According to the manufacturer, the main purpose of the T-40 tractor was transport work, work in the field, and on personal plots. The device was recommended for use on light soils, for example, for work in garden areas and greenhouses.
Additionally, the T-40 was used for functions such as plowing, haymaking, collecting and storing hay, and delivering hay for storage; harvesting, clearing snow from fields and cultivating. Also, after every 960 hours, check:
1. Correct movement of the brushes; if the slightest jam is detected, it is necessary to eliminate them;
2. If the brushes are worn out and their thickness is less than 12 mm, then they need to be replaced. Using sandpaper, we grind the new brushes into the cavity, and use a dynamometer to measure the pressure of the brush springs. 3. If there is gout on the collector. Then you need to remove it with a rag. Pre-soaked in gasoline. If the gout remains, then we carefully protect it with sandpaper.
4. If a large fire occurs, remove the generator and send it in for repair;
5. Bearings must be lubricated every 240 hours.
For the first 1500 hours, the generator does not require the addition of lubricants or additional maintenance.
Model range and modifications of T-40
The predecessors of the T-40 tractor were the T-25, T-30, T-35 models, but the all-wheel drive version T-40A, released by the manufacturer in 1965, became a favorite among buyers. Its popularity reached the point that, based on the main T-40 machine, the plant’s engineers developed a special KO-705 harvesting machine. Conventionally, all of them can be divided into two groups - depending on the type of engine - D37 or D144. Externally, a model with a D37 engine can be recognized by its rounded hood, while modifications with a D144 engine have a rectangular hood.

A unique feature of the T-40, which distinguishes it from many analogues in terms of weight and technical characteristics, is its durability. Most of the models produced in the 70-80s of the 20th century are still in working order and are on the move, operated by farmers on private and state farms. Since the T-40 manufacturer continues to produce spare parts for the machine, maintaining the tractor in working condition is not difficult.
In addition to obvious advantages, the T-40 also has some disadvantages, namely: the thermal regime of the engine is unstable, which manifests itself in winter underheating and summer overheating when working in the scorching sun, for example. In winter, the engine can be difficult to start, and the cabin does not warm up enough due to the air-cooled engine.
Despite its shortcomings, parameters such as strength and speed make it possible to call the T-40 one of the most popular tractor models of the 20th century. The minimum speed of the tractor is 2 km/h, the maximum is 27 km/h. It is possible to adjust the track; the rear pair of wheels can be replaced with others, narrower than the factory ones.
Advantages and disadvantages
Relatively inexpensive, simple in design and economical in everyday use, “magpies” have earned the respect of users due to their versatility, unpretentiousness to fuel and lubricants, and long service life.
Thanks to the wide selection and affordable cost of repair, restoration and consumables, tractors produced in the 80s and 90s are still maintained in good technical condition.

The fuel consumption of the T-40 tractor is not always the same. Since the engine power of the models is different, the fuel consumption will be different accordingly. The lowest figure is 7.28 kg/h. It may increase depending on the complexity of the work performed and the quality of the soil.
The design and adjustment of the clutch of the T 40 tractor affect the smooth shifting of the gearbox. Let's consider the principle of operation of the mechanism.
The T-40 clutch disconnects the connection between the engine and transmission. Such a short-term disconnection is necessary to quickly change gears on the gearbox and start moving the machine. Disengagement of the clutch discs is achieved by the release bearing. This is an important and most vulnerable part that is part of the gearbox and ensures the movement of the car. If this part wears out or breaks, it is immediately replaced with a new one.
The mechanism consists of a clutch, which is a disk with closed control. During operation, the disc linings wear out, which leads to a decrease in the gap between the bearing and the ends of the levers. Fracture may occur as a result of friction. The clutch can be adjusted using rods or bolts. In both cases the gap should remain 4 mm.

On the back cover of the generator there are terminals “+” and “D” for connecting electrical consumers and devices, as well as a switch for seasonal voltage adjustment. The generator operates in parallel with the battery and serves to recharge it.

Exploitation
To prevent failure of the generator, equipped with a built-in integral voltage regulator, when performing welding work on the tractor, turn off the “ground” switch in advance.
To increase the service life of the generator, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:
1. It is prohibited to connect the battery terminals with reverse polarity - this will lead to failure of the voltage regulator and generator;
2. Do not under any circumstances start the engine from an external source with a voltage exceeding 13 V;
3. Do not wash the generator with gasoline, diesel fuel or solutions containing degreasers, or dry it at temperatures exceeding 85 ºC;
4. It is prohibited to check the generator for serviceability by shorting the terminals to ground and the terminals of the voltage regulator to each other;
5. It is prohibited to check the presence of electric current by shorting to ground when the battery is removed.
The serviceability of the T-40 tractor generator can be checked using the ground switch indicator lamp located on the left of the instrument panel. The warning light comes on after turning on the ground before starting the engine. If the generator is working properly, the warning light will go out after the engine starts.

Generator maintenance and repair
Generator maintenance involves infrequently checking the contact connections and the reliability of the generator mounting.
After every 120 hours of operation, check the tension of the fan belt; if necessary, tighten the belt by unscrewing the nut and moving the generator towards you. The generator belt tension is considered normal when the belt deflection between the crankshaft and the fan pulley is 15-22 mm if you press it with a force of 4 kgf.
