The hitch on the walk-behind tractor is made of thick, good metal. An adapter for active attachments is installed at the front. The OKA MB-1 walk-behind tractor has remained one of the popular walk-behind tractors in Russia and Belarus for many years. This walk-behind tractor has its pros and cons, and distinctive features that make the walk-behind tractor interesting and unlike other modern models.
Attachments for OKA walk-behind tractor
Separately, I would like to talk about attachments. Since the functionality of the OKA MB-1 walk-behind tractor allows you to mount any passive as well as active attachments, the list of works that can be performed on it is almost limitless. As for passive attachments: plow, hillers, rippers, weeders, weeders, potato digger, you can aggregate a passive potato digger and potato planter, although it is better to use the latter through an active connection, the efficiency is better, all this attachment is connected through the original hitch to the walk-behind tractor. Since OKA uses only high-quality metal, heavy attachments can be connected to it. The active hitch is mounted on a special drawbar in the front part of the walk-behind tractor and connected via a belt drive. The list of such attachments is also unlimited. The ZARYA rotary mower has proven itself to be the best. Almost all companies selling walk-behind tractors offer the consumer, when buying a mower, to choose the Zarya model for MB walk-behind tractors. The mower can handle both overgrown areas where grass and shrubs are taller than one meter, and for mowing the lawn. You can connect an active, screening-type potato digger from any manufacturer to the OKA walk-behind tractor. Snow blower. Snow shovel, utility brush, circular saw and more. The delivery set includes 4 rototillers, the processing width is about 70 cm. The cutters are made of high-quality steel. Additionally, you can purchase one more section for each side. The OKA walk-behind tractor, even with a 6.5 hp Lifan engine, can easily work with 6 cutters, the processing width will be about 110 cm.

Which walk-behind tractor is better? OKA or NEVA?
13.03.2021
Several factors prompted me to completely disassemble these two walk-behind tractors. 1. Very often buyers ask me questions: which is better OKA or NEVA? 2. What walk-behind tractor do you recommend for a plot of 20+ acres of land? Therefore, I decided to describe the differences between this technique and draw conclusions at the end.
And so, you have a plot of 10/20/30/40 acres of land, work in 90% of cases comes down to cultivation, plowing, cutting grass, planting and digging potatoes, and transporting goods. Snow removal, such as this winter 2022. Other works, as a rule, have a more individual character. Therefore, we will take as a basis the list described above.
Since the plot is not as small as, for example, a country house (3-6 acres), but also not so large (50+ acres) that you can buy a heavy-duty walk-behind tractor like MTZ. Middle-class belt equipment weighing 90-100 kg comes to the rescue. If you have very heavy soil, you should immediately pay attention to beltless walk-behind tractors with a rigid gear-type reducer (UGRA). If you have a plot of medium-heavy cultivated land, either OKA or NEVA walk-behind tractors will be the ideal solution for you. It so happened that both walk-behind tractors are usually classified as MB class (this also came to us from the USSR), so any name, OKA or NEVA, will begin with exactly this abbreviation: OKA MB- (name of product), and accordingly NEVA MB (1 , 2, 23).
In the class of MB walk-behind tractors weighing 90+ kg. There are no more competitors to these 2 giants. There are copies, analogues, Chinese fakes, but the ancestor of the class and the only originals remain to this day the Kaluga Kadvi plant and Red October. The reader may rightly ask why Mobile-K, Avangard and AGAT were not included in this article. But I first wrote that we are considering equipment for plots of 20+ acres, and I recommend Mobile K and Avangard for plots of up to 5 acres of land, Agat with its gear reducer for up to 20 acres of land. But that's a completely different story.
And so let's begin our comparison.
OKA walk-behind tractors are produced in only one version, frame, chain gearbox, engine, steering wheel, wheels 4.00 x 10 or 19x7*8, power take-off pulley. The standard kit includes: a walk-behind tractor with wheels, 4 cutters with a diameter of 36 cm and axle extensions.
This means that structurally, all OKA walk-behind tractors are no different, except for the power unit installed on them; motors are installed from Chinese, American and Japanese brands with a capacity of 6 to 9 hp.
As for NEVA walk-behind tractors, there are differences. Structurally, they differ little from the OKA brand, but the range of engines is wider, the equipment is divided into classes MB-Compact, MB-1, MB-2 and MB-23. In addition to all this, NEVA walk-behind tractors have 2 types of gearboxes, classic and MultiAgro’s own design. In addition, the range of engines is wider, from 6 to 12 hp. The brands are the same: Chinese, American and Japanese.
To begin with, it’s worth understanding the classes, since at first glance it may seem that these are different walk-behind tractors, but this is not the case. We won’t talk about the MB-compact, because this series is not in demand in Belarus, so we don’t bring it. But MB-1, MB-2 and MB-23 are completely identical walk-behind tractors; they differ only in the engines that are installed on them.
— MB-1 is produced only with a MultiAgro gearbox and only with a Chinese 7.5 hp motor. — MB-2 is available with a classic gearbox and MultiAgro with motors of Japanese, Chinese and American brands from 6 to 6.5 hp. — MB-23 is available with a classic gearbox and MultiAgro with motors of Japanese, Chinese and American brands from 9 to 12 hp.
All NEVA walk-behind tractors do not differ in any way from each other, either visually or when working with different implements. And the mass of equipment in the series varies solely due to the weight of the power unit.
OKA and NEVA, on which the MultiAgro gearbox is installed, cannot compete with each other at all. Neither in price, nor in manufacturability, nor in the number of gears and all the benefits that NEVA is equipped with a technological MultiAgro gearbox. In my opinion, buying a NEVA with a classic gearbox doesn’t make any sense, but more on that later.
So what are we going to compare today? And we will compare OKA and NEVA with a classic gearbox. Let's take the most inexpensive models as a basis for comparison:
NEVA MB2-B&S (CR950) and OKA MB-1D2M10
All comparative information will be relevant for models with engines up to 9 hp.
Both walk-behind tractors are similar like 2 twin brothers, in weight, in engines, in functionality, but each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, we must understand. That when working on your own site, on both walk-behind tractors, you will never feel the difference. They are so identical that the differences lie only in certain nuances of operation, now we will understand.
Engine. Both walk-behind tractors are equipped with motors that are manufactured in China, although they have different origins. Lifan 168-2 6.5 hp a purebred factory Chinese (at one time gained access to Honda technologies and is installed on half of the agricultural machinery in the world), the NEVA walk-behind tractor is equipped with a motor from the American brand Briggs&Stratton (CR950), which is also produced in China and has a power of 6.5 hp. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this motor does not belong to the professional line, so the declared resource is 1100 motor hours, exactly the same parameters are declared in the power plant of the Lifan 168-2 brand, which is mounted on the OKA walk-behind tractor.
Conclusion: Buying a walk-behind tractor with an American engine (CR950) has no logic and no sense at all. Firstly, this engine costs more due to its name. Secondly, it has absolutely no advantages over Lifan in terms of quality, maintainability, availability of spare parts, and especially service. A classic set of parts: carburetor, starter, filters and consumables on Lifan will cost 3-4 times less than on Briggs&Stratton.
Gearbox. NEVA walk-behind tractors with a classic gearbox have a gear-chain gearbox, while OKA walk-behind tractors have a chain (mechanical) two-speed gearbox. I don’t think it’s worth talking about the reliability of both units, since the chain gearboxes of OKA walk-behind tractors can last more than 15 years and still remain in perfect condition, well, firstly, because this is a technologically simpler design, and secondly, the design has no longer been rolled back one decade. But it’s also difficult to say that the gearbox of the NEVA walk-behind tractor is bad, it’s just complicated, requires more highly qualified and expensive service, and in the case of repairs, it can result in a serious loss of finances.
Checkpoint. Both walk-behind tractors have 2 forward gears and 1 reverse gear. The speed characteristics of both walk-behind tractors at a reduced speed are about 3.5 km/h, and at an increased speed about 9 km/h. However, unlike the OKA walk-behind tractor, the Neva has the ability to throw a belt on streams of a different diameter and thereby reduce the speed characteristics of the walk-behind tractor. What cannot be done on the OKA walk-behind tractor, in order to reduce the speed characteristics, you will have to buy a separate pulley and, if necessary, replace the pulley; the procedure seems to take 5 minutes, but not as simple as in the NEVA walk-behind tractor.
Wheels. Walk-behind tractors are equipped with high-quality petroshin rubber wheels measuring 4.00 x 10 or 4.5 x 10; on OKA, in addition to standard ones, you can find Chinese tires 19x7*8. The quality of the latest wheels is so-so, but they are wider and look more powerful. The problem with Chinese-made wheels is that they freeze in the cold and become plastic, making operation in winter difficult.
Another small advantage of the NEVA walk-behind tractor is the ability to adjust the steering wheel both vertically and horizontally. Unfortunately, OKA walk-behind tractors only have the ability to adjust the steering wheel in a vertical position. This function should not be considered a significant disadvantage, since 99% of consumers never use the steering wheel to turn to the side. The option is fun, but useless.
Unlocking the wheel. Well, the most important point is why clients are attracted to NEVA equipment and they believe that this is the most significant factor when choosing equipment. This is the so-called left wheel unlocking function in NEVA walk-behind tractors. I would like to dot all the i’s in this article. Why is this function needed? It seems to everyone that it makes it easier to turn the walk-behind tractor, as intended. Both axes are locked, for example, you are plowing a garden, at the end of plowing the walk-behind tractor moves out into a free area, you press the unlocking handle of the left wheel, the left wheel stops rotating, and the right one continues, so you make an arc to the left behind the walk-behind tractor. Naturally, with this format, this turn is not carried out as you would like on the spot; you have to overcome a decent radius together with the walk-behind tractor. Once again, I want to draw your attention to the fact that to use this function, you need to have a space behind the area, at least 2 meters free, this is not unlocking the differential, this is only unlocking the wheel, so it cannot be turned on the spot. Another significant disadvantage of this option, due to the complexity of the design, is the failure of this function. The weakest point of the entire NEVA walk-behind tractor. And most importantly, the presence of a fence at the end of the site completely prevents you from using this function.
Well, what about OKA. The OKA walk-behind tractor has a simple and extremely reliable gearbox; implementing such a complex mechanism means calling the reliability of the entire system into question. Therefore, the OKA walk-behind tractor has 2 jokers in the deck of sixes for such a case. The first is the ability to engage forward and reverse without changing gear. This is a specially designed clutch system, unique, which is used exclusively in OKA walk-behind tractors. It works according to the following principle:
On OKA walk-behind tractors, you engage a lower gear, clamp the upper lever and the walk-behind tractor starts moving forward. Let's imagine that you are working with cutters. As soon as you reach the end of the site, if you have free space, you drive out of the cultivation area; if you hit a fence, you stop, and in both cases, you release the forward movement lever and the walk-behind tractor stops. Next, you have a lower lever; if you hold it, the walk-behind tractor will start moving backwards, and you can easily turn the equipment around. At the same time, on the OKA walk-behind tractor, you do not need to turn off the forward gear, engage the reverse, then the front again, as in other walk-behind tractors. Everything is done in one gear, forward and backward simply by clamping different levers located on the steering wheel of the walk-behind tractor. But if you rest your NEVA walk-behind tractor against a fence, you will have to release the clutch, engage reverse gear (which is not so easy), hold the clutch while driving back, release the clutch again, engage first, forward, then back again, and so on until until you deploy the unit. The second bonus for owners of the OKA walk-behind tractor is differential extension cords. The design is extremely simple, differential extensions are installed instead of standard ones, free movement is built into the design, and the walk-behind tractor can be deployed almost on the spot. And since this technique is not heavy, the turn occurs virtually with one finger.
Therefore, based on all of the above, the following conclusions can be drawn:
— The wheel unlocking system in the NEVA walk-behind tractor is structurally complex, not very reliable, and does not allow you to turn the walk-behind tractor on the spot; you have to draw an arc, which is quite immodest. If there is a fence or restrictions at the end of the cultivated area, it loses its meaning, and to turn the NEVA you will have to switch forward and reverse gears as many times as it takes to turn the walk-behind tractor.
— OKA responds to this technology with its unique clutch design, which allows you to move forward and backward without changing gears. Thus, the turn is completed in a matter of seconds. It also produces special differential extension cords for those who rely on turning on the spot. Such solutions allow you to work with equipment without complex technological solutions, do not require additional maintenance, and especially do not make the equipment less reliable than NEVA.
Price. Well, perhaps the climax of our article today is the price. As it turned out, from the above, the NEVA equipment does not have fundamentally any advantages over the OKA walk-behind tractors, the weight of the units is identical, the functionality is identical, the only difference is in the motors and manufacturing technology of the gearbox, while the chain gearbox is much more reliable, more durable, and does not require complex maintenance as in case with the NEVA technique. All attachments produced by the Kaluga plant are mounted on NEVA equipment, and attachments produced by the St. Petersburg plant are suitable for OKA walk-behind tractors. However, due to the simpler design of the OKA, the feel during operation does not differ one gram from the NEVA, but the price is much lower. If you look at the date of writing the article, OKA MB-1D2M10 03/12/2020 costs 1,499 rubles, and the NEVA MB2-B&S walk-behind tractor (CR950) is sold at a price of 1,920 rubles. And this, excuse me, is a 28% difference; for the difference you can buy a huge mountain of attachments.

All MB series walk-behind tractors can operate with a full cycle of attachments. There are no units that would work with NEVA walk-behind tractors, but not with OKA walk-behind tractors, and exactly the opposite. Most of the manufacturing enterprises in Russia make attachments specifically for these 2 brands of walk-behind tractors and, accordingly, for their copies and fakes. And since the equipment has been produced for more than a decade, and not even the second, attachments for the MB series are the most extensive and most widespread in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. Even the output shafts of both walk-behind tractors have a diameter of 30 mm. The largest number of lugs are produced specifically for 30 round shafts. Arable, two-pole, three-pole, different heights and widths, 390, 400, 430, 425, 500, 600, etc.
Passive attachments: plows, cutters, rippers, potato diggers, different types of hitches for attachments, weeders, hillers, potato planters from different manufacturers, single and double row hillers, blade shovels for snow removal and much more.
Active attachments: 3 types of rotary mowers, vibrating potato digger, snow blowers, adapters, trailers, sawmills, pumps, wood splitter, wood chippers, brushes, feed crushers, etc.
What conclusion can be drawn from all the material that I have written?
- If you decide to buy an MB-class walk-behind tractor with a classic gearbox, want to get all the functionality and access to the full range of attachments, it is better to take a closer look at OKA equipment, it is cheaper, more reliable, easier to maintain and operate, and is not one iota inferior to NEVA not with anything.
- If your soul is striving specifically to purchase NEVA, in my opinion it makes sense to buy only with the MultiAgro gearbox. Although the price is steep, you will get a number of significant advantages that the OKA walk-behind tractor cannot compete with:
— Extended gear range 6+2 or 8+4.
— Unlocking the left and right wheels.
— The gear shift is located on the steering column for maximum comfort.
I sincerely hope that I helped you make your choice once again.
